Here are the list of the Enemies & Bosses that you can shoot them for fun! And you and your friend, of course.

    open/close all folders

Heroes

    The Protagonist

The hero of this macabre tale. A young man, bored out of his skull and curious to see if the legend surrounding Professor Ludwig Von Tökkentäkker is true, ditches the ghost tour and ends up awakening the titular cursed circus. Grabbing a shotgun from the shooting gallery, he's in for one hell of a night.

  • Blood Knight: Seems to have a rather discomforting thrill for gunning down the hordes of the undead. Taken to its logical conclusion at the ending, where he, against all better judgement, summons CarnEvil again.
  • The Faceless: You don't get to see how the hero looks like during gameplay, due to every single scene being in first-person.
  • No Name Given: No official sources give his name. Most fans tend to go with "Jacob", but it's still, in the end, fan-made.
  • Red Is Heroic: What little glimpses we get of him show him with a red shirt. And it's very much downplayed; sure, he may be killing off the undead, but it becomes clear that he's doing it just for kicks.
  • Suddenly Always Knew That: He's a teenager chilling out at a theme park with his girlfriend when the forces of evil took over. And he starts fleeing like any innocent bystander until he gets to the shooting gallery, at which point he's suddenly a crackshot mowing down hordes of undead.

    Betty
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/carnevil_betty.jpg
Because who's a knight without his damsel?

Our hero's girlfriend, who just so happened to get roped up into this mess alongside him. She's not much of a fighter, yet somehow she keeps finding herself a way out of tricky situations. Just be aware that if she's in the line of fire, shooting her's not a good idea.

  • Damsel in Distress: Sometimes, you'll find her in a bit of a predicament, such as in a cage, or in the stocks.
  • Hostage Spirit-Link: Fire upon Betty any time you see her and you lose some health.
  • The Load: Downplayed. She gets in the way a lot of the time, but at the very least she tries to help out the best she can.
  • Offscreen Teleportation: Some of her appearances defy explanation, especially if you just saw her in front of you three seconds before, only to turn around and see her on a ledge a good distance away.
  • Unexplained Recovery: No matter how many times you shoot her, accidently or not, she always comes back none the worse for wear.

Enemies

    Enemies in the Haunted House

Zombie

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/7295767_orig.jpg
Aim for the head!

These undead wretches are all that's left of the victims of a deadly plague that swept through the town after the local farmers buried Tokkentakker. Condemned to the grounds of the Haunted House in CarnEvil, they un-live only to serve the mistress of the manor, and to seek human flesh in a vain attempt to sate their eternal hunger.

  • The Goomba: In all likelihood, they'll be among the first enemies you face, and they're relatively easy to take down.
  • Our Zombies Are Different: They take many cues from typical undead, but also have enough presence of mind to carry knives on occasion.
  • The Voiceless They don't talk, they make grunting noises.
  • To Serve Man: Part of your trip through the Haunted House takes you into the kitchen, where they're butchering corpses to serve up as food.
  • Undead Barefooter: Like most depictions of zombies out there.

Vampire Bats

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/battie_orig.png
Another classic horror mainstay.

Even the local bats have been affected by the malice of CarnEvil. Where once they might have been content to suck on the blood of small mammals, they're now drawn to humans.

  • Bat Out of Hell: A flock of killer bats who can - and will - harm the player character.
  • Zerg Rush: They tend to attack in swarms. Interestingly enough, only a few in said swarm actually get close enough to cause damage.

Gool

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/realgool_orig.png

Considering the setting, it'd be very odd if the Haunted House attraction didn't have real ghosts. And they're very much not the friendly sort.

Spiders

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/spid2.png
Arachnophobes beware!

In addition to the ghosts and zombies, players are going to have to deal with the Haunted House's pest problem. Specifically, large spiders with a taste for human innards.

  • Ankle Drag: One of them is seen dragging Betty deeper into the Haunted House, prompting the player to give chase.
  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: These spiders are easily as big as a human head. And there's a few that get even bigger.
  • Giant Mook: A few of them are a lot bigger than ordinary enemies.
  • Giant Spider: Larger than a human being.
  • Hell Is That Noise: The dry clicking of their legs on the wood floor heralds their appearance as they come crawling out of the shadows.
  • Spiders Are Scary: What'd you expect? These arachnids have a taste for your insides and they're MUCH bigger than normal!

    Enemies in Rickety Town

Tensel

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/7227918_orig.png
These lil' guys don't make toys.

Creepy, pale blue imps with a Christmas motif who menace the player throughout Rickety Town. They serve Krampus, and are said to have been the children who fell prey to him.

Termite

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/buzzy_orig.png
Oh God, get the Raid!

Termites are the large insects that infest the roller coaster and food court of CarnEvil. Like everything else in these parts, they've been mutated into bloodthirsty predators.

Carnie

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/9461442_orig.jpg
Look how happy he is to see you! Give him a hug!

Carnie is a blue zombie dinosaur, said to be the mascot of Rickety Town. He’s in charge of the tilt-a-whirl style Dino Rama ride- but he's not going to be very cuddly with you.

  • Acid Attack: Not them, but conveniently enough, one of the entire game's few Acid Launcher is located in the one area Carnies appears, allowing you to give them some nice acid bath that turns them brown instantly.
  • Expy: A bulky, technicolor dinosaur? Is that Barney?
  • Hostile Animatronics: They're animatronics from a dinosaur-themed ride which came to life, and like everything in the park, intends to kill the player.
  • Raising the Steaks: The dinosaurs are zombified and trying to kill you.
  • Smashed Eggs Hatching: Many of them emerges from the egg displays of Dinorama, and attacks you on sight.
  • Tail Slap: He can hit the players with his tail.

Smiling Bob

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2221914_orig.png
Their service is to die for.

The attendants of the bumper car ride. Don't be fooled by their friendly grins; you're better off without their service.

  • Perpetual Smiler: They always keep smiling, even as you blow them away.
  • Slasher Smile: Seeing as they're trying to kill you, those big grins aren't as friendly as they seem.
  • Wrench Whack: One of the weapons they come at you with is a pipe wrench.

Guilloteen

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/9464106_orig.png
They're working the graveyard shift.

Even a haunted carnival needs to have someone running its food courts and concession stands. That task falls to these zombified teenagers, who have a little more leeway than most in dealing with disruptive guests.

  • Burger Fool: They have this kind of job. They get to do what most in this gig probably wish they could do.
  • Food Slap: One of their main projectile attacks is to hurl corn dogs, pizza slices, chicken drumsticks, and burritos at you.
  • Improbable Weapon User: Among other things, they throw fast food items at you. These cause damage somehow.
  • Video Game Cruelty Potential: One of the areas you stop at has one of them sitting on an old-timey dunk platform, complete with a target you can shoot. Only in this case, the dunk tank is a deep fryer...

    Enemies in the Freak Show

Flap-Jack

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2911641_orig.jpg
A fine fellow...or is that fellows?

One of the more common foes you'll run into during your stay in the Freak Show. These conjoined twins will flip over and over while pursuing you, giggling all the way.

  • Bald of Evil: Their lack of hair goes hand in proverbial hand with their lack of restraint.
  • Body Horror: It's best not to think about how two human torsos, surgically grafted together at the waist, operate.
  • Conjoined Twins: Not by choice. According to supplementary material, they used to be twin acrobats who fell victim to Tokkentaker's experiments.
  • Die Laughing: The last thing that you'll likely hear from them as they go down is their disturbing laugh.
  • The Dividual: Rather literally, as they're two bodies grafted into one.
  • Shout-Out: Their laughter is awfully, terribly similar to Goofy's.
  • Was Once a Man: Two men, actually — Chester and Lester Turvey, former acrobats for a traveling circus who had the misfortune of accepting a job offer from Tokkentakker.

Rodz/Tort

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/8185162_orig.png
Rodz on the left, Tort on the right, a whole lotta pain front and center.

A pair of insane asylum patients who ended up under Tokkentaker's care. Driven into even further depths of insanity by self-mutilation, they seek only to ease their own pain by inflicting it on others.

  • Bedlam House: They're escapees from such a place.
  • Body Horror: Their bodies are a mishmash of exposed wounds and rusty metal implements hooked into their flesh. The Torts even have their vivisections straight-up opened.
  • Bondage Is Bad: Their prisoner garments resemble bondage gear, and they really don't grasp the concept of a safe word.
  • The Dog Bites Back: They're on the receiving end of it at one point; Betty manages to trick one of them into an iron maiden before slamming it shut.
  • Self-Harm: According to their official backstory, at least some of their present mutilation is self-inflicted.
  • Slasher Smile: The Torts wear metal straps holding their mouths open to look this way.

Nik-Nak the Spider Monkey

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/6855201_orig.png
What has mad science done?!

Another result of Tokkentakker's twisted genius, Nik-Nak and his fellow primates have the agility of a monkey, the swiftness of a spider, and the savagery of both.

Flem the Fly and Maggot Mike

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2942103_orig.png
You thought the Giant Spiders and Termites were bad?

Of all the abominations that reside in the Freak Show, the maggots and flies are perhaps the most disturbing. How they're created is unclear, but their hostility to the living is established fact.

  • Beast with a Human Face: An overgrown fly with a human head. The same applies for the maggots.
  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: In this case, the "creepy" part got dialed up to eleven.
  • Body Horror: Just look at them!
  • Flies Equals Evil: The flies are the first enemies you'll encounter in the Freak Show.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Implied by the posters around the Freak Show, and the skeletal remains of the Bearded Lady.
  • Messy Maggots: The Mikes inhabiting the Fly Trap make it MUCH more gross. Just take a look when the floor gives way.
  • Slasher Smile: It's hard to tell while they're zooming in at you, but the Flems sport toothy grins.

    Enemies in the Big Top

Mame

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1393266_orig.png

A legion of undead mimes occupy the Big Top. Unlike just about everything else in this game, they're not trying to kill you.

  • Butt-Monkey: They can't attack you. This does not hold true in reverse. Do the math.
  • Creepily Long Arms: Not just his limbs, but his neck too, somehow.
  • Enemy Mime: Technically, yes, though he doesn't do much of anything.
  • Everyone Hates Mimes: You're going to be mowing these guys down en masse. They can't do much to prevent that.
  • Everything Trying to Kill You: An aversion, actually. Of all the freaks and abominations in this haunted carnival, he's not a threat to you.
  • Harmless Enemy: One of the few enemies that doesn't cause any harm to the players.
  • Joke Character: They can't harm you, and mostly exist to get shot at.
  • Punny Name: Mame combines "maim" with the spelling of "mime".
    • Doubles as an Ironic Name, since he really can't maim you.
  • Video Game Cruelty Potential: He and his brethren can't (or won't) harm you, but you're likely going to have to blast them out of your way regardless.

Smeek

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/266863_orig.png
Big things get stabbed by small packages.

Smeek is one of the clowns that attacks you once you reach the Big Top proper. What he lacks in height, he makes up for in viciousness.

  • Bald of Evil: An evil clown with a bald head.
  • Big, Thin, Short Trio: Of the three traditional circus clown enemies, Smeek is the Short, being noticeably vertically challenged.
  • Depraved Dwarf: How does so much violence fit into such a compact package?
  • Creepy Shadowed Undereyes: He has black rings around his eyes.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: He has a really deep voice.
  • Mascot Mook: He is featured on the game's poster and other marketing materials, making him the second strongest contender for the game's mascot next to Umlaut. And unlike Umlaut, he's a common enemy.
  • Monster Clown: Well, of course he is.
  • Psycho Knife Nut: A mentally-unhinged clown who delightfully tries carving you up with knives.
  • Vocal Dissonance: He's got a surprisingly gruff voice for such a short guy.

Ozob

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/8330411_orig.png
Speak softly, carry a big hammer.

Ozob is a hulking brute of a clown who's got a chip on his shoulder.

  • Big, Thin, Short Trio: Of the three traditional circus clown enemies, Ozob is the Big, being huge and muscular.
  • Brutish Character, Brutish Weapon: He's a hulking brute and one of his preferred tactics is to come at the player with a strongman's hammer.
  • Giant Mook: They're enlarged version of the Smeek clowns, and can take far more punishment than their smaller counterparts.
  • Meaningful Name: His name "Ozob" comes from spelling "Bozo" backwards; "Bozo" happens to be a term for clowns.
  • Monster Clown: It'd be stranger if you didn't see some of these in the Big Top.
  • Power Fist: Another of his strategies is to haul off and punch the players while wearing brass knuckles.
  • Purple Is Powerful: He wears a purple suit.
  • Sdrawkcab Name: Their name is "Bozo" backwards.
  • The Unintelligible: He doesn't talk, he just make squeaky noises like a cat toy.
  • Vocal Dissonance: Weren't expecting a bruiser of a clown to have such a high-pitched grunt, were you?

Muertito

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/3916311_orig.jpg

Muertito are a host of Spanish-speaking Imps that menace the player in the Big Top.

Broodle

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/8516645_orig_0.png
Down! Sit! Stay!

Broodle is a large poodle in a clown suit that acts like a vicious guard dog, and is just as capable of hurting you.

Dr. Klot

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1030497_orig.jpg
Do lots of harm.

Dr. Klot is a thin clown in the scrubs and labcoat of a doctor. He and his fellow clown-docs are the final obstacle between you and Professor Ludwig Von Tokkentaker.

  • Afraid of Blood: "Oh! Icky Blood!"
  • Big, Thin, Short Trio: Of the three traditional circus clown enemies, Dr. Klot is the Thin, being very tall and skinny.
  • Creepy High-Pitched Voice: They are evil clown doctors with high-pitched, almost effeminate voices.
  • Deadly Doctor: Their idea of surgery involves a lot of cutting bodies open. Putting them back together? Not so much.
  • Giant Medical Syringe: Befitting their theme as psychotic doctors, they use gigantic syringes as weapons.
  • Lean and Mean: Dr. Klot is a tall and skinny clown who just can't wait to cut you open.
  • Mad Doctor: They've been tasked with sawing open the player's skull, removing their brain, and sticking it into the head of a cyborg Frankenstein Gorilla.
  • Monster Clown: As if Smeek and Ozob weren't bad enough, now you're dealing with evil surgeon clowns.
  • Morally Ambiguous Doctorate: Wherever these guys got their diplomas from, "do no harm" clearly wasn't on the agenda.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Their high-pitched voices and lisps make them sound like Ed Wynn.
  • Slasher Smile: A rather terrifying one; all the moreso because they're doctors.

Skeletons

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/realskele2_orig_4.png
They've got a bone to pick with you.

After zombies and ghosts at a haunted house, the creepy Christmas elves in Tinsel Town, the Freak Show's copious helping of Body Horror, and the Monster Clown parade at the Big Top, the final variety of mooks you face are... er... plain old skeletons?

Yep. No carnival themes here. Just a bunch of creepy skeletons who act as the crew for Ludwig Von Tokkentakker's zepplin. When the time comes to face him, they'll be standing in your way.

  • Boring Yet Practical: After the host of monsters you've faced up to this point, skeletons seem pretty generic. They can still kill you just as easily as the rest if you're not good with your aim and quick on the trigger finger.
  • Dem Bones: As animated skeletons, they apply for this trope.
  • Lean and Mean: Without any skin on their bones, it's hard to get leaner than that. And they're just as hostile as you'd expect from haunted skeletons.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The lack of any carnival themes suggests that Tokkentakker's done playing around, and wants you dead.
  • Scary Skeleton: They're animated skeletons in a haunted carnival. They'd better be scary.
  • Visual Pun: As the ones helping Tokkentakker fly his blimp, they're literally a skeleton crew.

Bosses/Mini bosses

    Umlaut
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/umlaut.png
Your introduction to the madness.

A flying jester skull who serves as CarnEvil's official "mascot".

  • Alien Blood: When you shoot him, he emits a small, pastel-colored cloud of smoke. Each cloud is a different color.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: He initially comes across as nothing but an irritating, pesky buffoon... until the Big Top level, where he attacks you, and puts up a decent fight.
  • Creator Cameo: He was voiced by Jack E. Haeger, who created the concept for the game among other things.
  • Creepy High-Pitched Voice: He has just the shrill sort of voice you'd expect from a demonic clown.
  • The Dragon: He seems to be Tökkentäkker's right hand man, considering that he's both the mascot of the carnival and the one who Tokkentakker sends to attack you just before fighting you himself.
  • Evil Has a Bad Sense of Humor: He finds so much amusement in the idea of the player getting killed or tortured by CarnEvil's monsters. He also makes silly puns while trying to kill you during his boss battle. As if that wasn't bad enough, he even laughs at his own jokes.
  • Evil Laugh: He cackles like a hyena at the end of each of his morbid poems.
  • Evil Sounds Raspy: His voice has a rasp that makes it even more sinister.
  • Exposition Fairy: At the start of every stage, Umlaut always gives the player a cute little poem about what they're in for. He's also the second-to-last boss.
  • Flying Face: Noticeably does not grow a body when you face him.
  • Fragile Speedster: During his boss battle, it doesn't take a lot of shots to beat him, but he moves around quickly, making it hard to hit him in the first place.
  • Hated by All: In the final level, there's a chalkboard with "Umlaut is a Kiss-Ass" scrawled on it, presumably by the other Mooks.
  • Happy Harlequin Hat: Natch, he wears a jester cap. It has two points, yellow and purple, with bells.
  • Large Ham: Much like his boss, Umlaut is not a fan of subtlety.
  • Laughing at Your Own Jokes: He loves to make jokes at the main character's expense, and follows each one with a long and ridiculously over-the-top Evil Laugh.
  • Literally Shattered Lives: His death animation. "AAAGH! I'm SHATTERED!!'', indeed.
  • Mascot: In-Universe. His image pops up all over the carnival. Even Tokkentakker himself has a picture of Umlaut on his monocle.
  • Monster Clown: Natch.
  • More Teeth than the Osmond Family: Umlaut has jaws like a shark, full of long, pointy teeth. He uses them in his boss fight with you.
  • Pre-Final Boss: He's the last enemy you fights before you challenge Tokkentakker.
  • Rhymes on a Dime: Frequently. His rhymes are often meant to threaten or insult the players.
  • Scary Skeleton: He's a living, floating skull with sharklike teeth and a sadistic sense of humor.
  • Sidekick Creature Nuisance: Whether he's seen before a level or during the final face-off against Tökkentäkker, he's downright guaranteed to get on your nerves.
  • Skull for a Head: His entire head seems to be devoid of skin, flesh, or any living organs. Save for the eyes.
  • Stealth Insult: He tosses one of these your way during the intro to the Freak Show, claiming you've got what it takes to be the "star" of this menagerie of lunatics.
  • Villainous Harlequin: His jester's cap and malevolent nature cement him as such.

    Hambone
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hambone.png
Slasher villain extraordinaire.

A maniac in a hockey mask with a chain gun for a left arm. Sub-boss in the Haunted House. He later returns as "Hambone the Revenge".

  • Arm Cannon: Hambone's left arm, doubling as a minigun. He swaps it out for a skull launcher for your second confrontation.
  • Attack Its Weak Point: You can stagger him in the first battle by shooting out his legs, reducing them to bloodied rags and forcing him to his knees momentarily.
  • The Berserker: Screaming in incoherent rage while attacking wildly, taking a lot of punishment to put down, and not having much of a strategy beyond Attack! Attack! Attack!.
  • Captain Ersatz: Looks an awful lot like Jason Voorhees, with the mannerisms of Leatherface.
  • Chained by Fashion: He sports manacles with broken chains on his left ankle and right wrist, presumably from when he was locked up in someone's basement.
  • Cool Mask: He wears a hockey mask over his face. Said mask can be shot off, exposing his zombified features.
  • Gatling Good: Initially, Hambone's prosthetic arm is a minigun. During his second encounter, he's swapped it out for a cannon that shoots explosive skulls, instead.
  • Implacable Man: Like any proper slasher villain, Hambone's tough to kill—it takes two boss fights before he stays down.
  • Revenge of the Sequel: Parodied in-universe with his return as "Hambone the Revenge".
  • Stripped to the Bone: Shooting his limbs enough times will expose the bones underneath.
  • The Unintelligible: Unlike many of the other bosses, he doesn't bother with hammy taunts—he just screams in rage.

    Evil Marie
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/evilmarie.png
Decadent, depraved, deadly.

A ghoul who lost her head, reclaiming it in death along with her lust for violence. Clearly based on Lizzie Borden and Marie-Antoinette. Boss of the Haunted House.

  • Aristocrats Are Evil: Considering her formal gown, it's safe to say that she was of nobility when she was alive. And considering the paintings you find in the Haunted House, she was probably quite sinister even before her death.
  • Ax-Crazy: Rather literally, too, considering how she gleefully tries hacking the player to bits via her huge ax.
  • Bondage Is Bad: Considering what she wears beneath her gown, Marie seems to be a fan of BDSM.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: She introduces herself as Evil Marie, for crying out loud!
  • Clothing Damage: Evil Marie loses clothing as you continue to damage her, until she's left in her (metal) underwear.
  • Combat Stilettos: Marie wears high heels, though as she can levitate whatever inconveniece they might cause is downplayed.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Evil Marie screams quite, er... "suggestively"... when she's IMPALED on a fountain.
  • Enfant Terrible: There is a portrait in the house with her as a child with a bloody axe.
  • Fan Disservice: She's rather well-endowed, and the ensuing Clothing Damage from the boss fight leaves her in nothing but her underwear... while she's trying to murder you with an axe, wearing a horrific Slasher Smile all the while.
  • Fangs Are Evil: Evil Marie has fangs like a vampire.
  • Foreshadowing: As you explore the Haunted House level, you can see a portrait of a young girl holding a bloodstained axe. Guess who that little girl grew up to be?
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Her death scene, where she falls onto an obelisk. The scene even repeats, showing the impalement from multiple angles.
  • Licking the Blade: Well, nuzzling it anyway—Marie rubs the blunt side of her axe along her cheek at one point during the fight with you.
  • No Historical Figures Were Harmed: Her gown and powdered hairstyle give her a striking resemblance to Marie Antoinette.
  • Pink Is Feminine: She wears a pink gown...spattered with blood.
  • Power Floats: Particularly in the final stage of the battle, where she floats over the fountain while hurling ghostly blasts at you.
  • Rise from Your Grave: Marie emerges from the mausoleum in the graveyard.
  • Slasher Smile: She shows off her ghoulish fangs this way.
  • The Smurfette Principle: Marie is the only female boss, and possibly the only female enemy in the entire game. Some of the Tensels, Guilloteens, and Broodles could be girls, but their inhuman forms make it difficult to be sure.
  • Stocking Filler: She rocks a pair of these beneath her gown, apparent when your shotgun fire begins tearing it away.
  • Turns Red: When brought down to the very dregs of her life meter, she teleports to the fountain and engulfs herself in a spiraling tower of ghostly energy, hurling energy blasts at you.
  • Undeathly Pallor: Her skin is bluish-white, as an indication that she's one of the undead.

    Krampus
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/krampus.png
Naughty or nice, you'd better beware.

A demonic version of Santa Claus found in the Christmas-themed ice rink of the CarnEvil's amusement park. Boss of Rickety Town.

  • Absurdly Sharp Claws: He sports these.
  • Attack Its Weak Point: He is easier to kill once you expose his heart and shoot that.
  • Bad Santa: Krampus is actually based off a mythical creature that kidnaps naughty kids and tortures them.
  • Braids of Barbarism: He's got these on his beard.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: This monster has a deep, growly voice.
  • Gratuitous German
"Hallo kinder... mein name ist Krampus!" ("Hello children...my name is Krampus!")
  • Horned Humanoid: He has reindeer antlers on his head.
  • Incoming Ham: From the moment he appears from behind the Christmas Tree, he makes it clear he loves to be loud:
    Krampus: "Mein name ist KRAMPUS!"
  • The Krampus: Rather than being the traditional Krampus with the appearance of a satyr with a long tongue, he looks more like an evil mutant Santa Claus.
  • Pyromaniac: He tosses burning coals from his sack.
  • Rollerblade Good: He wears ice skates with spikes on them and glides around the ice rink.

    Eyeclops
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eyeclops.png
He's got eyes for you.

A two-headed, multi-eyed giant encountered before entering the Chamber of Horrors. Sub-boss of the Freak Show stage.

    Junior/Deaddy
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/junior.png
Don't wake the baby.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/deaddy.png
This is no child's play.

A gigantic Frankenstein-esque infant stitched together from parts unknown who lives inside a giant playpen. Boss of the Freak Show. Can be substituted with a Killer Teddy Bear named Deaddy.

  • Baby Talk: Of the distorted variety.
  • Bad with the Bone: Baby will rough you up using a bone rattle.
  • Bears Are Bad News: What's worse than a teddy bear? A giant, homicidal teddy bear. Unfortunately, this description fits Deaddy like a glove.
  • Bowdlerise: The developers added the option to replace Junior with Deaddy because they felt that shooting a giant, stitched-up, vomiting baby would be too disturbing for some players, even with the insanity of the rest of the game.
  • Enfant Terrible: The rattle Junior carries is made out of bones. He also attempts to crush the players by throwing skull rattles and safety pins at them or simply beating on them.
  • Frankenstein's Monster: If Frankenstein had sculped his creation in the form of a baby or a teddy bear, this would be the result.
  • Ironic Nursery Tune: No matter which one you fight, their boss track includes a twisted version of "Pop Goes The Weasel".
  • Killer Teddy Bear: Deaddy is an enormous, monstrous teddy bear.
  • Lightning Can Do Anything: How either of them is brought to life.
  • Punny Name: Deaddy. Dead teddy.
  • Route Boss: Only one of them can be faced off against - the other will be nowhere to be found. And unless you just so happen to have access to the options, whoever you fight against is completely subject to the whims of someone else.
  • Shock and Awe: The electrified crib is what ultimately does him in.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: During the battle with Junior (or Deaddy), the players enter the giant doll house to take cover. Only the boss rips the roof off and proceeds to puke all over the players.

    Professor Ludwig von Tökkentäkker
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ludwig.png
The ringmaster of the greatest show unearthed.

The owner of CarnEvil, ringmaster of the Big Top, and the Final Boss of the game.

  • Aristocrats Are Evil: Of the "would be a Nazi Nobleman, except he predates the Nazis" variety.
  • Badass Longcoat: The lower part of his coat boasts a long tail.
  • Bald of Evil: He's the evil leader of the carnival, and he has male pattern baldness.
  • Beard of Evil: He's the main villain, and he has a long, pointy beard.
  • Big Bad: He's your final opponent and the creator of the evil carnival.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: Like you would not believe.
  • Combat Pragmatist: After you defeat Umlaut, Tökkentäkker shoots you once before you get a chance to start shooting him.
  • Control Freak: Implied. He gets rather furious when the protagonist refuses to go along with having his brain removed and installed into the skull of a cyborg gorilla.
Tokkentaker: "Welcome aboard. From this study, I have observed your every move. BUT YOU DO NOT OBEY! Prepare to die!"
  • Cowardly Boss: He sends Umlaut to attack you right at the start of his boss fight, makes you chase him around his blimp, and stays at a distance while his skeleton minions rush you down.
  • Creator Cameo: Like Umlaut, he is voiced by Jack E. Haeger, one of the main creators of the game.
  • Evil Is Hammy: His pre-battle dialogue and Boss Banter are hilariously dramatic. Probably justified, as he's a ringmaster and would have shouted a lot while performing in the circus.
  • Evil Laugh: He does an epic one just before the final battle. Interestingly, though, in-game, the sound is cut off by him summoning Umlaut. The full clip is much longer, with three "sections" compared to the one heard in-game.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: He's the main antagonist, and he speaks with a deep, booming voice.
  • Flunky Boss: As you chase him across his blimp, you'll find yourself facing his skeleton crew.
  • Germanic Depressives: He's an evil German guy with a Control Freak complex. He does do an Evil Laugh and other Evil Is Hammy behaviors, but is otherwise very gloomy.
  • Gratuitous German
    "Auf Weidersehen!" ("Good-bye!")
    "Dumpkopf!" ("Idiot!")
    "Scwheinenhund!" ("Pig-dog!")
    "Rosenzweig!" ("Rose branch!")
  • Herr Doktor: Tökkentäkker is very obviously German. He's also a professor, though it's unclear exactly what he's a professor of. However, he does enjoy turning people into twisted carnival freaks.
  • High-Class Glass: He wears a token-styled monocle on his left eye, with a pattern of Umlaut on it rather than the regular one that the Protagonist used to summon CarnEvil.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: How does Tökkentäkker bite the dust? He gets turned into red mulch by one of the propellers on his own zeppelin! The game even repeats the scene a few times, because it's that satisfying to finally kill him.
  • Jerkass: He even insults you by calling you "Dumpkopf!" & "Scwheinenhund!", both of these german words means "Fool!" & "Pig dog!".
  • Load-Bearing Boss: The moment he dies courtesy of being shredded by his zepplin's propellers, the whole airship promptly starts exploding. Not to mention that his death heralds the disappearance of CarnEvil itself.
  • Macross Missile Massacre: Fittingly for a ringmaster, Tökkentäkker's Desperation Attack near the end of the Final Boss battle is to launch an endless stream of fireworks at you.
  • Made of Iron: Compared to other enemies, he can take dozens of shots without bearing any visible wounds. Only near the end of his battle, when he throws fireworks at you, does he finally start to dismember.
  • Meaningful Name: Tökkentäkker is a pun on "token taker". This refers to both the token required to summon him and the endless amount of tokens you need to "give him" to beat the game.
  • Morally Ambiguous Doctorate: Professor von Tökkentäkker. All the atrocities and stitched-up horrors in CarnEvil seem to indicate he Majored in Biology, Minored in Civil Engineering, and took Honors courses in Batshit Insanity.
  • Obviously Evil: Although he's perhaps the most normal-looking member of the carnival, he still looks absolutely sinister. His deep voice, over-the-top German accent, and control freak tendencies don't help.
  • Perpetual Frowner: He's always seen frowning. This fits with his Germanic Depressives personality.
  • Poirot Speak
    "Dumpkopf! Scwheinenhund!" ("Idiot! Pig-dog!")
He also lets out things like "Ach du lieber!" if you whittle him down to certain segments of his health.
  • Prepare to Die: He speaks this word-for-word prior to the final battle.
  • Punny Name: His last name is a pun on "Token Taker", appropriate for the final boss of an arcade game who will probably take more than a few of your tokens to put down.
  • Repulsive Ringmaster: By virtue of being the leader of this twisted nightmare of a carnival.
  • Sic 'Em: His first phase sees him send Umlaut after you.
    "UMLAUT! GET HIM!"
  • Skeletons in the Coat Closet: His outfit's shoulder-pads are skulls. They're likely the real deal instead of a fake prop.
  • Teleport Spam: Tökkentäkker frequently teleports throughout the battle, causing your character(s) to chase after him to a new part of his Cool Airship.
  • Token Human: He's the only member of the carnival who is physically a normal human being. That said, he's still undead, and he can teleport.
  • The Von Trope Family: As befitting a German ringmaster, he's Ludwig VON Tökkentäkker.
