Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread
for ongoing cleanup projects.
Ask the Tropers is for:
- • General questions about the wiki, how it works, and how to do things.
- • Reports of problems with wiki articles, or requests for help with wiki articles.
- • Reports of misbehavior or abuse by other tropers.
Ask the Tropers is not for:
- • Help identifying a trope. See TropeFinder.
- • Help identifying a work. See MediaFinder.
- • Asking if a trope example is valid. See the Trope Talk forum.
- • Proposing new tropes. See TropeLaunchPad.

openShould this have been deleted? Film
I was looking at the history for Smokey and the Bandit and I found this had been deleted:
- How long was Charlotte crated up and left in a dark warehouse in Florida? And pregnant, no less. The guard didn't seem to know what was in crate 1444, did she get food and water?
The reason for deletion was "Deleted a fridge horror entry that had nothing to do with the film", but this does look like it has something to do with the film (well, the sequel, but the work page covers the entire trilogy). Would it be okay to readd it?
openDuelingWorks table
I'm not sure if this is a bug, but the formatting of the tables in the Dueling Works pages are messed up, with the first two column beings squashed to a single character width that it's almost impossible to read the titles of the works being "dueled".
open Potholing confusion
Hiya!
Got questions about potholing. My understanding is that whenever there's a Creator or Work mentioned, it should be potholed — even if there's no Creator or Works page yet, which will result in a redlink. I also often pothole things like city names or store chain names as "Useful Notes" even when they result in redlinks. The thinking as I understand it is that if someone down the line actually creates such a page, the redlink will automatically turn blue.
I just had some Work examples reverted back to non-potholed status by a fellow troper. These involve pieces of music (ones in italics such as album titles or pieces of Classical Music) and a non-fiction reference book (which I potholed under "Literature"). Assuming the fellow troper is correct, could someone either provide an on-site link or some official editor-based feedback on this?
TBH, I'm now extremely reluctant to pothole any more such examples unless I get some firm official guidelines.
Thanks!
openYMMV / TheLastOfUsPartII
Removing non-YMMV items from YMMV.The Last Of Us Part II when I found this:
- Informed Wrongness: Part of why Ellie's depiction is divisive. Ellie goes on a Roaring Rampage of Revenge, same as the other playable character Abby, however many felt that the game condoned Abby's revenge quest, while condemning Ellie's.
It does not condone Abby's revenge. It condones Abby realizing revenge was wrong and making a more successful attempt to give it up than Ellie (the problems with that are covered under Unintentionally Unsympathetic). And I think the only way attempting to kill like Ellie intended isn't morally wrong is self-defense which isn't the case here. Thoughts?
openIssue with HairDecorations on Characters.HopeOfTheShieldHero
So, on Characters.Hope Of The Shield Hero, Hair Decorations was removed by a troper doing cleanup (although to be fair that person didn't use an edit reason) and was added back by Allen Blaster and then the same trope/disambig was removed by another troper doing clean up and then Allen Blaster added it back again.
Granted he just changed it to Never Bare Headed a second after I posted this but he didnt rewrite the entry to fit that trope so it's technically still a ZCE but I dont want to edit it without feedback since I would be participating in an Edit war at this point.
The former Hair decs entry in question that now links to Never Bareheaded:
- Never Bareheaded: The two blue ribbons she uses to tie up her Girlish Pigtails.
EDIT: Also the same troper added back Lolicon on the same page after it was removed for not being a trope stating even if it isnt one it still belongs on the character page and that basically someone who hasnt read the fic has no right to remove it.
I guess he is taking these clean ups personally since he wrote the fic itself.
Edited by MacronNotesopenVoice Actor in Ne Zha Film
Who is the actor that voices Yuanshi Tianzun in the English Dub version of Ne Zha?
openPervy entry on an Awesome page for a family comedy
Awesome.Singin In The Rain claims the scene of the woman sensually dancing and showing off her legs to be a Moment of Awesome. While that may have been intended for Fanservice, I still think it's a bit too perverted to list that as an Awesome moment, especially since the movie is a comedy that's entirely SFW and most of the female dancers aren't really portrayed in that fan-servicey a manner.
Edited by UnicorndanceopenJust removed this from Gamebooks
For the record, I've removed this entry from Gamebooks.
- Listened to in sequential order, Kendrick Lamar’s album “DAMN” is about the protagonist coming to terms with his own flaws and learning to love himself despite them. If played backwards, it’s about his descent into madness and self-loathing.
I mean, seriously?
open"Common Knowledge" example?
YMMV.My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic
- Common Knowledge:
- Celestia and Luna are born alicorns according to Word of God. Not that it stops some portions of the fandom from thinking that they ascended like Twilight if the Fandom-Specific Plot page is anything to go by mostly thanks to a few infamous lines during the Season 6 premiere, in where Celestia and Luna say that Equestria has never seen an alicorn birth and the idea is beyond their understanding respectively. These two lines somehow gave birth to this misconception, often due to being combined with some of the examples above, particularly regarding the one where Equestria encompass the world. After all, if Celestia and Luna are not born as alicorns in Equestria, by that logic they must have ascended instead of simply being born elsewhere.
In light of prior removals, I question if this is an example. If it is only refuted by Word of God I don't think it's and example of Common Knowledge which is something clearly refuted in the actual work.
I PM'd the troper who added it and they gave this link. Is this useful for this trope or anything? The troper also said "it was in the production notes by Lauren Faust during the Season 1-2 era that those two are BORN alicorns", But the MLP wiki didn't say anything on the matter despite mention such details elsewhere. It took me a while of searching to find this confining it. Is it really Common Knowledge if it is something so hard to find? Not even getting into the debate over Faust's word no longer being necessarily canon.
Edited by Ferot_DreadnaughtopenWhat is the point of this folder on Wendigo?
Last month, a folder titles "Tropes applying to it" was added on Wendigo. Looking through the examples in it, it seems to be applying tropes to... a trope. Should I just cut it?
openI can't read a PM from an unknown troper
I received a PM simply titled "Discord" from someone whose name the mailbox doesn't display for some reason. I tried to read the PM, only to get the error message: "Sorry, this conversation is meant to be private."
What should I do?
Edited by IukaSylvieopenHow do I save a picture that's not from a Wiki page? Web Original
I'm confused on how to save pictures of characters onto a characters page. But I have no idea idea how. Ive already checked out the administrative page on it but I'm still confused. Can you help?
openRegarding an entry on the Main.{{Jerkass}} page
Just ran across this at the end of the Main.Jerkass page (here's the history):
There may be some offensive language (i.e. "punk" being changed to "you faggot") in there. What's the best possible way we can do about this?
Edited by gjjonesresolved Sandboxes for work pages Literature
I plan to create work page for one book series (it has no page on this wiki, I checked). Knowing what my memory is unreliable (first book is from 2004, for example, I was at middle school back then), I currently re-reading it, so I may add and correct things on the go.
To avoid littering wiki with unfinished drafts in Literature/ namespace, I want to use sandbox to work on it, but wouldn't risk this unless I'm sure it's allowed. For now, I work in document outside of TV Tropes, but it creates entirely different set of problems, namely inability to check wether formatting works, or experimenting with classifying characters to find optimal way.
If allowed, I would put current draft in sandbox (or two, since both main page and characters pages wouldn't be short even in current, unfinished state) and continue from here. This way, I can work on it at my own pace, launching it when ready.
openPoor quality edits by troper
Just ran into some work by a troper named "Melinda" who seems to have trouble expressing themselves clearly — bad sentence structure, typos, strange word use. Maybe an administrator should investigate? Examples:

openNew work page workstation thread?
I've noticed that tropers looking for advice on creating a work page tend to pop up in various areas (either here, in Trope/Wiki talk, or in low effort 'please help me' drafts in TLP), so I was thinking of starting a thread for tropers new to work-page-making who may just need a couple more pairs of eyes. What do you all think?
EDIT: Thread's now live

DethroningMoment. My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic has an entry another troper stated was plagiarized and asked me if it should be removed as such. I looked over UsefulNotes.Plagiarism and my impression is it is ok to remove but I want to ask here to be sure.
Here is the material being plagiarized from.
