Main Protagonists

    Bianca Olivier

Bianca Olivier

The main protagonist and narrator of the series. Bianca is a shy, somewhat misfit teenage girl who begins attending Evernight Academy and finds her life changed forever in the process.
  • Action Survivor: She's this for most of the series, before becoming a full-fledged Action Girl at the end of Hourglass.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Subverted. Lucas can be seen as a 'bad boy', but Bianca is attracted more to his positive traits and gets irritated when people suggest the only reason she dated him was to rebel.
  • An Ice Person: She gains power over the cold and frost after becoming a wraith.
  • Better as Friends: With Balthazar. She cares deeply about him and is attracted to him on some level, but she's not in love with him the way she is with Lucas and doesn't think she could ever feel that way about him, even though they nearly ended up having sex in Stargazer. After they both come to terms with this, their relationship shifts into a close platonic friendship.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Downplayed example in Afterlife. She gets quite jealous when Skye starts hanging out with Lucas, but is never openly hostile to Skye and reminds herself that Lucas only has eyes for her. It's somewhat justified in that Bianca is a wraith at the time and so cannot openly be with Lucas, whilst Skye can (despite only having a platonic relationship with Lucas), which frustrates her.
  • Cursed with Awesome: After becoming a wraith. Yes, she's technically dead, wraiths have spent the last two books trying to murder her and her parents are terrified of wraiths, but she gains several perks and abilities (floating through walls, flight, near invulnerability, invisibility, fast travel etc.). She'll never die (being already dead), she can guide other wraiths to the 'light' and she can even create a corporeal form for herself and keep it indefinitely. Lucas even raises the possibility of them having children. All in all, being a wraith like Bianca sounds great. Even she eventually comes to admit it's one of the best things that ever happened to her.
  • Cute Ghost Girl / Friendly Ghost: She becomes this in the third book; despite being a wraith she's still attractive (when she's got a physical form anyway) and she's just as benevolent as she was in life.
  • Dramatic Necklace Removal: She yanks off the obsidian pendant her parents gave her for Christmas and tosses it to the floor for good measure, after she finds out they have been lying to her since she was born and never told her the wraiths were coming after her. However, as she took the time to undo the clasp properly instead of breaking the chain, she can still wear it when Mrs Bethany returns it to her.
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: She has this ability, though she doesn't realize this or fully understand what her dreams mean until late in the third book.
  • Ethereal White Dress: During a prophetic dream that foretells her death, she's wearing a white ballgown.
  • Fiery Redhead: Averted, initially - she has bright red hair, but she's shy, gentle and wouldn't say boo to a goose, though she becomes more outspoken as the series progresses. Threatening her friends or boyfriend is also a good way to piss her off, making her play this trope straight.
  • First Love: To Lucas. Both Lucas and Dana state that while he's been romantically interested in girls before, he's never felt anything as intensely as his feelings for Bianca; Lucas also states she's the first girl to whom he ever said "I love you".
  • First-Person Smartass: Downplayed, but she has her moments, mostly consisting of thinking snarky things about the school bullies.
  • Friendly Neighbourhood Vampire: Revealed to be this (or at least, half vampire) part way through the first book. She might drink blood, but other than that she's a fairly normal teenage girl and she becomes increasingly uncomfortable with idea of taking a human life to become a full vampire, even as an act of mercy.
  • Grew a Spine: After the first book she becomes increasingly assertive and better at sticking to her own decisions; she also questions things she's told more rather than just blindly believing them.
  • Guile Heroine: Although reluctantly, she lampshades that she and Lucas seem to get out of trouble by just lying their heads off.
  • I Am Not Pretty: She often states this, though several other characters see her as quite beautiful. Upon seeing herself dressed up in a Pimped-Out Dress, she states that she "might actually believe" people's comments about her looks and that although she isn't a "magazine cover knockout" she's still reasonably attractive.
  • Naïve Newcomer: At the start of the series she's quite unworldly and doesn't know very much about the vampire world despite being a vampire herself. This is partly due to being raised in a small town and sheltered by her parents all her life.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Screws up big time in the third book, by sending her parents an email to let them know she's okay, allowing Mrs Bethany to track down the Black Cross cell where she is staying and resulting in several hunters getting killed and Balthazar being tortured. When she realises, it results in a My God, What Have I Done? moment.
  • Ordinary High-School Student: Subverted, as it turns out part way through the first book that she's half vampire.
  • Pajama-Clad Heroine: From the end of Hourglass onwards, due to the fact she dies and then comes back as a wraith in her pajamas, though according to Word of God she can wear different clothes if she takes on a corporeal form.
  • Redhead in Green: She wears a green satin dress during the Autumn Ball in Stargazer. She was also fond of a green sweater, though she lost it in the move to Evernight and subsequently gets it back in 'the land of lost things' after dying.
  • Secret Relationship: With Lucas in Stargazer, though only from her end. Lucas was outed as a vampire hunter at the end of the previous book, so she has to conceal the fact they're still a couple from her parents and Evernight's staff and students, meeting with him in secret every so often.
  • Shipper on Deck:
    • In Afterlife she ships Balthazar and Patrice, feeling Balthazar deserves a shot at romance after she turned him down and they might be good together, but Patrice shuts it down fast, saying Balthazar isn't her type.
    • In Balthazar Bianca quickly recognises that Balthazar has a mutual attraction with Skye and says she's happy to see him like this.
  • Shrinking Violet: Bianca is this for most of Evernight, having difficulty standing up for herself and being so shy and awkward in social situations it borders on possible social anxiety, but she begins to grow out of it, which is lampshaded by Mrs Bethany:
"No longer the shrinking violet, I see?"
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: With Lucas. She's part vampire, he's a vampire hunter, so neither of their families approve (to put it mildly).
  • Took a Level in Badass: Becomes far more tough, independent and more of an Action Girl over the course of the series.
  • True Blue Femininity: She wears a midnight-blue gown during her first Autumn Ball. The whole part about blue being a symbol of peace and serenity is later subverted, as she gets the dress covered in blood after biting Lucas in the neck. In Hourglass, she also frequently wears a blue sundress, as she doesn't have many other clothes.
  • Unable to Cry: After becoming a wraith, Bianca finds that even when takes on a physical form she cannot cry anymore. She often wishes she could still cry, as a partial release from overwhelming emotion (either sadness or joy).
  • Walking Spoiler: Many of her character tropes spoil the plot of virtually the whole series, but especially the Plot Twist in the first book that she's half vampire.

     Lucas Ross

Lucas Ross

Bianca's primary Love Interest. A rebellious student she meets at Evernight Academy, who is hiding a Dark Secret.
  • Anguished Declaration of Love: The first time he tells Bianca he loves her, it's as he's running out the door to escape after his cover is blown. His sincerity prompts her to follow him to find out if he truly means it, despite him being a vampire hunter.
  • Betty and Veronica: A gender-flipped version: he is the Veronica to Balthazar's Betty for Bianca.
  • Bigot with a Crush: A sympathetic example. He's a vampire hunter raised since birth to think of vampires as soulless, cold-hearted murderers...then he finds out Bianca, his kind, Endearingly Dorky girlfriend, is in fact a vampire. He decides he doesn't care because he loves Bianca and he slowly starts to realize his views on vampires aren't entirely accurate, though his prejudice against them does cause issues with the couple's relationship (Bianca's overly-idealistic view of vampires doesn't help either).
  • Blessed with Suck: His experience of being a vampire is pretty awful. Yes, he's even more good-looking than ever, has cool vampire powers and is immortal, but his Black Cross family and friends now want him dead, being a vampire is literally his worst nightmare and he constantly struggles with his thirst for human blood, to the point where he's forced to run out of a classroom full of humans to keep from killing them and then begins punching a tree until his finger bones are exposed out of rage and self-hatred. He’s over the moon when Bianca restores his humanity.
  • Color-Coded Eyes: His eyes are repeatedly stated to be dark, intense, "forest" green. They reflect his short-temper and wit, as well as his duplicitous and secretive status, both as The Mole in the first book, and then in his role as Secret-Keeper to Bianca. He's also sometimes associated with life especially considering he is brought back from the dead twice.
  • Defecting for Love: Whilst he was never technically evil, he comes to realize that Black Cross are wrong about all vampires being evil and eventually ditches them after falling in love with Bianca.
  • Everyone Loves Blondes: He's described as good-looking with dark-blond, gold-brown or bronze-colored hair.
  • First Guy Wins: Although Bianca has a brief dalliance with Balthazar, Lucas remains her true love and she chooses to be with him.
  • First Love: To Bianca. She'd never even dated before meeting and falling in love with Lucas.
  • Guile Hero: He and Bianca spend a lot of time lying their way out of trouble, which Bianca lampshades. Lucas in particular is a Consummate Liar, capable of fooling even the shrewd Mrs Bethany, though it's usually with good reason.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: One of his main flaws is his short temper. He gets better at controlling it and not responding to every conflict with aggression.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: At his worst. He's short-tempered, defensive, stubborn and quick to resort to violence if he feels threatened, but he also genuinely wants to help and protect people even if it means putting his own life at risk, and he refuses to compromise his morals even if it would make things easier for him.
  • Justified Criminal: He's forced to get a job as a chop shop mechanic after leaving Black Cross, because he has no formal training or qualifications. He hates it but needs some way of supporting himself and his options are severely limited.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: A downplayed example; he's not as world-weary as some but headed this way before he meets Bianca. He can be pretty snarky and at times cynical, but still fights to protect people and sticks up for those who can't stand up for themselves.
  • Like Brother and Sister: He thinks of Dana as a sister, they having known each other since they were about twelve.
  • The Mole: He turns out to be this for Black Cross in the first book; he enrolled as a student at Evernight to find out why Mrs Bethany was letting in human students.
  • One True Love: Bianca is heavily implied to be his.
  • Rebellious Spirit: One of his defining traits. He frequently breaks rules (both Evernight's and Black Cross's) if he doesn't agree with them, and always speaks his mind and does what he thinks is right. Notably, he's a lifelong vampire hunter who defies the organization he was raised in to be in a relationship with a vampire.
  • Romantic Vampire Boy: He becomes this to Bianca in Afterlife, after Charity turned him into a vampire.
  • Secret-Keeper: He becomes one for Bianca in regards to her being half-vampire; in Afterlife he also conceals the fact she's become a wraith and followed him to Evernight.
  • Secret Relationship: With Bianca in Stargazer, though mostly from her end. Lucas can be open about the fact he's still with Bianca to Black Cross, though not about the fact she's a vampire of course.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: With Bianca. He's a vampire hunter and is supposed to stay focused on his mission rather than his burgeoning romance with her; then he finds out she's actually a vampire and things get even more complicated seeing as neither of their families are hardly going to give their blessing.
  • Tyke Bomb: He was raised from childhood to hunt vampires, telling Bianca he was sent out on missions as soon as he was "old enough to hold a stake".
  • Vampire Hunter: He's revealed to be this at the end of the first book.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Eventually becomes this with Balthazar.
  • Walking Spoiler: Not nearly as bad as Bianca, but a fair few of his tropes spoil the endings of the first book and the third book.

     Balthazar More

Balthazar More

Biancas close friend and Lucas's rival for Bianca's affections. He's four centuries old vampire who looks nineteen and the main protagonist of the spin-off, Balthazar.
  • Badass Teacher: When posing as a teacher in Balthazar. He was already a badass.
  • Betty and Veronica: A gender-flipped version: he is the Betty to Lucas's Veronica for Bianca.
  • Bodyguard Crush: A mutual one with Skye in the fifth book, with their romance developing rapidly after he vows to protect her.
  • Breakout Character: He is technically a major character, but usually takes a backseat to Bianca and Lucas, especially after the second book. However, he's one of the most popular character in the series and even got his own Spin-Off.
  • Byronic Hero: A downplayed example. He's a lot nicer than most examples, though the general traits are still there. He fits the trope most closely in the flashback scenes to his past seen in Balthazar: Tall, Dark, and Handsome, brooding, occasionally snarky, consumed with thoughts of vengeance, sticks to his own personal moral code that doesn't always align with his peers (mostly around killing humans; he has to drink human blood but only kills either as act of mercy for those already dying or goes after murderers and rapists).
  • Chick Magnet: Bianca lampshades that "every straight girl and gay guy in school" has noticed him. At one point, he's literally running away from an Abhorrent Admirer.
  • Cool Teacher: When he poses as a teacher, he quickly wins the students over with his charisma and fresh approach on history (especially the girls...).
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Hoo, boy. His parents were murdered by vampires, who in turn tortured him and turned him into a vampire, he was forced to choose between his love interest and his sister as to which would become a vampire; picking the latter proved to be a terrible mistake as she was left forever mentally unstable and the girl he loved was murdered before his eyes. He spent a hundred years or so with Redgrave's tribe, only tolerating their decadence and callous murder of humans for his sister's sake; when he eventually left, he was forced to go alone. He can never stay in any place for too long and human friends he has made have been known to reject him if they find out the truth, and he is forever haunted by the loved ones he has lost and by his failure to protect his sister.
  • Defector from Decadence: He became this in the 1700's, choosing to leave Redgrave's tribe when he couldn't stomach their lifestyle any longer.
  • Friendly Neighbourhood Vampire: He is usually a Nice Guy who refuses to harm or kill humans if he can help it, though if you push him enough he's not afraid of using violence to settle a conflict.
  • Hunk: He's over six feet tall, broad-shouldered and muscular. A lot of his descriptions emphasize how big and powerful-looking he is.
  • The Lost Lenore: Jane, his First Love from when he was still human in the 17th century. Balthazar reveals why.
  • Loving a Shadow: This seems to be part of the reason he and Bianca didn't work out, as he is implied on a number of occasions to over-idealize her to an extent. He also first noticed her because of her resemblance to his First Love, Jane.
  • Really 700 Years Old: He 'died' at the age of nineteen in 1640 and looks it. Thanks partly to his stature, he can pass for a few years older (which comes in handy for buying booze or cigarettes), but he can't convincingly pass for any older than his mid-twenties.
  • Romantic Runner-Up: To Lucas for Bianca. He's not exactly happy about it, but he accepts it gracefully and even becomes friends with Lucas.
  • Romantic Vampire Boy: He tries being this to Bianca (who is part vampire herself), but it doesn't work out. He plays it dead straight when it comes to Skye, despite his "no humans" rule when it comes to romantic relationships.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: With Jane, due to her being Catholic whilst he was a Puritan (it ended very badly).
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: He dark-haired, devastatingly good-looking and over 6ft tall.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: He eventually becomes this with Lucas; they don't stop with their bickering and insults, but it's clearly all in good-humor rather than genuinely nasty like before.
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: He has this attitude for most of the series, at one point stating that, if he could, he'd "go back and die with [his] parents". This is somewhat justified in that his immortal life has been pretty rough, though he's getting better by the end of the series.

     Skye Tierney

Skye Tierney

A human girl who attends Evernight Academy and becomes friends with Lucas and Bianca. She becomes Balthazar's Love Interest and is one of the main characters in the spin-off.
  • Action Survivor: Especially in Balthazar. Besides some basic self-defence training with Balthazar, she's got no formal fighting skills yet holds her own against vampires well enough, relying mostly on her wits.
  • All Girls Like Ponies: Skye has loved ponies and horses ever since she was kid and still loves them now, being very affectionate towards her horse. She actually makes a point of bringing her horse with her when she and Balthazar have to leave town at the end of Balthazar, stating "The vampires might have taken her home away from her, but she'd be damned if they'd get her horse too.".
  • All of the Other Reindeer: After returning to her old high school, she is generally ostracised and mocked by her classmates, who see her as a snob who thinks she's too good for them.
  • Big Brother Worship: She adored and admired her older brother Dakota, and is devastated by his death.
  • Bodyguard Crush: She has a mutual one with Balthazar in the fifth book. She already had a crush on him, but having him devote himself to protecting her from Redgrave intensifies her feelings tenfold.
  • Broken Bird: Having her brother die suddenly, her parents ignore her, her boyfriend dump her for another girl and getting stuck with psychic powers she can't control hasn't helped her well-being much. She handles it reasonably well but tends to cope by pushing aside her grief and avoiding emotional problem rather than facing them.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: Skye is the female lead of Balthazar and is a foil to Bianca, the lead of the main series, in many ways.
    • Bianca starts out as unconfident and shy to the point of mild social anxiety, with her character development revolving around her becoming more confident and resilient. While Skye has insecurities, she's comparatively a lot more self-confident and assertive, with her character development being more about her learning to be vulnerable and not bottle-up her feelings.
    • Bianca's parents are very loving and devoted to their daughter, to the point of being overprotective. While Skye's parents do love her, they tend to be more distant from her (physically and emotionally), to point of being borderline neglectful.
    • Bianca lived a very sheltered life and never had anything terrible happen prior to the first book. Skye understands loss and heartbreak all too well; her older brother died and her boyfriend dumped her for another girl shortly after.
    • Bianca is inexperienced with romance prior to meeting Lucas and aside from a brief dalliance with Balthazar, Lucas remains her first and only love. Skye was in a relationship with Craig for nearly three years until he broke up with her; she subsequently falls in love with Balthazar.
    • Skye and Bianca both grew up knowing about parts of the supernatural world but being ignorant of others. Bianca's parents are vampires and she's part vampire, but she knew nothing about wraiths; Skye grew up in a haunted house but had no idea vampires existed.
    • Bianca never liked the idea of attending Evernight Academy, misses her small-town high school and doesn't much much enjoy her time at Evernight, while Skye loved Evernight and misses it after being forced to return to her old school in a small town.
  • Cool Horse: Her horse, Eb (short for 'Ebony Wind'), who is very loyal to her even in the face of peril.
  • Determinator: In the climax of Balthazar, she throws herself from a moving vehicle despite being weak from blood loss, runs through snowy woods in the dark and then swims across a freezing river in just her underwear to get away from Redgrave's tribe.
  • Fiery Redhead: Technically she's described as having dark, auburn-brown hair, but it's close enough, and she can be pretty fiery when she wants to.
  • Haunted Heroine: Literally and figuratively. She grew up in a haunted house (though that didn't bother her
  • Interspecies Romance: With Balthazar, a vampire, in the fifth book. He initially holds her at arm's length because she's human, though she wears him down eventually. Skye admits that had she found out Balthazar was a vampire before getting to know him she might have been afraid, but seeing as she knew him (and crushed on him) for two and a half years before learning of his true nature, she finds she's completely unbothered and even finds it makes him even more compelling.
  • I See Dead People: Following the events of Afterlife, she gains psychic abilities that allow her to see the deaths of people whenever she enters the place where they died; these are usually violent, sudden or tragic deaths. She can also literally feel how they felt in their last moments, which isn't fun.
  • Jerkass Realization: She has one when Craig calls her out on laughing at Madison's cruel jokes and comments about Britnee, and for not properly apologizing when she accidentally knocked her over. Skye admits to herself that this isn't okay, even though her anger at Craig for the way he handled their break-up is justified. She feels even worse when Madison turns on her and Britnee is the one who comes to her defence.
  • Leg Focus: Balthazar repeatedly mentions her "slim" and "shapely" legs.
  • Meaningful Name: Possibly. Her name is Skye, and her eyes are described as being pale blue.
  • Near-Death Experience: Almost freezes to death towards the end of Balthazar.
  • Nice Girl: She's generally caring and empathetic towards others, standing up to bullies on behalf of others and willingly allowing a ghost to possess her despite the risk to save the ghost's life (in a manner of speaking).
  • The Not-Love Interest: To Lucas in Afterlife. She is very supportive of him and understands his grief, they become increasingly close and she even attends the Autumn Ball with him, but she ultimately just thinks of him as a friend and vice versa (she possibly even views him as something of a surrogate for her deceased brother). She explicitly describes him as "the best guy friend [she] ever had".
  • Pajama-Clad Heroine: At the end of Afterlife, she's running around helping to save the day in her jim-jams.
  • Remember the New Guy?: The first time she's mentioned in the series is Afterlife, and yet Bianca recognises her and mentions that Raquel shared a class with her a few years back and was pally with her. In fairness, there are a lot of students that Bianca and Raquel are probably familiar with but don't mention every single one, though it does stand out a bit due to it clearly indicating Skye is going to be an important character in this book.
  • Willing Channeler: For Bianca in the fourth book, allowing her to possess her so she can escape a wraith trap and stop Mrs Bethany. As a side effect, Skye develops psychic powers.

Main Antagonists

     Mrs Bethany

Charlotte Bethany

The headmistress and founder of Evernight Academy. Cold and sinister, Bianca is never quite sure if she can be trusted or what she's up to.
  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: She's tall, black-haired, often described as cold, rarely smiles (unless it's a smug smile or Psychotic Smirk) and is intimidating and aloof.
  • Badass Teacher: She's both headmistress of Evernight and their English teacher, and is one of the best fighters in the series, getting involved in several fights and always coming out on top.
  • Big Bad: She turns out to be this by the end of the series, having been responsible for much of the conflict in the plot.
  • Blood Knight: She's implied to be this, with Bianca stating that one of the few times she's actually seen her happy is when she's kicking someone's ass.
  • Crusading Widow: She's revealed to be this in the last book. She became a vampire solely because it was the only way for her to avenge the betrayal and murder of her beloved husband.
  • Dark Action Girl: She has centuries of experience in combat and can outmatch even the most skilled vampire hunters with little effort. Probably because she was trained by those same vampire hunters when she was human.
  • Dean Bitterman / Sadist Teacher: She has a tendency to be condescending towards her students, plays favourites, 'debates' students by tearing apart their opinions and making them look stupid, picks on specific students she dislikes and humiliates them in front of the class. She's revealed to be an Evil Teacher by the end.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette / Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: She's said to be quite attractive with pale skin and black hair, but very severe looking and sinister.
  • Even Evil Can Be Loved: Her husband Christopher still loves her after more than two centuries despite her becoming increasingly dark and twisted; he mostly just feels heartbroken by what his wife has become. It's enough that she's his anchor to the living world.
  • Final Boss: She's the last antagonist the protagonists face in Afterlife.
  • Given Name Reveal: Throughout most of the series, she's referred to only as Mrs Bethany. In the fourth book her first name is revealed as Charlotte by Christopher who is her husband and so naturally refers to her in less formal terms.
  • Lady of War: She's an elegant and composed Dark Action Girl.
  • Last-Name Basis: Everyone calls her Mrs Bethany save for her husband.
  • Man of Wealth and Taste: Or rather, woman of wealth and taste.
  • The Mourning After: She never got over the death of her husband Christopher, and trying to avenge his death and be reunited with him in the afterlife are her main goals. Tellingly, she still keeps a photograph of him in her bedroom and still refers to herself as Mrs Bethany nearly three centuries after his death.
  • Outdated Outfit: She tends to wear high-collars shirts and blouses, and long skirts, with her hair "piled on top of her head" in a style highly reminiscent of Victorian fashion; this is around the era she was turned into a vampire, and it also adds to her severe and intimidating manner.

     Charity More

Charity More

Balthazar More's severely mentally unbalanced sister, who became a vampire at the age of fourteen. She has a love-hate relationship with Balthazar and by extension, becomes obsessed with Bianca due to Balthazar's affections for her.
  • Ax-Crazy: Oh, yes. Her hobbies include murdering people, her extremely unhealthy, love-hate obsession with her brother (which extends to stalking her brother's unrequited love interest and her love interest, too), chucking people into dried out diving pools for the 'lols' and decapitating people with knives. Even other vampires are terrified of her because of utterly batshit insane she is.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Possibly. Redgrave's abuse of her certainly didn't help her already-damaged psyche any.
  • Cain and Abel: Zig-zagged with Balthazar. On one hand, she seems to want to kill her brother and doesn't intervene if he's in danger. On the other, she's obsessed with getting him back. It seems to depend on how she feels. Ultimately averted, as she chooses to save Balthazar and strongly implies she still loves him in spite of their troubled history. It's revealed that in the 1600's, Balthazar was the one who turned her, though he thought he was saving her.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: Repeatedly backstabs Balthazar, backstabs Mrs Bethany and eventually backstabs Redgrave.
  • Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon: Bianca makes the mistake of believing her to sweet and fragile based on her angelic appearance.
  • Heel–Face Turn: At the end of Balthazar.
  • Psychopathic Woman Child: A variation. As a vampire, she's physically fourteen forever, but is actually hundreds of years old. Some of her behaviour, such as throwing tantrums when she can't get her own way, certainly fit this trope.
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: Her family was tortured and murdered in front of her, it's implied she was tortured too, she was turned into a vampire by her own brother (who picked her over turning his love interest), which severely traumatised her and spent at least three centuries hanging out with vampires who think torture and murder is fun. It's heavily implied that Redgrave brainwashed and coerced her into a sexual relationship with him. It's not really all that surprising she turned out the way she did.

     Redgrave

John Redgrave

The Big Bad of Balthazar. He's an ancient and exceptionally powerful vampire who wreaks havoc wherever he goes and the one who made Balthazar what he is.

     Constantia

Constantia

A seductive but dangerous vampire; The Dragon to Redgrave and Balthazar's ex lover.
  • Beauty Is Bad: She's compared to a goddess in appearance, but is definitely evil, including using her looks to lure victims.
  • Best Served Cold: She reveals to Balthazar that she's been plotting for centuries to kill Redgrave, but unlike him she played the long game, feigning complete loyalty to him in order to earn his trust and biding her time until the right moment arrives.
  • Dark Action Girl: She was a warrior in her human life and can still kick some ass now.
  • The Dragon: She's been Redgrave's right-hand woman for centuries and is his most powerful and loyal follower. It turns out she's planning on betraying him and it's implied she takes over the remnants of his tribe after his demise.
  • Drink-Based Characterization: Red wine. Balthazar mentions she used to prefer absinthe as her go-to drink, but she claims it’s not as good since they stopped putting hallucinogens in.
  • Hidden Depths: She's a cruel, sadistic, self-centred hedonist...who is still suffering from the pain of being turned into a vampire against her will and likely abused by Redgrave.
  • The Starscream: It turns out she's plotting to betray and kill Redgrave, though she never actually gets to kill Redgrave herself, as Charity beats her to it.
  • Statuesque Stunner: She's literally described as "statuesque" at one point and compared in appearance to a goddess. For context, she's described as being slightly taller than Balthazar, who's already around 6 ft tall.

     Christopher

Christopher

A mysterious wraith who haunts Bianca.

Supporting Characters

     Raquel Vargas

Raquel Vargas

One of Bianca's best friends and her roommate. She's even more of a misfit than Bianca and despises Evernight.
  • Action Survivor: As of the third book, when she joins up with Black Cross. She's very much a beginner when it comes to combat, but she enthusiastically delves into training and joins Dana on patrols and in fights.
  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: She's dark-haired and is mostly aloof or outright standoffish towards people, though she warms up more to Bianca and especially Dana.
  • Ambiguously Brown: She's described as having "golden" skin and dark hair, and her first and last names (and her sister Frida's name) are Spanish/Portuguese in origin, which suggests she's Latina.
  • Boyish Short Hair: She's not very traditionally feminine and wears her hair short; in the first book, her hair looks as though "she'd haphazardly taken a razor to it", while she later gets a better-looking pixie cut done by a professional.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Her parents aren't terribly supportive of her and since childhood she's been terrorised by a malevolent wraith, who gives her nightmares about being raped by him.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Easily one of the snarkiest characters in the series.
  • Emo Teen: A more sympathetically-portrayed example. She's almost perpetually moody and cynical, makes jokes about suicide and self-harm (some of which are indicated to be only partial-jokes), and does angsty artwork in her spare time, though she's got good reasons to be complaining.
  • Hates Rich People: Raquel despises most of the wealthy students at Evernight Academy for their snobbery and cruelty; Raquel is a scholarship student from a poor background and sticks out like a sore thumb at the fancy school, frequently getting bullied for not 'belonging' there. When Alpha Bitch Courtney mocks the fact she wears the same outfit almost every day, Raquel snaps that not everyone can afford to buy every variation of the uniform. She also grumbles about the "rich bitches" not getting their parents to pay for a cellphone tower to be placed near the school. The only rich student she seems to like is Vic, who is an unpretentious Uncle Pennybags.
  • Parental Neglect: Her parents don't seem to care about her much. They never listen to her, even about serious issues such having 'nightmares' about being raped by a ghost, force her to go to Evernight even though she hates it, compare her unfavorably to her sister and don't really understand her. Notably, after Erich starts stalking and harassing Raquel, she tells Bianca she's not going to bother telling her parents, because they'd probably dismiss it, or worse, suggest she should feel flattered. On the other hand, they send her baked goods, though it doesn't exactly make up for being distant and unsupportive.
  • Scholarship Student: She comes from a working-class background and she states the only reason she got into Evernight was on a scholarship. She clearly feels out of place amongst the wealthy students and often gets mocked for it.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Mostly towards Bianca and Dana, especially the latter. She's usually quite closed-off and abrasive, but she's friendlier and more talkative around her best friend and girlfriend.
  • True Art Is Angsty: She believes this in-universe, with her artworks tending to have dark and violent themes and imagery.
  • The Unfavorite: It's hinted her parents prefer her older sister, Frida, who has a much easier time gaining her parents' approval.
  • Unwitting Muggle Friend: She's one of Bianca's best friends at Evernight and is unaware that Bianca is a vampire. Bianca occasionally feels guilty about lying to Raquel about it and it sometimes creates awkward situations due to Raquel's hatred of anything to do with the supernatural. When she accidentally learns Bianca is a vampire, she unthinkingly turns her in to Black Cross, though she later regrets it.

     Ranulf White

Ranulf White

A vampire who resembles a seventeen year old. He is very old and has a bit of difficulty understanding modern technology, but is a loyal friend to Bianca. He becomes close friends with Vic after rooming with him.
  • Hopeless with Tech: Ranulf really struggles with Modern Technology class, such as having a hard time grasping that iPods aren't powered by spirits or magic. However, he starts to get a better grasp of tech with Vic's help, to the point he can beat Vic at World of Warcraft.
  • Loony Friends Improve Your Personality: He becomes a lot less reserved and awkward after becoming friends with Vic, who is pretty 'out there'. He even begins adopting some of Vic's style, such as wearing Hawaiian shirts.
  • The Older Immortal: He was made a vampire around 1300 years ago and was raised by Vikings. As a consequence, he's often out-of-touch with the modern world.
  • Really 700 Years Old: He looks seventeen and was born in the late 7th or early 8th century.
  • Those Two Guys: After becoming roommates with Vic in Stargazer, they're rarely seen apart.

     Vic Woodson

Vic Woodson

Lucas and Bianca's close friend from Evernight; he befriends Ranulf after they become roommates.
  • Nice Guy: One of the friendliest and most open-minded characters in the series.
  • Unfazed Everyman: Upon learning that vampires exist, he's pretty chilled about it. He's also not too bothered about growing up in a haunted house.

    Patrice Deveraux

Patrice Deveraux

A popular student at Evernight and Bianca's roommate during her first year. Initially believed to be as shallow and snobbish as the others, there is actually more to Patrice than meets the eyes.
  • The Fashionista: Fashion is extremely important to her; she loves shopping, is always well dressed and gives out fashion tips (solicited or not). To really drive this point home, when she meets a character who's become a wraith, she makes a point of stating they're lucky they died wearing "cute" pyjamas and not a pair of "ugly" sweatpants they used to favour.
  • Girly Bruiser / Lady of War: She's very feminine and elegant, and also skilled enough in combat to hold off several vampires and go toe-to-toe with highly trained Black Cross hunters.

     Celia Olivier

Celia Olivier

Bianca's mother, who teaches History at Evernight.

     Adrian Olivier

Adrian Olivier

Bianca's father; a Biology teacher.
  • Action Dad: To Bianca.
  • Badass Teacher
  • Fantasy-Forbidding Father: An interesting example. He wants his daughter to be a normal, sensible teenager who concentrates on her schooling and hangs out with friends he approves of and become a full vampire like they planned. He gets irritable and dismisses his daughter when she expresses concerns about her so-called destiny, especially when Bianca flat-out refuses to become a full vampire. As it turns out, he’s got good reasons if Bianca doesn’t become a full vampire, she’ll die (Adrian and Celia were unaware she’d come back as a wraith.
  • Friendly Neighbourhood Vampire: Most of the time, unless you're threatening his family.
  • Happily Married: To Celia.
  • The Older Immortal: Mentioned as being nearly 1000 years old.
  • Papa Wolf: He will do just about anything to protect Bianca. Notably, whilst he previously had respect and trust for Mrs Bethany, he turns on her the moment Bianca reveals her true colours, largely due to the threat she poses to his daughter.

     Kate Ross

Kate Ross

Lucas's mother.
  • Cartwright Curse: Both her husbands are killed.
  • Crusading Widow: Implied to be this in the case of her first husband. She's definitely this for her second husband.
  • The Leader: Usually of the Levelheaded variety.
  • The Lost Lenore: Her first husband was killed by vampires. Her second husband meets the same fate eventually.
  • Mama Bear: Towards Lucas. Until he's turned into a vampire. She then devotes herself to trying to kill him.
  • Offing the Offspring: Attempts to murder her son after he's turned into a vampire. Twice.
  • That Thing Is Not My Child!: Has this reaction towards Lucas when he becomes a vampire.

     Dana

Dana

Lucas's childhood friend and Raquel's Love Interest.

     Courtney Briganti

Courtney Briganti

The Alpha Bitch of Evernight Academy.
  • Abhorrent Admirer: To Balthazar. She's constantly hanging around him and trying to chat him up, while he generally tries to avoid her in a polite manner. She's an uncommon example of this trope who's actually very attractive, but her personality is what puts Balthazar off.
  • Alpha Bitch: To a tee. Bianca lampshades that she acts like the "queen" of Evernight, frequently gossiping about or sneering at other students who don't fit in, and being preoccupied with fashion and partying. It's also revealed she was a cheerleader back when she was human.
  • Beauty Is Bad: Downplayed; she's not evil, but very bitchy and self-centred, with "starlet" good looks.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Towards Balthazar, even though they aren't actually in a relationship. Part of the reason she's so hostile to Bianca is due to Balthazar's obvious affection for her.
  • Everyone Loves Blondes: She has long blonde hair and is very attractive.
  • Hidden Depths: It's hinted that she's lonely and insecure, and as revealed in Stargazer, she clearly loves and misses her human family.
  • It's All About Me: Even when she's supposedly asking for information about a missing classmate, she manages to use it as a chance to tell a dramatic story and get some attention.
  • Off with His Head!: Suffers this fate at Charity's hands. She was unconscious at the time, but it's still horrifying to witness.
  • Older Than They Look: She looks about eighteen years old and has looked that way since 1984 when she became a vampire, so chronologically she'd be in her early forties by the first book.
  • Rich Bitch: One of the snobbiest and most spiteful students at Evernight, which is really saying something.

     Maxie

Maxine "Maxie" O'Connor

The ghost who haunts Vic's attic.
  • '20s Bob Haircut: She wears her hair in a straight, short bob and she likely died around 1920 (in Hourglass she states she died nearly ninety years ago; given Hourglass is set in 2010 that would put her death date right at the beginning of the 1920s).
  • Dark and Troubled Past: It's not explicitly stated, but given she's a ghost, and ghosts are usually created via homicide...
  • Deadpan Snarker: On par with Raquel as one of the snarkiest characters in the series.
Bianca: You don't have to be sarcastic.
Maxie: True. I don't have to. I threw that in at no extra charge.
  • Ethereal White Dress: She permanently wears a white nightgown, presumably the clothes she died in.
  • Friendly Ghost: Although she's blunt and snarky, she's benevolent for the most part; primarily towards Vic, of whom she's genuinely fond.

     Madison Findley

Madison Findley

A girl who befriends Skye when she returns to her home town, but it's unclear if she actually cares for Skye at all.
  • Evil Redhead: Downplayed; calling her evil is excessive, but she is a very bitchy and spiteful redhead.
  • Hot for Teacher: She makes almost no attempt to hide the fact she finds Balthazar hot.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Skye being in a sexual relationship with her teacher is very unethical (Madison didn't know that Balthazar wasn't a real teacher) and reporting him was arguably the right thing to do in such a situation. The bad part about it is that Madison clearly didn't do it because she cares about Skye, but out of jealousy and desire to stir up trouble.
  • Secretly Selfish: She claims to Skye that she reported that she and Balthazar were having an inappropriate relationship because she was concerned about her, though Skye sees through this, stating she only did it from jealousy rather than genuine concern; Madison's spiteful reaction and the fact she spread rumors about it around the school indicates Skye is right.
  • Shut Up, Kirk!: In response to Britnee's "Reason You Suck" Speech, she goes into full-on 'bitch mode':
"I don't have to take this from the school whore and the fat pig".
  • Slut-Shaming: She repeatedly mocks Britnee for being in a relationship with Craig (which alledgely began before he dumped Skye) and for the way she dresses, and calls Skye a slut and a whore for allegedly sleeping with their substitute teacher. She herself has no issue flirting with her teacher and talking about hot guys constantly, though.

    Craig Weathers

Craig Weathers

Skye's boyfriend back in Darby Glen, who breaks up with her part way through Afterlife.
  • Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder: He states that one of the main reasons he broke up with Skye was because at this stage, she'd been away at Evernight Academy for around four years; they hardly ever saw each other and when they did meet up they had little to talk about because they were living completely separate lives.
  • First Love: For Skye; they first started dating before her sophomore year. Part way through her senior year, he dumped her for Britnee Fong; Skye was devastated and even though her feelings for him have faded by Balthazar, she's still hurt by the way he broke up with her.
  • Jerk Jock: He comes across as one at first. He's the captain of Darby Glen High's basketball team and treated his girlfriend rather poorly; he slept with her despite already thinking about dumping her and knowing she was grieving for her recently-deceased brother, then broke up with her over the phone and immediately began dating another girl, with it being rumored he cheated on Skye. He's also quite standoffish with Skye and refuses to explain his actions. However, he's later revealed to be more of a Lovable Jock; he regrets hurting Skye, admits he should've handled their break-up better and it turns out he didn't cheat. He's also quick to stick out his own neck to rescue Skye from vampires.

    Britnee Fong

Britnee Fong

The girl Skye's ex-boyfriend immediately began dating after they broke up.
  • Asian Airhead: She comes across as dim-witted and vapid, often stating the obvious. Skye thinks of her as the Tipton variety at first, viewing her as a selfish Brainless Beauty who stole her boyfriend and looks down her like everyone else, but from what we see of her she leans closer to the Cutie variety; Britnee isn't intentionally malicious and just doesn't always think about what she says plus it's revealed she didn't start dating Craig until after he broke up with Skye. It's also downplayed, as in the third act it’s revealed she's not nearly as stupid and shallow as others think.
  • Curves in All the Right Places: She's described as being slightly heavy-set though Skye adds she's got her weight in "all the right places: boobs and butt".
  • Good All Along: Downplayed in the sense that she's never presented as evil, but she came across as selfish and insensitive to Skye. However, Skye eventually realizes that Britnee is actually a nice person when she stands up for her against Madison and Britnee later helps rescue Skye from Redgrave.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: Implied to be one, with Skye stating her Facebook profile is filled with pictures of her cat and she turns out to be a kind person.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Her name is spelt with two "e"s on the end; Skye bitterly jokes in Afterlife that knowing that about the girl Craig dumped her for somehow makes it worse.

     Jane

Jane

A girl Balthazar loved long ago; sadly, their relationship ended in tragedy and Balthazar rarely mentions her now due to the pain it brings.
