Ambiguously Bi / Anime & Manga

Go To

Ambiguously Bi in Anime & Manga.

A No Recent Examples rule applies to this trope. Examples for episodic works shouldn't be added until end of season for the season introducing the ambiguity (or after 3 months, for episodic works without seasons). This is to allow time for the story to develop the character and resolve ambiguity. There is no waiting time for non-episodic works.

  • The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You has its own page for Homoerotic Subtext, which shouldn't be too surprising, considering the manga's premise.
  • Adekan:
    • Ippei falls for Anri when he thinks he's a girl while he's Disguised in Drag and also gets quite close and fanboyish around Kojiro.
    • Shiro is occasionally seen with scantily clad women, and also doesn't mind getting intimate with Anri or Koujiro, but often protests against the many guys that are attracted to him and denies being into men.
    • Kojiro is a Chick Magnet with a fondness for girls, and in regards to boys he can get quite close with Shiro and Ippei, but also maintains disgust towards the assumption that he's interested in men when it's commented on by other people.
    • Umeno-suke is crazy for Mutsukuchi-sama (a beautiful female) and also demonstrates some interest in Shiro and Anri even after discovering they're male, calling them "beautiful" and "sensual".
  • In Agravity Boys, Chris' male friends fear they may fall for Chris if they see Chris shirtless.
  • Leone from Akame ga Kill! is definitely one of these, so much that it's arguable how ambiguous she really is. She acts like a huge tease towards Tatsumi, claiming him as her "territory" shortly after meeting him. But she also seems to have a crush on Akame, and interacts with her in much the same way.
  • In Angel Beats!, Hinata often tells Otonashi he likes him (it's used as a joke, maybe). Later, he tells Yui he likes her and would marry her if they met when they were still alive.
  • Rosiel of Angel Sanctuary. No Sense of Personal Space in a Cast Full of Pretty Boys? Yes. Combine with the outfits and dilute with No Sex Allowed In Heaven? Oh yes.
  • Reiner Braun from Attack on Titan. He claims to be gay in one conversation, but has been known to express the desire to marry Krista whenever she's kind to him, and has stated his intentions to protect her. He's also shown to be suffering from identity problems, and is a spy and confirmed liar, as such it's unclear whether he's genuinely gay, bisexual, or just messing with everyone.
  • Azumanga Daioh:
    • Minamo has a rather Les Yay filled relationship with her friend Yukari, and Yukari mentions a love letter in the past. The manga confirms they went to an all-girls school, so unless she fell for a male teacher or a boy outside of school, it's probable she gave a girl the letter. Still, she talks about dating men and has been implied to have had sex with them.
    • Kaorin has a Single-Target Sexuality towards Sakaki, yet when confronted on it, she gets flustered and says she wouldn't mind if Sakaki was male. It's hard to tell if she's deeply closeted about being lesbian, is bisexual, or if Sakaki is the exception for her.
  • Bakugan: Marucho is clearly interested in some girls, especially Idol Singer Jewel and Alice makes him blush at one point, but he also gets Ho Yay with Ren, especially this scene where he actively puts his hand on his crotch while wearing a skin-tight space suit.
  • Beastars: The main character, Legosi, has a love interest in the form of the female rabbit Haru, but he has a whole lot of subtext in his relationship with the male deer Louis. A chapter of the two in the hospital has Legosi finally realizing that he isn't strictly Haru-sexual, but is actually attracted to herbivores in general after noticing how beautiful he finds Louis to be, indicating that Legosi might be attracted to species over gender.
  • Berserk:
    • Griffith, at least before the Eclipse, where afterwards he probably doesn't concern himself with sexuality or romance anymore. Even though we know that Griffith had sex with Princess Charlotte just to make himself feel better after Guts left, he might very well have had some unrequited feelings for both Guts and Casca, judging from how a) he was a complete Yandere when it came to Guts, and even is depicted thinking and fixating on him while having sex with Charlotte, b) before activating his crimson behelit a la Despair Event Horizon, Griffith did have a vision of he and Casca sharing a quiet, peaceful life together, child and all, and c) he gave Guts and Casca the Kubrick Stare when it was evident that they had become a couple.
    • On the other side of this is Guts. Casca is his love interest, and he had a sexual relationship with her, but his complicated subtext with Griffith runs both ways, and cannot be ignored. For one thing, while normally a man who Hates Being Touched, he seemingly has no problem with Griffith intimately cupping his face, all while looking completely dazzled. There is also the reason why Guts ultimately leaves the Band of the Hawk, which is directly stated to be so that he can stand closer to Griffith, as Griffith claimed only an equal could stand by his side.
    • Also, Dark Magical Girl Rosine. Platonic or not, she has a very strong obsession with having her Morality Pet Jill stay with her after being separated for so long. She demonstrates this by telling Guts that Jill is "hers" after realizing that Jill has somewhat of a crush on him. While flirting with him, commenting on his attractiveness, and attempting to kill him. And later, when Jill definitely refuses her We Can Rule Together offer, Rosine captures her and tries to turn her into one of her pseudo-Elves by force.
  • Betrayal Knows My Name:
    • Luka was Yuki's lover when Yuki was a girl but also seems to still have feelings for Yuki now that he's been reincarnated as a boy.
    • Hotsuma shows a Tsundere side around both girls and boys (Yuki especially) and when Shuusei spent at least one former life as a girl, she and Hotsuma were married. After this is revealed, Hotsuma starts talking about how beautiful the female Shuusei was, and how beautiful male Shuusei would be if he wore girls' clothes, and it all ends with Luka calling them on still acting like a married couple and walking away to the sound of Hotsuma's vain protests.
  • Several of the boys in Big Windup! have expressed very explicit interest in girls, but they have a lot Ho Yay between each other.
  • BirdMen gives us Eishi Karasuma, a pessimistic boy who finds his friend Tsubame attractive, gets a sudden crush on a female classmate, and then comes across as blushing and flustered more often than not around Takayama.
  • Black Butler has several characters like this, given their tendency to engage in Ho Yay:
    • Viscount Druitt takes a liking to the maid Hannah and plenty of pretty ladies, but also appears to flirt with Ciel both when he's Disguised in Drag and when he's dressed normally as a boy. He also comments on Joanne's looks, and tries to kiss him when the latter is dressed up as Snow White in a side story. He also gets very excited when he looks at Edward in the behind-the-scenes episode, seeing flowers and Bishie Sparkle. There's also his referring to Alois as an “unsullied beauty”. However, in one strip he acts completely disinterested in, and even shows contempt towards, guys at his party, instead preferring girls.
    • Sebastian had sex with Matilda and Beast, and also has a ton of blatant Ho Yay with Ciel and other males.
    • Ciel gets this from his blatant Ho Yay, with Sebastian especially, but also with other males, coupled with his romantic feelings for his promised wife Lizzie. He even seems to occasionally reciprocate the male attention at times, though he could also just be trying to manipulate them for his own purposes.
    • Elizabeth is pretty much an Official Couple with Ciel as they are happily engaged to be married, and is implied to be turned on in the behind-the-scenes episode for season II, when she watches Ran Mao treat Mei-rin in an intimate and flirtatious manner. She responds very excitedly to seeing this and takes pictures. Also, in terms of merchandise, the 2016 Funtom Café includes a Valentine's Day-exclusive charm of what looks like Elizabeth giving Sieglinde a heart-shaped chocolate while the two girls are inside a bottle filled with chocolates. They were also depicted together for the Valentine's Day picture the year prior. She also is very appreciative of Nina when she hit on her and chased Mei-rin around once because she wanted to dress her up and make her cuter.
    • Edgar enjoys dancing with ladies but his interactions with Ciel are suspect. There's also his actions around Joanne.
    • Ran-Mao sits on Lau's lap as eye candy, and acts flirtatiously around him and Ciel, but also once stripped Meirin in the behind-the-scenes episode and had them both switch clothing before rubbing Meirin's thigh seductively and grabbing her boobs. They also get some in the manga proper as a sort of Lovely Angels dynamic when the two go undercover in a household and work as maids.
    • The Trancy triplet Timber is attracted to the beautiful maid Hannah, comments that Alois's crying is cute, and says that he'd be willing to love Alois because of how heated and violent he can be. However, he also says that he doesn't know what Alois finds so attractive about Claude.
    • Bravat comments on the feminine features of a busty woman and Elizabeth's more flat chest, implying that he likes well-proportioned women, but also acts ambiguously-flirtatious to Sebastian and calls him pretty. There’s also his implied devotion to Ciel.
    • Lau has Ran-Mao on his lap as eye candy and appears quite close with her. He also shows signs of being teasingly flirtatious towards Ciel and gets some moments with Sebastian.
    • Meirin is definitely attracted to Sebastian, but shows some questionable moments around females. Chapter 93 features Meirin peeking through her fingers when Snake's pet snake slithers in between a maids boobs with the maid saying "Not there!" In season 2 of the anime, when the sexy maid Hannah sticks her fingers in her mouth to wet them to play an instrument, we see Finnian, Baldroy, and Meirin blushing and looking interested at the sight. Also, Meirin and Ran Mao get some Les Yay in the behind-the-scenes OVA where Ran Mao pins a struggling Meirin down to strip her, and the scene is censored before we see they have switched clothes, with Meirin blushing as Ran Mao caresses her thigh and grabs her boobs. They also get a scene where they tie each other’s corsets in the manga and have a Lovely Angels dynamic there. Meirin even calls Angela "beautiful", takes care of her, and nosebleeds at the sight of her getting it on with Pluto, a human male/dog hybrid.
  • Black Lagoon: Revy is implied to have developed feelings for Rock and acts as a Clingy Jealous Girl to him. However, she once hinted in an interaction with Jane (who expressed an interest in bringing Rock into an orgy) at a possible past homoerotic sexual experience playing the man's role to a group of women while in prison. She claims, whether truthfully or not, to have been so good that the women couldn't achieve orgasm with their fingers anymore. She then threatens to rape Jane if she keeps trying to rope Rock into an orgy. Thus, it's unclear if Revy is either a bisexual, or a heterosexual that experienced Situational Sexuality (or even a bi-curious phase) while imprisoned or simply resorted to Faux Yay as an intimidation tactic against Jane.
  • Bleach: Riruka falls to her knees when first taking a glimpse at Ichigo's face, and later acts Tsundere towards him. She also takes a great deal of interest in Orihime; invading her personal space, sharing her doughnuts with her, and they end up sharing a bed when recovering, and she secretly appreciates Orihime crying for her. When she returns to the action, she isn't just tsundere with Ichigo, she focuses on Orihime, too. The Chapter 451 cover also depicts them under an Umbrella of Togetherness.
  • Blue Flag: The protagonist, Taichi Ichinose, has a clear crush on Kuze, a cute shy girl who is in love with his childhood friend, Touma. However, he does have a really intense connection with said childhood friend, including blushing extensively when they get too close and praising him endlessly. It's such to the point that when they start dating, Kuze actually assumes that Taichi is also attracted to men, as when she finds out that Touma is in love with Taichi, she fears he might leave her for him. The final chapter reveals that she was right. At some point between the end of their relationship and seven years later, during Kuze's own wedding to another man, Taichi is shown to have already married Touma.
  • A Bride's Story: Both Anis and Sherine love their husbands, but it is very much implied that their feelings for each other are more than just simple friendship. After Sherine's husband dies, Anis begs her own husband to marry Sherine as well, which leads to Anis and Sherine getting even more intimate, and their story arc ends with all three being happily in love with each other. This arrangement results in Anis spending chapter 83 gushing over Sherine and chapter 85 gushing over her husband. Given the sociohistorical context — private and public segregation of sexes, as well as strong incentives to marry — it's very difficult to tell what these two women’s preferences are.
  • Carried by the Wind: Tsukikage Ran: Meow. She shows quite a bit of interest in handsome young men, but also likes to ogle pretty girls on occastion.
  • The Case Study of Vanitas: Vanitas gets Homoerotic Subtext with Noé from the beginning, telling him occasionally that he's very interesting and growing a very strong attachment to him over time. He also flirts with Jeanne heavily and professes love for her, though that's just him messing around until he does start crushing on her for real.
  • When Ryou and Nagisa meet in CLANNAD, Ryou thinks it's a love confession. She accepts before noticing it wasn't that.
  • Code Geass:
    • Suzaku has a canon love interest in Euphemia, and has a fair share of Homoerotic Subtext with Lelouch. In one of the extra "Q and A sessions" with the characters, Suzaku is asked who the most important person in his life is. He answers he can't choose between Euphie and Lelouch.
    • Milly Ashford is strongly implied to have feelings for both Shirley and Lelouch.
    • Lelouch himself fits; though he finds various girls (such as Shirley and Kallen) attractive and clearly has emotional bonds with them, he tends to get overemotional and even out of character when it comes to Suzaku. It's to the point he comes across as a massive Tsundere as he, in one breath, will complain about Suzaku working for the enemy, and then follow it up by worrying over him.
  • Maso in the US dub of Crayon Shin-chan is quickly Flanderized into this. Almost every word that comes out of his mouth is either homosexual innuendo or something pertaining to his attraction to Ai (a girl).
  • Most likely Jeremy and definitely Ian from A Cruel God Reigns with Jeremy's roommate William.
  • Tome from The Daughter of Twenty Faces. The finale hints that she may have something going on with a male detective character, but a much earlier episode seemed to insinuate that she's attracted to women. After hearing Tome say that she used to play flirty games with other girls when she was a teen, Chiko and Shunka wonder aloud what that means.
  • Tsukushi and Kazama from Days are both explicitly into girls but have heavy Homoerotic Subtext with each other, even for a sports series. Kazama gets happy just remembering Tsukushi's smiling face (not soon after they met at that), he gets easily offended when people say things about Tsukushi, they hug quite a bit, and Kazama even thanks his mother for giving birth to him because he met Tsukushi.
  • Death Note:
    • Strong hints abound that Touta Matsuda is this, if not just outright gay, though he does seem attracted to Light's sister Sayu in the second half of the series. He is known to be quite "fond" of Light, following him in a manner that could easily be indicative of a crush. His actions near the end as he shoots Light and screams at him almost look like the reaction of a lover learning the truth about his significant other. And then there's his throwing an arm around a blushing male coworker. There's also this exchange between him and Ide:
Ide: Your reasoning is not actually reasoning, but desire. Your desire. Light was Kira, but you liked Light, didn't you?
Matsuda: Desire... it may be so.
    • Sayu, whose interest seems to be primarily in women; she happily flips through the Porn Stash she finds in her brother's room, states that Misa is "her type", and says she has no interest in dating men. However, she also mentions having a crush on a male celebrity, and when she's 18, she says that she might consider dating Matsuda if he were closer to her own age.
    • L claims to be attracted to Misa (even though he says he finds her annoying), but he has enough Ho Yay/Foe Romance Subtext with Light to power a small village. However, L also has No Social Skills, so his tendency to stare creepily at/obsess over men and women might just be him being weird.
    • Matt. He's very close and devoted to his companion, Mello, and lives with him. On the other hand, he definitely takes notice of Misa and comments on how attractive she is.
  • Descendants of Darkness: Tsuzuki is very frequently attracted to women, but also enjoys flirting with and teasing Hisoka on occasion. However, he has also called Boys' Love "icky" and is grossed out by Muraki’s blatant interest in him, though Muraki is pretty creepy to begin with.
  • Lavi of D.Gray-Man goes nuts whenever he sees a pretty girl, but he also has considerable Ho Yay towards Allen and Kanda.
  • D.N.Angel: It's hinted that Satoshi Hiwatari may have feelings for Risa, and in the anime it's hinted that he may have romantic feelings for Daisuke. When this is brought up, he doesn't openly confess to anything, though he never denies the accusations either. If anything, he encourages the idea, which has led to much confusion regarding his motives. It has been stated outright by Dark that Daisuke is the one who causes Satoshi to turn into Krad. Krad himself has hinted at Satoshi possibly wanting more than a friendship from Daisuke at least once in the anime, and more than twice in the manga. In any case, he at least wants to be close to Daisuke, despite the danger of Krad to both of them.
  • Digimon Adventure 02 has a few notable instances:
    • Davis/Daisuke Motomiya has a blatant, [[Hopeless Suitor albeit one-sided]], crush on Hikari and is shown to be very jealous of Takeru's close friendship with Hikari. Despite this, he has a LOT of Ho Yay moments with Ken Ichijouji (even when the latter was still the Digimon Emperor), even if a lot of them are thanks to the nature of Jogress Evolution, such as being able to hear Ken's heart. When Ken gets kidnapped, the two characters who show the most concern for his safety are Wormmon and Daisuke!
    • Yolei/Miyako Inoue is shown to like boys, most notably Ken (whom she ends up marrying in the future) and Michael. Then there is the infamous "Mimi fantasy" where it appears that she has a crush on Mimi Tachikawa.
    • Veemon seems to have a crush on Tailmon/Gatomon which comes out of nowhere, lasts for about 10 seconds and is never brought up or mentioned again. But the way he talks to and acts around Daisuke really makes it seem like he considers Daisuke something more than just a friend...
  • Digimon Universe: App Monsters: Haru has a crush on his female classmate Ai, yet he also has a lot of Ho Yay moments with his best friend Yuujin. Additionally in the Appmon Data Lab segment of Knight's first appearance, he is seen fanboying over him, complete with pink hearts on the background.
  • Dragon Ball Super:
    • Though Lord Zuno obviously prefers women, he'll answer one question for a man if they kiss his cheek.
    • Caulifla, the Saiyan from Universe 6; on the one hand, the source of Kale's rage towards Cabba, and Caulifla's response, suggests that Caulifla's interested in men. On the other hand, her Pseudo-Romantic Friendship with Kale comes off as deeper than merely being teacher and student, or boss and underling.
    • Jerez, the Destroyer Deity of Universe 2; on the one hand, she states that Goku is beautiful and is obviously attracted to him rather than being just part of her "'beautiful' = 'good'/'strong'" manner of speaking. On the other hand, she also finds Ribrianne to be absolutely beautiful too, and seems to heavily favor and fawn over her the most out of all the fighters.
    • Sanka Coo/Kakunsa of Universe 2; alongside Ribrianne and Roasie, she finds Krillin highly attractive in the manga, she is seemingly in a romantic relationship with Bikal.
  • Doctor Slump:
    • The protagonist Arale Norimaki is a pretty innocent case; she has a great liking for strong men and mentions that Obotchaman is the boy she likes the most, but she usually plays to have an appointment and even marry Gatchan (who does not have a defined gender but refer to him with feminine pronouns). She also admires the voluptuous body of some women, like her teacher Midori, has gone on a date with Hiyoko's little sister, and in an episode of the anime where she is asked who she would like to marry in the future, she mentions that she wants to marry Obotchaman, Akane, Taro, Peasuke, Tsukutsun and Tsururin, to which Akane replies that it would be ridiculous for her and Arale to get married. Arale simply replies that she would like it, and that she sees no problem with it (she simply just loves everyone and everything).
    • Sparrow, Hiyoko's younger sister, has said she likes Taro and has had a date with him, but also gladly agreed to have one with Arale.
    • Akane Kimidori hadn't expressed any interest in men until the arrival of Tsukutsun (who she ends up marrying), but according to an episode of the original anime, making a bet with her friends on her teacher's underwear is a apparently common activity for her, and in an alternate story of manga where Akane and Arale are phantom thieves, they steal Midori's panties.
    • Peasuke Soramame clearly likes girls, and is the first of his friends to have a girlfriend, but he spends a whole episode praising his favorite fighter, Masked Melon, and at one point he is delighted to see him.
  • Soushi Minashiro in Fafner in the Azure: Dead Aggressor. He has a very intense relationship with Kazuki, and the first season of the show deals extensively with the two of them struggling to understand one another. In the movie he hugs Kazuki quite intimately from behind while vowing to return to his side. However, the official relationship chart for the second season states that he may be interested in Maya.
  • Fairy Tail:
    • Lucy certainly enjoys pinups of Mirajane, and is awfully... impressed by Erza, yet she's also shown attraction to Leo, and has a decent amount of Ship Tease with both Natsu and Gray.
    • Speaking of Lucy: Levy, who was fangirling Lucy when she was introduced, but later seemed to develop a crush on Gajeel while not really dropping her flirty nature around Lucy. In the sequel series, they even have a child on the way.
    • As of the second half of the series onwards we have Cana, while she has mentioned having boyfriends in the past she's been shown flirting and groping various female members of the guild especially Lucy after the two became close. Hell her first reaction to seeing Lucy again after a year apart post the second Time Skip? To grab her boobs and ask if they've gotten any bigger.
    • Erza Scarlet has no problems getting naked in front of others, regardless of gender. One of her early acts in the series was breaking into Lucy's room and looking at her underwear. During one of the Omakes where the main characters are playing their world's equivalent of the King's Game, when one of the players gives the order for another to strip, Erza is disappointed when one of the boys strips, wishing it was a girl. And when she isn't happy with the orders from another player, she orders some of the girls to Skinship Grope each other. Another Omake shows that in group baths she enjoys forcibly scrubbing other girls and groping their breasts. The only reason she's this trope and not Ambiguously Gay is because the only person she displays any romantic interest is Jellal, a man and she acts much more chaste and embarrassed whenever he's around.
  • In the Turning Red spinoff 4★Town 4★Real, Mei's father, Jin shows shades of this based on his fanboyish interactions with Tae Young and Jesse.
  • Gankutsuou:
    • Albert has a romantic relationship with Eugenie, and it's heavily implied that they get married at the end of the series, but he also has a LOT of Ho Yay with the Count, to the point that the only reason he qualifies for this trope and not outright bisexual is because it's never confirmed that he's in love with the Count.
  • Girls Bravo: Miharu is clearly in love with Yukinari but also has an ambiguous Les Yay filled relationship with Koyomi, including groping her while both are in the bath and calling her beautiful. She also had a psychotic female admirer that she has no interest in.
  • Goblin Slayer: Priestess is pretty blatantly in love with the titular character, but other than him she shows no interest in men whatsoever. What would normally be a case of Single-Target Sexuality gets a little muddled when her thoughts also reveal admiration for the beauty of other women, though it's difficult to tell if she's actually attracted to them.
  • Haikyuu!!:
    • Yachi. She is shown to be intimidated and attracted to men multiple times, she is also shown to be intimidated by the attractiveness of the females she meets, and even seeming to have a short-termed crush on Kiyoko when she first asks her to join the volleyball club as a manager.
    • Kuroo. In the bu manga and in bonus panels, he is shown to think both men and women are hot at times, specifically shown in the bonus panel of Volume 10. He has even been shown in a piece of official art by Furudate for the bu manga as a part of a love triangle between him, Daishou and Mika, being drawn as being possibly attracted to Daishou.
  • Ippo Makunouchi of Hajime no Ippo has got a quite sweet crush on Kumi Mashiba and she more or less reciprocates, but his attitude towards his very handsome rival Ichiro Miyata is so tinted with Ho Yay that his friends don't hesitate to say he's "gay for Miyata". And there's his also very good-looking Russian friend Volg.
  • Hetalia: Axis Powers:
    • Prussia is implied to like Hungary and also likes Italy very much, going so far as to ask him on a date. He stalks and teases Austria and has Ho Yay with him and seems jealous of his relationship with Hungary.
    • Germany acts awkward around women, suggesting he has an attraction to them, but also has a Ho Yay-ridden relationship with Italy that toes the line between text and subtext.
  • His and Her Circumstances: Yukino's little sister Kano is a huge fan of heterosexual romance novels, but Episode 25 strongly implies that she may have a crush on a new girl in her class. At one point, she even has an elaborate Imagine Spot where she and the girl in question share an Almost Kiss after a Suggestive Collision.
  • I Can't Believe I Slept with You: When Chiyo wakes the next morning with no memory of having had sex with the Landlady, she states that she's only into Men. However, when bits of memory from that night come back to her, she recalls enjoying it, and she seems more than willing to kiss the Landlady later.
  • Zange in Inu × Boku SS. Zange shamelessly hits on Soushi and openly states he'd like to sleep with him... he's also peeked at Ririchiyo's panties to prove a point, and when Watanuki wound up clinging to him out of fear in one incident, Zange thought "this would be better if it were a girl".
  • JoJo's Bizarre Adventure:
  • Zagi Fenrir of Jyu-Oh-Sei. His relationship with Karim is complicated, but definitely of a romantic nature. And his attraction to Thor is so blatantly obvious that Karim gets jealous.
  • K:
    • Izumo Kusanagi has a decent amount of Ship Tease with Seri Awashima in the anime, but starting late in season 2 and into the post-series short stories, he's having some with Reisi Munakata as well. Not to mention his close relationship with both Mikoto and Totsuka...
    • Kuroh also counts, as he also blushed upon first seeing Neko naked, but then becomes extremely loyal to Shiro and dedicates his time to finding him after the first season. It doesn't help that official art often depicts them in suggestive poses/positions, including one piece where Shiro is lying on top of Kuroh and attempting to take his shirt off.
    • Misaki Yata Cannot Talk to Women, which may or may not be based on attraction. He has an all-but-canon relationship with Saruhiko Fushimi.
    • Some fans see Shiro as having some attraction to Neko (that's not purely parental), and he has tons of Ship Tease with Kuroh.
  • Kaguya-sama: Love Is War:
    • Kashiwagi is in a sexually active relationship with Tsubasa, but there have been a few points that suggest that she might have actually have a crush on her best friend Maki, like the fact that she constantly imitates her, asked to dance with her during the bonfire, and blushed when thinking about how much Kaguya resembles her. She also explicitly tells Hayasaka and Fujiwara that she finds them attractive and wouldn't mind kissing either of them (although it's possible that she just said that to keep them away from the student council room). What's less ambiguous is her having a dreamy look when Iino asks to teach her about kissing (in order to tie a cherry stem). Fujiwara even comments on it.
    • Despite her love of shipping and meddling in other people's love lives, for the most part Fujiwara has never been very interested in her own love life, she does tend to be very affectionate towards her friends male or female but that's about it. That is until Kaguya reveals she and Shirogane are dating, from the point on she acts as if Shirogane has stolen her girlfriend, even referring to their dating as NTR. During the discussion of getting her someone to date in chapter 235 it is brought up a couple times that Fujiwara just wants to date Kaguya, and that gender doesn't matter to her as much compared to other desirable attributes.
  • Kamigami no Asobi: Loki is rather possessive of Balder, whether it's romantic or not is never made clear, and he also develops feelings for Yui.
  • Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple: Upon meeting Tanimoto, Kenichi spends about as much time worrying that he'll steal Miu from him as he does just being utterly floored by his good looks.
Kenichi: Oh my god, I can see roses.
  • Kill la Kill:
    • Ryuko shows no romantic interest in boys throughout the series. She instead has a close bond with Mako and the series ends with them going on a date, though whether it's romantic or platonic is left vague especially since they meet up with Ryuko's sister and hang out with her, and Gamagoori appears to have interpreted as platonic given that he wants to give flowers to her while dressed up. Ryuko does get flustered with the antics of male Nudist Beach members however, but even then it could be framed as sheer embarrassment as opposed to the attraction. Furthermore, her groom in an Imagine Spot has blank features, though a generally male physique.
    • As mentioned, Mako. She gets a nosebleed due to Ryuko and is quite close to her, even kissing her, however it's just ambiguous enough to call it 'simply humor' or she is really in love with Ryuko. Keeping her ambiguous is that she has some Ship Tease with Gamagoori though, and the above-mentioned date scene implies he is going to confess to her, despite being in front of Mako when she asks Ryuko "out", but there's no word on her feelings for him.
    • This is the case with Ragyo Kiryuin. It's known that she had children with Soichiro. However, she also molests Satsuki and later Ryuko, as well as the implication that she had a sexual relationship with her Dragon and surrogate daughter Nui, so she has engaged in physical relationships with both sexes. What keeps it ambiguous is the fact that it is never made clear if she saw her relationship with Soichiro as anything more than a chance to create offspring to experiment on. She seems to enjoy molesting her daughters more and is never seen in another relationship with a man. She is either a Depraved Bisexual or (more likely) a Psycho Lesbian with Pragmatic Pansexuality.
  • Ayumu from Life (2002) develops a crush on a boy but also has a very strong emotional bond with her best friend Miki. Miki herself has a lover in another town but is just as close to Ayumu.
  • Life with an Ordinary Guy who Reincarnated into a Total Fantasy Knockout: Basically the cornerstone of Jinguuji and Tachibana's relationship. They're clearly attracted to each other, but since Tachibana is in the body of a girl, defining their sexuality gets a bit hazier. Tachibana identifies as male and has always been interested in women, is in a woman's body and is falling for the male Jinguuji, while Jinguuji shows no interest at all in any woman and actually much prefers the company of Tachibana, considering him his oasis, but only shows attraction to him when Tachibana is in a woman's body, so maybe Jinguuji was always attracted to Tachibana and never realized. On the other hand, it's implied that Tachinana's charms works mostly on people who are already attracted to women. And there's the fact that it's possible both are simply under the effect of a curse.
  • Little Witch Academia (2017): Akko has a good amount of Ship Tease with both Andrew and Diana. She's a very friendly person in general, but she blushes around Andrew a couple of times, and is a bit of a Cuddle Bug with Diana after they become friends (and even before then, she admits she's pretty at one point in the canon light novel). She also almost kisses Sucy in episode 10 and shows no hesitation about it, being more concerned about taking her first kiss than the idea of kissing another girl (granted, the kiss was to give Sucy the medicine needed to save her than a romantic one).
  • Konata of Lucky Star. Her room is covered in posters and figurines of moe girls, she talks about Miyuki's breasts (in a joking manner?), she is obsessed with adult dating games (but girls like those too... right?). She seems to have massive picture archives of moe girls classified into different fetishes on her computer, seeming to include pornographic images as is hinted at in one episode. She definitely admires the female form. She and Kagami seem entangled in some sort of love-hate quasi-romantic relationship. Konata, after Kagami give up her seat to her at a concert, seemingly touched remarks, "What is this feeling?" Konata seems to have only ever had female friends despite having interests which should win her plenty of male attention. On the other hand, Konata has stated outright stated that she isn't a lesbian in the manga and she enjoys working at a Cosplay Café where she claims to enjoy the attention of the male customers whom she says are "kind of like" her boyfriends. She also seems to mention wanting a boyfriend (maybe? hard to sort out the exact words she used. might've been "lover". It was more of a daydream thing anyway where she imagined herself as several Da Capo characters before being swept off her feet by a bishounen [and therefore ambiguously male] version of herself). She also commented that she doesn't really like giant robot shows for the action but just thinks the bishi characters are hot. Whether she's talking about the bishounen or bishoujo character is not clear, though, as she seems to be watching Code Geass when she makes the comment.
  • Love Hina: Kaolla Su is among those attracted to Keitaro, but she also stole Shinobu's first kiss.
  • Sheryl Nome of Macross Frontier, definitely into guys, takes a seemingly random interest in Ranka when they first meet (and stares at her QUITE a bit), and makes an off-hand remark about Nanase's voluptuousness (which Nanase then calls her out to stop staring at her with those "lecherous eyes"). She also has a habit of creating multiple holographic versions of herself on stage in the movies, which she uses to french kiss herself; the second movie takes this one step further with the holographic Other-Sheryl appearing to be a guy. And the one guy she has an interest in suffers from Dude Looks Like a Lady.
  • Mob Psycho 100: Hanazawa Teruki seems to have a crush on Mob. In his introduction he's seen on a date with a girl and his fellow gang members comment that this is a frequent occurrence. Then he meets (and gets his ass kicked by) Mob, and his entire outlook changes. He jumps at the chance to help Mob rescue Ritsu, offering his help in a most flirtatious manner, even flipping his hair and then trying to get Mob's attention and sympathy by pointing out he'd also nearly been burned alive. In the manga, he tells Mob that girls are staring because he's handsome and takes Mob clothes shopping. In the most recent manga updates, his attempts to exorcise Dimple are a way of sparing Mob's feelings and says that he will tell Mob Dimple simply moved on peacefully. After Dimple manages to brainwash Teru, he uses Teru in an attempt to manipulate Mob by referring to Teru's "true feelings" for him. A brainwashed Teru says that he will end their "relationship" if Mob doesn't lay off his attacks on the Divine Tree, refers to Mob having been the most important thing to him before his brainwashing, apologizes before hitting Mob with his power, and manages to comment through his brainwashing that Mob is "so amazing" while being blasted out of the Divine Tree.
  • Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun:
    • Yuu Kashima is a Bifauxnen who's very popular with girls for her handsome looks. She definitely enjoys flirting with girls, and is seen going on dates with them (although those are always group dates), but she never takes it any further than that. At the same time she has a lot of Ship Tease with her male upperclassman Hori, always trying to do things she thinks will make him happy and worrying whenever she thinks he doesn't like her. It is also stated in her character profile under "Type" that she thinks all girls are cute and her type concerning boys is "unknown", implying that while she has a strong inclination towards girls, she's definitely still open to the possibility of being attracted to guys.
    • Nozaki's little sister Yumeko. She's definitely very into boys, but in one chapter, Nozaki shows her a photo of Mikoshiba (his male best friend) and the above-mentioned Kashima, and asks her which one she thinks is hotter. Yumeko picks Kashima, and when Nozaki chuckles and informs her that Kashima is a girl, she simply reiterates that Kashima is the hotter one of the two. When Nozaki is visibly surprised by this, Yumeko says that gender doesn't matter when admiring hotness.
  • My Hero Academia: Eijiro Kirishima, who has a fanboy level of enthusiasm for what he deems, "manliness." Though he is shown to get flustered at Midnight's hero costume and was seen blushing at the fact there were naked girls at the hotspring. Plus, while his inspiration to become a Pro was an old hero called Crimson Riot, whom he emulates as much as possible, it's later shown that he modelled his current hairstyle and upbeat attitude off someone who greatly inspired him when he was in middleschool - Mina Ashido.
  • In My Monster Secret, Shishido Shiho, who presents herself as a "pervert", has no problem groping girls or contemplating to do it, and even has a nosebleed when fondling Nagisa's butt in chapter 89. However, she also regularly teases the main character Asahi (and possibly has a light crush on him) and briefly mentions having liked a boy in grade school. It doesn't help that her character remains rather impenetrable.
  • Naruto:
    • Sai, what with his midriff bearing top, Ho Yay with Naruto, and (fan exaggerated) tendency towards penis jokes. He also called Ino "gorgeous" once, and in the finale they are married and have a son.
    • Orochimaru preys on both boys and girls but shows a particular interest in Sasuke.
    • Naruto himself gets obvious Ho Yay with Sasuke (it is likened to an obsession and commented on by other characters) and other males as well as initially having a crush on Sakura and marrying Hinata in the finale and having kids.
    • Some of Suigetsu's mannerisms and body language could also be interpreted this way, such as the scene where he threatens Sasuke from behind while naked, though his Teeth-Clenched Teamwork with Karin can be viewed as Belligerent Sexual Tension. He tends to get suggestive when threatening other males as well.
  • Negima! Magister Negi Magi:
    • Fate Averruncus is heavily implied to have been in love with a woman in a flashback, and then later outright states that that Negi Springfield is "his." What he means by that is, in keeping with the trope, ambiguous, but the girls vying for Negi's love clearly see him as a rival.
    • Either this or a case of Early-Installment Weirdness, but Setsuna Sakurazaka has a huge crush on Konoka Konoe, her mistress, one that is reciprocated and is heavily implied to end in matrimony. Nevertheless, early on she has some minor Ship Tease with Negi and admits to feel attracted to his Bishōnen older form.
    • Asuna is into older men, but she has a number of moments with the aforementioned Setsuna that suggest Asuna likes her a bit more than just a friend. There's also her friendship with Ayaka that leads to a (probably) Platonic Declaration of Love near the end of the series.
    • Nodoka and Yue pine for Negi deeply but there are hints dropped throughout the series (especially in the former's case) that they're secretly nursing feelings for each other.
    • Konoka is very obviously attracted to Setsuna mentioned above, but how she feels about Negi (and men by extension) isn't completely clear. Her grandfather tries to set her up with male suitors but they're all much older than her, and she prefers Negi to all of them.
  • Neon Genesis Evangelion:
    • Shinji is very clearly attracted to Rei, Asuka and Misato, and these relationships form a major part of the series. Then Kaworu Nagisa shows up. He's pretty clearly interested in Shinji, but exactly how Shinji feels varies by the adaptation and is still usually open to interpretation. Complicating things is that they meet when Shinji is in a particularly vulnerable mental state, so it's possible that he's straight but just desperate for anyone who will show him affection.
    • Interestingly, Kaworu himself. Usually he comes off as having Single-Target Sexuality for Shinji, but has also been paired with Rei in some official art and spin-offs. In the original show he's intrigued by her, but seemingly only because they're both Angels in human form.
    • Kaji flirts heavily with the ladies and has sex with Misato. He also appears to be hitting on Shinji in a couple scenes, though this seems to be him just messing with people. Amusingly, one such scene has Shinji react with a deadpan "I'm a boy."
    • While Maya is explicitly a lesbian in most incarnations, in one game she can also date Aoba.
  • Tomoko Kuroki, the main character of No Matter How I Look at It, It's You Guys' Fault I'm Not Popular!, is clearly attracted to men—she's fond of otome games and sex scenes with guys, especially ones involving a Fetishized Abuser, and she saw getting a boyfriend as a goal for much of the early manga. But she also has no compunction about sexually harassing women, often blushes when close to attractive girls, and fantasizes about her classmates. In general, though, she doesn't seem to recognize her behavior as this, mostly because her social standards are warped by anime such that she interprets the Les Yay scenes in most shows as ordinary platonic interaction. It doesn't help that she Desperately Craves Affection and is fairly indiscriminate.
  • Ouran High School Host Club:
    • Haruhi states that she doesn't care about genders and blushes in the anime when she accidentally kisses Kanako, which would imply that she's open to a relationship with a girl. However, her being Oblivious to Love (at least until she realizes her own feelings for Tamaki) keeps this from being further explored.
    • Tamaki is well-established as attracted to girls, but he's also clearly attracted to Haruhi when he still thinks she's a guy. This is not a typical case of the Sweet on Polly Oliver trope because there's never any indication that Tamaki is confused or angsty over apparently being attracted to a guy, or that he perceives Haruhi as feminine.
    • Hikaru has some Ship Tease with Haruhi, and also plenty of very self-aware Homoerotic Subtext with his brother Kaoru.
    • All the members of the Host Club invoke this as part of their duties; the female guests need to feel like they have a chance to be loved by the hosts, but the hosts also know that they get more attention through Homoerotic Subtext.
  • PandoraHearts:
    • Elliot comments on liking girls with sexy underwear and gets a ton of Homoerotic Subtext with Leo, defaulting to his Tsundere personality. He also gets a fair share of subtler Homoerotic Subtext with Oz.
    • Leo states that he Likes Older Women at one point, but his most important relationship is his incredibly close and meaningful one with Elliot, not to mention how he completely loses his mind following Elliot's death. He also gets occasional minor Homoerotic Subtext with Oz and Vincent.
    • Vincent eventually falls for Ada, but he is also obsessed with his older brother Gilbert. What kind of love is up for debate (although most agree it does not seem brotherly), but it's strong enough that he's willing to erase his own existence to make Gil's life better. He also flirts with Lottie, has slept with a lot of noblewomen, and does some ambiguous Homoerotic Subtext-inducing teasing with Leo.
    • At the beginning of the series, Oz flirted with plenty of girls and seemed to have something for Sharon. However, he also generates Ho Yay with Leo, Elliot, and Break—not to mention his possessive streak regarding Gilbert, his Ambiguously Gay servant who seems to be totally in love with him. In an omake, he enthusiastically entertains having lovestruck fans of both genders and states that he is slightly attracted to a cross-dressing Break.
    • Break is implied to have been in love with Shelly Rainsworth and has had some questionably flirtatious encounters with Lottie rife with odd sexual tension. In spite of this, he also enjoys teasing and having No Sense of Personal Space in regards to Gilbert, Oz, and Reim.
  • Yuujirou of Princess Princess is shown to have an interest in girls but may or may not also have feelings for Tooru, who occasionally is shown to reciprocate.
  • Sayaka Miki of Puella Magi Madoka Magica explicitly has a crush on her childhood friend Kyosuke Kamijou. However, there is a bit of subtext pairing her with Kyoko Sakura. While in the main series proper it seems one-sided on Kyoko's part, there has been a fair amount of Ship Tease in Spin-Off material (including some confirmation that the staff ships it) that suggests at least a possibility of reciprocation. And with the release of Rebellion, the two are living in the same house, hold hands, fight together, and enjoy teasing each other.
  • Reborn! (2004):
    • Gokudera has considerable Ho Yay towards Tsuna (though it's not clear if it's really love or just Undying Loyalty). He also blushed and had a nosebleed upon seeing Lal Mirch (a beautiful woman) naked.
    • Mukuro has subtext with his followers, Tsuna, Hibari, and Chrome.
    • Doctor Shamal loves and pervs after pretty ladies, namely Bianchi, and in one of the earliest episodes, Doctor Shamal accidentally kissed Tsuna. Both of them were obviously disgusted and never mentioned it again afterwards, but still. Not only that, but it was Tsuna's First Kiss. It's also worth noting that Tsuna's one of the few exceptions to Shamal's "I don't treat men" policy and their other cases of No Sense of Personal Space around one another.
  • Revolutionary Girl Utena leans as hard into Everyone Is Bi as broadcast standards would let them at the time, being very explicit with opposite sex pairing and heavily implying same sex-ones. Utena herself is the most obvious example, showing interest in several men, but developing a less explicit but still overt interest in Anthy—which Adolescence of Utena makes into a full-blown romance.
  • In Rosario + Vampire, young Yukari announces to her classmates that she's fallen in love with both Moka and Tsukune, but it's not clear if she herself fully understands the implications of that statement.
  • Oscar from The Rose of Versailles falls into this, despite being the archetypal Bifauxnen who has a lot of female admirers. She's definitely attracted to men, since she falls in love with Fersen and later Andre, and she angrily denies being a lesbian when Jeanne claims that Marie Antoinette has a sexual relationship with her. That said, there are hints that she does like women as well, but won't act on those feelings due to French society not looking very fondly on homosexuality at the time; she tells both Rosalie and Fersen's sister Sophie that she would gladly return their feelings if she were male, but otherwise keeps gently turning down Rosalie's romantic affections for her. She also openly flirts with most of the women who attend the ball her father holds so he can set up an Arranged Marriage for her, but this is largely to get back at her father for trying to marry her off in the first place.
  • RWBY: Official Manga Anthology: Red Like Roses features Ruby/Weiss teasing, mostly on Weiss' side. One story has Ruby going on about how she wants a boyfriend. At the end of the chapter, she jokes that Weiss has a crush on her and gets real close to her. Weiss blushes and gets embarrassed at this. This might imply Weiss likes girls, on top of her Ship Tease with boys in the animation. Being an anthology, the manga might be non-canon.
  • Sailor Moon:
    • The heroine Usagi is clearly attracted to men, with her crush on Motoki and falling in love with Mamoru, but also seems to display attraction to women as well. She comments that both Ami and Makoto are pretty when she first meets them and even says Ami would be cuter if she smiled more often. Ami also manipulates Usagi into getting on a bus with her by saying she could she a pretty girl (Rei) and Usagi ended up following said girl home because she was entranced with her beauty, hearts in her eyes the entire time. She goes along with Haruka's flirting even after learning she's a woman and doesn't seem upset by being surprise-kissed by her. She also seems okay with Sailor Cosmos kissing her in the manga, though this gets muddied by the fact that Cosmos is another version of her. It's still left ambiguous whether she's bisexual or not since she doesn't outright gush about girls as often as she does about boys.
    • The rest of the Inners, too, mostly Rei and Minako. Minako, Makoto, and Rei have each fallen in love with at least one man and the first two are boy-crazy and often comment on wanting a boyfriend while Ami has a crush on Motoki. Creator Naoko Takeuchi was also planning on pairing them up with the Shitennou. However, some official art by Naoko and a chapter in the Stars arc have Les Yay between Rei and Minako, and she also drew a Les Yay-y picture of Minako feeling up Usagi. When Makoto is introducing her friend Asanuma to the other girls, she describes Usagi as pretty. The Dream and Stars arcs are overly dramatic about Usagi being the only person the Inners should be devoting their lives to and all of the girls coming to agree with this, willingly choosing to spend the rest of their (very long) lives with a woman (sure this is rooted in the Japanese concept of giri, but the manga doesn't distinguish between celibacy and lesbianism).
    • Ittou Asanuma. He may have romantic feelings for his friend Makoto and doesn't seem to mind when she kisses him on the head. On the other hand, he's a big Mamoru fanboy and his admiration can easily be interpreted as a crush, if not more. It's to the point that both the 2011 English re-translation of the manga and the English dub of Crystal have Makoto say he has a "man-crush" on Mamoru and Asanuma's response is essentially "So what if I do?"
  • Sekirei: Matsu clearly loves her Ashikabi Minato, but her reaction to having an Accidental Kiss with Musubi (another female Sekirei) implies heavily she may be bisexual. There's also Uzume, who has a female Ashikabi in Chiho, and while her relationship with Minato is clearly established as Like Brother and Sister, her constant teasing sometimes casts it into doubt.
  • Seraph of the End:
    • Ferid claims to feel love for a female vampire but she thinks he only loves her for her power. For that matter, Ferid seems to have distinctly rapey overtones whenever he is talking to/about Mika or when he is near Yuu. Further compounded by him being a vampire who are stated to not feel things like sexual attraction and he’s a teasing trickster in general.
    • Crowley acts flirtatious toward Yuu calling him "my cute little livestock", notices the attractiveness of women and men in the novels, has reluctant Ho Yay with Ferid, once manhandles Shinoa to the ground to drink her blood in a scene resembling Attempted Rape, and has occasionally been depicted with Cress and Horn in Ship Tease art in the manga.
  • Reki, one of the two protagonists of Sk8 the Infinity, has a build-up of Ship Tease throughout the series between him and his best friend, Langa, who is somewhere between near-textual or textual gay. After several episodes in which their friendship starts emotionally heightening, Reki does however express overt romantic interest in an unnamed but pretty girl on a boat, blushing heavily near her and flustering as he's about to say he skateboards, only to get rejected by her simply walking past. This provides an interesting contrast for his and Langa's first episode Meet Cute, during which Reki has subtle flustered movements and blushes at Langa while asking if he wants to try out skateboarding, only to get put off when the conversation abruptly switches to jobs, highly implying that he thought that Langa was cute in the same way. As the series goes on the romantic overtones between him and Langa increase, and in episode 10, after they finally make up from a prolonged fight, he blushes very heavily when Langa tells him a series of sincere compliments. By the end, Langa subtly expresses that Reki is his Implied Love Interest several times, and with how much they blush at each other throughout, it's a likely mutual crush, even though there's no direct implication via words from Reki's side that Langa is his Implied Love Interest.
  • Skip Beat!: Kyoko has shown attraction towards men and may or may not like her friend Moko in that way.
  • Reina from Sound! Euphonium explicitly states she has a crush on her male teacher but that does nothing for the large amount of Homoerotic Subtext between her and Kumiko. Episode 11 has a scene that reeks of a silly high school love confession where Reina asks if Kumiko will ever leave her. Kumiko states that she won't and that Reina can kill her if she does. Reina agrees and then Kumiko puts her hand on Reina's hand that was on her cheek, and repeats a line Reina told her several episodes earlier—"it's a confession of love, after all." This makes Reina very happy. All throughout the scene their faces were literally centimeters apart.
  • Kotetsu from Tiger & Bunny was officially married to a woman prior to the events of the series. He also has a lot of rather suspicious moments with Barnaby, and he tells Fire Emblem that he's "too tall" rather than saying anything about his gender when asked if he wanted to go back to the latter's house. However, the creators refuse to confirm anything on Kotetsu and Barnaby's relationship, and the comment to Nathan may have simply been a joke.
  • Tokyo Ghoul
    • Eto claims to love Kaneki to a Yandere degree but given her reputation it's difficult to tell if it's genuine. She also acts ominously seductive around Kanae who is revealed to be a girl and she strips her when torturing her, including putting her hands on her body.
    • Kaneki/Sasaki has ship tease with numerous ladies (including having a crush on Rize initially before he found out she was a ghoul and thinking that Touka is cute too as well as carrying her in a Bridal Carry). He ends up having sex with Touka and marrying her with child. He has also blushed around men and commented on the attractive qualities of them, in addition to other Ho Yay which includes carrying Hide in a Bridal Carry in the anime and their undying devotion to each other and Mutsuki in one in the manga and calling him "cute" with a wink.
    • Hide shows interest in the ladies, like Touka and Rize, but also has a relationship with Kaneki that borders on Ho Yay at times. He happily accepted Kaneki despite knowing that he's a ghoul. The anime depicts him choosing to save Kaneki and spend his final moments with him rather than seek medical attention for his injuries.
    • Tsukiyama blurs the line between murderous and amorous intentions towards Kaneki and was also mentioned to have a thing for Touka.
    • Touka gets plenty of Ship Tease with Kaneki and both are implied to be attracted to one another. They both end up confessing feelings for the other and having sex as well as getting married Also, Touka gets very blushy around her female human friend Yoriko. As a bonus, she forces herself to eat her cooking even though it's vile to her, just to spare Yoriko's feelings.
    • Uta comments that Urie's moles are "sexy", gets rather close to Kaneki/Sasaki, comments on Mutsuki's good looks and also discusses girls with Shirazu. Also, Yomo and Uta started out as rivals, with the later becoming fascinated with the former. Itori likes to tease them about their past and in one of the Seiyuu events, the Live Drama involved Uta flirting with Yomo while touching his kagune. Uta ends up confessing to Yomo that the latter makes him feel alive.
    • Mutsuki is Transgender. He seems to find Male Gaze disturbing but is rather close with Sasaki and the other members of his team, one of whom is a girl. He also seems to either express interest/curiousity towards Touka (he calls her "super cute") or is jealous of her relationship with Sasaki. He turns out to be jealous of her and is in love with Sasaki/Kaneki. Though he’s so delusional and unable to maintain a stable sense of self that it’s uncertain if those are his true feelings.
    • Naki is either this or Ambiguously Gay in that he is a masochist when it comes to his big brother Yamori who he fawns over but also gets Ship Tease moments with Miza one of which includes them doing Sweetheart Sipping in the 2016 calendar. They also get married.
    • Seidou’s strong admiration towards Amon and Akira. It’s also implied that Seidou’s one-sided rivalry with Akira (who is Amon’s partner) might be jealousy. There's also the omake where Seidou gets jealous of Suzuya when he sees him giving Amon some sweets thinking he's trying to get on Amon's good side and despairs over how he's been unable to grow closer to Amon thus far.
    • Banjou has an established crush on Rize but also has his share of Ho Yay and protectiveness towards Kaneki.
  • Minto from Tokyo Mew Mew has a hero-worship for Zakuro that definitely verges into Les Yay at times (she confesses her love at one point, though in context it's ambiguous what kind of love she was talking about), but also shows interest in guys and when Ichigo asked the other Mews what they considered attractive, she pictured a male dancer. 4Kids actually played this up in their dub by swapping that male dancer to Zakuro herself (Renee in the dub). They also changed almost none of the dialogue with her confessing her love and adoration to Zakuro/Renee.
  • Sumire from Venus Versus Virus has a very intense bond with her friend Lucia, who is later confirmed in the manga to be in love with her, but also has a very important male love interest. The manga's end is rather ambiguous whether Sumire likes Lucia back or whether it's a one-sided love affair.
  • Wandering Son:
    • Mako seems predominantly attracted to guys but has a crush on her transgender female friend Nitori at one point, though due to the latter still being living as male Mako sees her as a boy.
    • Momoko has a Pseudo-Romantic Friendship with her best friend Chizuru but has been teased for liking a former male classmate Oka.
    • Saori has a thing for crossdressing guys and has a Single-Target Sexuality towards trans girl Nitori, who she prefers as a boy but doesn't mind too much as a girl. Saori also has a romantically tinged friendship with Takatsuki (who has an Ambiguous Gender Identity). She later begins dating a boy named Fumiya.
    • Nitori is mainly attracted to girls but she might have had a crush on her sister's eventual-boyfriend Seya (who had a crush on her and went on a date with her prior to an Unsettling Gender-Reveal). She also had a crush on Takatsuki in elementary. At the time Takatsuki identified as a trans boy, but by the end of the series she no longer did.
    • Takatsuki blushes and freaks out when Yuki playfully hits on her (though it was likely because Takatsuki had never passed as a boy until then) and also has a lot of teasing with Saori to the point where they're mistaken for a couple once. Later in the manga she has ambiguous feelings towards a male teacher that not even she understands. Near the end of the series Takatsuki admits she likes Nitori, who she hasn't seen for a long time. Takatsuki previously saw Nitori as a girl but finds the near-adult Nitori to be handsome.
  • Welcome Back, Alice: Protagonist Yo has feelings for and lusts after both his childhood friends: the female Mitani and the (formerly) male Kei. Still, his initial sexual acts with Kei are questionably consensual and Kei points out they have "borrowed" their feminine/androgynous appearance in part to appeal to Yo.
  • Marnie from When Marnie Was There has a Pseudo-Romantic Friendship with Anna that consists of romantic seeming things such as love confessions, rowboating together, and Intimate Healing. She also has feelings for a boy named Kazuhiko. It's later revealed that Marnie is Dead All Along and Kazuhiko was her eventual husband. Anna ends up self-inserting as Kazuhiko in flashbacks which makes her relationship with Marnie even more romantic looking. The reveal that Marnie is a Long-Lost Relative of Anna's (namely her grandmother as a child) makes it hard to understand if Marnie sees Anna as family or as a love interest, especially since it's left vague if Marnie realizes their relationship.
  • Your Name: Taki's friend Tsukasa quietly mutters he finds Taki cute after seeing Mitsuha's behavior in Taki's body.
  • Ai from Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS occasionally acts flirty towards Yusaku, even blowing him a kiss once, and has some Homoerotic Subtext with Roboppi involving them doing something rather suggestive-sounding together under Yusaku's bed. On the other hand, he also tries to make it appear that Aqua is in love with him when first telling Yusaku about her and at one point refers to Aoi as a "cutie". However, his joking nature makes it unclear how serious he is about any of this.
