Canon: Human girl who hangs out with aliens.
Fanfic: One of the aliens.

Adaptation Species Change in Fan Works.

By fandom

Amphibia
  • Justified in Medicated. Anne, Sasha and Marcy are originally humans, like in the show, but they have spent their entire lives as a frog, a toad and a newt.

Animorphs

Crossovers

  • Authors Note: In the original franchise, Sonic was a hedgehog and Knuckles was an echidna. Here, Sonic is a dildo (though he doesn't do anything sexual) and Knuckles is a rock with googly eyes attached to it.
  • In BTTX and its sequel, Doc Brown and Marty McFly (Back to the Future) realise that they are mutants (X-Men Film Series); Doc can manipulate electricity and Marty can stop time (naturally Doc's sons are also mutants).
  • Blood Sisters opens with the Cullens realising that Bella Swan is fae rather than human.
  • Blood Meridian with extra sprinkles: The Man was a human in the original novel. Here, he is a Pokémon, a hedgehog, and a Saiyan.
  • In Boston Bound Fae, a crossover with Lost Girl and Rizzoli & Isles, characters like Jane Rizzoli, Barry Frost and Charles Hoyt are all 'reinvented' as Fae; Jane is a wolf-shifter, Frost is a siren, and Hoyt is a Torak (a Fae who feeds on fear the blood of their victims).
  • In "Falling Hope, Rising Threat", the sequel to A Man Like No Other, Octavia Blake is revealed to be half-Frost Giant through her biological father, Loki.
  • In A Grimm Possibility (a Kim Possible/Grimm crossover) and its sequels, not only are Kim and Anne now Grimms, but many of Kim’s friends and enemies are different kinds of Wesen, including;
    • Bonnie Rockwaller is a Ziegavolk who flees school after Kim identifies her.
    • Ron is an eagle-esque Wesen (identified as a Mannschaft Falken, a species that didn't appear in the original show), who becomes Kim's boyfriend.
    • Tara is an Eisbiber whose parents run a hardware store.
    • Monique is a Luisant-Pêcheur who is rescued from her abusive adopted Skalengeck parents by Kim and Anne.
    • Shego is a Dämonfeuer pursuing her own vendetta.
    • Adrenna Lynn is a Ende der Zieten Grimm who tries to capture and brainwash Kim to join her.
  • The H-Files is a Crossover with The X-Files where Mulder and Scully are ponies.
  • Inky Future is a crossover between Mega Man X and Splatoon taking place in the setting of the latter in a timeline where X is discovered 12,000 years late, long after humanity has gone extinct. As a result, almost every MegaMan character from after the Classic time period (aside from X and Zero or characters from alternative time periods) is either an Inkling, an Octoling or some other non-robotic species, as reploids were never created by Dr. Cain and robotics is largely a niche field of study in the Splatoon setting. Professor Gaudile in particular becomes an actual platypus.
  • JoJo New Universe:
  • The Lost Kingdom reveals that Morgana's mother Vivienne was originally a fae oracle who was stripped of her powers and advantages as a fae after she fell in love with Gorlois. When the Blood King tests a sample of Morgana's blood, he is surprised to discover that Morgana is manifesting fae traits, despite how most human/fae offspring only produce humans with no fae powers; he speculates that this is a side-effect of his spell on Vivienne only stripping her of her advantages as a fae rather than actually turning her into a human.
  • The Marvelous World Of DC
    • Brainiac is a Kryptonian supercomputer, instead of a Coluan android, just like in the DCAU and Smallville.
    • Kent Nelson, Steven Strange, and June Moone were born magic, instead of gaining it later in life.
    • Hela is half-Olympian, half-Asgardian, because she's the daughter of Hades, not Loki. The same goes for her brother Pluto.
    • Static and Garfield Logan are both mutants, instead of metahumans, due to being the nephews of Storm and Beast, respectively.
  • Madoka in Mœbius is revealed to have Quincy ancestry from the Bleach half of the crossover, making her, her brother, and one of her parents not quite regular humans as they were in Madoka's home series.
  • In the Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Supernatural crossover "Paschendale", more standard monsters like vampires and werewolves are basically a subtle mix of the mythology of both shows, such as vampires being vulnerable to stakes and Oz still able to lock himself away when he transforms. However, Whistler and Anya are changed from being demons to angels; Whistler is an angelic watcher known originally as Sariel, and Anya is Naamah, an angel of physical love who has become warped after seeing love turn to physical violence on so many occasions (Castiel undoes her wish by removing her grace).
  • The Pokémon: The Series/Beast Wars crossover Pokémon Wars: Transformers has the Maximals and Predacons land on the Pokémon World rather than Prehistoric Earth and thus use Pokémon as their disguise forms instead (which also results in most of them using new aliases);
    • Optimus Primal is a Blastoise.
    • Megatron is a Feraligatr.
    • Cheetor becomes a Houndoom and is renamed Blaze-Hound.
    • Rhinox becomes an Aggron and is renamed Aggronix.
    • Rattrap becomes a Raichu and is renamed Shockrat.
    • Dinobot becomes a Charizard and is renamed Chari-Tron.
    • Waspinator becomes a Beedrill and is renamed Bee-Driller.
    • Terrorsaur becomes an Aerodactyl and is renamed Aerosaur.
    • Tarantulus becomes an Ariados and is renamed Ariadox.
    • Scorponock becomes a Scizor and is renamed Scizornex.
  • The renegade hero!!!....Invader Zim?: Characters like Duncan and Sheen are human in their home canons, but are reinterpreted as Human Aliens here in order for them to be Galactic Guardian cadets (as canonically, Betty and Noah are the only human members).
  • Rise of a Star Knight (The Hobbit,RWBY):
    • Goblins are an offshoot species of faunus who stayed hidden in the mountains and remained isolated from the rest of their species for so long they evolved into something else.
    • Thorin and his party are replaced by Jaune and his party of humans and faunus, with the dwarven civilization as a whole replaced by the Valkyrie clan (as in, Nora Valkyrie's massive extended family, who are master miners, stoneworkers, and resident people who delve to greedily and too deep)
    • Elves are replaced by humans and faunus, depending on the group.
    • Uruk-hai, trolls, Smaug, and other such things are Grimm, though Smaug Was Once a Man, the Mad King of Vale Felix(yes, that Felix).
  • In as much as machines can have a species, in the Transformers/Star Wars crossover "Sparks Among the Stars", exposure to the Allspark changes R2-D2, the Millennium Falcon and the Death Star into Transformers, granting the vehicles full sentience.
  • Spinel's New Best Friend: King Sombra is changed in this fanfic from an Equestrian to a gem experiment who was created by Yellow Diamond and sent to Planet Equis to colonize it.
  • Massive Multiplayer Crossover With Pearl and Ruby Glowing takes place in a modern setting, so several non-humans become humans, fantastical pets become real animals (such as Stitch, an alien that pretends to be a dog, becoming an actual dog), and some animals that aren't convenient for a city are changed to smaller animals (Waddles the pig becoming a guinea pig). Averted in cases of Rule of Funny: Sven is still a reindeer, and ends up trapped in Kristoff's apartment after some Alcohol-Induced Idiocy.
  • The Hater Good: Humans are said to be almost non-existent in the universe, so Sanjay is changed to a dragon and Fanboy and Chum Chum are a hedgehog and raccoon respectively.

Dream SMP

  • Between Dreams and Memories Universe:
    • In Season 1, Niki had a pet fox named Fungi. In this continuity, Fungi is a horse instead, likely as part of the setting adaptation to make the worldbuilding more realistic.
    • In Season 2 and onward, Ghostbur had a sheep companion named Friend. In this continuity, Friend is actually a manifestation of Schlatt's Spirit (kind of like a soul).
    • Lazar is a human and not an anthropomorphic gingerbread man, as in canon.
    • In canon, Slimecicle is an actual slime, but in this continuity, he's a slime Hybrid, who have their own characterization ramifications in the continuity's worldbuilding.

Gargoyles

  • "Guardian of the People", Elisa is a gargoyle from the beginning; the first chapter explores how she was taken in by her 'grandfather' as an egg after most of her gargoyle clan were killed or died of old age, and was essentially raised by the Mazas as a sibling to Derek and Beth after Peter moved to New York due to her slow growth rate.
  • An Alternate Life” depicts a world where the Manhattan Clan and Demona are all human and Elisa is the last gargoyle survivor of Wyvern.

Lucifer (2016)

  • In "The Devil and His Urchin", Trixie is Lucifer's daughter rather than Dan's, as Lucifer and Chloe had a one-night-stand during a rocky period in Chloe and Dan's relationship. While Lucifer "recognises" Trixie as half-celestial when he meets her even before realising he's her father, she initially displays no obvious powers, but is later revealed to be able to sense celestial energy (allowing her to realise that Lucifer and Maze aren't human even if she doesn't know what they are instead), and later grows wings that match Lucifer's.

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic:

  • Alicorn reveals that Rainbow Dash, a pegasus born of pegasus parents in the show, is actually an alicorn born of an alicorn mother and earth pony father. Alicorns are born with only wings, growing their horns in the first few months of life, but since Rainbow is only a quarter, her horn came in much later in life, when she's 17.
  • In Delusions, Celestia and Luna were born as mules before they ascended to alicornhood. In canon, there's nothing to suggest that they weren't always full-blooded ponies.
  • A Diplomatic Visit: In canon, Queen Novo was a hippogriff who changed into a seapony. In this universe, she was always a seapony. The same holds true for her daughter Princess Skystar, her sister Ocean Flow, and her niece and nephew Silverstream and Terramar. Subverted with the siblings' father Sky Beak, whom Spike initially assumes was also a seapony originally, before he corrects him and explains he was born a hippogriff and changed into a seapony with the Pearl of Transformation.
  • The premise of Heart of the Forest is that almost every major character is a different species. Applejack is a deer, Fluttershy is a draconequus, Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash are griffons, Rarity is a river serpent, and Twilight is a dragon (all instead of ponies); Spike is a pony (instead of a dragon); and Discord is a hinny (instead of a draconequus).
  • The Long Game: Hydia, who was originally a human(ish) witch in My Little Pony: The Movie (1986) and My Little Pony 'n Friends, is recast as a lamia.
  • In the My Little Pony: Equestria Girls films, Spike is a dog in the human world and is the human Twilight's loyal pet. In Yugioh EQG Spike is human like the rest of the characters and is Twilight's adopted little brother.
  • Friendship Is Monsters: Many of the characters are very different species:
    • Each of the Rainbooms were all humans who eventually gained Equestrian magic, except for Sunset was a unicorn that became a human. Aside from Twilight, all of them and their families are a very different species.
      • Sunset was a born human who became a vampire.
      • Applejack comes from a species of sentient humanoid plants, called Tymber Dryad
      • Pinkie Pie is a werewolf.
      • Rainbow Dash is a harpy.
      • Rarity is a unicorn satyr.
      • Fluttershy is a Grand Fairy.
    • Both Luna and Celestia are vampires.

Pitch Perfect

  • In "Futuristic Lover", Becca is an alien known as a Saluvian who has assumed human form.

RWBY

  • Fixing RWBY: Whereas canon makes the Faunus out to be a single species of humanoids with differing animal species' traits, the rewrite's worldbuilding states that Faunus with different animals' traits are all different subspecies from each-other, and Faunus-on-Faunus racism has occurred between these different Faunus races in the past.
  • The Unseen Hunt: Ozpin is a complete muggle instead of an immortal, body-jumping wizard from a previous version of humanity, Velvet is a human instead of a Faunus, and Blake, Adam, Ruby and Cinder are all intelligent Creatures of Grimm instead of Faunus, a human Silver-Eyed Warrior, and a human Maiden respectively.
  • Vale's Underground takes place in a real-world setting. So various Faunus characters in canon who appear in the story can be assumed to be just plain humans.

Sengoku Basara:

Uncategorized/Other

  • A New Problem:
    • Roba is a pure robot instead of a human/robot.
    • Alfe is simply an anthropomorphic dog/anteater, no longer part human.
  • An Odd Little Family: While Luz and Camilla were fully-human in canon, Camilla has witch ancestry that results in a limited pool of magic developing after spending long enough time in the Boiling Isles, while Luz is Eda's half-witch daughter.
  • Becoming more than what I am.: In Life Is Strange, Max is just a normal, everyday human who suddenly manifests unexplained Time Master powers. In this story, Max is an angel whose natural divine ability is the Time Rewind Mechanic, similar to Amenadiel's slow-time powers and Lucifer's Compelling Voice.
  • Becoming the Mask (Trollhunters): James Lake Jr. is not the protagonist of the story. Instead, the story is centered around Jim, the changeling that replaced the actual James Lake Jr. and has lived his life in his place since infancy, and it is this very changeling that looks after Barbara, has made friends with Toby and is chosen by the Amulet to become the Trollhunter.
  • The Bridge has numerous ones, mostly on the "Amalgam'verse" world the kaiju hail from.
    • The Godzillas' note  vaguely defined base species, the "Godzillasaurus" is either a Tyrannosaurid or not a dinosaur at all, but a non-mammalian Synapsid depending on which Toho source is used. Here the Godzillasaurus is explicitly identified as a type of Ceratosaurid.
    • Baragon, Anguirus, Yonggary, Rodan, Varan, and Raiga have all gone from unidentified dinosaurs to chimeras created through ancient science and mysticism altering a base template. In particular Baragon's template was instead a Dicynodont therapsid and Varan is mentioned to have her genome modified from a monitor lizard. Yonggary has also gone from a theropod to a prosauropod and Raiga is now a modified Godzillasaurus.
    • Mothra Lea is referred to as a mothra, however she is actually a hybrid of a mothra and battra.
    • In the retelling of Dinosapien, Equestria Girls: Dinosapien, the dinosaur species were shuffled. In the TV show the protagonist dinosaur, Eno, was a descendant of Dromaeosaurus; and the two antagonist dinosaurs, the "Diggers" are pachycephalosaurs. Here the "Diggers" replacements are dromaeosaurids descended from Dakotaraptor; and Eno's species is something else, heavily implied to be a troodontid. Eno is now sporting a full coat of feathers, whereas before he only had them on his head and tail.
    • King Kong is identified not as a gorilla or descendant of Gigantopithecus, but a Hominin descendant of Ardipithecus, meaning he is actually a close relative of humans.
    • Monster X is no longer a single specimen entity but the results of an Xillian volunteer splicing himself with Grand King Ghidorah's genes and essence.
    • The Sirens are no longer a unique species but the results of very nonconsensual crossing of three Windigos forcing themselves on two mermares; meaning they are hybrids.
    • On the Jurassic Park and Carnosaur side stories, the Velociraptors are changed to be Deinonychus and the Spinosaurus has gone from a vaguely defined genetic experiment to a deliberate hybrid creation built off a real Spinosaurus template, much like the Indominus rex was.
  • By the Sea: The premise of the series is that Cody, plus a handful of Clone Troopers, the Togruta, Asajj Ventress, and Count Dooku are all merfolk in this story. In a somewhat obscure reference, Boga, the varactyl mount that Obi-Wan had in Revenge of the Sith during the Battle of Utapau at the end of the Clone Wars, shows up here as a stray dog.
  • Child Born of Love: Many characters received changes due to the fanfic being written and concluded before the finale of the canon manga.
    • Death the Kid was a full shinigami created from an aspect of Shinigami-Sama's soul in-canon. Here, he is a Half-Human Hybrid.
    • In-canon, Chrona is the androgynous non-witch child of Medusa (implied to have been created artificially). Here Chrona is female and a demi-witch (a rare and dangerous breed of witch that is usually exterminated at a young age) and eventually revealed to be the fabled "Witch of Destruction".
    • In-canon, Noah is revealed to be an Artificial Human spawned from the Book of Eibon as a conduit to spread the Madness of Knowledge. Here, he is a warlock and former mister-partner of Kid's mother Maria.
  • Citadel of the Heart:
    • DinoSquad RX has gone through two iterations, both being fanfics named after and based upon the series Dino Squad. Victor, known in the canon series as "Victor Veloci", no longer has the morph of a Velociraptor in this fic, and his Big Good counterpart Ms. Moynihan, who was also a Velociraptor in canon, has a different morph as well. Both of them, however, are of an unrelated species. Ms. Moynihan becomes an Acheroraptor in this fic, as her having originated from the end of the Cretaceous is still a part of her origin, and having the morph of a species still alive immediately beforehand but still close enough in attributes to Velociraptor was required. She even has feathers. Victor, meanwhile, has a completely man-made species modeled after the Raptor Attack stereotype to turn himself into a weaponized animal built for extensive agility and combat, and having none of the restrictions in agility that a real-life non-avian dinosaur would have, and also lacking feathering.
    • Out of the main five protagonists from the show, the only character to be completely intact in both iterations is Max, due to his Tyrannosaurus rex form being too ideal to replace with anything else, and so the author can indulge in his personal Author Appeal of how he'd go about depicting a Tyrannosaurus rex in fiction. That said, Roger, Fiona, Caruso, and Buzz were to be changed from Styracosaurus to Triceratops, Spinosaurus to Edmontosaurus, Stegosaurus to Ankylosaurus, and Pteranodon to Quetzalcoatlus. In the finalized draft, Roger becomes a fictional species as a direct reference to the Triceratops styrax of ARK: Survival Evolved, Fiona and Caruso are kept as they were albeit with Fiona being based on modern Spinosaurus reconstructions, and the attempt to change Buzz to Quetzalcoatlus actually sticks but at the trade off of using the smaller, Hell Creek native species as opposed to Q. northropi.
    • Terri, Fiona's younger sister in the original show, never gained the ability to morph into a dinosaur and didn't appear until later on in only a handful of episodes. Terri is not only promoted to a main lead, but also gets a dinosaur morph of her own in the form of Anzu.
  • The Dark Lady:
    • Downplayed. Gideon is still human, but because he was conceived and born in the Enchanted Forest while Rumpel's curse was still in full-effect, Gideon was born with the same scaly-skin, as well as an affinity for magic.
    • Robin II's name is brought up as being nothing but a coincidence, instead of being named after Robin Hood. This is because Robin Hood is not her father, with mentioning that she is a Demi-god, implying her father to be Hades.
  • Date A Re:Live: In the source material, Tohka Yatogami was born a Pure Spirit as revealed in Volume 18, in this fanfic, she was born a human prior to becoming one of the Sephira Spirits.
  • Deep Dish Nine is a series of Alternate Universe Fic's of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and occasionally other Star Trek series that, among other things, turns all the non-humans into humans. Oddly enough, they still have names like "Nog" and "Odo".
  • Disney High School: All of the main characters are humans, even if they were mermaids, gods, video game human characters or Toons (human ones or of other species) in their respective movies. The creator has noted that she won't be trying to humanize outright animal characters, however; perhaps the most radical change so far is Kristoff's family, who still look pretty trollish.
  • Dragon Ball Z Abridged: Thanks to Ascended Fanon, Mr. Popo is changed from a genie into a Majin, specifically, the future form of Dumplin, the lead of TFS's Dragon Ball Xenoverse Let's Play.
  • In EQuestria Girls Marvel Universe the Spike in the human world is revealed to be a human instead of a dog like in canon. When Flash Sentry and the Rainbooms discover that Spike isn't a dog like the Equestrian Spike becomes they are all surprised. Also, it is later revealed Spike is actually a mutant.
  • Evangelion 303 turns Rei and Kaworu into humans. In the original show, they were Angels.
    • It's actually not uncommon at all for Evangelion fanfics to do this. It helps that the show itself did it during the Imagine Spot in the final episode.
  • Eyes on Me is just one of many, many Steven Universe fanfics that changes the Gems into humans.
  • The Touhou Project fancomic Four Seasons House, which is a High School AU, changes the entire cast into mundane human beings with none of their abilities from the games (the sole exception is Reimu, who's still a Miko and has abilities related to that like seeing spirits. Characters who were part animal originally like Reisen wear Animal Eared Headbands in order to retain their familiar appearances.
  • Arguably applies in Frozen Turtles in Space, when Sven is transformed by mutagen from a standard reindeer into a humanoid mutant, allowing him to speak and giving him enhanced strength.
  • Harbinger (Finmonster) (Danny Phantom, ParaNorman): Ember McLain is changed from a ghost (aka a deceased human) to a banshee, which in this universe is a person chosen as an agent of the Fates.
  • In, Harry Is a Dragon, and That's OK, Harry Potter is, well, a dragon.
  • In the Darker and Edgier Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew! fic The Harmony Trap, the counterpart of Rubber Duck (and sometimes Fastback) is an eagle, and the counterpart of Little Cheese is an armadillo. Since they're both shapeshifters, they can take the appearances people expect from the comics, but those are their true forms.
  • In Hybrid Theory, where he appeared before it was revealed in the source manga, The Major from Hellsing is a vampire, rather than a cyborg.
  • Ill Met by Moonlight: In the canon show, characters are either Gems, Humans or a hybrid of the two in the case of Steven. Here, they are either human or a different type of supernatural monster.
  • The Infinite Loops: Variant loops often have loopers change species, even if there normally aren't multiple species in their loop. In particular, loopers going to the Equestria Loop and vice versa almost always change species (and it's weirder when they don't).
    • Speaking of Equestria, in The MLP Loops Silver Spoon ends up going through a lot more of these than normal, to the point that it's surprising when she's an ordinary earth-pony. Twilight assumes Silver's species tag got knocked off in the Crash, but it's too low-priority to be fixed quickly.
    • Similarly, Sunset Shimmer (another Looper Awakened by the Crash) discovers that according to the Loops she is now officially a human who gets turned into a pony upon visiting Equestria.
  • Heero Yuy in The Pirate's Soldier goes from a being an extensively trained, Made of Iron, but otherwise normal human to being of Juraian descent, which is the in-story explanation as to why he survived so many ordeals that legitimately should have killed him. This is largely due him to being a Composite Character with Tenchi, as it's eventually revealed that Yosho/Katsuhito Masaki is his maternal grandfather.
  • In The Geeky Zoologist's reimagining of Jurassic World, Owen Grady's raptors are achillobators while they are velociraptors in the film.
  • In "Complications", Torchwood Three realise that Martha’s exposure to the Mayflies has triggered dormant Time Lord genes in her system, passed on by the Doctor when he gave her immune system a boost after their trip to New Earth and preserved by her exposure to Lazarus’s machine, with the result that she is transforming into a Time Lord on a genetic level. By the time the Doctor is called in, Martha’s body temperature has lowered, her neural density has doubled, and there is a growth in her chest that is clearly intended to become her second heart. Despite Martha’s fear at what’s happening to her, the Doctor explains that he can’t stop or undo the transformation as her mutating physiology would react badly to any attempt to change it back, and even after the transformation completes it won’t be properly stable unless Martha regenerates (and the Doctor can’t even be sure she’d be able to do that), at which point she obviously wouldn’t be able to return to herself anyway.
  • Heroes in the Shadows: The turtles are instead Yoshi and Tang Shen's human children.
  • HSETAU:
    • The characters of Problem Sleuth were just normal humans in canon. Here, they're carapaces.
    • The trolls are normal humans living on Earth.
  • Last Child of Krypton turns Shinji Ikari into a Kryptonian. Asuka also becomes one via bio-engineering in the story's second version.
  • The Last Daughter, and its rewrite The Girl of Tomorrow, turn Taylor from Worm into the titular last daughter of Krypton.
  • In Hans Von Hozel's Little Red Riding Hood fic, the Wolf is replaced by a bear.
  • Leglos haz da ring (sic): Legolas is a vampire, even though, canonically, he's an elf.
  • The Many Dates of Danny Fenton: Katie Kaboom's transformations were never given an explanation in Animaniacs, only meant to be a joke on No Periods, Period. Here, it's suggested she's a mutant, like the X-Men.
  • In Master, Pokémon?, Ash and Delia are a Zorua and Zoroark, respectively, instead of humans.
  • Mike's New Ghostly Family: The Nightmare animatronics, instead of being hallucinations, nightmarish dream manifestations, or robots designed for murder (depending on what theory you believe), are demons from Hell who simply take forms of monstrous versions of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza animatronics for their own amusement.
  • The infamous Harry Potter fanfiction My Immortal turns Draco Malfoy, a human, into a vampire and Sybil Trelawney, another human, into a vampire-human hybrid.
  • In My Huntsman Academia, humans with Mutant Quirks like Tsuyu and Mina are retooled into Faunus.
  • MCU Rewrites: In this rewrite of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Wanda and Pietro Maximoff, who in the film were humans who got their powers through HYDRA's experiments, were changed into mutants who got their powers enhanced by HYDRA's experiments as well as their father being implied to be X-Men villain, Magneto, which is confirmed in New Avengers.
  • TheNamelessDoll's fan-video Wings turns Jack Frost into a fairy so that he can be shipped with Periwinkle.
  • In Wings Of The Fallen Tintin and Rastapopoulos go from being normal humans to an angel and a demon respectively.
  • In Neither a Bird nor a Plane, it's Deku!, Izuku Midoriya is a Kryptonian instead of a Quirkless human, with both the Superpower Lottery and the angst that comes with being the Last Son of Krypton.
  • Nobledark Imperium:
    • The Squats, in canon (back when they were canon) were their own separate race of abhuman, similar to the Ogryns or the Ratlings. Here, it's made clear that the Squats only have their short stature and physical traits because they were raised on their homeworlds, and that children born of Squat parents in more human-normal environments are basically indistinguishable from baseline humanity.
    • In canon, the Emperor is a Humanoid Abomination bordering on Eldritch of unknown origin. Here, the Emperor/Steward/Oscar is a "Man of Gold", basically an Artificial Human created by the Great and Bountiful Human Domain (the Precursors of the Imperium who ruled the galaxy during the Dark Age of Technology and the Age of Strife) and who is also the closest thing that humanity's ever created to a Warp God.
  • Our Own League universe:
    • Lex Luthor's Girl Friday/Bodyguard, Mercy Graves, is either a well-trained human or an Amazon in canon DC works. In Teen Titans: Together for Tomorrow, she is a Robot Girl designed to live up to Lex's idea of his "perfect" woman.
    • Similar to the direction taken in Justice League Unlimited, Hawkman and Hawkgirl's original lives, Khufu and Chay-ara, were Thanagarian Ancient Astronauts rather than Ancient Egyptian nobility.
  • In Pokémon Reset Bloodlines, as a result of the creation of a new timeline, many characters, including Ash, became bloodliners, essentially humans with Pokémon-related abilities.
  • In The Prodigal Grandson, James Bond is reinvented as a former Time Lord assassin, Yamesbohbnd, who accepted exile to Earth after he accidentally killed the wrong world leader on a mission for the Celestial Intervention Agency; each actor change is the result of Bond regenerating.
    • James Bond being a Time Lord is actually a fairly popular trope among James Bond / Doctor Who crossovers.
  • In The Queen's Consort, with the exception of Flynn and Maleficent (who was already a fairy) all of the characters are portrayed as nature-based fairies.
  • In Remnants, Faunus are a Human Subspecies that mutated generations ago, rather than a separate humanoid species.
  • Penny is human in Ruby and Nora.
  • Re: My Hostage, Not Yours: In the original version of the story, the Valkians were Lizard Folk. Here, they're now presented as Bee People.
  • In the Scootertrix the Abridged series, Rarity was changed from being a normal unicorn, to a changeling that defected from her species.
  • So far in Sixes and Sevens, both examples have gone hand-in-hand with Adaptational Super Power Change.
    • Aldo Malvagio in the comics had Super-Toughness akin to Captain America (after being fused with two other men), but started as a normal human. Here he is changed to a werewolf.
    • Roger Aubrey also had similar powers to Cap in the comics. The fic gives him diamond-hard skin, and he can also harden his fingertips into razor-sharp claws thanks to his Inhuman lineage.
  • In the original Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Princess Elise and her father are humans. In Sonic the Hedgehog: Heroes of Mobius, they're Mobian jaguars.
  • In Steven Universe: and the Hunters of Arcadia, Jamie is revealed to be a changeling spy sent by the Janus Order to gather intel on all of the magical weirdness in Beach City.
  • Several characters in Super RWBY Sisters have become Faunus. Examples include:
    • From Akame ga Kill!: Leone is a lion Faunus, Seryu is a dog Faunus and Numa is a manta ray Faunus.
    • From Spy X Family: Anya is an owl Faunus.
  • In the original series, Asuka is fully human. In Superwomen of Eva 2: Lone Heir of Krypton she's half-Kryptonian.
  • In The Eye of the Storm, it's revealed that Sadie's father is actually a Gem, making Sadie a Half-Human Hybrid instead of a full human.
  • Ultimate Spider-Woman does this to Spider-Man villain the Chameleon, who is turned from a human (who, depending on how he's written, is either a Master of Disguise or a mutated human with Shapeshifting powers) into a mutant, and the brother of X-Men villain Mystique.
  • In Who is Hoshi Sato?, Hoshi Sato from Star Trek: Enterprise is changed from a normal human (albeit a genius) to a strange half-human, half-... some type of crazy humanoid who can turn into a wolf at will and has heightened senses.
  • You and Me (and Everyone in Between) changes Penny from a robot to a human.
  • In the Bizarro World of Zelda and the Manacle of Cahla, Link's horse Epona is Prince Link's nanny and Parental Substitute Eppie.
  • In canon RWBY, Ruby Rose is a human. In Silver-Eyed Destiny, she and her mother Summer are fox faunus instead.
  • Yin-Yang:
    • As revealed with both Mara and Adora, the First Ones in the show were humanoid to the point where it's almost impossible to tell the difference between them and normal humans at a glance. In this fic, the First Ones, aka the Hok, are an almost angelic species, being winged humanoids.
    • While Veena's species in the show was unknown, she was implied to be native to Eternia. Here, she's a member of the Hok.
    • In the show, Adora was purely a First One. In this fic, she's an Eternian who descends from the First Ones. Same for Mara as well.
  • Defenders of the Universe:
    • Keith is a pure Galra in this story rather than a Half-Human Hybrid like he was in canon.
    • Lance goes from a human to an Altean here.
    • Hunk, rather than a human, is a Balmeran.
    • Pumpkin is an alien species called a "veggitoid" instead of being a sentient pumpkin.
  • Scoob and Shag: In canon, Inspector Gadget is implied to be a Cyborg, possessing both mechanical parts and human biological needs. In the comic, he's explicitly shown to be a fully mechanical robot.
  • In the classic continuity of the Devil May Cry series, Nero is an Uneven Hybrid of demon and human, being 1/4th the former and 3/4ths the latter. In The Silver Raven, due to being Lilith's son, he's half witch, one quarter human, and one quarter demon.
  • BlazBlue Alternative: Remnant:
    • In RWBY, Penny was a robot capable of generating Aura. In this story, she's revealed to be a Murakumo unit, making her an Artificial Human.
    • Jubei, due to Faunus and Beastkin being composited, is much more humanoid with his animal attribute being his tail rather than being an anthropomorphic cat person.
  • Underneath the Sakura Tree:
    • While Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo were mutant turtles in canon, here they are very much human.
    • Downplayed with Hamato Yoshi. Unlike his canon counterpart, Splinter remains human.
  • In Witches Among Humans, Luz is a witch, King is a cat and everyone else is human.
  • In canon, there's no indication that the late Mrs. Tendo was anything other than human. In Those Obnoxious Relatives, she was an alien (to be exact, the other aunt of Lum).
  • While in The Owl House Luz was all human, in Luz Belos: Princess of the Boiling Isles she is half-human, half-witch.
  • The Transformers fanfic series you want the world/well what's it worth? is set in a world in which the majority of the bots are (female) humans involved in the American political scene.
    • In fact, there are countless fics where the Cybertronians are portrayed as humans. The TF Equestrian AU series is another example, although it also makes several of the characters horses.
  • The Wizard and the Huntress: With the premise that Wizards and Witches are distinct from humans, this is the case with Barbara (who's a witch) and Jim (who's a halfling).
  • In Havfruen Og Bein, the Cybertronians are merpeople.
  • In Homecoming: Morenatsu Revisited, all the humans from the original Morenatsu are changed into beastmen. This includes the game's protagonist, Hiroyuki, who is now changed into an arctic fox.
  • The Twilight Man: A major reveal is that Mary Joestar is half-human, half Nightman (Pillar Man) rather than pure human like in Phantom Blood. This makes her son Jonathan Joestar and his descendants uneven hybrids with Nightman heritage rather than pure humans.
  • In the Miraculous Ladybug / My Hero Academia Fusion Fic You Can Become A Hero, the Kwamis are all humans, albeit humans with Quirks and Pro-Heroes.
  • The premise of There's More Magic Out There is that Marinette and Adrien's classmates are secretly monsters or magic users rather than normal humans.
    • Juleka Couffaine is a vampire.
    • Alya Cesarie is a fox selkie. Her sister Nora is a bear selkie, and their mother Marlene is a selkie whose skin was stolen.
    • Sabrina Raincomprix is a fae changeling who was swapped with the human Sabrina as an infant.
    • Chloe Bourgeois is a werewolf.
    • Aurore Beauréal is a succubus. Her classmate and rival Mireille Caquet is an Incubus.
    • Kagami Tsurugi and her mother Tomoe are both Nekomata.
    • Nino Lahiffe is a gargoyle.
    • Rose Lavillant is the Grim Dog of her graveyard.
    • Lê Chiên Kim is a siren. His friend Ondine is a selkie.
  • In Sugar Sushi, a Modern A.U. fanfic for Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: Mo Dao Zu Shi / The Untamed, Su She, a human in-canon, shows up as a very nasty sugar glider with a grudge against Lan Xichen.
  • There Was Once an Avenger From Krypton
    • Most of the humans in Dragon Ball Z are re-contextualized as Xandarians. Yamcha is implied to be partially Loboan, while Launch is a Monoclonal.
    • Android 18 was originally a human before she became an android. Here, she was always an android.
    • In canon, Kevin was originally a Half-Human Hybrid before it's revealed that that was a coverup and Kevin was just a mutated human. Here Kevin's mother was a human S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and his father an Osmosian that couldn't have kids together naturally, so they took his mother's DNA and altered it so he would have Osmosian-like powers, making him technically a genetically-altered human.
  • The various characters introduced in Monster Girl Encyclopedia supplement Fallen Maidens all started out human (or half-elf in Primera's case) but were transformed into monsters during the invasion of Lescatie. In ''Fourth Born's Conquest, with the exception of Sashanote , Kirschnote , and Alamerianote , all of them have so far remained human.
  • In Kaiju Revolution, the Iwi are changed from a tribe to an outright Human Subspecies due to the mutagenic affect Skull Island has on its inhabitants

  • In the RWBY/Marvel Cinematic Universe Fusion Fic In Shades of Red and Gold, several characters from RWBY are changed from humans or faunus to being mutants (even though mutants don't exist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe), including Ozpin, Velvet, and Blake, and implied with Goodwitch and Coco (possibly also Weiss and team JNPR). As well, Beacon Academy becomes Beacon Institute, the West Coast equivalent of the Xavier Institute, even being cofounded by Ozpin and Xavier. Word of God states that Ruby and Yang aren't mutants. Also, Zwei is a Robot Dog.
  • Used so much in the RWBY/World of Ere story Not Your Saint George that it would be easier to list the RWBY characters who have appeared so far that haven't had their species changed note
    • Pyrrha is Pyrrhanykos, a youngnote  red dragon.
    • Ruby, Yang, and their family are werewolves, with Summer, Raven, and Qrow also being orcs.
    • Nora is a goblin, while Ren is a hob (a catchall term for people who are part-orcs)
    • Winter and Weiss are hailene.
    • Blake is a cat hengeyokai.
  • Queens of Mewni: In Star vs. the Forces of Evil it's implied that the Butterfly Royal Family are actually descended from a human girl whom Glossaryck gave the magic wand when she got lost and fell into the magic realm, however, in the fanfic they're native Mewnians with no human ancestry whatsoever (this affects mostly Skywynne, Solaria, Eclipsa, and Meteora, due to the line being replaced by a native Mewnian after Eclipsa's imprisonment in canon. In addition, in canon the queens starting with Celena were part demon due to Celena having a demon father. In the fanfic this doesn't happen due to Unrelated in the Adaptation (Celena's mother Rhina is reduced to a cameo as a commoner in Galaxia's biography), so there's no demon ancestry in Celena, Comet, Moon, or Star. (Estrella, as far as we know, doesn't even exist in the fanfic.)
