Old Magnificent Bastard thread

Welcome to the Magnificent Bastard proposal thread! This is the thread where new Magnificent Bastard examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential mitigating features will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the MB subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite MB" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from other parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for MB equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, their goals and methodology, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some characters, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

How are they Magnificent?

This is the point where you highlight the character's brilliance. How to they convey their intelligence and charm to the audience? What makes them stand out among the crowd? What are their goals and how do they go about accomplishing them? This part welcomes a lot of creative thinking — not everyone has to be a Machiavellian Diabolical Mastermind to be worth considering here! This is also the time to showcase how the character can think on their feet if it's necessary.

How are they a Bastard? How are they not too bad?

What kinds of moral lines is this character willing to cross for the sake of their goal? Are they willing to let innocents die? Start wars? Commit crimes? The character has to show some kind of unscrupulousness in order to count as a "Bastard". Notably, this character does not necessarily have to be the villain, and an Anti-Hero can cross the line if they're immoral enough, but they have to be immoral somehow.

This is also the section where you then state your case for why they're not too bad. Perhaps their good intentions help mitigate their crimes. Perhaps others are shown to be much worse than them. Perhaps they're prone to Pet the Dog moments or are even fighting on behalf of loved ones. Whatever the case, there are certain lines that an MB can't cross, but as long as their villainy is reasonable for their goal, they can be considered.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

So Teare's looks to be a bust. Well, good thing I've got an easier candidate from what's quite possibly one of the worst film trilogies of all time. And no, I don't put that lightly.

What’s the Work?

The Cross trilogy, comprised of 2011's Cross, 2017's Cross Wars, and 2019's Cross: Rise of the Villains are a trilogy of No Budget vanity projects from the mind of Patrick Durham that have somehow managed to get some well-known B actors despite their meager budgets and terrible scripts. Sets are comprised of abandoned buildings, warehouses, and the desert, while many actors phone in their performances, almost literally at times.

Supposedly set in the greatest comic series of all time, which apparently are so awesome and valuable that people will literally bend reality to make sure the heroes from the comic survive (whereas in real life they'd all get special episodes on Atop the Fourth Wall), the movies follow Cross, a team of mercenary vigilantes that do their best to protect L.A. from villainy. The team's led by Callan, a really basic guy who carries a special amulet that his father passed down to him, which grants him powers. By powers I mean shitty laser and fireball effects.

But out of all the villains encountered in this trilogy, there's only one that actually manages to not suck.

Who is He?

Gunnar (played by Vinnie Jones) is an immortal viking and the overarching villain of the trilogy who longs for death.

What does he do?

Cursed to live until he’s the final human on Earth, Gunnar spends his time in the first movie seeking the staff of Sekhmet so that he can use it to wipe out all life on Earth in order to break his curse.

Having been through more pain and suffering than anybody, including losing his family, Gunnar promises crime boss Erlik money and immortality to help him acquire the blood from several women with ties to the staff's previous owners to activate it's power. When the staff's almost charged up, Gunnar betrays Erlik by tricking him and one of his goons into shooting him—since bullets do nothing to an immortal—just to distract them long enough to kill the goon and tie up Erlik. Gunnar’s able to use his powers of super speed (which he never uses again) to steal Callan’s amulet, preventing him from using his powers. Gunnar brings the kidnapped women with him to a rooftop once the staff’s filled up, having one of the women possessed to be able to read the summoning book needed to activate the staff’s full power.

But Gunnar reveals that he lured Callan specifically with the kidnapped women because his blood is the catalyst to activating the staff’s power, even having Callan kill his own goons so that their dead souls can power the staff as well. But even when Callan’s able to destroy the staff and reacquire his amulet, Gunnar remains as cheerfully confident as ever, curious as to how Cross will be able to somehow kill him... only for Callan to fire a laser beam that evaporates him.

Gunnar somehow returns in the second movie after being supposedly dead. Revealing to have been working with the evil Dr. Conrad since the first film, Gunnar hopes to once again rid the world of all life with Conrad’s new machine, which will wipe out every living organism in the universe. Gunnar hopes to use Callan's new girlfriend Riley’s magic amulet to power his machine, and kidnaps her to lure Callan into a trap to enact his revenge.

With Conrad’s help, Gunnar has Callan give himself up to save Riley, hooking the two up to the machine in order to be the first ones to go when it activates. The machine's turned on, and it seems as though nothing can stop Gunnar from achieving his goals... except Callan finds out he can rewind time by combining his and Riley’s amulets together. As a result, Gunnar’s defeated and sentenced to Cross jail, or whatever it's called, but not without promising he'll return.

Returning in the third movie for what's ultimately a glorified cameo, Gunnar teams up with Callan to stop the villainous Drago and Muerte from destroying Los Angeles with the promise of finally killing him and lifting the curse. Gunnar’s able to use his immortality to distract Drago long enough for Callan to defeat him, then allows Callan to blast him with a green laser, killing him for good. It's a really pointless role, as if they had Vinnie Jones for a day of shooting and couldn't think of what to do with him.

Now apparently there's talks of a Cross 4, with Jones set to reprise his role, but who fucking knows when that inevitable turd's gonna come out.

Is he charming? Intelligent? Able to think on his feet?

Gunnar's probably the only fun character in the movie, with Vinnie Jones playing him with such charisma that it makes him a joy to watch. Gunnar displays expertise manipulation skills as he fools even hardened criminals into working for him, and has come very close to succeeding on numerous occasions.

Gunnar even takes all of his loses in stride, confident that he'll come out on top next time.

Is he a bastard? Too much of one?

Despite wanting to end all life on Earth on numerous occasions, plus his willingness to betray those who work for him, or toss aside those he no longer values after having no more use for them, Gunnar's portrayed as an Anti-Villain who wants to die because of all the pain he's been through as an immortal, such as losing his family. He even has some standards, like when he kills a guy for not being nice to the captive Riley, so at least he's kind of a gentleman. Kind of.

He may be an omnicidal bad guy, but compared to the likes of Conrad, Muerte, and even the third film's Drago, all of whom being jokey sadists who want to wipe out millions/billions of people for the lulz, Gunnar looks like a saint in comparison, as he at least has an excuse for what he does.

Verdict?

I say Gunnar keeps

I remember now: it was whether or not Roz and/or Hardscrabble each deserved a spot on the trope or not.

Speaking of Disney, I also want to give this a shot just to see what happens whether or not the result is successful:

  • Work: Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves—released directly to video in 1997, third and final film in the series, final movie Rick Moranis starred in before mostly retiring from acting as well:
  • Who/What: The Tiki Man is the wood statue of a Polynesian god that Wayne Szalinski bought for fun:
    • and Wayne expresses gratitude to him for good things that happen
    • as well as tells him not to worry when Wayne's wife Diane wants to get rid of him for being an eye sore that takes up too much space.
    • This results in Wayne violating the shrink machine ban to be able to shrink the Tiki Man down to an inconspicuous size
    • —but then also causes Wayne along with Diane, Wayne's brother Gordon and Gordon's wife Patty to all be shrunk too as a result
    • and forced to venture through the house to find a means to return to their normal sizes.
    • Once the adults have worked out personal issues both among themselves and with the kids,
    • the kids use the machine to restore all four adults and the Tiki Man to full size again
    • and Diane encourages Wayne to keep him if he wants to
    • —resulting in an enlarged Tiki Man towering over the house in the backyard.
  • Additional Information: The Tiki Man gives a surprised expression in what's clearly meant to be cartoonish for a kids movie when being shrunk, the billiard balls falling on and activating the machine when no one's there happens with Wayne and Gordon when they're looking for the Tiki Man after that and the circumstance itself in which Wayne says he's saving the Tiki Man brings both that to fruition as well—and when Diane and Patty hear the machine and go upstairs to become targets too.
  • Magnificent: The Tiki Man is treated like a sentient entity by Wayne who credits him for his good luck, inspires Wayne's actions to try to save him by shrinking him and is ultimately the crux of the plot and its conclusion as well.
  • Bastard/Too Much: The Tiki Man being threatened by Diane and Wayne violating the shrink machine ban put forth by the FDA—and Diane as well—results in the others being shrunk along with him and may be Disproportionate Retribution too, but the plot eventually resolves itself with everyone learning their lessons and everyone including him being restored to full size and Wayne gets to keep him and have him displaced in an incredibly prominent and triumphant manner right when the movie's concluded.
  • Verdict: Maybe a [tup]? It was at least worth a try. It was an interesting test as to whether or not he succeeds or fails the criteria either way.

Preemptive writeup:

  • Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves: The Tiki Man is the wood statue of a Polynesian god that Wayne Szalinski bought for fun and Wayne expresses gratitude to him for good things that happen as well as tells him not to worry when Wayne's wife Diane wants to get rid of him for being an eye sore that takes up too much space. Plank's a no from me. Even granting that he has the right personality, which is pushing it given the surface-level lack thereof, he has enough undignified moments, such as being used for walking the plank, and not enough to offset those things (plus not being separate enough from Johnny).

Tiki Doll I'm gonna lean towards a no as well. Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane, but personality does matter and an inanimate object can only have so much. More likely to change my mind on this one, though.

Hespera is the eldest daughter of Atlas, seeking to bring him to life and return their collective magic from humans. Her plans start out flawlessly, collecting the necessary staff, getting it repaired, allowing Kalypso to use torture, and killing those in the way. After kidnapping Freddy on threat of his life, she Out-Gambits the heroes' plot to take her in a hostage exchange by breaking the lock on her prison and leaving with the Apple of Discord to revive Atlas. In Contrast to Kalypso's Revenge Before Reason against humans, Hespera pushes to plant the apple in their own realm, and though killed by Kalypso for this reason, when revived, she shows respect for Shazam and plays a key role in saving Earth before a dignified death.
^ Think I hit the mark on this one? Feels like there's room for improvement, but not sure where.

@ANonagon9 It's good. Not sure how I'd add or take away from it otherwise except throw in a bit about showing Shazam respect in her final moments too.

A few times the Tiki Man's face is given focus as well despite the otherwise unchanged expression: when Wayne says he'll think of a way to keep him, when Wayne's telling Gordon the plan, when Diane is shrunk and discovers why Wayne violated her wishes—and the FDA's—and when the Tiki Man towers over everything in the final shot of the movie. Hope those things help too.

There are other times when they're emphasizing his role in the scene, but they're much smaller moments though—aside from obviously being shown to be unshrunk along with the others as I mentioned before.

Yea to Gunman. No to the Tiki man. My issue with the likes of this and the plank compared to Ghost!Billy are that there’s no real character presented to the audience to the degree that I’d like. The plank for instance may exist in a character’s head but they’re reiterating everything to us. Billy by contrast still gets his own “character” which full on talks and interacts with Sam and the audience.

@43 Yeah. I mean I rolled the dice. I personally see the character myself, but you're right that it's nowhere near as blatant and clear as Dark Passenger Billy who even if just in Sam's mind is given distinguishable independence in spite of that. SHRUG.

On CM, even though Michael Myers never talks—and wears an emotionless mask most of the time too, his character and his actions are both often very pronounced despite that.

Anybody got an answer to my question before the EP by the way? About the Monsters Inc. characters?

Has Nanny McPhee been brought up on this thread yet? Because upon rewatching the first film not to long ago, I feel like the titular Magical Nanny (literally, in her case) might just have a shot of possibly being a Magnificent Bitch. While she's technically meant to be a heroine... in her own unique way, she still fits in the "bitch" part just enough for consideration, considering her Trickster Mentor policies, as well the fact that she's placed the kids she supervises in mortal danger several times and uses their bad habits against them, just for the sake of teaching a lesson. Not to mention her mostly stoic demeanor. I know this is a fantasy and all, but Jesus Christ! Not exactly the kind of lady you'd want for a nanny. I completely forgot just how disturbing the film could be.

[down][down][down]Yeah... not really eager to watch this film again any time soon.

Alright, I'm just going to get it out and say it: I don't like this movie... especially the parts near the ending.

@43 I was asking about whether or not Roz and/or Hardscramble could count. Also, I usually pothole Dark Passenger with Dexter and I figured people probably knew what I was talking about by now.

And here's Nadakhan's first mate!

Who is Flintlocke?

An experienced gunslinger and the second in command of the crew of Misfortune's Keep, Flintlocke loyally serves his captain in personally managing the crew on his behalf. As I covered last time, the crew of the Keep were eventually defeated and banished to different realms... until, some centuries later, Nadakhan escapes his prison and finds a way to summon them all back (time moves weird between dimensions, so they're all still alive). Flintlocke is with his captain when they witness Djinjago's destruction and agrees to help him rebuild his homeland, intent on creating a new world for the pirates to finally settle down in.

Flintlocke, as first mate, is the one to personally oversee their crew in converting the Keep into an airship, adapting to advancements in modern technology to not only turn it into a flying fortress but also begin work on an entire fleet to pillage the world from the skies. He's also the one Nadakhan turns to for advice—when the djinn fails to steal Jay's soul, Flintlocke proposes they use their fledgling army to launch a massive attack on a city, which allows Nadakhan to isolate another of the ninja and take their soul in the midst of the chaos.

The djinn also manages to capture Jay, forcing him to do menial labor across the ship and subjecting him to fight rings with the other pirates in an effort to psychologically break him and get him to "wish it all away" with his third and final wish (at this point the ninja haven't realized Nadakhan has to grant any wish he hears, even ones detrimental to him, and in any case Jay knows he'll just use Exact Words bullshit to twist it against him). At this point in time, Jay tries to warn Flintlocke about Nadakhan's true intentions—he doesn't care about giving the pirates a home, he just wants infinite wishes for himself from marrying Nya. Flintlocke initially doesn't believe him—even briefly pretending he does just to grind Jay down more, tricking him into what he thinks is a coup against the captain but is really just another fight ring. But as Nadakhan starts getting more frustrated and impatient, he starts catching on.

...Unfortunately, by the time he plans a real coup, it's after one of the ninja, realizing the "has to grant every wish he hears" thing, has wished for Flintlocke to suddenly become a shit shot. Nadakhan demotes him to swabbie for his troubles. Fast-forward to Nadakhan receiving omnipotence and beginning to banish the crew back to the other realms, and Flintlocke is able to quietly sneak away in the chaos with another of the pirates, Dogshank. The djinn sends mooks after them, but while Flintlocke can't shoot for shit anymore, his aim is still perfect, and he aims Dogshank in taking them out with a precise shot on a land mine.

The two meet up with the ninja and agree to help them out, with the ninja helping undo the wish laid on him by... uh, getting him to believe in himself or something. As the ninja go to fight the djinn, Flintlocke takes up a sniper position from afar, successfully wounding his distracted former captain with a venom capable of temporarily depowering him. And also gets some on Nya, who has a bit more of a lethal reaction. To undo this, Jay uses his last wish to prevent Nadakhan from ever escaping his prison in the first place, stopping his terrible reign but returning all the pirates, Flintlocke and Dogshank included, to their own prisons.

...Until, in the new timeline, Clouse frees them to act his minions, but they're mostly just muscle who don't do anything important. And, in any case, technically different characters who don't remember any of the above, so... *shrugs*

Mitigating qualities?

Honestly one of my favorite characters. A suave, awesome gunslinger who constantly serves as the voice of reason among the sky pirates, coming up with several smart plays and one of the driving forces behind their evolution into sky pirates. It takes him a while, but he's also the first to clue into the fact that Nadakhan's just using them, and while his first plan to beat him goes poorly, his second works out perfectly, as he's ultimately the one to finally take the djinn out.

  • Agent Elvis: Elvis Presley himself, famous rockstar beloved by all, moonlights as a badass, crime fighting Vigilante Man with a massive body count of crooks and drug dealers left in his wake. Always suave yet ruthless when fighting or interrogating criminals, Elvis is recruited into The Central Bureau to protect the world from greater threats, nonchalantly carving a bloody path to safety and freedom for the unsuspecting innocents of the nation. The King's ingenuity and skills prove to be the saving grace of TCB in countless situations, from preventing Las Vegas from being nuked to stopping Nixon from learning of the organization's existence, even as he works behind the scenes to uncover his forgotten, tortuous past in their employ. Nonetheless dedicated to saving the world even after discovering the dark truth, Elvis prevents Malus and his hated rival Goulet from murdering millions before he sacrifices himself to save his friends' lives, proving once and for all the awesomeness of the King of Rock and Roll as he faces seemingly certain death with nothing but a confident smile.

[up][up]Not sure what other suggestions I could provide. Unless anybody else has some, you're probably welcome to send it to the drafts. I got a placeholder over in the sandbox in the DCEU tree for you too.

You need a placeholder in the drafts too?

Easy [tup] to Flintlocke.

Well, Seems Plank was a bust. Meh, you win some, you lose some.

At least I will have much better luck when I propose Spike Spiege-

Is crucified.

...well shit, but at least Keene Milton is gonna be an easy keeper!

The cross is set on fire.
