Removed from YMMV.Call Of Duty Black Ops 4 since the game came out not too long ago:

  • Broken Base: Since this is one of the most departed entries from the traditional formula, there is a fair bit of division within the Playerbase
    • The above mentioned removal of the single-player campaign. While some players accepted the Specialist missions (or otherwise didn't care either way), many continued to protest its exclusion up until the release date and beyond.
    • The inclusion of a Battle Royale mode, for a number of reasons including the mode being considered the opposite of the Call of Duty formula as well as it being considered by a large number of fans the reason for the Campaign's exclusion.
    • The heavier focus on Tactical Play and Teamwork also has received some flak, primarily because most casual Call of Duty players aren't known for focusing on Teamwork over a Lone Wolf-style experience.

I removed this from Hitman 2, since the game's barely been out.

  • Broken Base: The New Zealand level has proven to be fairly divisive. Some fans dismiss it as a tiny unnecessary note  glorified tutorial level. Others appreciate the unique spin on the typical Hitman level: whereas most levels have you infiltrating a location and then causally exiting, here you casually walk into a location and after a certain trigger, said location is swarmed with hostiles, forcing you to both kill your target and escape.

Bringing up this example from Disney Live-Action Remakes:

  • Broken Base: A very big one concerning these movies. You'll have people who love them for the depth they consider they bring to the old Disney films (and oftentimes, they hate the old movies for being corny, outdated and having sexist/racist elements), while classic Disney fans dislike them for considering them soulless imitations of the movies they loved for years, and are feeling Disney is really running out of ideas (to the point that as of now Disney's current slate only consists of remakes, sequels, and Star Wars/Marvel stuff -ie nothing original). Some also feel it's another attempt to minimize 2D's influence in current Disney, considering how as of yet there's no word of live action remakes of the Pixar or current CGI Disney movies.

Question, should Recaps have Base-Breaking Character or Broken Base on them? Or they are better suited for the main YMMV of the show?

I don't see why Broken Base couldn't go on a recap's YMMV page. However, since these pages tend to be made and edited shortly after the episode airs, they often attract misuse since examples are often added before the end of the six-month waiting period.

Base-Breaking Character, however, probably doesn't belong on these pages since it applies to a character and not to the episode.

[up]Ok, because im getting back to watching My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and i do see Base-Breaking Character being use in recap on a character's action then the character themselves.

From YMMV.Kirby Planet Robobot:

  • Broken Base:
    • There are a few who are disappointed that the long-time absent UFO ability requires the new Kirby series amiibo in order to be used. However, there are many excited to get the new amiibo anyway and some feel that UFO being locked behind the amiibo is fitting, given that it's always been a rare ability and when obtained, it proves to be a total Game-Breaker. Slightly averted due to the fact that it can also be earned as a reward without the amiibo by gaining 100% completion — but of course, that means completing the notoriously difficult True Arena at least once, and without amiibo, it can't be taken into the Arenas.
    • The True Final Boss. While the original fight with Star Dream and the unique parts of this fight were well-received, this fight has a fair amount of detractors for being the longest boss in the franchise, taking up half of the True Arena, and its last-ditch attack, with it either being a nice twist on the formula or downright cheap.
    • While the Planet Robobot Q&A session has been received mostly warmly, one particular point bothers the fans a lot: the reveal that the series' "extra modes" (including the Arenas and New Game Plus-style modes) aren't completely canon. Some find that it only makes sense (as the extra modes can often completely contradict the main story), some are annoyed because it causes a lot of plot holes and potentially eliminates some well-liked events of those modes from the canon, and others are simply confused about what it entails. It doesn't help that Shinya Kumazaki didn't elaborate much on his response.

  • UFO Ability: Cut since it turned out you don't need the Amiibo to get it, and the slightly averted part, aside from the fact that Audience Reactions can't be played with, suggests that this was added pre-release.
  • True Final Boss: Cut for being too negative focused. Maybe it could be rewritten.
  • Q&A session: Maybe keep, but this isn't something I see a lot of fans arguing about.

I would argue that individual episodes almost never have fanbases distinct from the fanbase of the show itself, and therefore Broken Base can by definition not apply to a single episode. It follows from that that Recap pages shouldn't have Broken Base entries. Even on the very rare occasion that a single episode is the epicenter of a true Broken Base, it's still the show's fanbase that's broken, not the episode's.

Yeah, individual episodes shouldn't have tropes relating to the fanbase as a whole. That also goes for potholes (which normally should stay entirely clear of YMMV tropes). If you can actually make the argument that the fanbase is specific for the episode alone, sure, go ahead, but I wouldn't bet on ever seeing one of those as a legitimate example.

Some of the examples over at BrokenBase. The Nostalgia Critic need some looking at. Espically this one, for being incredibly one sided.

Yes I know siding with Youtube's policies is considered to be siding with Satan. But there's the question if Doug is really helping out smaller Youtube channels and whether on not his videos actually consitute fair use, considering just how much footage he uses.

[up]The example seems its leaning towards the negative. But i dont have no true opinion on the live remakes.

From My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic S 5 E 17 Madein Manehattan

  • Broken Base: Some fans aren't too happy about having three Rarity-centric episodes in a row, especially coming off a two month hiatus. Though on the other hand, keeping in mind that Rarity had been neglected, especially during Season 3, this can be seen as a Throw the Dog a Bone...
    • One also has to consider that this was a result of the broadcast order (specifically pushing "Scare Master" to fall on Halloween in the original broadcast) and not production order.

Doesnt seem like a Broken Base and more some fans wanting to see another pony center episode.

[down]Just finished their 8th season.

Pulled this from Symphony of the Night:

  • Broken Base:
    • The English voice acting in this game is the most prominent aspect in this case.
      • The PS1 English voice work was initially flat-out reviled, but over the course of the 2000s became a popular case of So Bad, It's Good. (While fans frequently compare the English voice work in the PS1 and PSP versions over which version is better.) But during the late 2000s/early 2010s, there are a small but increasing amount of fans who think the English voice work in the PS1 version is genuinely good and underrated.
      • The PSP English voice work has this in spades as well... Is the PSP version's voice acting genuinely good and an unfortunate victim of the Nostalgia Filter from fans of the PS1 version? Or did the PSP version try to take the game far too seriously? Or is it really not any better than the PS1 version as they sound too generic? (At least the PS1 version tried to sound a bit more European, as just about everyone in the PSP version sounded too American.) It depends on what you felt about the voice work in the PS1 version or if you are a fan of Californian anime English dub VAs such as Yuri Lowenthal, Wendee Lee, and Michelle Ruff.
    • Voice acting aside, the game itself has this as well; fans argue over things such as whether it should be praised or hated for being known as the cause of Metroidvania, as a lot of other Castlevania games tried to be like Symphony of the Night, at the expense of the former deliberate action platformer style the series used to be known for. Egoraptor discussed the latter in his first Sequelitis video.
    • The Game-Breaker items. Some feel that having them in the game completely kills the enjoyment of the game. Others point out that they're fun to use, and that people who complain about them can simply choose not to use them.
    • The credits song, "I am the Wind." Some fans love the song, others hate it and think it doesn't fit the atmosphere of the game.
    • While everyone agrees that the Sega Saturn port is technically inferior to the PlayStation original despite the Saturn being a more powerful 2D system, there's debate among the fanbase as to if the technical issues aren't that bad and if the extra content still makes it a respectable version worth your time. Others will say that the extra content isn't up to the high quality of the rest of the game and that you shouldn't even bother. There's also the third group of people who will say that it's an inferior version and the extra content isn't worth it, but don't consider them deal breakers when the core game is still fantastic.
    • Which version of Maria is best? The Saturn incarnation who can triple jump, throw fireballs, and use martial arts, or the PSP beast mistress that summons her familiar animal companions? This largely seems to depend on which version you've seen first. Saturn fans think she's much more badass and fun, while the Dracula X supporters decry Saturn Maria as a Game-Breaker and like that she's faithful to her original Rondo of Blood fighting style. Some even like that she's much weaker in comparison, as the game's infamous for its easy difficulty and think she's the closest thing the game has to a hard mode.

I doubt anyone has ever complained about this game causing metroidvanias (and even then, that entry does a poor job of explaining it), but I'm not sure about the rest.

The voice acting and maybe the PS 1-vs-Saturn ones can stay with some condensation and revision. Everything else is pretty dispensable. I've witnessed quite a few legitimate arguments even in recent times over whether to get the original PS 1 version or the remakes/remasters on the basis of the voice acting alone.

  • Even after months after "A Single Pale Rose", fans are still divided over whether the reveal Rose is Pink Diamond was a good twist.

Even though the six month limit has past, this does bug all to explain why it's divisive.

This was added to YMMV.Jo Jos Bizarre Adventure Vento Aureo:

  • There seems to be some debate on whether or not Giorno is a vampire like DIO is, and whether or not this would have benefited or hurt his position among fans if he had been canonically confirmed as one. Our Vampires Are Different, and the manga doesn't go into detail at all on whether or not vampirism is passed on through the parent's DNA. Weirdly enough, this debate never comes up in regards to Giorno's half-brothers, who show up in Stone Ocean.
  • Whether or not Jonathan or DIO is Giorno's "real" father, considering DIO hadn't fully absorbed Jonathan's body before conceiving children, and because Giorno retains some of Jonathan's traits as well, like his more noble nature.

For the first point, it's 100% undebatable that Giorno is not a vampire since he doesn't exhibit any vampire-like traits (such as burning to death in sunlight), and discussing whether or not he should have been one is veering into Alternate Universe Fic territory.

The second point is more of an Alternate Character Interpretation than a Broken Base.

From YMMV.Pirates Of The Caribbean:

  • Broken Base: A 2017 refurbishment to the Disneyland Paris ride revised the auction, from a male pirate selling wenches into forced marriage, to male and female pirates selling chickens and stolen rum; these changes spread to both American POTC rides the following year. Some riders have thanked Disney for removing a scene that seemed to make light of human trafficking, and for allowing the redhead wench to level up from eye candy to piracy. Other riders have seen the change as Political Correctness Gone Mad, especially since the attraction never seemed to encourage human trafficking. Another camp suggested that Disney could have compromised by showing the redhead actively fend off men who objectified her, which wouldn't have required replacing all of the dialogue.

Do the second and third camps still feel large enough to note like this?note
