Fanfic / An Odd Little Family

Go To

One day, a four-year old Luz Noceda and her mami Camila stumble upon a portal in the neighborhood and find themselves in the Demon Realm. They meet a witch, Eda the Owl Lady, and they wind up becoming something like a family to one another.

An Odd Little Family is a The Owl House fanfic by TheRavenMonarch. This fic can be read on Archive of Our Own here.

An Odd Little Family provides examples of:

  • Abnormal Plushies: One of Luz's stuffed animals is a big isopod Camila got for her at the aquarium.
  • Achievements in Ignorance: During her first potion lesson from Eda, Luz insists on choosing the ingredients for her first potion herself despite not knowing anything about making them. While the result is still very messy, Luz somehow ends up making berry-flavored bubblegum, something Eda isn't even familiar with until Camila explains it to her.
  • Adaptation Species Change: While Luz and Camila were fully-human in canon, Camila has witch ancestry that results in a limited pool of magic developing after spending long enough time in the Boiling Isles, while Luz is Eda's half-witch daughter.
  • Adaptational Angst Downgrade: In canon, Camela's husband and Luz's dad Manny died tragically from a Soap Opera Disease, giving both of them lingering angst that effects their personalities on a fundamental level. Here, Luz was the product of a one-night stand between Camila and Eda.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: While Eda in her "Owl Beast" form was nothing more than a feral animal in canon, here she's much more docile, recognizing Camila, Luz and King as Eda's "mate" and "chicks."
  • Adaptational Relationship Overhaul: Hooty wasn't aware of Eda's curse until she confessed it at the end of "The Intruder". In this fic, not only does Hooty know about Eda's curse, he helped take care of her whenever she transformed into the Owl Beast, but chose not to because "It just felt like something he should do without any fuss"
  • Adaptational Sexuality: In canon, Camila's only known love was her husband Manny, while Eda mentions having many ex-boyfriends and the transmasculine non-binary Raine Whispers. Here, Eda and Camila wind up dating.
  • Crazy-Prepared: The first time Eda babysits Luz, Camila packs not one, but two changes of clothes in case Luz makes a mess. Camila ends up being right, as Luz accidentally spills juice all over herself, and later makes a mess when she somehow created her own bubblegum while making potions with Eda.
  • Fate Drives Us Together: It's after Luz and Camila meet Eda and eventually create a family unit do they find out that Camila and Eda had already met, having had the one-night stand that led to Luz's conception.
  • Point of Divergence: Rather than Eda, Luz ends up being the one to give King his name.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Luz has a habit of befriending stray animals, having befriended various raccoons in Gravesfield and taking a large centipede from Bonesborough as a pet.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Willow still ends up being the first friend her age Luz makes.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Lilith, already feeling a great amount of guilt over cursing Eda, is horrified when it's revealed that the curse is hereditary, and that Luz is afflicted with it as well. It slips into It's All My Fault when it's further explained that Luz's recessive beast curse was only trigged because she had temporarily died in the forest, with Lilith blaming herself for not being able to find her fast enough to prevent this.
  • Related in the Adaptation: While Eda was like a mother to Luz in canon, here she actually is her mother, being the product of a one-night stand and a few drunkenly cast spells.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: Lilith assumes that Luz is Eda's biological daughter based on how Eda referred to Luz as her kid when calling for help, and how she interacts with the child once she's found. Camila and Eda correct her on this and explain the actual dynamic, only for a visit to the doctor to reveal that Luz actually is Eda's daughter, as Eda was the one that Camila had a one-night stand with.
  • Serious Business: Before Luz goes over to the Owl House for the first time, she tries to find a way to take all of her stuffed animals with her out of the fear that if Luz only brought one, the others would be jealous that they wouldn't get to see a witch's house.
The idea of potentially hurting her stuffed animals’ feelings which were a very real and frightening possibility for the three-and-a-half-year-old.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: After developing her own internal reserve of magic, Camila discovers that she has a gift for communicating with animals, a magical ability so rare most think it's just a myth.
  • What Did I Do Last Night?: The only reason why Camila and Eda don't remember each other from their first encounter is because they were both very drunk.
