Find a Trope:
openHow dare you investigate me!
Officer Alice is investigating a crime for which Bob is a suspect. She finds hard evidence (if not irrefutable proof) of Bob's guilt and brings it to his attention. Rather than either attempting a lame defense that Alice wouldn't buy or admitting his guilt and getting it over with, Bob claims that Alice is in the wrong for prosecuting him. He'll probably claim that she's besmirching his good name, or he'll say that she's a facist because she won't let him do whatever he wants. What would this "defense" be called?
openTrope for fake grunts
I feel that there is a trope that’s used to refer to a character using some kind of visual trickery to make it look like they have grunts/troops/mooks/whatever when they really don’t, mainly to try and keep a somewhat intimidating image. Does anyone know what that might be?
openDistraction Carnifex
A distraction which is designed to cause the enemy to react on it with "Oh, Crap!" or at least "Why Won't You Die?". Named after the one of Skill Gate Characters of Warhammer 40,000 which is a giant living tank usually send straight onto the enemy just to allow the real threats move into range. This is the reason why in video games tanks are visually bigger and scarier than damage dealers, and also more annoying than dangerous, and also a part of how tanks work in Pv P where Draw Aggro does not work by mechanical ways. If in this situation the both threats are equally dangerous, it becomes a Sadistic Choice and Xanatos Gambit.
openAccidental Broadcast
A character accidentally records or broadcasts something during a private conversation.
openObnoxious Party Crasher
Do we have something for when someone shows up at a party, whether they were invited or not, and makes a complete ass of themselves, driving the other guests crazy and possibly ending up getting tossed out on their ass?
The example that made me ask is in this series of strips starting here and running through here (this one is very NSFW and some of the others are a little sketchy so be careful where you look at these).
openSibling fighting team
Is there a trope like Battle Couple but siblings rather than lovers? For example, Wolfenstein: Youngblood.
openOpposite Sex Alternate Universe Self
Do we have a trope for when characters encounter a version of themselves from an alternate universe that is the opposite gender?
I didn't find anything going through Gender-Blending Tropes and Opposite-Sex Clone didn't have any comparable tropes, either.
openBorrowed Title
The title of a work is borrowed from a line of another work. It’s not Names The Same, because the line the title is borrowed from isn’t the title itself.
Example: A Separate Peace takes its title from a line written by Ernest Hemingway in one of his books (I believe it’s A Farewell to Arms).
Edited by CyokieRevottopenForced to do work after being defeated
A bully or a bad guy defeated the hero (or one of the good guys) and forced him to work for said bully/bad guy.
I thought Defeat Means Menial Labor can fit, but reading the description, it cannot.
Do we have this?
Edited by 4tell0life4openLike "battle pass", but free
I wonder if we have something like this:
- Honkai Impact 3rd: Every day, there's the "duty" gauge to be filled by doing daily quests. For each part of the gauge filled, there'll be a few rewards; there are 5 sets of rewards each day.
openMistreated Friend
A friend that, while liked by their friend(s), is generally neglected or mistreated by them. It's usually unintentional, but doesn't stop the friend from feeling hurt and rejected- especially if they've been loyal.
openFailed Author Turned English Teacher Live Action TV
Is there a trope for those guys? They dream about becoming a famous author, but their novel is a failure, so they're forced to become Apathetic Teachers trying to get high school kids to read their assigned books?
openOnly Good Adult
In a setting full of useless, neglectful, or just plain abusive adults, there is one adult that wants to and can help the young protagonist(s).
openOut of universe name
When a character's name is only known or fully known outside the work. So for instance, Beetlejuice is the title of the film and "Beetle Juice" is his name in the credits, but in the film he's always called Betelgeuse. Or the fact that the word "Ewok" is never mentioned in "Return of the Jedi."
openLocal hunter
Is there a trope for when a specific individual animal is always found in an area as an antagonist well beyond when it should've left. I want to differenciate it from Super Persistant Predator because that would mean it chases its prey far longer from its territory as possible.
An example would be Grumpy from Land of the lost
openImplication-blind
A character is completely unaware of the implications (unfortunate or not) what they say or do, especially if everyone around them does.
In this case, the police get reports of a creepy-looking guy skulking around a children's playground. They send someone to investigate, and he sees a windowless white van pull up, a guy in a Conspicuous Trenchcoat get out and st on a bench, staring fixedly at the kids on the playground. The cop goes to find out what's going on, but notices the guy never takes his eyes off the kids. Finally it's revealed the guy is actually babysitting his niece, and when asked why he keeps his eyes on her, replies it's because you hear about child predators everywhere and he's damned if one of those is getting her on his watch (with his other traits being easily explained, the van because it's his only vehicle, the coat because he thought it might rain, etc.).
So here the guy is completely oblivious to the fact that his every action leads to him being Mistaken for Pedophile despite it being obvious to anyone else.
Edited by Chabal2openReturning to a difficult home
Is there a trope that describes someone trying to return home after being displaced Ala The Homeward Journey but they, along with the audience, know that the home they're trying to get back to is difficult to live in and if they're kids the guardians are abusive, yet they still try to return
Is there a tropes for this? Two captive characters stage a violent fight so that when their captor comes in to break it up, they can get the jump on him.
Examples:
