Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

Should the literature version mention that it's more implied than the film that they're serial rapists?

(Also, how is evil hillbilly not a trope? I guess I'll use Hillbilly Horrors.)

[up][up][up][up][up]I haven't yet played the last few books from The Royal Romance (I'm somewhere midway through Heir), but the earlier entries' villains, even the nastier ones, IMHO, aren't quite up to the heinousness standard.

[up] Sounds good!

Ok, my first from The Sarah Jane Adventures! With thanks to Wet for the collab, lemme start with the worst of my batch. Hailing from the two parter "Goodbye, Sarah Jane Smith":

Who is Ruby White? What has she done?

  • Introduced as an apparent hero to rival Sarah Jane, Ruby White is revealed to be a vile member of the Qetesh, a group of aliens capable of eating the emotions of others. So horrible that her own race banished her for her villainy, Ruby turned her portable-prison into a spaceship with enough maneuverability to traverse the galaxy...and gorge herself.
  • Ruby's MO is made clear: she shows up at a planet, uses her illusion technology to terrorize the world, and gorges on the mass suffering and terror of the populace until she finally wipes it of all life. Ruby shows up on Earth and presents herself as a hero to take Sarah Jane's place, but soon enough reveals her true nature as she painfully feeds on Sarah's feelings of inadequacy and leaves her chained in a basement, forced to watch through a monitor as Ruby turns her loved ones against her to feed on her torment.
  • Trapping Clyde in her former prison ship to slowly kill him from lack of oxygen, Ruby reveals her plan to take Sarah Jane's place as the world's "protector"...but invert the role so that she helps aliens ruin the world one continent at a time so she can feed on the mass suffering until she finally destroys the planet and continues her spree.
Ruby: "They want all the water? Go ahead, drink up. Mineral wealth? That way. Colonise? Pick a continent!"
    Sarah: "You'll destroy the planet!"
Ruby: "Eventually, yes. But what an exciting time humanity will have! And I will feed on every drop of their terror and despair.''"
  • Luckily our heroes outthink Ruby and save Sarah, then overwhelm Ruby's capacity to consume emotions and leave her powerless. Ruby is then forced back into her prison ship, reduced to a proper cell, and is last seen drifting through space...heading straight for the sun.

Mitigating features?

She's an Emotion Eater Qetesh but she was considered horrible by her own people and locked away, and though when she's finally beaten she whines "But my hunger, I need to feed! I can't help the way that I am!", Sarah Jane immediately points out "Yeah, but you don't have to enjoy it so much." and the kids call it out as a trick anyway. She's a cruel sadist about the whole thing and she by no means has to feed.

Heinousness?

Her plan for Earth is a nasty one as she hopes to helps various villainous aliens terrorize, kill and decimate swathes of the planet so she can soak up the mass suffering, and she indicates it's a regular occurrence and there are many worlds out there "No longer with us." because of her machinations.

Final Verdict?

Keep!

A CM Effortpost from a character of a fanfic I read.

What is the work?

All Worlds Alliance is a series of Massive Multiplayer Crossover stories written by someonestupED. Comprising of several stories including the Prologue book, the Missions series and the Stories, it focuses on an Ensemble Cast of various heroes as they venture across the multiverse and stomp out the forces of chaos before they can wreak havoc.

Who is he?

Nemeth is a minor antagonist in the All Worlds Alliance fanfic series. He is the Arc Villain of AWA Stories, serving as the main antagonist of Chapter 43. He is a former member of the Apostles of the New World, a villainous faction, before breaking away from them to pursue his own goals. He is a ruthless elf slaver, whose purely white motif doesn't deter him from the monster he is. He is responsible for enslaving countless heroes around the multiverse, with the very intention of selling them to various shady people for a very high price, with one of the clienteles included the Mad Scientist Silas Moron. He later made a name for himself when he creates the Slave Fortress, a slave prison located in the heart of North Bihag Zone, imprisoning the remaining hero prisoners in his possession after selling the others to his various clienteles.

However, when the AWA later broke into his fortress, he quickly ordered his soldiers to deal with the invading AWA forces, but his men found themselves quickly outmatched by the AWA's sheer might, leaving him to be the sole survivor. But unfortunately for him, his former compatriot Damascus broke into his office, before he was knocked out by him, which put an end to his terror once and for all. A group of Marines and Plumbers imprisoned Nemeth into Impel Down for his crimes.

With his operations exposed, it was far from over for the AWA, when Damascus and his friend Deidara gave Max Tennyson the list of slaves Nemeth sold in the past few months, with Max being clearly in shock when it turned out that this is only the FIRST paper of slaves Nemeth sold. With Nemeth's imprisonment, the AWA are now faced with a bigger goal due to his actions: rescuing these prisoners at the hands of other people that Nemeth made trades with.

Heinous Standards?

For sure the AWA fanfic is known for several villains who attempt to invade other worlds in their goal to cause chaos across the Multiverse, which is commonplace in an MMC fic like AWA. But for Nemeth? He's truly a piece of work to begin with even for an ex-Apostle member, since he's on another level of heinousness. He's responsible for enslaving countless heroes, no other villain in the fanfic did, across the multiverse, so whatever heroes he captured he deems valuable he trades them to shady assholes for money, which is clearly a much worse fate than death. And the effects of his slavery are also on-screen, since there are several prisoners like the ones seen in Slave Fortress in Chapter 43, the very first time hero prisoners are mentioned and explicitly seen in this fic. To put that into perspective, the AWA heroes sent there clearly see that the prisoners are suffering from being weakened by the strength-draining chokers Nemeth put on them, which drained them of their strength, so it's obvious that he is slowly weakening them to death. Plus, the people he enslaved with also included literal children (including Tina Sprout, Enju Aihara, Geo Stelar, etc.) and elderly (including Carl Fredericksen), thus showing that his depravity and cruelty clearly knows no bounds.

His actions cause a major Cerebus Syndrome to the series, since prior to that said chapter the heroes simply deal with invading villains from various worlds, but unearthing Nemeth's slave operations is an entirely different herd of villainy in this fic, considering how Max read only the first paper of Nemeth's list of slaves he sold to various people, which takes a disturbing turn that even disturbed the legendary Plumber. In short, even after his imprisonment from Impel Down, it is clear that his shadow still lingers in the next few chapters in other stories, post-Chapter 43 of AWA Stories since other slavers like Silas Moron in AWA Stories Chapter 50 have benefitted from Nemeth's slave operations to use them as Living Batteries for his ship. And his actions have clearly left a mark on the other ex-prisoners and AWA in general.

Freudian Excuse?

Hell no. Nemeth is a complete piece of trash to begin with, who has no redeeming values whatsoever. To put that in perspective, he's so much of a colossal Hate Sink Dirty Coward that nobody sheds a tear once Damascus, his former Apostle compatriot and also an ex-Apostle member, knocks him out cold. Even the series' Big Bad, Chikage Tachibana, never resorted to this form of heinous crime, despite being the obvious menace to Chizuru. And him getting imprisoned in Impel Down by the Plumbers and Marines is a perfect example of a comeuppance of getting away from his crime for god knows how long.

Verdict

Tentative yes.

Will review these wonderful effort posts later but for now here's Patchett. The horror duo to come.

  • L.A. Confidential & Perfidia: Pierce Morehouse Patchett uses his public persona as an eccentric, successful businessman to mask his crimes. Covering up a series of murders of children by the insane son of a media mogul, Patchett also withholds knowledge of Japanese attacks during World War II, including Pearl Harbor, so the festering prejudice will allow him to purchase Japanese-American owned properties cheap. With his Fleur-de-Lis prostitution ring, Patchett pimps to wealthy associates, even having young boys and girls pose in sexual photos for his depraved clients. Patchett also uses his background in chemistry to modify heroin stolen from Mickey Cohen and create more potent batches to flood the streets and even modifies some doses to have his partner overcome police truth serum. Batches of his new concoctions are tested on one of his runners and when the man fails to kill an investigating police officer, Patchett tortures him by injecting him with a series of bad strains.

There will be more to come from this series and tbh the page is gonna take some creativity if it gets to that point as Ellroy hasn't named the overarching series between the first and second LA Quartet... complicating things further is it shares a world with the Underworld U.S.A. series that doesn't have a page.

[tup]Texas Red, Rasputin (Lover of the Russian Queen). Griffith, Jolson, Azura, Ruby White, Nemeth.

Some days ago I was browsing to random discussions linked in the Former Complete Monsters page for fun and I think I might have actually come across a keeper in the process.

What's the Work?

Out There (link) is a crossover fanfic between Descendants and The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Disney) which also acts as a sort of a Deconstruction Fic for Descendants. The story follows Quasimodo's son Matthew "Matt" Q. who during his senior year at Auradon Prepp he has to add to his list of problems-such as a crippling shyness and having a homosexual crush on Prince Ben while living in a society that is largely homophobic-the arrival of the rather suspicious and unstable son of his father's arch-nemesis into the school.

Who is the candidate? What has he done?

As you would expect from a Hunchback fanfic, the candidate is our old pal Judge Claude Frollo, now just yet another prisoner in the Isle of the Lost.

Even years before the story, Frollo managed to kill three guards and briefly escape the Isle and used a curse to nearly burnt Matt-who back then was only 10-years-old-to death in front of his dad and send his soul to Tartarus itself; Frollo was put in solitary confinement as result, but the boy was left permanently scarred both physically and psychologically.

As previously mentioned, Frollo, like most villains, had conceived a son in the Isle, Frank, however, unlike most villains who seem to care for their children in their own twisted ways, Frollo is just as psychologically abusive with him as he was with Quasimodo, with Frollo keeping him trapped in a trapdoor for most of his life as well, successfully molding him to be a "cruel and psychotic", religiously insane "Well Done, Son" Guy; once Frank is 17, Claude sends him to Auradon Prep with orders to steal the powerful Merlin's Staff and bring it back to him, kickstarting the events of the fic.

Why does Frollo want the Staff anyway? Well, he keeps being the genocidal madman he always was and not only still intends to completely wipe out the Romani, but also to destroy Auradon and all of its inhabitants.

The fic was left abandoned mid-story, but last we know of Frollo he is still imprisoned on solitary confinement at the Isle.

Mitigating Factors

Frollo himself doesn't have anything redeeming about him, the only possible problem is that the fic references underage sex a few times, but it is only referenced rather than ever actually shown and the intent clearly is NOT to titillate the audience; so all things considered I don't think it's really problematic.

Is he Heinous Enough?

I would say yes, it is mentioned that the Wizard of Oz has started bloody wars against several other kingdoms such as Arendelle, but even leaving the HUGE resources difference aside that's mostly offpage.

This leaves Frank as his only competence, but while his actual killcount might be higher than Frollo's and he once sexually assaults Evie which clearly wasn't ordered to him, I'd say Frollo beats him in heinousness for sheer scope, as Frank's intended bodycount is never confirmed to be over a dozen (he mentions wanting revenge on a high number of people, but it's not clear if he necessarily means death), whereas with Frollo is outright said he plans to kill his both the Romani and most of Auradon's population, which no doubt puts his intended killcount in the thousands.

Final Verdict

Leaning [tup], what do you say?

Going against the trend and say [tdown] for Rasputin. Too much Fridge Horror. Watched the palace scene on Youtube and all that’s shown is a mob storming the palace, gunshots in the background and people running away. We don’t hear or see anyone die.

[tup] for Charlie.

About Azura: How often does she drains people? There’s a huge difference between draining one person every few years or hundred people every year. And how common are villains who start wars in the setting?

[tup] for Zartus. As I said before: The Power Rangers comics are surprisingly dark for such a lighthearted series.

[tup] for Ruby. Doctor Who has a high standard for C Ms but whipping out a whole planet with the implication of having done this before is enough.

Not sure about Nemeth. Being a slaver or selling people as slaves alone isn't enough. There still need to be some cruelty and based on the EP alone I have a hard time to tell whether or not he has done enough. How obvious is it that the chokers are weakening his prisoners to death? And whats his motivation behind this? What happens to the slave he sells? Does he personally knows what happens to them?

Oh that Frollo, always wanting to whip out minorities and being a shitty father figure. [tup]

So, it’s been two weeks since Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince comes out, and in this game there are now two CM candidates. So let’s start with the first one, Aamon

What is the work?

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince is the long awaited sequel of the Dragon Quest Monsters series which also serve as a prequel and alternate telling of Dragon Quest IV. In this game you play as Psaro who seeks to take down his father Randolfo the Tyrant who refused to save his mother from an illness and put a curse on him to unable to harm monsters. Thus Psaro becomes a monster wangler

Who is Aamon?

Aamon is the advisor of Randolfo the Tyrant. And before the event of the game, Aamon set his eye on the travelite and chronocite, crystals made by elves from the kingdom of El Zetta since the crystals have the power to warp around space and travel around time respectively.

Therefore one day he led a raid to El Zetta with his monster army, cursing many of its elf inhabitants into Stone Golems and took the crystals before dragging the entire kingdom deep underground. Aamon also had his minion Petrarch to put a spell on the Stone Golems to enslave and control them, resurrecting them when they are destroyed.

Later, Aamon watched Randolfo banishing Psaro away from Nadiria. But when Psaro get around with his curse or being unable to harm monsters by being a monster wangler and cleared Rank G of the Maullosseum, Aamon told Psaro he need to be stronger to overthrow Randolfo. He would shop up again when Psaro saved Duffer, this time convincing Psaro to seek for the power of Secret of Evolution.

Later, as Dolph the Destroyer slaughter his way through the Chosen’s village, Aamon show up to tell Psaro what makes humankind dangerous is their willingness to sacrifice themselves, thus when they united they could even threaten monsterkinds, manipulating him to destroy humanity.

To push him through the decision, Aamon has one of his Succubat minion to impersonate Rose to distract Psaro so that the real Rose will be left unguarded and killed by greedy humans. Thus Psaro snapped and used an incomplete Secret of Evolution and get his mind destroyed, being reduced to a mindless beast that destroys everything in Nadiria. But Toilen Trubble used Sand of Time to revert the timeline thus Psaro is able to save Rose on time.

Eventually, with help from Ludo Psaro and his friends reached Amon’s hideout and confronted him, after Aamon revealed that by destroying stone golems they have play a crucial role in destroying the last of El Zetta, Aamon fought them but was defeated. He then curse his defeat as he left.

Apparently still haven’t learn his lesson, Aamon headed back to Randolfo and tried to manipulate him into using the incomplete Secret of Evolution on Dolph so that he would be consumed by its power and kill Randolfo. But Randolfo saw through Aamon’s scheme and Dolph killed Aamon.

Heinous Standard

Since this game prob belongs to Zenithian trilogy timeline, there is high heinius standard. There are Ladja and Nimzo who are horrible slavers who treat their slaves terribly, Mortamor who trapped Greedmore Valley in a loop of slaughtering each other. Even in Dark Prince, there is Azabel who had destroyed half of the world by creating Estark’s. But even then? Aamon stand out for plotting the elves of El Zetta to a fate worse then death situation, which is show as a flashback onscreen. Not to mention Aamon has personally villainy on Psaro for pushing him to despair and manipulating him to transform into a mindless beast who rampaged across Nadiria. Since it is Aamon who manipulated Psaro to do so, he is responsible for the crime too. Thus he is heinous enough.

Mitigating Factors

Aamon might has a meowgician minion called Furgil who even ask Psaro to avenge his master. But their relationship is never explored. So not redeeming

Sure to Aamon

In regards to Fridge Horror with Rasputin...eh, we see the angry mob firing guns, we see dozens of people fleeing for their lives and screaming behind closed doors as gunshots go off, we learn that Anastasia's entire family was exterminated down to a 5 year old, and her grandmother further says "so many lives were destroyed". It makes it preeeeetty clear, at least IMO, that all of those people were, if not outright killed, in the crossfire and risking death, and Rasputin didn't care.

WHAT A WONDERFUL DAY!
