The Copy-Paste Cleanup Thread

Go To

Apparently some people find it easier to copy-paste text from other sources, including Wikipedia or the creator's original site, instead of coming up with their own text.

However, this could get the website in a ton of legal trouble for plagiarism and/or copyright violations. (Not to mention it's lazy writing to boot.) Since stopping that problem is a very high priority, and I've observed multiple cases of this problem as of late, let's give this its own dedicated clean-up thread. If you see any work, character, or recap descriptions that copy another source word-for-word, bring them up here if you're not sure how to immediately fix them.

Moderator notice: If you cannot immediately rewrite plagiarized text, remove it and put in a placeholder note. A sample follows:

[This description was copied in violation of our [[Administrivia/AboutImagesAndCopyright Plagiarism]] policy. Please replace it with original writing.]

Below is a list of currently known pages that suffer from this problem, and the source they copy from. (This list can be updated by mods or by me, Totemic Hero.) The ideal goal is to have these pages fixed within a week or two of finding out about the copy-paste. If we can't manage to come up with a fix in that time frame, then we'll probably have to outright Cut List said pages, because the site can't risk legal issues.

Someone here can post a message on the other wiki that the content was copied under an incompatible license. If that doesn’t work, our admins can talk to their admins.

I have the feel that Guppy Love could use an actual description. I can't write one now, due to anxiety.

A lot of the first paragraph of the description for Queen Latifah is copied from Wikipedia.

Edit: I ended up cutting it out of the paragraph because it was mostly superfluous anyway.

While doing some minor editing, I noticed Kiyoko Yoshimura's first paragraph is copied and pasted from Sonic News Network.

Kiyoko Yoshimura is a Japanese writer that has done work for the Sonic the Hedgehog series and the anime series Sonic X'.''

Kiyoko Yoshimura (吉村 清子 Yoshimura Kiyoko?) is a Japanese writer that has done work for the Sonic the Hedgehog series and the anime series Sonic X.

Here I offer my rewrite:

Kiyoko Yoshimura (吉村 清子 Yoshimura Kiyoko) is a Japanese screenwriter who has done work for multiple anime projects, which includes Sonic X.

The page was created by a now banned troper with an agenda, who wanted to make her reputation dirty, incluiding saying she wrote about rape in kids shows. I'll keep the page around because it will work for my index of videogame scriptwriters.

Nioh Guardian Spirits contains several descriptions that are copied word-for-word from the games themselves.

EDIT: Actually, it looks like it isn't the only Nioh page that contains copied text. Nioh Enemies and Bosses also contains copied text from the game itself.

Copying from other TVT articles isn't plagiarism and doesn't need to be cited, so just remove that statement. Which it looks like someone already did.

So quick question - I know we've taken down CM EPs for being plagiarized in the past, but what happens if it's the Troper's own work they're copying? As in they wrote the information on another site and copied it over, but we can verify it was written by the same person?

I stumbled across a bunch of recap pages copied directly from Wikipedia. All of the Prison Break recap pages created by pecelot (some seen here) were copied. There's a lot of them.

IJDC seems to have lifted content from All the Tropes. And they're doing a pretty terrible job hiding the plagiarism, considering the "[2]" that randomly pops up.

Anyways, whole thing has not seen updates for years (save for some cleanup). So...

Those Prison Break recaps can be cut, as can that webcomic page. I suspended pecelot but they haven't edited in years so it seems unlikely we'll ever get to confront them.

Well, I cutlisted all of those pages, and then I thought to check the ones for the first season, which pecelot didn't create. Turns out those are all copied from Wikipedia, too. Mel Taco made them. And judging by their edit history, they probably did this for other recap pages as well. At least one of the Animal Kingdom recap pages was copied.

Man. Seems like plagiarized Recaps is a bit of a plague. Guess we should cut those too, or at least remove their descriptions.

Speaking of plagiarized recap pages, but I just noticed that Recap.Power Rangers Wild Force Wishes On The Water appears to be copied from the official episode description, and looking through the history of the troper who added the descriptions they appear to have added a number of Power Ranger recap descriptions that I suspect were similarly plagiarized.

Right. I'm suspending them to let them know what the issue is. Meanwhile, please wipe those descriptions and put the placeholder text in.

So I have just come across a very... unfortunate discovery.

Every single playable Cookie in Cookie Run or Cookie Run: Kingdom plagiarize their LINE, OvenBreak, or Kingdom descriptions - the descriptions for Cookies that appear in both LINE and OvenBreak even have both, with the OB description put into a note - two Cookies in the NPC section, Artichoke Cookie and Piñata Cookie, also take their descriptions from Puzzle World.

This is bad on its own, but there's like, 100 playable Cookies across all the games. The amount of text these pages have lifted from the games could make for a decently sized novel.

This might need a separate, short term, cleanup, tbh - I don't know how many people this side of the forums like Cookie Run, and there's just so much it'd be ridiculous to expect someone to go through all the pages themselves and write new descriptions for every single Cookie - I didn't even know there were that many Cookies exclusive to LINE before reading these pages!

The pages are also organized weirdly too - the characters that debuted in LINE/OvenBreak are split into two separate categories, yet on the [x]-Rank character pages they're organized by how OB ranks them. It'd make more sense to move the Cookies that appear in both to their respective rank pages and just make a separate "Cookies exclusive to LINE" page or something
