     Erika Chiba

Erika Chiba

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/erikacolor_1599.png
Voiced by: Yumi Uchiyama (Japanese), Erica Mendez (English)
Course: 2
Year: 1st (Volume 1~11), 2nd (Volume 12~)
Class: E (Volume 1~11), F (Volume 12~)
Tatsuya's classmate during the first year.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: Averted with Leo. They certainly have the set up for it, but nothing actually happens beyond arguing.
  • Big Brother Worship: Really admires Naotsugu, and this is pointed out by Miyuki, who can spot her own kind.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Towards her brother and his relationship with Mari. Can be seen during the fourth novel/episode 15 of the anime. Towards Tatsuya when he also helps Angelina and Mayumi hunt down the vampires in Volume 10. When confronted by Mizuki, it turns out that Erika's been waiting for him to make the first move.
  • Curbstomp Battle: Mibu stood no chance against her, even when she used a real sword against her.
  • Genki Girl: Very upbeat and cheerful, Erika is easily the most energetic of the group.
  • Hidden Buxom: Like Miyuki, her school dress hides her fairly decent sized bust.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Erika is glad that Tatsuya doesn't pity her like other people have. She doesn't know at this point about his 'condition'.
  • Implausible Fencing Powers: Cutting a steel magic powered pole with what amounts to a "stick"? Yeah she definitely has this.
  • The Lancer: Generally supports Tatsuya on whatever choices he makes.
  • Male Gaze: Erika in bloomers.
  • Mama Bear: She takes quickly to protecting Kokoa and is the most fierce advocate for rescuing her sisters.
  • Master Swordsman: In terms of pure swordsmanship she seconds only to Naotsugu in all the Chiba clan.
  • Meaningful Name: The name Erika comes from a flower called Erika. In Japan, the Erika flower symbolizes solitude. Considering her background as a Heroic Bastard and not really forming lasting friends before the story, this makes sense.
  • My Brother Is Off Limits: Clearly disapproves of her brother's relationship with Mari.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Red to Mizuki's and Mikihiko's Blue. She is Red to everyone.
  • School Sport Uniform: She wears one during an early episode but since the series is set in the future, it is considered to be a severely outdated style not commonly worn anymore.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: Erika uses connections she has in the military to get herself and some of the other characters into the hotel where Tatsuya and the other First High students are staying for the competition. She also says she has a way of getting into the party that night as well despite not being invited as a competitor in the events. Then it turns out she and the others are working as the wait and kitchen staff.
  • The Tease: Dressed up and worked at the Nine School Competition's dinner gathering as a maid, partly to get in yes, but mainly to tease people.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: Her favorite hairstyle.

Voiced by: Satomi Sato (Japanese), Xanthe Huynh (English)
Course: 2 (Volume 1~11), Magical Engineer Course (Volume 12~)
Year: 1st (Volume 1~11), 2nd (Volume 12~)
Class: E
Tatsuya's classmate. A brainy girl and a very helpful member of the team, both of which are two reasons for critics of the series praising her.
  • Aura Vision: She can see Pushions.
  • Blind Without Them: Averted. She wears glasses to reduce her sight so that she won't be harmed by too many psions since her eyes are sensitive to a certain amount.
  • Brutal Honesty: Shy but when she is decided to speak, she is cunningly straightforward.
  • The Fashionista: Though not very big on this, she does sport different hairstyles and accessories like headbands and bumpits.
  • Power Limiter: Her glasses limit her enhanced eyesight. Because she's smart, she knows when to take off her glasses.
  • Properly Paranoid: After Mari's accident she decided to remove her glasses while watching the NSC despite Erika's recommendation to not do this since it's painful for her. Thanks to this, she noticed an abnormality with Kobayakawa's CAD which permitted Tatsuya to bust one of No Head Dragon's mole.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Blue to Erika's Red.
  • Shipper on Deck: Ships Tatsuya and Erika, as well as Tatsuya and Miyuki(!).

Voiced by: Sora Amamiya (Japanese), Kimberly Woods (English)
Course: 1
Year: 1st (Volume 1~11), 2nd (Volume 12~)
Class: A
Miyuki's classmate.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Her eyes are purple in the anime.
  • Arrested for Heroism: A downplayed example. She gets in trouble with the student council because she tried to interrupt a brawl with magic, and they can't tell whether that magic was meant to attack someone or not.
  • Bad Powers, Good People: Her magic can influence the consciusness of others, similar to brainwashing, and is capable of rewriting memories or forcing sleep. However, Honoka is such a sweetheart that she never exploits this possibility. In fact, Tatsuya theorizes that she couldn't even be forced to do so, because the very idea flusters her so much she wouldn't be able to do magic at all.
  • Childhood Friends: Shizuku has been her best friend for a while.
  • The Cutie: Honoka is sweet, cute and innocent; contrasting the more serious and focused characters in her school.
  • Dogged Nice Girl: Her feelings for Tatsuya are unrequited but she still tries.
  • Everyone Can See It: Her crush on Tatsuya. It's so obvious Tatsuya himself finally understood it.
  • Friendly Rivalry: She competes Miyuki and Shizuk while remaining friends with them.
  • Hidden Buxom: In volume 3, she is shown to be surprisingly well-endowed.
  • Homoerotic Subtext: She adored Miyuki the moment she saw her, even struggling to form enough words to greet her when they met.
  • I Just Want to Be Badass: Unlike Miyuki and Erika she lacks combat skills, and tries to do her best to be useful in other areas.
  • In the Blood: Undying Loyalty and submissiveness to their loved ones is a trait of the Elements.
  • Light 'em Up: She specializes in manipulating light.
  • Love at First Sight: To Tatsuya upon seeing his magic for the first time.
  • Love Confession: To Tatsuya, she got rejected.
  • Master of Illusion: Via light manipulation, she creates illusions.
  • Nice Girl: She's very supportive and friendly towards her friends, and is one of the few students that do not discriminate between course 1 and course 2 students.
  • Opposites Attract: She is a light magician, with all that implies, but her path takes her to the clan of night.
  • Plucky Girl: Despite the mental manipulation and vigilantism and increasingly high stakes of her friends' shenanigans, Honoka remains surprisingly resilient throughout it all. She is one of Tatsuya and Miyuki's few friends who doesn't fear them for being Yotsuba.
  • Property of Love: According to Pixie, who copied her thought patterns, she wants to "belong" to Tatsuya, give her "everything" to him and be useful to him. Poor Honoka is mortified to hear this spoken aloud.
  • Smitten Teenage Girl: She develops a huge crush on Tatsuya without knowing anything about him except that he's handsome and competent. While mostly portrayed positively, she does wonder if she even has a chance with him.
  • Tender Tears: After her victory in Battle Board, she cries.
  • Those Two Girls: She is always seen together with Shizuku.
  • Wonder Twin Powers: She has a unique connection to Pixie, rather the parasite inside the robot, that is similar to twins. This produces a magical effect that is effective against parasites.
  • Worthy Opponent: She and Shizuku became friends because they were the only magicians in their primary school strong enough to compete with each other. Honoka is awestruck when they enter a magic-focused high school and see what Clan magicians can do.

     Shizuku Kitayama

Shizuku Kitayama

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shizukucolor_8329.png
Voiced by: Yuiko Tatsumi (Japanese), Ryan Bartley (English)
Course: 1
Year: 1st (Volume 1~11), 2nd (Volume 12~)
Class: A
Miyuki's classmate.
  • A-Cup Angst: In episode 10, Honoka is about to be groped by Eimi in the bath. She calls out to Shizuku for help, and the latter responds by simply walking out of the bath. When asked why she's leaving, Shizuku simply pats her chest, then mentions Honoka having bigger breasts than her.
  • Emotionless Girl: Acts more stoic than even Tatsuya! However, she does have feelings and Erika points out many moments where Shizuku wasn't calm, good-tempered or thinking.
  • Energy Weapon: As an expert in Oscillation magic, she can shoot a laser that melts through a chunk of metal.
  • The Fashionista: Shizuku has worn different dresses and winter clothes with gloves throughout the series.
  • Friendly Rivalry: With Honoka and Miyuki.
  • Manga Effects: Though there is no single expression she uses more than once in this category, Shizuku has made facial iconography that exaggerated her whole face.
  • Passionate Sports Girl: She got her dad to fly her out every year for the NSC, which she is very enthusiastic (in her own subdued way) about finally being able to compete in.
  • Shipper on Deck: Ships Tatsuya and Honoka, before the events of the 20th volume, where she is already open requests Tatsuya refuse her friend.
  • Spirited Competitor: Shizuku chooses to duel Miyuki in Ice Pillars Break. She knows she will lose, but she wants to see how hard she can make Miyuki work for her victory.

    Angelina Kudou Shields

Angelina Kudou Shields

Voiced by: Yōko Hikasa (Japanese), Suzie Yeung (English)
Course:1
Year:1st
Class:A
A foreign exchange student from the United States, trading with Shizuku. She is often referred to as Lina.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: After taking refuge to the Yotsuba Family due to parasites infiltrating the STARS, she becomes Miyuki's bodyguard as part of her disguise after Minami left with Minoru.
  • But Not Too Foreign: She is quarter-Japanese, despite her appearance suggesting otherwise.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Shinkurou talked about a certain Major Sirius and his Molecular Divider during the Yokohama Disturbance arc.
  • Child Soldier: At the age of twelve, she had already been serving in the army for a while and had no social contact outside of it. By the time she was fifteen, she had personally killed several people, most of them traitors who used to be her comrades.
  • Connected All Along: She has connections to the Kudou Clan through her grandfather, which makes her a distant relative of characters like Retsu Kudou and Kyouko Fujibayashi.
  • The Dragon: In Magian Company. She is unquestionably the strongest of Tatsuya and Miyuki's subordinates, and the most intimate with them.
  • Dumb Blonde: Downplayed. She's by no means dumb, given her background; she's just incredibly naive.
  • Fantastic Nuke: Heavy Metal Burst.
  • Foil: Acts as one to Tatsuya. Both are strategic-class magicians that are enlisted in the army under an alias and possess connections to the Ten Master Clans. The only thing stopping Angelina from being a full Distaff Counterpart is her personality. Tatsuya is characterized by his lack of emotions and professional attitude while Angelina is far more emotional.
  • Happily Adopted: Lina is adopted into the Yotsuba family with the help of the Yotsuba's big threenote , and so two of her closest friends are now her siblings.
  • Hot-Blooded: She is easily riled up, which makes her a subject of amusement to her comrades and friends.
  • I Am Who?: She did not know she had Strategic-Class magic until, while on a mission, she cast a spell that went much, much further than intel had predicted.
  • In Love with the Mark: She is tasked with finding the people involved in Scorched Halloween and casts suspicion on Tatsuya. As time passes, however, she develops feelings for him.
  • The Mole: Transferred at First High to inquire about the Shiba siblings.
  • One-Woman Army: For the same reasons as Tatsuya, basically. She possesses the same level of practical combat experience and has just as much firepower courtesy of her Heavy Metal Burst ability.
  • Only the Chosen May Wield: The spell (Heavy) Metal Burst had been drafted, but nobody had the power to cast it until Lina tried. Not only did she succeed, she melted the surrounding laboratory.
  • Overranked Soldier: She is the High Commander of Stars but is too young for this rank. Aside from being stronger magically than anyone else, she was promoted into Stars to replace its recent losses.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: One of the thirteen revealed strategic-class magicians.
  • Phenotype Stereotype: She hails from the United States, and her appearance has the appropriate blonde hair and blue eyes to match.
  • Red Baron: Angie Sirius.
  • The Reveal: She is Angie Sirius, the strongest member of STARS, an elite force of magician soldiers of the USNA army.
  • The Rival: She quickly develops a friendly rivalry with Miyuki, being female mages with high magical power.
  • Tsundere: Loath as she is to admit, she starts developing feelings for Tatsuya. The reason she is so adamant against expressing her feelings it is explained in In Love with the Mark above.
  • Skilled, but Naive: Despite being a very formidable soldier, her naivety is one of her biggest weaknesses. Ironically, this character trait is one of the reasons she was chosen as a foreign exchange student. No one would ever expect a top-secret government agent to be a bumbling school girl.
  • The Worf Effect: She is introduced the most powerful and dangerous magician in the USNA, but she is constantly beaten by the Shiba siblings: Miyuki is shown to be both more powerful and more skilled than her, and she is quickly defeated by Tatsuya twice despite having back-up, and the second time even have access to superior equipment.
  • World's Most Beautiful Woman: She is considered as beautiful as Miyuki.

    Minami Sakurai

Minami Sakurai

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sakurai_minami.jpg
Voiced by: Kiyono Yasuno (Japanese), Emi Lo (English)
Course: 1
Year: 1st (Volume 12~)
Class: B
Minami is a Second Generation Sakura-Series and Miyuki's female guardian.
  • Barrier Warrior: Her series specializes in creating heat-resistant barriers.
  • Beleaguered Assistant: Her duties include jumping off of towers, waking up to greet Tatsuya when he comes home at 2 am in the morning, and feigning indifference to obscene sexual practices that, due to maid etiquette, she physically can't look away from.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: As Miyuki's female guardian, her role is more about serving her and physically shielding her, since Miyuki could definitely neutralize any threat more easily than she could.
  • Born into Slavery: Her technical parents sold their DNA to Yotsuba before she was born, and since that time she is actually a lifelong servant of this clan as genetically improved magicians from the Sakurai series.
  • Blessed with Suck: As a genetically improved magician, she has incredible magical talent, beauty and physical strength that can match the best noble magicians in Japan, but because she was genetically improved, her life span was cut several times and she was doomed to be a "slave" for all of her short life.
  • Combat Pragmatist: In volume 23, she stops Mari from interfering with Tatsuya's fight against Katsuto by pulling out a handgun.
  • Creature of Habit: The Yotsuba conditioned her to think that servitude was her life's purpose, so she is discomforted by being unable/forbidden to do "her" chores or refer to her superiors with casual pronouns - even if they ask her to. She is equally upset by masters who don't conform to what her training has taught her to expect.
  • Deal with the Devil: She is deeply tempted by Minoru's offer to leave the Yotsuba and become a Parasite minion alongside him, but concludes that the Parasites are too big a risk to humanity.
  • Designer Babies: She was artificially created within the Sakurai series as a genetically improved magician.
  • Generation Xerox: Honami was Miya's guardian. Now she is occupying the same role for Miyuki, Miya's daughter.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She survives shielding Miyuki magically from a terrorist bomb, but drawing on that much magic that fast leaves her hospitalized.
  • Hidden Depths: Inside, she does not approve of the engagement between Tatsuya and Miyuki, since she knows that in reality they still remain a brother and sister. But she is silent about this, believing that as a servant she not only has no right to interfere, but even talk about it.
  • Insecure Love Interest: She struggles to comprehend the depths of Minoru's feelings for her, a mere disposable slave, even though he is rather blatant about them.
  • The Gift: Her talent is comparable to the Saegusa twins despite not being from being from the Ten Master clans. Her barrier even rivals Phalanx.
  • Ninja Maid: She is not only an excellent magician and fighter, she is also Miyuki's personal servant.
  • Official Couple: In the finale of the first series, she is finally able to be together with Minoru.
  • Shipper on Deck: Ships Mayumi and Tatsuya as a solution for Izumi, who wants Miyuki to become her Onee-sama.
  • Skilled, but Naive: Being fresh out of Guardian training, she struggles with things it didn't prepare her for, like socializing or egalitarian bosses or incest.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: It is implied that she looks like a younger version of her aunt Honami, because her technical mother was a twin sister of Honami.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: A variant where the 'sugar' part is dominant. Minami is a shy 15-year-old girl, but she is also a hardened Tyke-Bomb trained to stand alongside some of the most ruthless politicians in the world. In battle, the latter part takes over.
  • Super-Soldier: As Designer Babies, she is an almost perfect soldier and guard.
  • Third Wheel: Having to share a house with Tatsuya and Miyuki would be hard even if they weren't siblings.
  • Training from Hell: As someone raised to be a Yotsuba guardian, Minami's training has been very harsh.

    Minoru Kudou

Minoru Kudou

The youngest grandson of Retsu, he is born from Makoto and his younger sister. His magic power is one of the most powerful of his generation but he can't use it constantly due to his physical frailty.
  • Augmented Magician: Makoto believed children born from him and his sister would be far more talented. He was right but Minoru has serious health problems.
  • Chick Magnet: As Miyuki, his appearance at once causes interest in him on the part of many women, and even the some guys.
  • Deal with the Devil: According to untranslated volumes, Minoru accepts Parasites into his body because they will strengthen him.
  • Delicate and Sickly: He is sick and spends a lot of time bedridden, unable to show his great magic power. It is either because of an error in the modification process or because of inbreeding.
  • Designer baby He is born from the genes of Makoto and his sister, without sexual intercourse.
  • Royal Inbreeding: His birth is the result of a technically "incest" between his father and his sister in order to attempt to obtain successor a more talented in magic. Because of this, his biological mother is also his aunt, and her legitimate daughter and his cousin, is his half-sister.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: He reciprocates Minami's feelings, but 1) she is a slave, 2) she belongs to a rival clan, 3) she has a really short lifespan, and 4) Minoru sided with the guy who's trying to kill her mistress.
  • More than Mind Control: On some level he really does think he's helping Minami by offering to put her under the Parasites' influence (because it would heal her injuries) and forcibly abducting her away from her masters (because she has been psychologically conditioned to accept her slavery). But if he were in his right mind he would care that he's violating her free will by doing so.
  • Pretty Boy: He is so amazingly beautiful that Tatsuya immediately suspects he is a genetically improved magician. Moreover, according to others, only Miyuki can compare with him in beauty. Later in the 16th volume, this phenomenon is referred to as proof that Miyuki is also the result of genetic intervention.

     Pixie

Pixie

Voiced by: Nao Tōyama (Japanese), Stephanie Southerland (English)
A maid robot leased by the school. Formal name 3H: Humanoid Home Helper, Type P94.
  • Punny Name: A way to read P94 in Japanese is pee-ku-si, which is how Pixie gets its name.
  • Ridiculously Human Robot: After being possessed by the parasite and awakened by Honoka's thought waves, she becomes more human-like in expression and also in self-awareness.
  • Robot Maid: She is a robot, dressed like a maid, and performs domestic duties. She is a Humanoid Home Helper.
  • What Measure Is a Non-Human?: The Shiba Siblings' circle of friends are pretty respectful of her and acknowledge her personhood after the robot is possesed by a parasite and develops a persona. It is the other parasites who see her as a mere machine.
