All-Purpose Policy and Meta discussion: Administrivia.Trope Repair Shop

Go To

This thread is a metathread for Trope Repair Shop discussion. Things like TRS policy, what is needed in a TRS opening post, questions about whether a certain topic is TRS-worthy and questions about why a thread wasn't opened go here.

Some guidelines for when/whether to use TRS:

  • If the trope is fine, but has some bad examples, feel free to clean them up or to start a cleanup project at Projects: Short-Term. Trope Repair Shop is for when cleaning isn't sufficient.
  • If you think there's something wrong with the trope that systematically attracts improper examples, start a discussion at Trope Talk. Use a Wick Check to see whether there's an issue present (and if there is, what the issue is), and post the results on TRS Queue and wait your turn if a problem is present. The following methods are two possible ways to do a wick check (though not necessarily the only ways):
    • You can go ahead with the Wick Check without a discussion if you know what you're looking for. While it's not mandatory, feel free to ask someone for help confirming that you got the issue and the numbers correct.
    • Consult the Wick Check Project thread to collect evidence if you need help.
  • If a wick check is too much for you, you can leave the issue at Tropes Needing TRS citing the discussion.
  • Depending on a trope (or non-trope) in question, a wick check may be determined to not be required, such as for tropes that are not thriving (per the standards for trope health listed on the Wick page). However, there is no problem if you want to do one anyway.

For related projects, see Wick Cleaning Projects and the Wick Check Project.

See Tropes Needing TRS for a list of trope candidates for TRS.

A (not mandatory, informal) queue for prospective TRS participants can be found at the TRS Queue.

The Original Flavour thread mentions a wick check, but doesn't actually contain or link to one. I also question the argument that the "Flavour" in the name makes it sound like a Food Trope, since the word has more than one meaning. The argument strikes me as similar to arguing that people might think a Vanilla Protagonist is an ice cream-based Anthropomorphic Food character (a now-closed TRS thread from a few years ago showed that it is often misused to refer to characters thought of as boring, which isn't the intended definition, but that's a conversation for another day).

[up] Has been declined.

In other news, I realized that I overestimated the amount of tropes applicable years ago. Coupled with how it didn't take off, let's say that the Animal Tropes cleanup...had to be euthanized.

Better than making a zombie out of it, right?

Well, if there's an April Fool's version, then it could be a possibility to add to that one, with real threads on the proper issue? [lol]

The oldest thread right now is this one, for Only Point Two Percent Different. I would expect discussion to be short-to-medium, and I know I'd be advocating for sending to the TLP scrap yard. The name's not good and the usage count is low-low-low.

The thread for Playing The Player has spawned a sandbox for the possibly tropable concept. Shall we send it to TLP?

In the meantime, I'll open up the .2% thread.

Yellow Sash of Power's reason on Tropes Needing TRS doesn't seem to be an issue and is probably just someone complaining about the title. Some hall monitors do wear yellow sashes, including my 10-year-old self.

[up][up]My retracted post was actually made about that same trope because I initially mistook it for an appearance trope and wondered if it should be handled in the appearance trope thread, but then I took a closer look at the description and saw that it isn't actually an appearance trope, despite the name.

I'm aware that this post isn't really relevant; I just thought it was an amusing coincidence considering I removed what I originally wrote about Yellow Sash of Power a few hours before its Tropes Needing TRS entry was brought up as a non-issue.

Yellow Sash of Power only has 44 wicks after 14 years. It's technically healthy, but I feel like it could get more attention if its name was clearer. I for one don't associate hall monitors with yellow sashes specifically. (Sashes make me think more of beauty pageant winners than anything.)

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

As the person who expressed interest in so salvaging the tropable concept within Playing the Player, and the author of the sandbox, is there any comment on the above-quoted question, or on the sandbox linked there?

Um, yes i have a thing

The Samurai Warriors page has what i think it's a pretty bad example of a Contested Sequel.

The person added an exemple of something that's not out, with a pretty big dose of speculation/"jumping to conclusions" Should i hide it or delete it?

[up] This isn't the proper thread, but sure, I'd say comment it out if nothing else. Don't have much context to really go on.

Anyway, if we're looking for another quick thing to open next, maybe Screw This, I'm Outta Here? There's a lot of wicks, but the easiest solution would be to just expand the definition, meaning we wouldn't actually have to touch those wicks.

I see yellow sash has been removed from Tropes Needing TRS, but discussion here suggests that removal is premature. Shall we put it back until someone does a wick check that proves whether or not there is misuse?

[up] Alternatively, we can do the wick check first and put it back afterward if the results show the issue is real. Either way, a wick check is necessary here.

Double post, different topic:

The The "The" Title Confusion thread (three "The"s in a row, whooo) is a copy and paste of a Trope Talk thread the OP made, which didn't get any responses. I feel like something like this would at least need a wick check to see if the examples would make more sense on YMMV pages. As is, a one-sentence opener with nothing else added seems a bit too rushed for a TRS.

The thread for That One Guy doesn't have a wick check, and I think the OP mistakenly thought the "Complaining" tag means "I have a complaint about this trope" instead of "This trope attracts complaining", which has happened with previous threads.

I wonder if the tag would be better as "Complaining Bait" to make it clear it's about the trope attracting complaining.

[up]I feel like I've seen problematic pages referred to as "complaint magnets" in the complaining cleanup thread, so maybe "Complaint Magnet" would also work if it's already used elsewhere on the forums.

Edit: The recently created thread for Puppetmaster looks solid, and the lack of wicks means it wouldn't take long to get out of the backlog. That said, I think turning it into a disambiguation page between pages like Marionette Master, People Puppets, and Evil Puppeteer would be better than the OP's proposal of turning it into a redirect to Marionette Master alone.

While I agree that the now-closed thread for Wind from Beneath My Wings wasn't made properly done (since the "wick check" wasn't actually a proper wick check), I am starting to wonder if it could be The Same, but More Specific to Blow You Away since 34 out of 127 wicks, as well as the page image, are from a single series (Pokémon); whether it is would depend on whether a properly done wick check shows how it's being used. That said, I'm not going to argue in favor of doing anything with the trope unless someone makes a properly done thread.

Lacking a response to the question of TLP-ing a new trope in the ashes of "Playing The Player", I've decided to go through with starting the TLP process.

My apologies if this isn't the done thing—I've not had a TLP effort go through this thread before. ^^;
