Black Agriches

     General

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/c4a1c2dfb90d7b1fcf041a82dea45bd1_1.jpg
Roxana's family, led her father, Lant Agriche. Infamous for their illicit activities and quite unpopular among other families, they live in a sprawling estate surrounded by swamps in the northern part of the continent. The main antagonists in the original novel.
  • Aristocrats Are Evil: Agriches are rich, well connected thanks to their seedy machinations, away from the public eye and free to engage in whatever atrocities they want.
  • Badass Normal: They have no affinity for magic, as opposed to other Great Houses. They're just really, really good at scheming and killing people in creative ways.
  • The Beautiful Elite: As abhorrent as they are, Agriches are still aristocratic, very well dressed and ridiculously attractive.
  • Big, Screwed-Up Family: They're pretty much a textbook example.
  • Blood Sport: They enjoy watching their drugged-out slaves fight each other.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: As expected in the family where one of the ways to rise in the ranks is killing or crippling your competition.
  • Hated by All: While they're universally disliked, Agriches are too powerful for any of the other families to make a move against them (and they also have their own shady dealings with them), and the full extent of their atrocities is not publicly known. For example, Cassis' musings reveal that Lant's polygyny is only speculated about among other families, and he notes that Agriche children must be sickly if they die so often, not realizing what is really going on.
  • Mad Scientist: They're very interested in research and development of poisonous plants (and poisons in general), experimenting on animals to create mutants and on people, mostly just for kicks.
  • The Mafia: They're strongly connected to the criminal underworld and the narration openly calls them "mafia-like".
  • Massive Numbered Siblings: Roxana was Lant's sixth child and more followed after her. However, many of them are already dead.
  • No Historical Figures Were Harmed: Agriches might be this to the Borgia family (or at least their popular depictions), considering comparisons to the mafia, sibling rivalry, propensity for poisons and incestuous undertones.
  • Obviously Evil: Agriches are not really subtle about being the villains of the setting.
  • Royal Harem: Not exactly royal, but Lant rules over a certain domain on the continent and has about ten wives, each having her own suite in his manor. Cassis' thoughts on the matter suggest this isn't considered legal or even normal in the setting.
  • Sibling Murder: A fairly casual occurence among them.
  • Sibling Rivalry: All Agriche children are supposed to compete for the top three spots in the pecking order.
  • Villainous Incest: Agriches used to practice inbreeding to some degree a few generations back.

The main heroine, hellbent on surviving the story.
  • The Ace: She's beautiful, industrious, well educated, charming, talented in many fields and admired even by some members of her family.
  • Animal Eye Spy: Roxana can see through the eyes of her butterflies, allowing her to use them as scouts
  • Ascended Extra: Current version of Roxana is this to the original one.
  • Bastard Understudy: Towards her father.
  • Broken Bird: Original Roxana, particularly after Cassis' death.
  • Brother–Sister Team: With Jeremy, post-timeskip, although it's clear she doesn't tell him everything. The exact nature of her deal with Dion, on the other hand, remains ambiguous.
  • Butterfly of Death and Rebirth: The manhwa has major themes of death and rebirth and remaking yourself so it's fitting that Roxana is heavily associated with butterflies. Not only is Roxana a reincarnator but it also ties to Roxana destroying and rebuilding the Agriches and Roxana herself leaving and being "reborn" in the Pedelian family
  • The Chessmaster: She started moving her pieces against Lant when she was at least twelve.
  • Collector of the Strange: While being reportedly one of the more benign characters in "Hell's Flower", original Roxana liked to collect human eyeballs. Jeremy even claims he saw Cassis' eyes in her collection, but he's not exactly a reliable source.
  • Cool Big Sis: Towards Jeremy.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: It's shown that Roxana used to be much more kind and carefree as a child until Ashil's death.
  • Dark Action Girl: Downplayed. As all Agriches, Roxana was taught some hand to hand combat, but she uses mostly her brains to get what she wants.
  • Death Seeker: Ultimately, Roxana was prepared to just go ahead and be devoured by her butterflies after she obtained her revenge on Lant Agriche, as she has long believed that it's a fitting end for her for being born an Agriche and she has nothing else to live for. However, Cassis refused to let her die and brought her to the Pedelian estate to heal her in the aftermath of the coup against Lant Agriche.
  • Debt Detester: The reason why Roxana is so annoyed at her mother being saved by Cassis, as he's now owed her gratitude, while she's working to pull You Owe Me on him.
  • Declaration of Protection: To Cassis, even though she does it for less altruistic reasons.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: To Cassis, although it is at least partially deliberate.
  • Determinator: She's willing to do anything to survive, even at the cost of her own health.
  • Ethereal White Dress: In the "bad ending" side story, where she's dying.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: She no longer has bangs post-timeskip, instead letting her hair frame her face.
  • Graceful Ladies Like Purple: Especially post-timeskip, where almost all her dresses (save for her black traveling gown on the way to Wigdrasil and green dresses seen in two separate flashbacks) are in many shades of purple. Roxana wearing mostly red or purple through the story indicates her growing bond with her butterflies.
  • Head-Turning Beauty: Upon her arrival to Wigdrasil she draws everyone's attention just with her looks alone. Lant capitalizes on this by ordering her to remain in her rooms until the last day of the meeting to make her seem even more tantalizing and memorable. Thanks to this she successfully manages to outshine even Sylvia, who was, in the original novel, supposed to be the belle of the ball.
  • Her Boyfriend's Jacket: She wears Cassis' coat he gave her at Wigdrasil, something she uses to taunt Dion with after they come back to Agriche estate.
  • Heroic Seductress: Original Roxana actually excelled at seduction lessons and used her skills as her only means of being useful to her father and remaining alive. Current version of Roxana is less eager to use those skills beyond just charming men for her own ends, and it's not like she can use them non-lethally anyway.
  • High-Class Gloves: She wears them often, particularly post-timeskip, probably due to her skin being poisonous to touch.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: She claims to Jeremy and Lant she managed to hatch only one butterfly egg out of three. As it turns out later, she managed to hatch another one earlier, but she keeps the other swarm and its properties secret.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While quite unpleasant towards Sierra about her being The Load, she isn't exactly wrong about that, particularly since Dion made it clear he's willing to go to extreme lenghts to see Roxana cry.
  • Kick the Dog: Even though she does so in order to protect her mother somewhat, Roxana telling Sierra she's a hindrance to her and later constantly refusing to give her mother any time of her day is basically this.
  • Lady in Red: Played With in the webtoon. Roxana has been shown wearing dresses in almost every colour of the spectrum, but she seems fond of red jewels, probably to accentuate her eyes. Her most iconic dress (judging by the amount of fanart) is also the red one pictured above.
  • Light Feminine and Dark Feminine: Dark to Sylvia's light.
  • Love at First Sight: Original Roxana towards Cassis. Too bad she saw him first 3 months after his imprisonment, at which point he was already an Empty Shell.
  • Manipulative Bitch: She manipulates absolutely everyone, from her father to Cassis, and has an impressive success rate when it comes to her schemes.
  • Master of Illusion: One set of Roxana's butterflies give her this ability via poison induced hallucinations. She primarily uses this power to manipulate and plot against her family.
  • Next Life as a Fictional Character: A usual fare for "Reborn as Villainess" Story, she was a college student before reincarnating as Roxana. Aside from her knowledge of the novels' plot her past life doesn't have much bearing on her character overall.
  • Nice to the Waiter: Subverted. She's notably nicer and more polite to the guards and servants than most of her family members, but she still has no problems maiming or using them as scapegoats as long as it serves her goals.
  • No Historical Figures Were Harmed: Possibly, to Lucrezia Borgia, being a beautiful poisonous blonde with an ambiguous relationship with her brothers.
  • Parental Favoritism: She seems to be Lant's favourite child, although it's obvious she worked for that position very hard.
  • Parental Issues: Despite claiming otherwise, Roxana clearly resents Sierra for her weakness and inability to protect her children from the horrors of being born into Agriche family.
  • Pet the Dog: Roxana cares about Jeremy as family and was willing to return to the Agriche family to help Jeremy lead the remnants of the Agriche family near the end of the story.
  • Poisonous Person: Her poison intake has rendered her bodily fluids and organs toxic. During the coup, she incapacitates one of her father's loyal servants by merely touching him. Only Cassis is able to safely touch her as his abilities can counter the poison in Roxana's body.
  • Power at a Price: Because she isn't using magic to control her butterflies and is essentially turning herself into their food source, Roxana's powers come at a horrific price. The poison she consumes is slowly killing her and her butterflies will once day turn on and kill her once they grow too numerous and her blood isn't enough.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Beautiful!: Roxana is gorgeous and she knows this very well, using her looks to manipulate people around her.
    • Original Roxana failed her evaluation and was only spared from death due to Lant deciding her looks might prove useful at some point (and Sierra begging for her life). However, she later deliberately failed her mission to seduce Sylvia's love interests.
  • Self-Harm: In addition to consuming poison in amounts considered excessive even by her relatives, she regularly cuts open her arms. All of that to keep her butterflies addicted to her blood. She also puts out candles with her bare hands.
  • The Shut-In: Original Roxana was a depressed mess hiding in her rooms with her creepy collection.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Roxana is perfectly content to stay in her father's shadow and basically act as just an eye candy, but she's in fact a cold-blooded schemer with a terrifing weapon at her disposal, and her high position among the Agriche children reflects that.
  • The Stoic: To a lesser extent than Dion, but she rarely shows emotions, hiding her feelings behind a fake smile.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: In the novels Roxana mentions she inherited Lant's red eyes and Villainous Cheekbones, but otherwise it seems she takes mostly after her mother in terms of looks. As for personality, Lant claims she's the most like himself among his children and he might have a point.
  • Symbol Motif Clothing: She wears a butterfly motif on many of her clothes and accessories.
  • Tsurime Eyes: Fitting for a villainess and setting her apart from her mother.
  • Unlimited Wardrobe: She wears at least one ridiculously elaborate dress per each chapter.
  • Villain Protagonist: She's only interested in getting out alive from her situation and will stop at nothing to achieve it. Her only saving grace is not being as depraved as the rest of her murderous family.
  • Wingding Eyes: You can sometimes see butterflies in them, mostly whenever she's using her swarm.
  • Winter Royal Lady: Post-timeskip the story starts in winter, and Roxana is reintroduced wearing a massive white fur cape and fur-trimmed lilac dress. She's also wearing furs at Wigdrasil.
  • Would Hurt a Child: She has absolutely no problem slashing Charlotte's face with her hairpins and then leaving her alone with Jeremy while knowing full well that he's going to abuse their younger sister further.

Roxana's younger half-brother, the one who's closest to her. He was a secondary villain in "Hell's Flower".
  • Abduction Is Love: To Sylvia, who he kidnapped in the original novel. Subverted by him ending up killed by her for it.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Downplayed. Roxana is more amused than exasperated by his clinginess and impulsive behaviour, and he's still her favourite sibling. Dion only snidely comments on his failures during Cassis' first escape attempt and later pointedly ignores him.
  • Big Brother Bully: He beats up Charlotte to the point of dislocating her shoulder.
  • Blood Knight: Jeremy really enjoys fighting, be it other people or beasts. At fifteen he kills giant spiders and manticores for fun and constantly seeks opportunities to spill some blood.
  • Brother–Sister Team: Post-timeskip it seems like Roxana has taken Jeremy as her accomplice.
  • The Brute: Violence is his usual solution to every problem.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Some of the things he says and does are completely off the wall. When introducing him Roxana comments that he's "touched in the head" even more than other Agriches.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: To Sylvia in the original novel and towards Roxana in the current timeline.
  • Femme Fatalons: Pre-timeskip he files his nails into claws. They come back post-timeskip as well, when he starts slaughtering his tutors at Agriche estate.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Since Cassis was alive thanks to Roxana helping him escape, Jeremy never fell in love with Sylvia in first sight and instead had a poor first impression of her due to looking so similar to Cassis.
  • Hellish Pupils: While he didn't inherit Lant's red eyes, he still has vertical pupils in the webtoon.
  • Incest Subtext: Jeremy is insanely covetous of Roxana's affection and attention, to the point of trying to get Cassis killed more than once and attacking people over even looking at her or mentioning her name.
  • Insane Troll Logic: In the original novel he was annoyed by Sylvia talking to other men asking for help in search of her missing brother, so, to make her stop, he told her Cassis was already killed by Agriches. He's then genuinely surprised by Sylvia's Freak Out and subsequent vow to destroy his family.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: He tends to go headfirst into action without thinking or assume things righ off the bat. After seeing Cassis outside of his cell, he raises alarm about him trying to escape and attacks him despite the fact Cassis was shackled and accompanied by Agriche guards at the time, then he goes and lets karantuls out of their cages, causing chaos at Maria's tea party.
  • Loose Lips: He reveals to both Charlotte and Maria that the new prisoner in the dungeons is Cassis Pedelian.
  • Love Makes You Dumb: While Jeremy is not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed in general, in "Hell's Flower" he revealed to Sylvia not only her brother's fate, but apparently also other secrets of his family.
  • Maniac Tongue: Every time he's irked, disgusted or just smug.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Jeremy goes through a mental breakdown after he's forced to kill Roxana's illusion during his evaluation. Real Roxana comforting and reassuring him after this incident is what brings them even closer than before.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: To a pathological degree. He basically attacks anyone who shows Roxana any interest or is at the receiving end of her attention. After arriving to Wigdrasil he instantly goes out to beat up a bunch of people gathered outside her suite in hopes to see her.
  • Number Two: To Lant in the original novels.
  • Parental Issues: Jeremy's mother was terrified of him and refused to interact with him at all, eventually jumping to her death from a balcony when he tried to talk to her. Due to this Jeremy has an extremely negative opinion on mothers overall.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: At both fifteen and eighteen he acts like he's twelve at best, and due to being raised in a house such as Agriche, it's not a good thing.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: Jeremy isn't exactly known for his restrained language.
  • Spanner in the Works: To a degree. He puts a wrench in Roxana's plan of staging Cassis' first escape attempt (that was supposed to fail) by raising alarm too early and releasing acromantulas, but in the end Cassis is still caught, albeit Roxana is now indebted to him for saving her mother.
  • Unwitting Pawn: To Roxana, who easily manipulates him whichever way she wants.
    • He was also skillfully manipulated by original Roxana, even though their relationship was belligerent.
  • Villainous Crush: Towards Sylvia in "Hell's Flower". He seems downright disdainful of her in the current story, however.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: He goes through a growth spurt in the webtoon during the timeskip.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Charlotte, and, implied, Sylvia in "Hell's Flower".
  • Zettai Ryouiki: A rare male example, pre-timeskip.

     Dion Agriche

Dion Agriche

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/9350862a0ce43aa0b5eec45f367034dc_2.jpg
Click here to see his Post-Time Skip appearance
Roxana's older half-brother, currently the favourite son of their father. Roxana absolutely despises him.
  • Aloof Big Brother: Dion doesn't seem to be close with any of his family members and doesn't appear often in the family estate, apparently always on some errands from Lant.
  • Blood Knight: He seems to genuinely enjoy fighting with Cassis and gloats at him about killing the Pedelian search party. When later Lant punishes Dion for the above incident by sending him out to hunt for escaped beasts, Roxana complains this is hardly a punishment for Dion.
  • Brother–Sister Team: It seems he has formed some sort of alliance with Roxana after Cassis' escape from Agriches, but what exactly that entails is not revealed yet.
  • Cain and Abel: Cain to Ashil's Abel. He openly tells Roxana he would kill him again if he could.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Dion doesn't bother with fighting honourably and has absolutely no problem putting bystanders' lives on the line if it fits him at the moment.
  • The Dreaded: He's basically a killing machine. Even usually apathetic Roxana get an Oh, Crap! reaction when she realizes he's coming back home.
  • Evil Wears Black: So far he's been shown wearing only black, with an Ominous Opera Cape included.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: He grows out his hair during timeskip.
  • Foil: To Cassis. They're both their fathers' favourites and designated heirs, both take after their fathers, are fairly renowned and admired by their peers, evenly matched in a fight and share special bonds with their younger sisters. Except Dion had to achieve his position by cutting his way through his other siblings, sees no use for friendships and companions and his relationship with Roxana can be only described as massively messed up, while Cassis comes from a well-adjusted family, cares for his people and is a loving, protective brother towards Sylvia.
  • Genre Savvy: Dion is the only member of the family smart enough to figure out Roxana managed to hatch two butterfly eggs out of three and she used the second swarm to fake Cassis' death, while allowing him to escape.
  • Hemo Erotic: Almost all his onscreen encounters with Roxana feature him attempting to make her bleed. In the "bad ending" side story he outright licks her blood off her body while she's dying. He also opens his own veins to feed her butterflies in order to stave off her death and mingles her blood with his.
  • Incest Subtext: His relationship with Roxana is complicated, to put it mildly.
  • I Will Find You: In the "bad ending" side story he says it word for word to dying Roxana after she tells him about reincarnation.
  • Kick the Dog: He tries to get Sierra killed just to see Roxana's tears.
  • No Historical Figures Were Harmed: To Cesare Borgia, probably, with them both being their fathers' favourite sons and top enforcers, their rivalry with their brothers and questionable relationships with their sisters.
  • Number Two: To his father in the ongoing story. He betrays Lant for Roxana later.
  • The Scapegoat: Roxana uses his name to get Cassis out of his cell when staging Cassis' first escape attempt. The fact that later Dion doesn't even bother protesting his case suggests he might've as well done it, as well as his confidence in Lant's lenience in punishing him.
  • Sibling Murder: Dion is the one who killed Ashil.
  • Skeleton Motif: His uniform has skulls on epaulets and Agriche coat of arms on the back.
  • The Sociopath: He's basically the perfect end result of Agriche upbringing.
  • The Stoic: Dion barely shows any emotions and Roxana's taunts and insults don't seem to get any rise out of him.
    • Not So Stoic: He starts losing his composure when Roxana mocks him in light of Cassis' reappearance at Wigdrasil.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Both Roxana and Cassis comment on his similarity to Lant, with Cassis at one point almost mistaking Dion for his father.
    • Averted with his mother, as he seems to have nothing in common with Maria, aside from general bloodthirstiness and killing skill.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Comes with being an Agriche.
  • Unable to Cry: His upbringing left him emotionally stunted and unable to emote, hence why he's so fascinated with Roxana's ability to cry.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: He's curiously missing from Roxana's memories about the original novel, albeit he clearly existed there. It's (very vaguely) implied he was killed off by Jeremy.
  • Would Hit a Girl: He shows no hesitation attacking Sierra during his fight with Cassis. When Roxana calls him out on that, Dion cuts her cheek with his fingernail, commenting how much he wants to see her cry. Later, when she taunts him about Cassis' return at Wigdrasil, he almost breaks her wrist whilst shoving her onto a pillar.

     Lant Agriche

Lant Agriche

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1c0f20d0dce9310f39c4dbcc863b4114_2.jpg
Current patriarch of the Agriche family, the father of Roxana and her siblings. The main villain of both "Hell's Flower" and the ongoing story.
  • 0% Approval Rating: No one seems to like Lant Agriche, not even his own family. The Agriches have a nasty reputation and are only left alone through fear. Within the family, Lant's truly terrible parenting means that most of the family also only follow him through fear and a good chunk of the family end up joining Roxana's coup.
  • Abusive Parents: Lant puts his children through hell in order to get his mildest approval and it's implied he went through similar treatment as a child.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: He makes no effort to try hiding what kind of person he is.
  • Cigar Chomper: He smokes most of the time, completing his image of a mafia don.
  • Equal-Opportunity Evil: As noted by Roxana, he's surprisingly democratic about his choice of wives: their race, wealth or social status doesn't matter to him as long as they have traits or abilities that might be passed onto their prospective children.
  • Evil Gloating: Apparently Lant mocks Lissel Pedelian about his "mysteriously disappeared heir" every time they meet.
  • Evil Is Petty: He kidnaps and, in the original novel, murders Cassis only to spite his father. Cassis just looking at him is enough to provoke Lant into almost beating him to death.
  • Evil Laugh: He bursts into maniacal laughter after Roxana lets Cassis' illusion be devoured by her butterflies before his eyes.
  • Evilutionary Biologist: While he isn't a scientist, Roxana comments that the way he chooses his wives is reminiscent of conducting a genetic experiment.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: He almost kicks Bound and Gagged Cassis Pedelian to death just for staring at him defiantly.
    • Later he beats Fontaine with a cane.
  • Offing the Offspring: Lant has absolutely no compunctions about killing off his children if he deems them unworthy.
  • Ominous Opera Cape: He wears them even at home.
  • Parental Favoritism: Lant shows special appreciation towards Dion and Roxana, two of his most accomplished children.
  • Self-Made Orphan: He took over the Agriche after killing his own father.
  • The Social Darwinist: He's openly called that in the narration. Lant decides whether his children get to live or die based on their abilities to rise in the ranks of the family.
  • Slasher Smile: Lant shows it often, especially every time Roxana demonstrates her abilites.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Roxana even comments he might in a way be more beautiful than Sierra.
  • Villainous Cheekbones: A noted feature of his, particularly in the novel, alongside his eyes.

     Sierra Agriche

Sierra Agriche

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chap_4_9.jpg
Roxana and Ashil's mother, Lant Agriche's fourth wife.
  • Damsel in Distress: Sierra has to be saved by Cassis after Dion throws a monster her way when she interferes their fight.
  • Gilded Cage: She lives a deeply unhappy life of luxury in the snakes' den that is Agriche manor.
  • Light Is Good: She's blonde-haired and blue-eyed, consistently shown wearing white or pastel dresses and is the only genuinely good member of the Agriche family.
  • The Load: Sierra isn't strong or smart, and, while having good intentions, she has an unfortunate tendency to put herself In Harm's Way. Roxana tells her point-blank she's this while asking her to step away from trying to protect her daughter.
  • Morality Pet: She's one to Roxana, Maria and maybe even Lant. Even Jeremy, while standoffish, is notably more respectful towards her than to his father's other wives.
  • Nice to the Waiter: A genuine example. Sierra seems to be the only member of the family who shows servants kindness, at one point even saving the life of one of Maria's maids.
  • Odd Friendship: With Maria, if you can call it that. Roxana compares them to a snake and a rat.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Her firstborn son was killed by his own relatives. She hasn't been the same since.
  • Parents as People: Sierra dearly loves her daughter and is terrified by the prospect of Roxana putting her life on the line or becoming evil, but she's too weak and out of her depth to help in any significant way.
  • Sanity Slippage: Downplayed, but it's clear she's mentally fragile and Ashil's death, as well as general environment of Agriche family put her psyche through a wringer. She's a Nervous Wreck every time she interacts with Maria and suffers from a mental breakdown when watching Cassis being attacked by Dion.
  • Socialite: Prior to marrying Lant, Sierra was already well known among high society for her beauty.
  • Tareme Eyes: She looks like a wounded puppy whenever something bad happens, which is often.
  • Trophy Wife: Lant married her for her looks, hoping their children would take after them both. He keeps using her as his arm candy at official outings.
  • White Sheep: She's one among Lant Agriche's wives.

     Maria Agriche

Maria Agriche

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/d60d15b8eb06fcff2de9bdefd574aa11.jpg
Dion's mother, Lant Agriche's third wife.
  • Ax-Crazy: She kills her servants at the drop of a hat and makes puppets out of their corpses.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: After killing the maid Maria's main concern is whether she accidentally stained Roxana's dress or not by doing so. She also seems to genuinely not understand Sierra's distress when faced with one of her People Puppets. Later she reprimands Dion for killing Ashil, not because it was wrong, but because it upset Sierra (also note that at this point Ashil had been dead for five years already and Dion did it at Lant's orders, otherwise he would be killed himself).
  • Dissonant Serenity: Maria is a cute, polite and cheerful woman who, as Roxana puts it, "looks and dresses like an overgrown doll". She's perfectly nice to her maid, even thanking her for providing information about Dion's whereabouts before she decapitates her for speaking unprompted, then continues her walk drenched in blood.
    • She's also completely unbothered by Roxana's constant refusal of her invitations or Jeremy insulting her to her face, and seems unable to hold a grudge.
  • The Dreaded: Even by other Agriches. Jeremy personally is unnerved at her level of craziness.
  • I Am a Humanitarian: Right off the bat Roxana introduces her in the novel as "the cannibal", mentioning she witnessed Maria partaking in raw human meat, and she's apparently not the only Agriche wife to do so.
  • Nothing Nice About Sugar and Spice: She wears ridiculously frilly dresses and hats in light, cheery colours, organizes tea parties where she plays the role of a perfect hostess, likes taking long walks in the garden, is always incredibly upbeat and nice, and collects dolls. Made from people she killed and dismembered. She also casually kills her maids and every once in a while serves human meat at her parties. When Maria learns Roxana got her own sex slave, and Cassis Pedelian at that, she's downright ecstatic and later sends her a basket of (toxic) flowers with a bottle of an aphrodisiac as a present.
  • Parasol of Pain: She uses the sharp tip of her parasol to decapitate her maid.
  • Parental Neglect: Maria is completely apathetic about Dion, apparently only caring about the clout his high position gives her.
  • Pet the Dog: She seems to genuinely like and care about Sierra, and enjoy her presence to the point where Roxana keeps her mother out of her hair by arranging her meetings with Maria. She also willingly leaves the Agriche household to keep Sierra company in a neutral territory after the fall of the Agriche family.
  • Professional Killer: Possibly. Her past is not revealed, but Roxana comments on Maria's skillfulness when she decapitates the maid at the perfect angle to avoid spraying blood onto Roxana.
  • The Scapegoat: Played With. Due to Dion being blamed for taking Cassis out of his cell, a lot of people (including Dion himself) assume it was Maria who used his name to bring Roxana's toy to her tea party. Interestingly, Maria doesn't contest that, but she's not punished for her potential involvement anyway.

     Ashil Agriche

Ashil Agriche

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/d02e1b713f5c0a803c09849b7404cbb1.jpg
Roxana's older brother, killed five years prior to the start of the novel.
  • Accidental Misnaming: Lant doesn't even bother to remember his name properly.
  • Cain and Abel: Ashil was killed by Dion after he refused to kill the illusion of either his mother or sister.
  • Came Back Wrong: Ashil's corpse was given to the Veritium family, where they technically revive him and make him one of the family's puppets. However, he was revived with a completely opposite personality to the original Ashil and the nature of his revival means he wouldn't last long without the Veritium family's magic.
  • Death of a Child: His murder took a toll on Sierra's mental health.
  • Declaration of Protection: Towards Roxana when they were children. It obviously failed.
  • Eye Scream: In the webtoon his corpse is portrayed with one eye gouged out.
  • Go Out with a Smile: Ashil is described as smiling in death.
  • The Lost Lenore: To Roxana who never recovered from his death and is still traumatized and affected even years later.
  • Posthumous Character: He died when Roxana was eleven.
  • Meaningful Name: His name can be also transcribed as "Achille". Due to Sierra mistaking Cassis for Ashil many other people assume Roxana took interest in Cassis because he also reminded her of her brother. This is not exactly the case, but Roxana doesn't bother correcting the record, instead letting others think this is her weak point.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Ashil basically looked like a male version of his mother.
  • Too Good for This Sinful Earth: Roxana's memories of him clearly indicate that.
  • White Sheep: To other Agriche children.

     Charlotte Agriche

Charlotte Agriche

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chap_19_7.jpg
Roxana's younger half-sister.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: She's a bratty thirteen year-old and her elder siblings (or her father for that matter) show her absolutely no mercy every time she incurs their wrath.
  • Butt-Monkey: So far her every appearance has ended with her getting her ass handed to her.
  • Enfante Terrible: Even by the Agriche standards. Charlotte apparently tortured at least several prisoners to death.
  • Fiery Redhead: She has a very short fuse.
  • Girl with Psycho Weapon: In fact, she carries around a veritable arsenal of nasty appliances.
  • I Call It "Vera": Charlotte calls all her weapons girly names.
  • Slasher Smile: She displays a truly impressive one when Jeremy tells her she should kill Cassis Pedelian if she can't have him.
  • Spoiled Brat: She's used to getting whatever she wants, which is why she's so furious over Roxana getting her "toy" this time.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She looks a lot like her mother, only with Tsurime Eyes and her hair being slightly different shade of red.
    • Averted with Lant. Charlotte looks nothing like her father and is reportedly sensitive about it.

     Fontaine Agriche

Fontaine Agriche

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chap_26_17.jpg
Roxana's oldest half-brother.
  • Always Someone Better: Dion shows him up at every opportunity.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Lant cuts off his hand after accusing him of attempting a coup.
  • BFS: He doesn't get to use it, however.
  • Blood Knight: Just like his other half-brothers. Fontaine is introduced while trudging through a snowy forest looking for some beasts to slaughter and unwind his anger at being overshadowed by Dion again.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: He's not even bothering to hide his designs towards Roxana.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Fontaine is briefly shown among top five Agriche siblings in chapter two of the webtoon, but he's only fully introduced post-timeskip in chapter 27.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Courtesy of Cassis, who first mistakes him for Lant and later realizes Fontaine was not worth sparing anyway.
  • Incest-ant Admirer: He lusts after his younger half-sister. Roxana is fully aware of that and while she finds it disgusting, she has no problem manipulating him with her looks.
  • No Historical Figures Were Harmed: He might be one to Juan Borgia, being the oldest brother overshadowed by his younger, more accomplished siblings, who might have had an incestuous relationship with his sister.
  • The Scapegoat: In order to distract Lant from investigating Cassis' sudden reappearance at Wigdrasil Roxana claims Fontaine is trying to take over the family back in Agriche estate. Fontaine genuinely wanted to rebel, just not at that moment.
  • Sibling Rivalry: With Dion, albeit Dion doesn't bother to even acknowledge him.
  • Smug Snake: He suffers from Suicidal Overconfidence when presented with the possibility of overthrowing his father and Dion. It turns out his intentions were quite transparent to both his father and siblings.
  • Too Dumb to Live: He's easily manipulated by Roxana, his schemes are transparent to virtually everyone in the family and even after realizing he was used by his sister, getting curb-stomped by Lant and seeing he never had chances of beating Dion, he still believes he can escape and defeat his siblings. Then he stumbles upon Cassis and assumes he will be spared, only to learn he was severely mistaken.
  • The Unfavorite: It's implied Fontaine is this to Lant, even though he's allowed to live. Lant's willingness to believe Roxana when she claims Fontaine staged an uprising speaks both of his low opinion of Fontaine and the level of his trust in Roxana.
    • Confirmed by Lant who claims he gave Fontaine multiple chances despite him being a disappointment.
  • Unwitting Pawn: To Roxana, who flatters his ego by promising Fontaine her support and maybe more if he chooses to rebel.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: He sees himself as a Worthy Opponent to Dion, assumes Roxana is willing to form an Unholy Matrimony with him to pull The Coup against both Lant and Dion and thinks he's The Chessmaster. Then Roxana pulls the rug out from under Fontaine by accusing him of treason to distract Lant from investigating Cassis' reappearance, Lant tells him he was well aware of his schemes for a while, and Dion informs him he never even considered him a rival. Finally, when escaping from his cell, Fontaine runs into Cassis and mistakenly assumes Cassis will let him go (after running his mouth about his plans to kill Roxana), only to discover that Good Is Not Soft.

     Griselda Agriche

Roxana's older half-sister.
  • Brainy Brunette: Griselda is both a skilled mage and possesses extensive medical knowledge.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: It's implied her sister's death was this for her.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Like Fontaine, she has a brief cameo in chapter 2 and you can see her among the background characters at Maria's tea party in chapter 14 if you squint. She's fully introduced in chapter 17, but gets a more prominent role only since chapter 36.
  • Geometric Magic: Judging by what she says about magic circles, it seems to be her specialty.
  • Hime Cut: She has the classic version with parted bangs and sidelocks.
  • It Amused Me: Griselda helps Roxana in some of her ventures but it's mainly because Griselda is interested in what Roxana has in mind and wishes to see the outcome of them than out of familial love for her.
  • Mad Doctor: According to Roxana in the novels, she's well versed in human anatomy and how to apply that knowledge when it comes to torture. We have yet to see her doing anything with it.
  • Mage Born of Muggles: Griselda is apparently the only member of Agriches who can use magic. She's the one who created the magical circle used to trap Lant inside.
  • Magic Knight: She has no problem knocking down a Giant Spider using just a metal staff.

Blue Pedelians

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/c4a1c2dfb90d7b1fcf041a82dea45bd1_15.jpg
Cassis and Sylvia's family, led by their father, Lissel Pedelian. They're strongly associated with justice and basically serve as an antithesis to Agriches, which is a source of Lant's intense hatred for them. They reside in the south-western part of the continent.

     Cassis Pedelian

Cassis Pedelian

Click here to see his Post-Time Skip appearance
Sylvia's older brother, the heir to the house of Pedelian. His kidnapping and death in "Hell's Flower" kickstarts the story and his survival in the current timeline changes the original plot.
  • Badass in Distress: His entire situation after being kidnapped. Roxana notes he would be able to escape without her help after recovering from his wounds, so she makes the situation look a little bit more difficult to him.
  • Berserk Button: Threatening his loved ones. In addition to his livid reaction to a mere mention of his sister, he attacks Dion in cold fury for slaughtering the Pedelian search party and later calls him out for his rough treatment of Roxana at Wigdrasil.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Cassis takes his kidnapping and Agriches' taunts relatively well, until someone mentions Sylvia.
  • Bound and Gagged: He's brought that way to Agriche manor.
  • Break the Haughty: Averted. Agriches keep trying to break his pride with torture and humiliation, but he's remains defiant. Played straight in Hell's Flower, where he becomes mentally broken from the torture he went through.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: While still fighting for his life, he saves an Agriche guard from an acromantula and Sierra from being killed by one of the monsters thrown her way by Dion. He also heals Roxana's burned hand just before escaping as she urges him to run away.
  • Dead All Along: In the original story Sylvia searches for him for a long time until Jeremy reveals to her that Cassis was killed less than six months after his disappearance.
  • Death Faked for You: Roxana makes a show of an illusion of him being devoured by her butterflies in front of Lant while Cassis escapes their manor.
  • Empty Shell: In the original novel he's irreversibly traumatized by the torture he went through, with his death being seen as a Mercy Kill.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: Cassis has star-shaped white pupils in the webtoon, although the art isn't quite consistent about that.
  • Good Is Not Soft: He becomes much more ruthless after escaping the Agriches. Fontaine smugly assumes Cassis won't kill him, because Pedelians are supposed to be Lawful Good In-Universe and learns he was severely mistaken.
  • Good Thing You Can Heal: Lant Agriche mangles him up pretty badly while handing him over to Roxana. It takes Cassis some extra medicine and time, but he recovers from seemingly fatal injuries.
  • Healing Hands: In addition to his Healing Factor, he can heal others, as well as detect and purify poisons.
  • He Is All Grown Up: Cassis is seventeen at the time of his kidnapping and already looks very nice, but he really becomes Mr. Fanservice post-timeskip.
  • Hyper-Awareness: Downplayed, but he's very observant, and while his conclusions aren't always accurate, he manages to gather a lot of data on Agriches while still confined to his cell.
  • Identical Stranger: Averted. Sierra mistakes him for Ashil, but everyone else, including Roxana, points out they don't really look alike. However, Roxana later compares Cassis to her brother to emotionally manipulate him into viewing her similarly to Sylvia.
  • I Owe You My Life: To Roxana, albeit he's unaware she manipulated some events to make him feel more indebted to her. He still definitely wouldn't survive without her help.
  • The Magnificent: He's nicknamed "The Blue Scion" or "Blue Prince" by his father's men. However, he notes in the novel that he considers this to be a bit of a Motivational Lie to make him act more dignified.
  • Plot-Triggering Death: Technically it was his disappearance that started Sylvia's story, but it's the revelation of his death that puts her on the path to revenge.
  • Posthumous Character: In "Hell's Flower".
  • Reports of My Death Were Greatly Exaggerated: After his escape from Agriches he hides for three years in his family estate while Agriches and other Great Houses believe him dead. He finally shows up at the banquet in Wigdrasil, causing everyone - especially Lant Agriche - considerable confusion.
  • Reunion Vow: Towards Roxana, just before he escapes.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: After overhearing Roxana saying she doesn't want to die, Cassis correctly guesses she's aware of being poisoned but assumes it's her family doing it to her and that Roxana is hoping he will help her escape them.
  • Sex Slave: Subverted. Everyone assumes this is his role as Roxana's "toy", and Roxana deliberately keeps up the pretense in public, even putting some love bites on Cassis. It works so well Jeremy goes into blind fury seeing him, while Maria later sends Roxana an aphrodisiac as a present.
  • Stockholm Syndrome: Downplayed. While his relationship with Roxana during his imprisonment at Agriche estate is quite laden with sexual tension, he doesn't trust her fully and remains rather level-headed about their situation. After escaping Agriches it seems he really fell in love with her during their three-year separation.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: To his father, particularly in the novels, where they both have gold eyes and silver hair.
  • Temporary Blindness: After his kindapping Cassis is put under a temporary spell causing him blindness.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: In the original novel. He's only briefly introduced in "Hell's Flower" before his kidnapping and then dies offscreen three chapters later with his corpse unceremoniously dumped somewhere in Agriche lands.
  • With My Hands Tied: Cassis manages to kick Charlotte's ass while still shackled (and figures out how to loosen his magical restraints by using Charlotte's anger). Later he holds himself quite well against both Jeremy and Dion.
  • You Must Be Cold: He does this to Roxana twice at Wigdrasil, first giving her his cloak, later his coat.

     Sylvia Pedelian

Sylvia Pedelian

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/b1eae4629e6cebce12a6e04eaea4fa2e.jpg
Cassis' younger sister, the titular heroine, and the main heroine of the original novel. Most of the tropes mentioned below relate to her role in "Hell's Flower".
  • Big Brother Worship: Towards Cassis. His horrible death is what causes Sylvia to seek her revenge on Agriches.
  • Break the Cutie: Basically the plot of "Hell's Flower".
  • Determinator: Sylvia will stop at nothing to destroy Agriches, at absolutely any cost.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: She's initially shown in Roxana's flashbacks from the orignal novel and in Cassis' memories from home in early chapters of the webtoon, but her first speaking appearance happens in chapter 27, in a scene taken from "Hell's Flower". Her first actual appearance in ongoing story is in chapter 32.
  • Freak Out: Sylvia doesn't take the news of Cassis' death very well.
  • Hero of Another Story: Of "Hell's Flower". So far Sylvia appeared in the ongoing story only twice, not counting flashbacks.
  • I'll Kill You!: She swears it to Jeremy and his whole family after he tells her what happened to Cassis in the original novel.
  • The Ingenue: She's the textbook example of an otome genre heroine.
  • Light Feminine and Dark Feminine: Light to Roxana's dark. She becomes increasingly dark in the original novel, however.
  • Sex Magic / Intimate Healing: Her healing powers are particularly effective during intercourse, and she has a lot of those over the course of the original story. Yeah, that's why "Hell's Flower" is an adult novel.

Gold Veritiums

A family renowned for creating living puppets. They reside on the eastern part of the continent and their current head is Noel Veritium.

     Noel Veritium

Noel Veritium

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/38_7.jpg
Current head of the Veritium family. One of Sylvia's love interests in "Hell's Flower".
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: According to Roxana, he's particularly proficient at creating puppets but lacks ambition and was never interested in using his creations to achieve anything.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Noel is a brilliant puppetmaster, but he's also a whiny, lazy, childish brat who instantly embarrasses himself on his first outing in Wigdrasil.
  • Defecting for Love: According to Roxana, in "Hell's Flower" he initially worked with Lant, but double-crossed him after falling for Sylvia and helped her destroy the Agriches.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: His silhouette, along with Sylvia's other love interests, is shown in chapter 1 of the webtoon, while he's fully introduced post-timeskip in chapter 33.
  • Flowers of Romance: He sends Roxana a bouquet of roses. She promptly scatters them around.
  • Nosebleed: As seen in attached image, Noel stumbles over his feet and suffers from one upon seeing Roxana for the first time.
  • Reclusive Artist: In-Universe example. If you consider his puppetmaking art. Upon arriving to Wigdrasil Roxana notes without surprise he's absent again. However, later Noel surprises everyone with his (clearly reluctant) appearance at the banquet on the last day and immediately reveals how socially inept he is.
  • Unknown Rival: Jeremy seems to particularly dislike him in both timelines.

Red Gasteurs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/5_73.jpg
Another one of Five Great Families. Not much is known about them besides the fact that they reside in the north-eastern part of the continent and are somewhat martially inclined.

     Luzak Gasteur

Luzak Gasteur

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gfbrebgrf.jpg
Another of Sylvia's love interests in the original novel. As the Gasteur heir, he represents his family at Wigdrasil.
  • Death Glare: Wears it constantly.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: His silhouette, along with Sylvia's other love interests, is shown in chapter 1 of the webtoon, while he's fully introduced post-timeskip in chapter 31.
  • He-Man Woman Hater: He apparently has a phobia of women.
  • The Stoic: Looks like that at first glance, to the point where Roxana comments Luzak seems like a typical otome male lead.
    • Not So Stoic: However, he quickly loses it when Jeremy calls him out for staring at Roxana.
