At the same time Jonathan Joestar and Dio Brando meet, they also meet another new addition to the Joestar household, Lydia Twilight. And her appearance will change the history of the Joestar family in many bizarre ways.

JoJo New Universe is a Massive Multiplayer Crossover collection of fanfiction by mtnetsurfer that are basically retellings of the stories of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure with the addition of characters from various franchises such as My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Danganronpa, Persona 5, and others. It can be found here.

The series is also accompanied by a supplementary guide on the Stands of various characters, titled JoJo New Universe: Stand Archives. It can be read here.

JoJo New Universe contains examples of:

  • Abled in the Adaptation:
    • While Iggy still fights Pet Shop and wins, he wasn't forced to bite off one of his paws when he gets stuck in ice. Instead, thanks to some quick thinking, he only ends up tearing off the skin of his paws just to escape Pet Shop's attacks in time.
    • In canon, Polnareff tried taking on Diavolo by himself, a stupidly impulsive move that cost him his legs, his right eye, and his right arm, requiring him to wear prosthetics and get around in a wheelchair. Here, his injuries didn't happen because he had Avdol and Kakyoin backing him up during the fight. The three of them overwhelmed Diavolo by superior numbers, power, and experience, forcing the latter to flee France.
    • The students of Hope's Peak Academy are much less dysfunctional in this setting, with many of their canon issues and traumas nonexistent thanks to factors like Kakyoin taking control of the school away from the Steering Committee, or the students themselves making different choices.
  • Adaptational Attractiveness: Enya the Hag in this setting was a beautiful young woman from the 1800s who became immortal when DIO, who became a vampire, granted her the privilege of drinking his blood. Her canon appearance as an old hag is explained here as a disguise she wore to lure the Stardust Crusaders into a trap, in a reversal of how in the 2000s Stardust Crusaders OVA, she disguised herself as a young woman. She also doesn't have the two right hands her oldest son, J. Geil, has because she had her deformity fixed with surgery.
  • Adaptational Badass: This happens to many characters due to the changed setting, as well as changed circumstances and choices.
    • In Danganronpa, due to the place's extreme focus on talents, many students of Hope's Peak Academy held Ultimate Talents in one field of specialization and only that. Thanks to Kakyoin and the Speedwagon Foundation taking control of Hope's Peak Academy in this setting, the students became more intelligent and emotionally mature thanks to their school including general education to prepare them for the real world. They're also all Stand users, whether being born as one or having potential to become one. They also worked together more coherently in taking down threats such as the Big Bad of JoJolion, Honami Sato.
    • Fluttershy in this setting, while still a bit shy like her canon counterpart, is more assertive and willing to fight, especially if Jotaro is involved. She's also a Stand user with power over nature and animals, whereas canon Fluttershy, who was no slouch herself at times when it came to saving the world, was more a Shrinking Violet who had trouble standing up for herself and reacted more to threats than actively confronting them herself.
    • Canon Hol Horse was an Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain who heavily relied on J. Geil to do the fighting, and his own fighting skills essentially amounted to shooting windows and glass for J. Geil to travel through. And despite talking game about his own Stand, he is ultimately a Boisterous Weakling who is undone by his own incompetence. Here, a series of events leads to Hol Horse betraying DIO and taking full control of his own life by siding with the Joestars, leading to Emperor becoming far more powerful and accurate than in canon.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance:
    • In canon, Stands didn't become prominent until Stardust Crusaders. Here, they show up as early as the 1800s in Phantom Blood's Lydia "Twilight Sparkle" Twilight, who wields the Stand Love is in Bloom in addition to being a Hamon user.
    • Inverted with Hamon, which continues to be relevant in the series while in canon it was largely phased out after Diamond is Unbreakable.
  • Adaptational Explanation:
    • The famous star-shaped birthmark of the Joestar line is given context in this story. It first appeared on the neck of the earliest known Joestar ancestor, Joffrey Joestar, while he was under inquisition. It was taken as a sign from God that he was innocent, and everyone who shared Joffrey's blood lineage received the same mark, thus showing the Joestar clan was favored by fate.
    • Polnareff's canon idea of tickling Mannish Boy (to make him eat Kakyoin's baby food) is explained here as coming from past experiences of raising his sister Sherry by himself following the deaths of their parents to a plague.
  • Adaptational Nationality:
    • As members of the Zeppeli family in this setting, Hol Horse and Rarity are Italian-American. In canon, Hol Horse is an American, while Rarity is an Equestrian Pony.
    • Fluttershy in this setting is a Japanese classmate of Jotaro's who eventually becomes his girlfriend and wife. In canon, she was an Equestrian Pony.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Many characters, both in JoJo and out of it, are hit with these in varying degrees.
    • During Jojolion, the Psychopaths of Dead Rising (except the Convicts) are just regular people (their roles instead being taken by the Dead by Daylight Killers), with many of them helping their fellow survivors. Some examples include Cliff Hudson, who despite still losing his granddaughter to the zombies, maintained his sanity and rescued any survivors who wandered into Crislip's Home Saloon, using the empty store nearby as a makeshift safehouse; Steven Chapman, upon being assisted in dealing with the Doctor, was more than willing to give the medicine needed for Barnaby; Paul Carson, though nearly snapping like he did in the original game, instead used his Molotovs to protect the women he initially thought were making fun of him from the Nurse. Perhaps the biggest case is Adam MacIntyre, who actually works for the Noah's Ark Circus under Joshu Higashikata and helps him deal with the Clown.
  • Adaptational Superpower Change: Many characters from different media had their canon powers changed so that they're all Stand users. However, it's also downplayed in most cases as while their powers relatively stayed the same, it's the source of said powers that changed.
  • Adaptation Name Change:
    • While the Pillar Men group of villains from canon Battle Tendency retain their name in Battle Tendency, the Pillar Men race is called "Gigans" here.
    • Downplayed with Hol Horse. While his name is relatively unchanged, his full name is revealed to be Hol Horse Zeppeli.
  • Adaptation Species Change: In My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, the Mane Six are all Ponies, though what Pony tribe they were part of depended on the individual. Twilight Sparkle in particular was a Unicorn-turned-Alicorn, the living sum of all three Pony tribes. Here, they're all humans with the power to use Stands.
  • All There in the Manual: A separate fanfic, JoJo New Universe: Stand Archives, was created to explain the powers of each original Stand created for this series. Links to each Stand's file can be found peppered throughout each story.
  • Alternate History: The world of New Universe got hit with Second Impact in 2000. But unlike Evangelion, it wasn't an apocalypse scenario thanks to a lone Stand user, Rusty "Shining Armor" Dashell, containing the majority of the blast with Stand-manifested barriers. Instead, the planet's climate underwent some benign changes, including most of Russia thawing out and paving the way for the founding of new countries.
  • Author Appeal: The author, mtnetsurfer, is a big fan of Toku, and as such plenty of references and Shout-Outs to both Kamen Rider and Super Sentai can be found. And like Araki, mtnetsurfer named most of his Stands after music he enjoys, so the genre of music referenced has a much different feel to it.
  • Badass Family: As is the case in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, there are several prominent families in the series that kick ass.
    • The Joestar Family is one of the most prominent family lineages in the setting, starting with Phantom Blood's Jonathon Joestar and his adoptive sister Lydia "Twilight Sparkle" Twilight. While Jonathon Joestar starts out normal like his canon counterpart, he eventually becomes a prodigious Hamon and Stand user, whereas Twilight from the get-go is a prodigy in both academics and Hamon, and introduced the concept of Stands way earlier than canon did by virtue of being a Stand user herself. Jonathon Joestar eventually marries and settles down with his wife, Erina Joestar (nee Pendleton), creating multiple generations of Joestars who went on to help save the world from multiple threats, including vampires, Pillar Men, Serial Killers, etc.
    • The Zeppeli Family has served as allies and/or mentors of the Joestars, starting with Phantom Blood's William Zeppeli. Unlike canon, where the Zeppelis tend to be very short-lived and often die to give incentive for the Joestars to fight on, the changed setting means the Zeppelis get to establish more generations, leading to the birth of the likes of Hol Horse, Gyro Zeppeli, and Rarita "Rarity" Zeppeli. The Zeppelis also contain powerful Hamon and Stand users. And while Hol Horse starts off as a hired mercenary and assassin for DIO, a series of events leads to him joining the heroes and playing a important role in DIO's death upon realizing how bad his boss truly is.
    • The Speedwagon Family, thanks to Robert E. O. Speedwagon falling in love and marrying Twilight, also has multiple generations to its name. In addition to heading one of the biggest organizations in the setting, the Speedwagon Family has a few heroic members like the twins Iro "Rainbow Dash" Dashell and Rusty "Shining Armor" Dashell, as well as Shining Armor's wife, Cadence Dashell. Like the Zeppeli Family, the Speedwagon Family is a prominent ally of the Joestars, though they often assist by providing vital information and other resources needed to save the day.
  • Badass Normal: As the series is mostly centered within the world of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, even non-Stand users are able to get in on the action.
    • As in canon, Robert E.O. Speedwagon of the Phantom Blood arc was never able to wield Hamon like Jonathon or Twilight Sparkle. He still made up for this by helping his allies using both his trusty sledgehammer and his ability to detect a person's inner evil by smell.
    • The Investigation Team of Persona 4 were implied to have been normal teenagers when the events of their native game occurred. This makes their canon feats, such as confronting and defeating Tohru Adachi (who was a Stand user here), all the more impressive.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Many characters, including the heroes, are very nice and good-natured. However, if they get angry or are in a situation where their loved ones are threatened, they won't hesitate to kick ass.
  • By the Power of Grayskull!: The Miraculous Heroes use this, of course, but so does Strike Back. Not because they have to to invoke their Phantom Thief attire (a manifestation of their Stand energy) but just for Rule of Cool.
  • Cast Herd: And the Stands to go with them. The archives list almost 350 Stands, including variations due to reincarnation, Requiem, or Heaven powers. And that doesn't even account for all the characters total, spread across fourteen works and counting!
  • Crippling Overspecialization: Deconstructed and defied with the students of Hope's Peak Academy. Hope's Peak Academy was originally founded by Izuru Kamukura to encourage the nurturing of people's talents, but under the Steering Committee, the school's directive started focusing only on nurturing talents to toxic, unfettered degrees. By the time Kakyoin takes control of Hope's Peak Academy, most of its students have caught on that they're only enrolled for their Ultimate talents and thus became apathetic to their education, figuring they could get by with only their status as Ultimates. It takes them some convincing from Kakyoin and Chisa for the students to become comfortable at Hope's Peak Academy and welcome learning about things beyond their talents.
  • Crossover Couple: This occurs frequently due to the series being a Massive Multiplayer Crossover. One of the most notable examples is the Mane Six, who married various characters from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, including succeeding generations of the Joestar Family — which served to derail the entire canon plot.
  • Demoted to Extra: In the original incarnation of Neon Genesis Evangelion, Toji Suzuhara became the Fourth Child, but fell victim to Bardiel and was heavily injured when Gendo activated the dummy plug on Shinji's EVA-01 to stop Bardiel while the Angel was possessing Toji's EVA-03. Here, because Mari Makinami Illustrious and Kaworu Nagasi became EVA pilots instead, Toji's role in the story was greatly diminished.
  • Expy: The EVA pilots in Cruel Angel's Thesis wind up as one to Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger. Justified in-universe as Toei Company was one of NERV's sponsors.
  • Foreshadowing: DIO's formula for creating a Heaven Stand mentioned that at one point the original Stand must be destroyed. Every time we see a Stand go Requiem (Silver Chariot, Gold Experience, and W Boiled Xtreme), there's an element of destruction as the Stand reaches its new state. Silver Chariot literally melts, Gold Experience's skin breaks apart, and W Boiled Xtreme's chains, feathers, and mask are seen falling away from it as it shoots into the sky. Sure enough, Requiem is just an intermediary stage allowing a Stand the possibility of turning into a Heaven Stand.
  • Genre Shift: And with much more genres to add. Spirit Tracks is an isekai story, Jojolion is a high school adventure, Cruel Angel's Thesis is a giant robot adventure, and Stars Are Eternal is a tokusatsu.
  • Historical Domain Superperson: In Jojolion, it's revealed that various historical figures, such as George Washington, Tokugawa Ieyasu, Genghis Khan, Thomas Edison, Winston Churchill, and Aleister Crowley were Stand users (of which only Crowley's Stand, The Book of Love, is known). It's noted that history would be painted in a different light if people publicly knew about this.
  • Invisible to Normals: As in JoJo canon, Stands in general are this, but in canon they can only be seen by other Stand users, no ifs, ands, or buts. In this story, anyone with a supernatural affinity can see Stands, though the Stands themselves appear transparent unless the people looking at them are Stand users themselves.
  • Lighter and Softer:
    • While the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series is not without its weird and goofy moments, many characters tend to die horrible deaths, both heroes and villains alike, while the villains themselves are frequently willing to Kick the Dog in order to establish how monstrous and threatening they are. And while the heroes do win in the end, it often comes with a steep price. In this setting, many characters are smarter in how they fight and behave, and the presence of the Mane Six becomes a massive boon to the Joestar family, as it ensures deaths happen less often and villains don't cause as much damage as they did in canon.
    • The Danganronpa series is about groups of students being forced to kill each other in sadistic killing games where "culprits" are punished in the most horrific ways imaginable. Any acts of kindness or attempts to avoid meaningless deaths are rendered completely meaningless, as the purpose of the Killing Games is to spread chaos and despair. In this setting, the entire plot is derailed when Kakyoin (who survived the final battle with DIO) takes control of Hope's Peak Academy away from the Steering Committee, while Junko Enoshima, the mastermind of the Killing Games, is given a constructive way to express her fears and insecurities (in this case, her own Stand) without resorting to violence. Instead, the early parts of Jojolion consists of typical high school shenanigans before the students get involved in wider conspiracies.
    • A Gentleman, A Thief, A King, And A Hero is basically a retelling of The Infamous Man's Just an Unorthodox Thief, with both starring Lupin III in the role of Assassin and Servant of Kirei Kotomine with the Court of Owls being the main antagonists. While the original fanfic more or less kept the fairly dark tone of Fate/Zero even with Lupin's involvement, sparing only a few characters their canon fates while leaving others to still suffer and die in other ways, the involvement of characters from other properties in the JoJo New Universe lead to all but the most villainous characters achieving a happy ending, with the exception of Tokiomi, who instead gets to pull a Redemption Equals Death rather than die unceremoniously or live forever a disgrace.
    • Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of the most famous Genre Deconstructions of the Super Robot Genre, with all of the characters being psychologically broken in some way, the protagonists being living weapons and potential harbingers of the apocalypse, and the Humongous Mechas being living Soul Jars for the pilots' mothers. The enemies the pilots fight are extremely powerful Angelic Abominations, with one of them having the power to outright inflict Mind Rape. The Cruel Angel's Thesis arc in JoJo New Universe serves as a Reconstruction of Neon Genesis Evangelion itself, with the pilots having better families, Yui's canon fate being part of a plan by SEELE that Gendo ruined thanks to a certain alien's advice, and everyone being much more well-adjusted compared to their canon selves.
    • Persona 5 depicted Tokyo as a Crapsack World where everyone is too scared or apathetic to care about the horrors happening around them thanks to the more oppressive and brutal aspects of Japanese society. The Phantom Thieves have all suffered one way or another, whether through false charges, abusive teachers and authority figures, witnessing a friend attempt suicide bc of said abusive teachers, or being made to believe they were responsible for a family member's death. In JoJo New Universe, everyone has enough common sense to actually look into instances of corruption and try to resolve it in any way they can, while the people behind Tokyo's corruption in canon are decent, well-meaning adults who were framed by a secret conspiracy that sought to spread their influence. The Phantom Thieves themselves are much more well-adjusted than their canon selves, and work far better as a team than they did in canon.
  • Magic A Is Magic A: Zigzagged with how Stands interact with other types of supernatural ability. In general such forces can still affect the Stand user, and certain passive skills can still affect a Stand. But one rule that remains is that only a Stand can damage another Stand, and Stand users have consistently used their Stands to block other types of supernatural attacks, such as from Miraculous holders or Akumatized villains.
  • Massive Multiplayer Crossover: The fanfic series initially starts off as just a crossover between JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic when Twilight Sparkle is adopted into the Joestar family following her parents' deaths by illness. Then the series gradually includes characters from Persona, Danganronpa, and Neon Genesis Evangelion as well.
  • Mythology Gag: Two characters will sometimes do their Dual Heat combos from Eyes of Heaven.
  • Named by the Adaptation: The Pillar Men was just a moniker given to them based on where their hibernating forms were located, while the actual name of their species was never given. Here, it's revealed that their species is called the Gigan.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: The canonical names of the characters from My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic are just nicknames everyone calls them by in this universe.
  • Phantom Thief: As in canon, this is played with in the Phantom Thieves, known here as Strike Back. While they fit the classic Phantom Thief archetype, down to sending calling cards to their victims before committing the theft, they take the Sly Cooper approach and only steal from criminals and corrupt evil doers. This also makes them Cowboy Cops in that sense, as they work outside the law to bring evildoers to justice, which causes them to clash with law enforcement across the world, who respect them for what they do but still try to bring them in since they are breaking the law.
  • Point of Divergence: Many points occur throughout the series thanks to circumstances and choices being changed.
    • The fanfic series starts with Jonathon Joestar of Phantom Blood gaining an adoptive sister in Twilight Sparkle in addition to his canonical adoptive brother, Dio Brando/DIO. Thanks to Twilight's intellect and skills (one of which is a Stand, which wouldn't be introduced until Stardust Crusaders canonically), Jonathon becomes smarter and more powerful much earlier than his canon counterpart, setting the plot in motion.
    • Noriaki Kakyoin survives past Stardust Crusaders thanks to Fluttershy protecting him from what would've been a fatal blow from DIO. Because of his survival, the plot of Danganronpa is completely derailed because Kakyoin is able to wrest control of Hope's Peak Academy away from the Steering Committee and become its administrator with help from the Speedwagon Foundation. This all but ensures that the project that created Izuru Kamukura (and therefore the Killing Games) would never come to fruition, and the students would become massively well-adjusted due to being put in a much healthier learning environment.
  • Pretender Diss: During the Cruel Angel's Thesis arc, SEELE tries to reverse-engineer the Stand virus to make Stand users of their own. While the subjects in question do gain artificial Stands, they're widely considered to be inferior, as the process that gave them their powers essentially involved supernatural cybernetics, rather than a Stand arrow. Even non-Stand users are capable of overpowering the SEELE "Stand" users.
  • Psychic Powers: Throughout the series, the Stands have been compared to psychic powers, with their various powers resembling some form of telekinesis or ESP. This is mostly due to the nature of Stands, which means only Stand users can fully see them (non-Stand users with supernatural affinity can see Stands as well, but the Stands themselves look transparent to them). Though some people like Avdol and Yasuhiro do have legitimate clairvoyance separate from their Stands, and some Stands like Nagito's Miracles and Haru's Excite do grant psychic powers as their ability.
  • Random Power Ranking: Stands are classed into three types in this story. Alpha-level Stands have a definitive physical form capable of combat. Beta-level Stands have a physical form, but either limited or zero combat capabilities. Gamma-level Stands are things like auras or attached concepts with little if any physical form. Then there's Omega-level Stands, which refers to Requiem or Heaven Stands. It's noted that this ranking is less about raw power (for example, a Gamma-level Stand could have greater power than an Alpha-level Stand depending on the ability and stats) and more about spiritual capability.
  • Reconstruction: Cruel Angel's Thesis basically rebuilds the tropes Neon Genesis Evangelion broke down.
  • Recursive Fanfiction: A Gentleman, A Thief, A King, And A Hero lifts a lot of its premise from The Infamous Man's Just an Unorthodox Thief, though it ends up diverging heavily from even that fanfic's story due to its additional crossover elements.
  • Shock and Awe: A running theme with EVA Pilots. Shinji's Cruel Angel's Thesis has electrical powers, Rei has an electric "Mode" thanks to her Gigan genetics, Asuka's Hamon has an electric base, Aigis can create an electric charge by overclocking her power core, and Kaworu can manipulate his AT field to create an electric current.
  • Shout-Out Theme Naming: Much like how Golden Wind's character had Edible Theme Naming and Stone Ocean's characters are named after fashion brands, in Spirit Tracks most of the characters encountered in the temples (save the Forest Temple) are named after famous fantasy authors.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Many characters who originally died in their respective canons are spared from death here, whether through intervention or changed circumstances.
  • Sucky School: Defied in this setting. Hope's Peak Academy was founded by Izuru Kamukura with the purpose of fostering natural talent in students, but the Steering Committee later made it the center of the "Ultimate Hope" project, which would have turned any chosen student into The Ace at the cost of destroying their personality. Even the students of Hope's Peak Academy are initially apathetic to learning because they realized the school only cared about their talents. Thanks to Kakyoin, a maternal descendant of the school's founder, Hope's Peak Academy is put under the Speedwagon Foundation's educational jurisdiction, averting much tragedy and dysfunction and transforming its bad reputation into a positive one. Ironically, the students of JJNU's Hope's Peak Academy encounter surviving students of the Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony timeline, who are understandably traumatized by what they went through.
  • Super Mode: As in canon, Requiem Stands are what happens when a Stand gets pierced by the Requiem arrow or, as revealed by Phantom Thief Joker Part 2, when the Stand user is Akumatized. While they become more powerful, their abilities are often completely different from what they had pre-empowering. Phantom Thief Joker Part 2 also reveals Stands can enter Heaven Mode by being Liberated by the Eagle Miraculous while Akumatized; Heaven Mode Stands gain stronger versions of the powers they had at baseline, to the point where they can be considered godlike.
  • Technology Marches On: As time keeps passing throughout the series, the internet shows that people in-universe are slowly coming to learn and accept that the supernatural is all around them. Many websites are noted to be dedicated to the study of Stands, for example.
  • Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny: Naturally given the nature of the fic, as many characters fight against other characters not from their canon (most commonly the MLP heroines fighting against JoJo villains).
  • Up the Real Rabbit Hole: Downplayed in regards to the alter verse, which is considered a pocket reality between the main verse and any true alternate universes. While the validity of this claim is never brought up, what is acknowledged is that neither the main verse nor the alter verse are any more real than the other.
  • War Is Hell: In Spirit Tracks, the author makes no bones about the fact that soldiers are dying by the thousands during the two wars featured. Sure the individual battles between main characters is a light romp and they have Plot Armor, but the aftermath is still somber.
  • Whole-Plot Reference:
  • World of Badass: Just like the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series, the world of JoJo New Universe is full of badasses. Except here, the badass factor is amped up due to various characters being made stronger and more competent, while franchises like Danganronpa and Neon Genesis Evangelion are made Lighter and Softer due to people making more rational decisions. In addition, almost everyone is a Stand user of some kind, and they are almost always drawn to each other by fate. If someone happens to be a Stand user, likely they would end up becoming a badass by the end of whatever they went through.
    • Even if they don't somehow possess a Stand, they can still wind up badass. They might be a mage with incredible magical powers. They might be a Hamon user with the power to destroy the undead. Hell, they might just possess a Charles Atlas Superpower. The world of JoJo New Universe has no shortage of heroes with awesome powers.
