Fanfic / The Wizard and the Huntress

Go To

For millennias wizards have been hiding in the shadows of humanity and as a son of a human and a witch, Jim Lake Junior wasn't any different. Sticking to his best friend who was a human and a kind of mentor named Douxie, Jim laid low and tried his best to follow the teachings of Douxie and his mom with a few exceptions. But when the Trollhunter dies and its evident something else grabbed the Amulet of Daylight, everything changes. Who could possibly have the amulet and what does a specific Latina have to do with it all?

The Wizard and the Huntress is a Tales of Arcadia fanfic by Musical_Skater where Jim was raised a wizard and Claire becomes the Trollhunter instead.

This fanfic can be read on Archive of Our Own here.

The Wizard and the Huntress provides examples of:

  • Adaptation Species Change: With the premise that Wizards and Witches are distinct from humans, this is the case with Barbara (who's a witch) and Jim (who's a halfling).
  • Ascended Extra: Zoe — the pink-haired hedgewitch Douxie knows — makes a much more prominent role here, making her an unofficial member of the Trollhunters.
  • Bad Powers, Good People: Barbara is adept at Blood Magic, which she uses to great effect as a healer.
  • Freudian Excuse: Douxie has a genuine fear of the trolls in Heartstone Trollmarket because Morgana's actions have branded wizards as inherently untrustworthy to Troll-kind, this being why he tried to keep Jim from involving himself in Trollhunter-business. It is not until he is convinced into going are his fears proven irrational, Vendal recognizing him as Merlin's apprentice.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Jim is established as a halfling; a half-human, half-wizard. While he can harness magic like regular wizards, he is unable to use Magic Staffs and Magic Wands and he won't stop aging like a normal wizard.
  • Mage Species: While they look like normal humans, here it is confirmed that Wizards and Witches are a species distinct from regular humanity, both capable of harnessing magic and cease aging once they reach their magical potential.
  • Point of Divergence:
    • While canon!Jim was just a Muggle before finding the Amulet, this version is the son of a witch. Because of this, he is much more familiar with the world behind the Masquerade.
    • With Jim as his apprentice, Douxie is much more involved in Arcadia's magical business than his canon-counterpart.
    • While canon!Jim is the trollhunter, here that mantle goes to Claire.
    • This version of Barbara is an ancient, well-learned witch instead of a Muggle doctor. While Strickler tries seducing Barbara to get to Jim, this version of Barbara knows what he is and fakes falling for it, venting about how little he thinks of her when he isn't around.
  • Secret-Keeper:
    • Having known Jim since they were little, Toby has been this for Jim, Douxie and Barbara's status as wizards, becoming the Token Human for their nightly excursions.
    • When Claire becomes the Trollhunter, Mary and Darci become this for her.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: One of the things about Jim that Claire finds attractive is that he's so humble in-spite of his awesome powers and that he cares about what she thinks and feels.
  • Wizards Live Longer: One characteristic all magic users seem to possess is that they are able to stop aging when they realize their magical potential, Douxie having ceased aging in the 12th-century and Barbara at some point before that.
  • Yin-Yang Bomb: Jim had both equal affinity towards Light Magic and Dark Magic, a balance that will eventually be permanently offset when he comes of age.
