A New Problem provides examples for:
- Adaptational Attractiveness: The characters are drawn to be more easy on the eyes in the fanart the author makes. Alfe looks more like an actual dog/anteater and even has a tail, while Roba has a face akin to a Cuphead character and Horace looks more like an average human.
- Adaptational Badass: Thaz is revealed to be a superhero in disguise.
- Adaptation Species Change: Roba is a full robot instead of a cyborg, however he used to be a human.
- Adaptational Villainy: The original Problem Solverz were chill in Paper Rad, but were turned into villains to want to destroy Horace, Roba, and Alfe.
- Annoying Younger Sibling: Guapo is mentioned to make fun of Fraz's fears. Fraz wonders if he's evil.
- Bears Are Bad News: One attacks the trio and Alfe abandons them, starting the plot.
- Berserk Button: T Bubbles slaps Horace when she's compared to Katrina Rad, her crazy cousin.
- Disappointed in You: Alfe imagines Horace saying this to him in a nightmare, but Roba says they despise him.
- Dirty Coward: Alfe runs away when a bear attacks him and his friends despite being physically stronger than them.
- Evil Orphanage Lady: It's briefly implied the owner of the orphanage never liked Horace, Roba, or Alfe and kicks them on Horace and Roba's eighteenth birthday.
- Magical Girl: Parodied by Thaz when she turns into a superhero to save the Solverz.
- Mama Bear: Thaz senses when the Problem Solverz are in danger and rushes off to save them.
- My God, What Have I Done?: Alfe feels guilty about abandoning his friends and checks if they are okay, but realizes that they want nothing to do with them. In return Roba feels bad for not looking for Alfe.
- Parental Substitute: Thaz acts like one towards Horace, Roba, and Alfe, despite them being adults. She sees them as her adopted sons despite not legally adopting them.
- Tears of Remorse: Horace cries in front of Thaz when he feels bad for leaving Roba alone.
- Toilet Paper Prank: It's mentioned that Alfe used to TP Thaz's house before he, Horace, and Roba are kicked out of the orphanage. This makes her angry but Horace and Roba apologize for his actions.
- Transformation Sequence: Thaz turns into a younger and stronger superhero when she senses that the boys are in danger.
- Twitchy Eye: Horace gets them when he says Roba shouldn't jump to conclusions after Alfe runs away to let a bear attack them.
- Vitriolic Best Buds: Roba admits he's still very mad at Alfe but still worries about him being missing.
