Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?

Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

I mean, on one hand yeah it's very questionable, though on the other hand, depending on when the work was made and who made it, living a stable, heterosexual married life did used to be seen as more heroic than divorces and Gay Cruising was. So as sticky as it is, I can see how the film could intend for to be seen as a Historical Hero Upgrade, but the example would need to be written more neutrally if that's the case.

Can Suspiciously Similar Song apply when the songs in question are by the same artist? Because “Find Your Flame” from Sonic Frontiers is listed for “Infinite” from Sonic Forces, but both seem basically written as if they’re from the same album. Both have vocals by Tyler Smith, are in the same rap rock style, are Bragging Theme Tunes

Edit: I’m tired alright?

Again, I'm not saying that it is wrong, but that the movie itself likely assumed their audience would see it as wrong, thus changing it for said audience.

Missed on several previous pages:

Would this be an example of Serendipity Writes the Plot:

  • In 2001, the car tuning company Teckademics put out a video called Mischief which was a collection of segments depicting street racing and basic goofing around in cars. It was successful enough for Teckademics to greenlight a sequel, but there was a problem: the footage for Mischief had been shot over a period of three years and they wanted a follow-up as soon as possible. It was later discovered that the Gumball 3000 road rally would be taking part in the United States for the first time. Someone realized that if they entered and filmed the rally, the coverage would take up the bulk of the video and they wouldn't have to film as many segments to go with it.

Would this count as a False Rape Accusation or a regular Frame-Up?

  • In the opening scene of Valentine, a young girl named Dorothy Wheeler frames her classmate Jeremy Melton for sexually assaulting her, a claim corroborated by three of her friends and a bully who teased Dorothy and Jeremy when they were found kissing. This becomes the root of Jeremy's vendetta against Dorothy and her friends during the film's main events.

Does a framing have to be intentional? (By the general definition I think so, but I can't tell from the trope description how the trope is defined.) That scene definitely doesn't look intentional. She doesn't even directly accuse him until asked if he attacked her.

In a later scene, Dorothy admits to Kate and Paige (the only two friends alive by that point) that she lied to the authorities (after the bullies stopped beating Jeremy) by saying Jeremy attacked her and that she did it to avoid embarrassment.

I think False Rape Accusation works better beacuse Frame-Up is used more to damage someone's reputation and requires advance planning.

Reposting from over the page.

Found this on Significant Green Eyed Red Head. RWBY is a World of Technicolour Hair setting, which disqualifies the work. I would normally have just removed this, but I removed this for the same reason back in 2020. It was added back at some point earlier this year. Am I able to go ahead and remove it again without edit warring?

  • RWBY has Pyrrha Nikos, who funnily enough bears a passing resemblance (and also shares a voice) with Agent Carolina. She's The Ace of her team, being a world-renowned talented fighter that is also beautiful, has been blessed with incredible opportunities and a supportive family. If that wasn't enough she also just so happens to be scouted as the perfect Fall Maiden replacement after the current one was assaulted by Cinder Fall. Unfortunately she would meet her end in Volume 3 in Cinder's hands.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

Sons of Slaves works even when we only know one character, right?

[up][up]I buy that she's important from that entry, but not how the green eyes and red hair contributed to her importance.

[up]The trope is about an entire group with a history of being slaves, so if it's not explicitly about a group I'd be hesitant to add it. "Descended from slaves" might just mean that she had multiple generations of ancestors who were slaves, but it isn't a societal thing.

Can Foreshadowing be retrospective? Before the tomatoes, I'm talking about The White Lotus, which was initially a one-off before its runaway success resulted in a renewal and anthology format. According to the Word of God at the end of the episode, one of the returning character's conclusions was driven by a throwaway line they had said in the first season, which they decided to build on after it was renewed.

[up] Do the returning character already complete their arc in the first season? If so, then I think it is a case of Plot Leveling.

EDIT: [down] Call-Back sounds better.

It's not a Call-Back because they don't bring it up again in the work itself. That it was borne from that idea is only revealed in the post-episode discussion with the creator.

Would you say that people can still get the connection if they don't watch what the author said?

Like, you can completely miss that detail and have no idea that the conclusion is base in a line for season 1 unless you watch the end of the episode.

Fetishized Abuser: I guess this came about due to renaming from Bastard Boyfriend? Is this just Jerkass? The work page calls him a Domestic Abuser?

  • The Outside Circle: Dennis, the boyfriend of Pete and Joey's mother, is a drug addict who sold all of Pete's family's belongings, prseumably for more drug money. When Pete confronts him about it, Dennis slashes him across the face with a knife. Pete's response is to shoot him dead.

This example on Winnie The Pooh: A Valentine For You:

  • Acting Unnatural: When Pooh and his friends find Christopher Robin, they sound uncertain as if trying to cover the Smitten up and keep it a secret from him.

Should it be removed because neither of the characters tell each other to act natural before they reach Christopher Robin?

This is from Derailing Love Interests.

  • This happened in Twilight. When Edward leaves in New Moon, Bella gets close to Jacob, who falls in love with her. When Edward comes back, in order to justify Bella staying with him rather than Jacob, the author has to make Jacob do some kind of drastic, out-of-character things, like forcing Bella to kiss him and threatening suicide to manipulate her. Then again, Bella already chose Edward as soon as he came back before Jacob started to behave badly, so it's more of a "justifying her decision not to change her mind and go with the guy who treats her like an equal and actually seems to have any feelings for her besides claiming that he loves her" than a "justifying her decision to go back."
    • Of course, given how Edward behaves in the relationship, one could just as easily assume that Meyer was trying to make Jacob better as love interest material, especially since Bella only realizes she loves him after the forced kiss and all.
      • This has been confirmed by Stephenie Meyer - the changes in Jacob's characterization were meant to make him a serious contender for Bella.

I have to ask this here since this is not only a natter filled nightmare but if what the third bullet says its true its not an example of the trope.

I am considering to see if this is a case of Violation of Common Sense or another fitting trope, but:

In Mario Super Sluggers, I that you can actually catch Star Swings through methods that look otherwise risky. Take Wario's Star Swing, "Phony Swing" for example, normally when you try to catch it without jumping, the Bob-omb explodes and knocks down your fielder and gets stunned.

But, if you try jump ahead to catch the ball while in mid-air, while it still results in explosion and stun, the game registers it as an out (with the words "NICE PLAY!"), despite normally it doesn't look like the CPU would even try it.

I only knew it from the source, which is from a video from Youtube (that also explains catching other Star Swings in Mario Super Sluggers), as seen here:

[up][up][up] Someone telling another person to act natural isn't necessary for the trope. However, that example is lacking context.

[up][up] You forgot to include the trope.

[up][up][up][up] If the character's feelings for the love interest start/continue after the behavior cited in the example, as the second bullet say they do, then it's not derailing the love interest.

I might have missed it but Video Games Mass effect takes about The Illusive Man and his real name. That he shares a last name with a Squadmate in Andormdia but not that his first name is the same as one from 2.

Also, we missed this one for Super Mario Bros., It has Forman Spike the human antagonist of Wrecking Crew and Spike the uncommon enemy of the Koopa Troop.
