Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Sure to Kobayashi:

  • The Stormlight Archive: Rayse, the Shardborn who inheritred the Shard of Hatred, Odium, is a stern, tyrannical man who made it his mission to hunt down and sunder the other Shardborn. Heedless of who gets in his way, Rayse is willing to burn entire worlds to shatter the rest, having murdered those seen as "The Almighty" in the process while sowing his dark influence on worlds to create war and bloodshed until he can conquer or raze it to nothing. On the world the eries is set, Rayse's influence is responsible for the mental lobotomies and enslavement of the Parshendi race, the massive wars and the corruption of many others with his own Fused being little more than slaves he will send to eternal damnation for failure. Arriving himself, Rayse intends to slaughter everything in the world until all that is left are him and his own twisted armies, a process he will repeat through the cosmos.

But wait. There's more...

Did you really think I would make a double post?

What is the work?

Heat Guy J is a semi-dramatic Anime Buddy Cop Show about a cop and his android police partner.

"Trust" is the ninth episode of the only season. Dice investigates rumours of an illegal passport operation. Dice discovers that a local drunk's new beau is not as nice as he seems.

Who is Gene Glen, and what has he done?

We are introduced to the illegal immigrant Gene Glen when he romances Christina Gabriel in an illegal smoking joint. When Christina reveals that she has a child, Monica, Gene arranges to meet up with the mother and daughter, and tries to convince them to follow him to a location across the ocean (possibly a ruse).

Meanwhile, Dice follows Gene around, unable to find any information on him.

When Monica refuses to leave Judoh with her mother, Gene lures Christina to a boat where 9 other women are held captive, fully intending to kill her and the other women in order to commit identity fraud.

However, Dice and J come to the aid of the captive women, neutralizing Gene and the five nobodies helping him.

Heinousness?

The city of Judoh is a Crapsaccharine World, a seemingly shining city with regular gang/mob violence, and other forms of violence as well.

Clair Leonelli, the local "Vampire" (crime boss), has been known to throw grenades at random and endanger people while doing so. He has been involved in violence between himself and other mobsters. Clair also once captured a Celestial, nearly leading to the city being shut down, risking numerous lives. He has also damaged the urban landscape before with explosives, admittedly causing less destruction than Kobayashi, but he is not hoping to kill people to the same extent as Kobayashi, and he has more resources. He eventually joins forces with Daisuke after being betrayed by other associates.

Shun Aurora is a bureaucrat who tries to start a revolution, which causes a number of deaths and regional instability, but he also has more resources than Kobayashi.

Senator Noriega is behind a number of deaths but has more resources, and fails to stand out next to other mobsters.

A rogue AI battleship tries to shell a skyscraper, but lacks moral agency.

Samuel Kobayashi is a serial bomber who has a triple digit body count and next to nothing for resources.

Gene has a small onscreen attempted body count, but he still ostensibly carves a niche for himself due to the fact that he has women killed en masse in order to steal their identities, and that the ten women who are currently captive are not the first.

Mitigating factors.

Offscreen villainy, personality and motive are not as much of a problem here as they were with Kobayashi.

Gene is shown to hold at least 10 captive women at a time and makes plain his intent to kill them and throw them in the water.

Gene predends to be kind and considerate, but is in fact smug, greedy, and petty.

Verdict?

Worthy of discussion.

[down] Most of the potentials are too smug or too crazy, although someone else may pick up on something I did not.
