Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[tup] to the Bandit Leader and Manuel Roba.

[tdown] to Sato and Jack the Ripper (this version was definitely discussed and disqualified before; I'm sure of it).

[tdown] to Sato and as much as I hate to say it [tdown] to Jack.

However [tup] to Bandit Leader and a big [tup] to Eric Cart... I mean Gorman.

Regarding the Dr. Gedouin quote, I think the second one works because he flat out admits that he performs unethical experiments and enjoys it.

Also, I was wondering if Dio Brando still qualified. While Dio is no doubt a vile bastard, he does have one redeeming trait: he did love his mother, and one of the reasons he was glad his father died was because it was implied that he caused her death. Now, I'm not sure if having an abusive father counts as a Freudian Excuse since they later say that apparently, Dio was evil from birth, so I'm not sure about that one.

Oh, that one is long extinguished. Dio doesn't cre about his mother at all anymore in present times, and not after he turns into a vampire

  • The Black Cobra: The Big Bad of this Blaxploitation piece is the unnamed leader of a biker gang who rape and murder their way through the local area For the Evulz. After a photographer witnesses a murder they commit and photographs the leader, he decides to kill her and steal the pictures, killing anybody in the way. To infiltrate the hospital they're staying in, the leader drags some random guy through a road by his bike to kill him and use his blood to make one of the goons look injured. The leader learns that the pictures are useless due to the flashbulb being too close, he decides to continue his assault, and kidnaps the police chief's daughter. When the film's heroes attack the gang to rescue her, the leader leaves his men to be captured or killed.

Since it's been two weeks, I will now inform everyone that no one in Sister's Location counts. While the killer is finally given a name and identity 9William Afton is canon, and he created the animatronics), he does not show up in the game aside from a voice over at the beginning, and he still has no real personality despite us finally hearing him speak. The animatronics can speak this time around, and the group does have a leader in Baby, but she's a Woobi Destroyer Of Worlds.

As for Afton, let's not forget the implications his own daughter was murdered by the machines he built... that leaves some room for tragedy.

I've got some Joker rewrites on the grill, by the by, for two of the animated films... they could use some expansion.

  • Batman: Under the Red Hood: The Joker once again defines himself as an Ax-Crazy lunatic. Joker opens up the film by brutally beating the young Jason Todd, the second Robin, to a bloody pulp with a crowbar, before leaving him to die in an explosion he sets off. After Joker is released by a reluctant Black Mask from Arkham Asylum, Joker demonstrates his random violence by slitting the throat of one of his guards and shooting the other four dead, and soon after backstabs Black Mask by gagging him and the members of both his and Red Hood's gang, intending to burn them all alive for the purpose of getting the Red Hood's attention. Once it's revealed Red Hood is in fact a resurrected Jason Todd and Batman turns the tides against Red Hood in the final confrontation, Joker tries to pin Batman down for the purpose of dying with both his arch-rival and Red Hood in an exploding building, absolutely ecstatic that he gets to die getting everything he wants. Even the hardened kingpin Black Mask is wary of the Joker and Batman himself reveals he contemplates killing the Joker every day of his life for the clown's atrocities, only relenting to prevent himself from becoming just like those he opposes. As true to his darker interpretations, the Joker was a psychopath motivated by random whims at best and a desire to hurt Batman at worst.

  • Batman: The Dark Knight Returns: After having gone into unresponsive catatonia for a decade, The Joker returns to his old habits after the return of Batman to Gotham. Joker begins his rampage by cutting the throat of his therapist and proceeding to fatally gas the entirety of a talk show audience with his Joker toxins, causing them to die a slow death as they laugh themselves to death. To goad Batman into coming after him, Joker continues his rampage into an amusement park, commanding one of his robotic dolls to blow itself up in the tracks of a rollercoaster as a distraction, attempting to use a young child as a human shield, murdering a cop for his gun, and eventually devolving to randomly shooting innocents in his way while cackling. After Batman snaps his neck and paralyzes him, the Joker tries to pressure Batman into killing him, and when that fails, the Joker defiantly snaps his own neck the rest of the way anyways and dies with a wide smile on his face with the intent to frame Batman for his own death, proclaiming he'll meet Batman in Hell. Even in old age, the Joker is still a master of murderous acts meant primarily to amuse himself and is motivated by his twisted obsession with his eternal arch-rival, dying with pride that he drove Batman off the edge.

The final novel in the long running Legend of Drizzt saga is coming out very soon, so I'm going to do some retrospective efforts post on some villains in the series I think might count. While I'm not sure if any of these character truly count, I'm only going to propose characters that match or surpass current entry Vendes Baenre. My first candidate is Matron Mother Malice Do'Urden.

Who is she?

As the Evil Matriarch of House Do'Urden, the Starter Villain of the saga, and the mother of our protagonist Drizzt, she serves as our grizzly introduction to Drow society.

What has she done?

The first chapter of the first (chronological) book has her overseeing an attack on rival House De Vir while in the middle of childbirth. As per Drow tradition, she intends on sacrificing the newborn Drizzt to Lolth to ensure victory. Only the murder of her firstborn son by her second born son stops her from sticking a dagger in Drizzt's heart. She goes out of her way to ensure the complete destruction of the rival house by ordering her soldiers to butcher every member down to the children. She also makes a deal with the sorcerer Gel'roos Hunnett to murder his apprentice Alton De Vir to tie up loose ends.

As Drizzt grows up, she goes to any length to corrupt him into being as evil as the other Drow. Once she sees that his beloved father Zaknafein is trying to teach him actual morals, she magically disguises a goblin slave as a Drow and orders Drizzt to spar with it. The goblin in no match and Drizzt is tricked into thinking he murdered another Drow. In an effort to educate Drizzt as to what it means to be Drow, she takes him to see an entire House get butchered by demons for falling out of Lolth's favor and later threatens him with the tortured existence of the drider if he ever displeases her or Lolth.

Later when Drizzt is an adult, she sends him on a surface raid to kill other elves on a pain of death if he fails. While at first elated when she believes he murdered an elven child, she is enraged when she discovers he did not while spying on Drizzt and Zaknafein. In a final effort to break Drizzt's spirit, she sacrifices Zaknafein in Drizzt's place, but he finally rebels and flees into the Underdark. She spends the next decade ruthlessly and relentlessly trying to hunt down Drizzt and make him pay for betraying their family.

In an ultimate act of defilement, she invokes the rite of Zin-Carla on Zaknafein's corpse. This ritual binds Zaknafein's mind and soul into his undead body while Malice is in complete control. As a test run, she has Zaknafein murder her current lover Rizzen simply because she was bored with him, and sends Zak off on a hunt for Drizzt. While on the hunt, she sates her blood lust by using Zaknafein to murder anyone he comes across whether they are involved with Drizzt or not. When she finally catches up to Drizzt, she taunts him over his failure to save Zaknafein and that she will enjoy forcing him to murder his beloved son. Drizzt barely defeats Zak long enough for him to regain control and commit suicide. Malice completely loses all favor with Lolth and is killed by her eldest daughter shortly before the rest of House Do'Urden is purged.

Any mitigating factors?

Malice has no redeeming qualities to speak off and shows no true love for any of her family. The only thing that could stop her qualifying is whether she meets the heinous standard set by Drow society in general. Her near murder of her newborn son and the annihilation of rival houses is standard for Drow nobles, but something has to be said for the sheer personal evils she commits in trying to break Drizzt. Binding his father's consciousness and forcing it to hunt and kill Drizzt is far beyond the evil we see from most villains in the series.

Final Verdict?

She is not responsible for the deaths of thousands like Yvonnel Baenre or Arklem Greeth, but she more than matches Vendes Baenre is her actions and on par with Herzgo Alegni in how evil their deeds are on a personal level. Ultimately, it's up to you guys whether or not she makes the cut.

@ Scraggle: tragic for her, not for him. Losing a loved one served him right. I do agree that him potentially caring for her is a disqualifier though.

[up] That's a bizarre form of interpreting karmic justice and I don't think the death on someone's loved one is deserved in the least (especially given as those kinds of characters are almost invariably a Morality Pet for the evildoer in question). Regardless, I still feel FNAF's story here is a little too vague and speculative for any solid candidates, Ennard included, and Afton's no closer to counting than he was in the first few games, likely even further away from doing so due to these potential mitigating factors.

[down] No telling when that will come out, though.

About these quotes:

Milo: You don't know what you're tampering with, Rourke!
Rourke: What's to know? It's big, it's shiny, it's going to make us ALL rich.
Milo: You think it's some kind of a diamond, I thought it was some kind of a battery, but we're BOTH wrong. It's their LIFE FORCE. Their crystal is the only thing keeping these people alive. You take that away and they'll die!
Rourke: Well...that changes things. Helga, what do you think?
Helga: Knowing that...I double the price.
Rourke: (proudly) I was thinking triple.
Commander Lyle Tiberius Rourke showing his willingness to kill the Atlanteans to get rich, Atlantis The Lost Empire

Andy: I don't suppose it would make any difference if I explained to them I'm not a homosexual.
Red: Neither are they. You have to be human to qualify.
Andy and Red about Bogs and the Sisters in The Shawshank Redemption

The first one fails to show Rourke stand out worse then Helga, who falls short of CM. The second lacks the context to explain show there evilness.

Cut?

  • Modern Warfare 2: Ghost: In this comic book prequel miniseries, Manuel "El Gordo" Roba is the leader of the Zaragoza Drug Cartel. A target to the United States due to his drug and terrorist smuggling activities, Simon Riley was sent alongside a US squad to kill him. The squad was betrayed by their leader Vernon to Roba, who proceeds to subject the squad to months of brutal brainwashing, torturing them under drug-induced insomnia and forcing them to fight each other, uncaring if they die or not since Roba considers all men to be expendable. In one case, Roba hanged Riley from a tree from hooks in his waist because he displays resistance. Roba kills the annoying Vernon and buries the unturning Riley alive with his corpse. When Riley escapes, Roba sent his successfully brainwashed soldiers to take care of him. Under Roba's orders, they were sent to UK where they murdered everyone associated with Riley, including his family, his shrink and his superior, before framing all the murders on Riley to ruin his life completely.

By the way, if we really do create a Call of Duty CM subpage, I recommend the page image to be Makarov shooting up the airport in No Russian, since it is easily one of the most notable Moral Event Horizons in video game history.
