Cleanup thread: Magnificent Bastard

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous post
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

  • Why do a cleanup?: This trope definitely exists and has a well documented history of use. That being said, it frequently gets misused to a character who meets one of the components, namely that they are smart, charming while not necessarily even being a villain, or create good plans. While these are components, there is also a certain personality required, not to mention that all of the above are required to be present for a character to be a true Magnificent Bastard. As the trope attracts interest, it unfortunately brings in a lot of misuse and I thought the best way to rectify this would be a Perpetual Cleanup Thread, as is being done and has seen success with Complete Monster.

  • What makes a Magnificent Bastard: Below is a list of the individual components to make this character. Note that they must all be present, not just some, which has lead to frequent misuse:
    • Must be intelligent: Goes without saying, to be a Magnificent Bastard, the character has to be smart in the first place and use their brain to work towards whatever their end goal may be;
    • Must be a Bastard: While going overboard in how vile the character is can be detrimental, a key aspect is the Bastard part of the trope, whether the character is an out-and-out antagonist in the work, some manner of Villain Protagonist, or something in between, they at least have some unscrupulous qualities to qualify for this trope;
    • Must not be too detestable: Again, there is a ceiling on how bad the character can be before they just become too nefarious, blocking out the Magnificent part of the trope. A genocidal racist or child-raping Sadist aren't going to make the cut;
    • Think on their feet: In addition to being a Chessmaster, a Magnificent Bastard, if the character deals with situations in which their initial plan is ruined, has to be able to pull a Xanatos Speed Chess and at least come up with a competent strategy to make up for lost time, otherwise they fail for being unable to think in tough spots;
    • Have charm: Even if they don't necessarily make every character they meet fall in love with them and can even be detested by others, the audience has to find an amicable social relation to the character, or they are failing to make the impact required for this trope.

  • What to do if a character is listed on a page but has not been approved?: They need to be removed, all candidates need to come through the cleanup thread first. The character could well count but they need to be analyzed properly and voted on first.

  • Do we list Playing With this trope?: No; as a YMMV trope, this cannot be Played With, so we only want examples that are Played Straight.

  • What do I do if I want a character to be listed as a Magnificent Bastard?: The greatest success Complete Monster saw for its cleanup effort was from the invention of the effort post format, so, borrowing from that, a troper wishing to propose a Magnificent Bastard will create such a post in the following format:
    • Begin by describing The work, this will help establish the setting the character is in and for the reader to understand what kind of a scenario they are in;
    • Summarize The character's actions, this will provide a listing for readers to understand what they do and how it applies to this trope because charm and lack of smugness are so crucial, this is a good time to be incorporating exactly the flavor of how they operate to explain this;
    • List circumstances in which the character must Think on their feet, these are times where a wrench might be thrown in their initial plan and they have to adapt on the spot or even come up with a new scheme all together, this is also a good time to explain how the villain reacts to defeat when they have to face it, a true Magnificent Bastard won't break down into tears at the thought of death, they should have known such a possibility could occur and be able to handle it with more dignity;
    • The competition, similar to the Heinous Standard dealt with for a Complete Monster, this section is to deal with how successful the character is in carrying out their plans compared to other characters. While, as a villain, they probably are going to lose in the end, it is good to explain how other characters handle the same situation. There is no exceptionalism case to be made for this trope but explaining the variety helps the reader have a better understanding of the proposal.

  • How do you know when the character's arc is done so they can be proposed? When their tenure as a villain or antagonist finishes. This could happen in a single Story Arc in an entire work, a single work of a franchise, or the whole series in general. We'll show lenience to Long-Runners with constantly recurring candidates or series with outstanding continuities (ex. comic books), and it's entirely possible to count in a work or two but not in general for a reason like Depending on the Writer.

  • What about candidates evil because of external sources? Those Made of Evil can qualify if they show enough individuality and tactical acumen — in other words, they have the personality to fulfill the magnificence requirement. Conversely, those brainwashed, especially if they're a better person without it, may fail the individuality aspect and cannot count.

  • What if they are under orders from a higher-up? Depends. If the boss created the plans down to the letter and the candidate is just following them, sounds like we should discuss the boss instead. However, if the candidate takes creative liberties with the orders, adds their own charm and flair to them, fills in holes in the orders, and/or actively deals with obstacles their boss did not talk about, the candidate shows enough individual thinking to qualify.

  • What about Character Development? An MB is something a character can develop into... a nice person who plots well might become more morally gray as the work goes on and hits the "Bastard" criteria, thus making them viable. Likewise, a Smug Snake might shed their ego, become more understanding of the threat others pose and gain the personality or "Magnificent" criteria, likewise making them viable. Conversely, a character who looks like this trope might suffer from a Sanity Slippage or just get outed as not being as smart as they thought they were and become incompatible with MB.

  • Can an MB be a good guy? Not in the conventional sense... it is required they have at least some dubious traits lest they fail the "Bastard" criteria. That being said, a character who pulls a Heel–Face Turn or eventually stops taking villainous actions is still fair game: as there was a point in time where they were both "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and they've merely adapted as time goes on. Now... if such a character begins showing other issues (i.e.: becomes prone to freak outs or starts getting outwitted) then they're compromising their Magnificence and will probably be deemed a cut. What's important is stylishly operating while at least for some time being willing to take at best underhanded methods to see a job done. A Heel–Face Turn in itself isn't a disqualifier but they do have to have been "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and afterwards can't start slipping on the former front.

  • What about characters whose stories can take different routes?: When proposing a character in a form of media that has them in multiple story routes. Said character must be consistent with their characteristics in all routes. (ex.: Can't have an example who shows promise on one route yet fails in another.) The only exception is if a later installment of the series confirms the character's actions which made them worth proposing are the canon route.

  • Is there a timeframe rule like with Complete Monster?: Yes, please wait two weeks until after the work has concluded before proposing a character (again, usually using the North American air date). As is the case with CM, we want to give a reasonable time frame so that everyone interested in seeing the work has done so and can participate in the discussion without having anything spoiled.

  • What about groups like with Complete Monster?: This is a point of divergence between the two tropes. While CM does not allow for a single entry encompassing more than three characters lest their heinousness for crimes becomes too watered down, with MB as long as they are treated as one "unit" it is acceptable to lump all characters provided they share acts of charm and intelligence.

  • Can I propose my own work's character as a Magnificent Bastard?: No, this is a YMMV subject and the creator of a content is way too biased to be able to evaluate the criteria we're looking for without a second opinion taking over. That being said, you are more than welcome to encourage someone to consume your creation and if they feel a character counts, are more than welcome to suggest them.

Thread rules

When voting a troper must specify the effort post they're voting on and cannot merely vote on "Everything I missed" as in the past it has indicated the poster didn't read the effort post and is guessing instead of analyzing.

Resolved items

In general, a character listed on this trope is considered "settled". This means they should not be challenged unless information used to list them was incorrect or information was missed in the initial discussion.

However, when re-litigating a candidate, the same rules apply for when they were originally proposed. If they do not have five or more upvotes than downvotes for approval upon a re-litigation, including votes from the initial discussion if they do not change, then they are a cut.

This especially applies to the characters listed below, who have been discussed excessively and repeated attempts to get them listed/cut may result in punitive action for bogging down the thread.

Definitely an MB

Definitely not an MB

  • South Park: The show's frequent use of vulgar comedy and mean-spirited humor leaves any potential candidates devoid of the dignity or charm to qualify.

I changed the entry on the YMMV to the version in the film section. Only thing I added—which I suggest be added to the one in the film section too—is a pothole to Full Throttle:

  • 2000 film & Full Throttle: The "Creepy Thin Man" is a hitman hired by Knox to help execute his staged kidnapping scheme and framing of Corwin. A skilled fighter, having grown up a gypsy acrobat named Anthony in a Catholic orphanage, the Thin Man engages the Angels in a fight before then leading them to where they "find" Knox and remains undercover near Corwin while also engaging in and escaping during a race car chase and later killing Corwin on Knox's behalf too. The Thin Man also continues to remain diligent in helping Knox succeed. Escaping death when Knox blows the place up and returning in the next film, the Thin Man pursues a hitman sent to kill teenaged federal witness Max Petroni because Max was also from the same orphanage and successfully takes him out. The Thin Man is also revealed to have sent gifts to the orphanage for years and helps the Angels take on mobster Seamus O'Grady and his men in a climactic fight later on.

If it’s not too much trouble, Dr. Porkchop’s entry should be in the “Video Games“ folder of the Disney page, not the Toy Story tree. (Aladdin: Nasira’s Revenge sets the precedent.)

I’m gonna let you handle that Guma. Tbh pretty done with having to organize and reorganize tonight. You know how to get to the sandbox.

Future what do physical skills have to do with being an MB? If they fight it should be about intellect and tactics. Please don’t word count bulk.

[tup] Guy. Another for A Practical Guide to Evil tonight. I know some of you are getting pretty exasperated, but just hang in there. We're almost done.

Fantasy tropes dictate fate, character archetypes manifest in people as superpowered Names, Dread Empire of Praes bad, Callow good, Dread Empire conquered Callow, Dead King and Wandering Bard are omnicidal douchebags, yadda yadda yadda.

Now, with fantasy tropes playing such a big role in the setting, what other race would you expect to show up than orcs! War-loving cannibals whose most famous Name is that of "Warlord"... and who are decidedly not Always Chaotic Evil, with a rich culture of poetry and history. Unfortunately, millennia of oppression from overseas conquerors harvesting them for slaves and centuries of rule under the cruelty of Praes has utterly broken this culture, with only fragments of their once great society remembered. Under the Dread Empire, they're little more than a source of taxation and meat shields for armies, and an orc hasn't wielded a Name in centuries. The current rulers, Dread Empress Malicia and her Black Knight (affectionately referred to by others as simply "Black"), have attempted reforms by allowing them greater control over the Empire's armies, but pushback from the racist nobles has begun to stall these efforts.

At least, until a little shit named Catherine Foundling shows up.

Who is Hakram Deadhand, the Adjutant?

    Putting in a folder just to save space

An orc from the Howling Wolves clan, Hakram is frequently mischaracterized In-Universe as a cold, heartless sociopath. In truth, he's just a bit... ambitionless. Empty. Having tried his hand at numerous crafts, from trade to religion, but never truly finding meaning in any of them, he eventually signed up with the army simply because that was what orcs were expected to do. Life was life, and he went through the motions.

And then came the day he was assigned under a new transfer named Catherine Foundling, and followed her as she singlehandedly usurped command of their company and led them to victory, all the while screaming obscenities at the cruel nobles of the Empire. Although her defiance usually led to her getting her teeth kicked in, she always got back up, dusted herself off, and burned their houses down. And as he trailed behind, organizing her followers and seeing to the nitty gritty details of managing her growing war machine as her direct subordinate, he found his passion. He covered for her blind spots, realized he was good at what he was doing, and, enraged at the realization that the Praesi nobles would "rather set the table on fire" than allow some mongrel commoner have a seat, resolved to see through her plans to put their heads on spikes.

Hakram quickly gains the Name of Adjutant and evolves into the Hypercompetent Sidekick personified. While Cat is busy killing things, he sets up and almost singlehandedly runs her bureaucracies for both the army and eventually government when she crowns herself queen of Callow: organizing reports for her majesty; giving missions out to the spy network; getting allies to cooperate through either intimidation or earnest negotiations; sending relief efforts to keep refugees supplied and fed; personally taking to peacekeeping by breaking up fights between soldiers and citizens of occupied cities to build trust with the inhabitants, etc. We'd be here forever if I listed everything he did, so the point is Cat would be up shit creek without a paddle if it weren't for him. I feel I've thoroughly stressed how integral politics and statecraft is here, so having someone who can efficiently handle all that stuff is a godsend for her.

He also gradually starts losing parts of his body, first losing his hand in a fight with the hero known as the Lone Swordsman—he gets a skeletal prosthetic to replace it, earning the suitably epic epithet of "Deadhand." He chops his other hand off as a way to build trust with Cat's regent, Vivienne, as they had gotten off to a bad start when he almost choked her to death in order to make clear what would happen should she betray them.

“You know, one is understandable,” I said. “Happens to the best of us. But two? That’s just careless, Hakram. It’s not like you have any more spares.”
“I suppose my clapping days are over,” Adjutant thoughtfully replied. “Good thing I was never much of a theatre enthusiast.”
There was a pause.
“You made the same damned joke the last time you lost a hand, didn’t you?” I sighed.
“It’s funnier this time,” he told me. “You know, because I’m running out of hands to lose.”

And then, after decimating the elite demigod guards of a Prince of the Autumn Fae, he gets jumped by a bunch of demons haphazardly released without warning by the Wandering Bard, and has to get basically half of his entire body amputated. Once he gets strong enough to get back to work in a wheelchair, this proves to have done nothing to slow him down, and he soon receives more magical prosthetics that essentially turn him into a cyborc (pun intended).

However, issues soon start to arise. Black's Hakram-equivalent, Eudokia, works with Dread Empress Malicia to start a major crisis, intending to get Black to realize Malicia's lost it and needs to be overthrown. When Hakram and Cat confront her about this, Hakram sees something ugly in her: a blind, unwavering devotion, full of ambition... but only directed towards how she can better her master. He recognizes it in himself, and it terrifies him. Furthermore, the Name of Adjutant is pretty much entirely centered around his service to Cat, so when she starts to hold him back after the aforementioned demon incident out of fear that he could be further injured, even though he's just as competent as he's always been, it damages the Name and feels like part of his very soul is withering away. It's horrible, being bound so closely to someone you consider a sibling, yet having your entire being dependent on them keeping your service. Which leads to a drastic decision.

Due to shenanigans, Cat has finally gotten around to invading Praes and sends Hakram to the orc tribes—Malicia is trying to gain their support by raising one of their clan leaders as a high noble, so he needs to. You know. Make that not happen. While forming alliances and getting the lay of the land, Hakram figures out the main points of contention. Resist Malicia and stick with Black's reforms, and the orcs will become fully integrated into the Dread Empire, relegating them to even less than the mistreated vassal state they already are: little more than another minority ethnicity with most of their remaining culture erased in place of the Empire's own. Work with Malicia and vote for an orcish noble, creating a buffer between the Empire and the tribes to preserve their culture, and the trade established in the last few decades would end, leaving them impoverished and starving.

Hakram sees things differently. Both of these options hinge on the idea that the orcs would have to bow down to someone, either Cat and Black's reforms or Malicia. An understandable thought process, they've been operating from a position of weakness for centuries. The thing is... they're orcs. Their entire thing is raiding and murdering whoever is in their way. They've been so browbeaten that no one's realized can keep both their trade and their culture by simply taking an aggressive stance now that the Empire's weak. Sack their capital while it's already under siege by Cat! Force them to acquiesce to your demands at swordpoint! Create an invaluable trade commodity — say, mercenaries trained using techniques brought back by the Praesi army veterans — so they can't just roll your influence back in a few generations like they've done before!

Hakram sways some of Malicia's puppet's supporters to his side before challenging said puppet to a duel, effortlessly handing him his ass while dismantling his arguments in front of all the tribes. Standing victorious, Hakram abandons the Adjuntant Name keeping him chained to Cat, and just like that the Warlord lives again.

As for the rest of the series: partially because he's still upset about the whole "withering soul" thing, partially to break out of the precedent established by his years as the Adjutant as merely an extension of Callow, Hakram chooses to oppose Cat on who should rule Praes so that the orcs can establish themselves as separate players in their own right, collaborating with Black's complicated plan to keep Malicia on the throne while severely neutering the narrative of the Dread Empire that dragged her down into megalomania in the first place. That causes a bit of friction with Cat, but they eventually reconcile, and Hakram's faith is rewarded when, after being hit with a crippling spell that destroys most of his mind, Vivienne gives up her own hand to heal him. In the epilogues, Hakram has managed to squeeze his desired concessions out of Praes to allow the orcs strong trade and rights with relative independence from the Empire, while also investigating the elves, who have finally gotten off their asses to subcontract their ethnic cleansing of the continent out to the nation of giant rat monsters. He eventually retires to teach at Cat's school, and Word of God confirms that thanks to his efforts, orcish Names will reemerge in the following generations.

Any mitigating factors?

Hakram is the entire reason Cat is able to efficiently manage Callow. She may lead them into battle, but he's the one effectively running the kingdom, and before Vivienne manages to prove her worth he's seen by most everyone as Cat's true heir to the throne. It helps that he's quite charismatic in his own right, swaying every single orc tribe to his side and securing them the proper reforms that have been long denied.

Aside from that, he's a badass who sings ballads whenever fighting particularly difficult opponents, usually timing their defeats with the last note sung, and even gets one named after himself: "Dead the Hand," which is all about how he can't be beaten. Dude's great.

Despite all this, he's still Cat's Dragon, meaning he shares culpability for all her worst acts and frequently delivers orders for said morally dubious acts to be carried out by minions. You know, like that time she had hundreds of POWS crucified and used their corpses as mileposts.

Yes there.

So I've got a special candidate...

from the movie of all time...

What is Morbius?
We had a brief discussion of it, but anyways, Morbius is the smash-hit Sony superhero-horror film, known for breaking all the records and earning a Morbillion—

Yeah, okay, meme's dead, let's move on. Morbius is indeed a Superhero Horror flick starring Jared Leto as Dr. Michael Morbius, who tries to cure his rare blood disease by experimenting with Vampire Bat DNA. Somehow this works. It also, however, turns him into a vampire. Don't ask how it works.

Our candidate today is Morbius himself.

Who is Dr. Michael Morbius?
Morbius is the raddest dude ever. A scientist with a rare blood disease, he cures everything and is so cool he disses the King of Sweden and rejects the Nobel Prize. Having secretly captured Vampire Bats thanks to his childhood friend Milo funding his experiments to cure the disease they share. Since he's so rad, Morbius gets the funding from Milo and moves out to International Waters with a team of mercenaries and his lady friend Dr. Bancroft. He tests on himself and uh... it works, I guess?

Anyways Morbius is a vampire now, with powers like abs, echolocation, super speed, flight, and some other stuff. He proceeds to dish out a Mook Horror Show on the mercs when they come to check on him, hunting them through the ship and tearing them to shreds. Upon coming to his senses, Morbius quickly deletes the evidence and gets himself and Dr. Bancroft to shore. Being hunted by cops, Morbius also discovers another murder, and slowly realizes Milo has himself taken the "cure" and become a vampire, and breaks out of jail to stop him. When Milo begins a rampage of murderous hedonism, murdering multiple people, Morbius fights him in a subway where Milo kills some cops and then... basically leaves.

Luckily, Morbius is so rad he creates a cure to the cure, which can instantly kill a vampire. Declaring his intent to inject both himself and Milo with it, he then tracks Milo down between using his powers and using some good old finger-breaking on some counterfeiters, only for Milo to summon Michael to him, where Milo promptly fridges the nearest woman kills Bancroft in a move that is totally necessary to the film and will totally stick, setting up the final showdown between the two. When they fight, Milo initially wins, but Morbius gets some good bat action going and overwhelms Milo before stabbing him with the antibody and killing him for good this time. Then, he flies off, still running from police, as Bancroft revives.

Also then the Vulture shows up in The Stinger and convinces him to form a team because of course he does.

Is he Morbnificent?
Surprisingly... kinda, yeah. Michael is capable of losing his temper and getting very upset, but he's a brilliant scientist and a tactical genius. The one time he vamps out and shows off what he could do if he were in a better movie, he absolutely Morbs all over the mercenaries (In a scene that makes me wish Sam Raimi had directed this film) and tears them apart by sticking to the shadows like a murderous Batman. He cleverly learns to use his new powers very quickly and improvises in multiple situations. Though he gets caught and is off his game sometimes, he ultimately prevails in escaping the police and taking out Milo. He does everything on a very quick timetable and constantly devises unique strategies to take out his enemies between powers and old-fashioned detective work.

Michael definitely makes mistakes and can't outpace Milo, but... Milo is pretty quick, sudden and chaotic with his actions and regularly does things that Michael could never predict. He gets caught but also breaks out with about as much ease, comes up with methods to stave off his thirst for blood, etc. He's... really got the marks here IMO.

Is he a bastard?
While I'm tempted to say "yes" based on him being Jared Leto alone Morbin' Note , I think it can be solidly argued he actually is. First off, he does multiple illegal things to achieve his cure. Though the movie argues repeatedly that the mercenaries are hired guns and had it coming, the only dickish thing any of them ever do is one knocking out Dr. Bancroft and when Michael goes feral, he rips them apart. Then, since that might not sell him as bad enough, he proceeds to wipe all the evidence and escape before trying to avoid arrest and cover up his misdeeds, even trying to resist arrest despite constantly brooding about how he's a danger to everyone else. Then, despite saying he and Milo are cursed, he conveniently forgets to take the antivenom himself after their fight and seems to decide that he's fine with plaguing humanity. Also, the money counterfeiters were very low-level criminals and the fact he openly assaults them and breaks the fingers on one's hand to get info is pretty ruthless.

Look, Morbius is not a well-written character and by God is this not a well-written film— but he's stated outright to be "an antihero, who's in between the lines" by Espinosa, and his somewhat selfish actions reflect this. Add this to scenes which I think are frankly terrible writing like the fact he just ditches after Milo kills people and lets Milo go free, seemingly uncaring of his actions until Milo starts targeting people he cares about, I'd argue he's bad enough.

Milo?
God, do I wish Milo counted. Matt Smith has the time of his life and he's a far more fun character that Michael. I'd be more than willing to admit Milo if not for the fact I think he's too petty and childish in his attitude and actions, plus his impotent pleading that "You can't kill me, I'm your brother" when Michael is putting him down pretty much ruins it. Michael has him outclassed.

Conclusion?
It may be a dead meme, but... I get to say it. I put myself through the movie to do this effortpost. I've earned the right to say it.

It's Morbin' time.

... [tup] Morbius.

A cruel, sick joke is still a joke, and sometimes all you can do is laugh.

[tup] for Michael. There, now I won't acknowledge any memes from this movie or its community (though I won't stop others from making and referencing memes, you do you). It's clear you actually saw the movie, so an EP and later write-up are warranted.

Yes to Hakram and to Dr. Michael Morbius, at your service.

I'm not gonna lie, I considered changing my profile pic to Morbius just now to honor the occasion... but I just couldn't bear to part with Wheatley just yet.

Also can I get an update on some of the entry moving that's happening... I remember it said a while back that anime movies need to go on Animated Films and I'm cool with that but it seems everything including single-episode OVAs got moved. For the sake of consistency I'd like to understand why we've held that Made for TV movies go on Live-Action TV rather than Live-Action Films. I feel like either non-theatrical/major releases should either go back to Anime & Manga and Western Animation or Made for TV stuff should be getting moved over. I really have no clue where we are with precedent but I'd like everything to be uniform.

[tup]Hakram.

Oh man Morbius, this is so morbin cool to see this morbin EP. I'm just so morbin excited to give Michael Morbius the Morbius'd [tup] possible. It certainly was a movie that existed.

In all seriousness I feel this is a great example of why an MB isn't always a better villain than a villain who isn't.

[up][up] In all honesty I have never really understood why Made For TV Movies are going on Live-Action TV. If there is enough a page could possibly be created but if not then I would say it makes more sense to go on Live-Action Films.
