Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Does this hypothetical example fit under Significant Green-Eyed Redhead?

The character has flame-colored hair and one visible green eye; the other eye is obscured by hair. Very late in the work, the other eye is revealed to be a different color.

If it's a world of Technicolor Eyes (and the hidden eye is an unnatural color), does that alone disqualify this example?

[up]I checked, and the work being a world where it's not usual to have Technicolor Eyes doesn't seem to be a disqualifier. However, I feel it's downplayed since the character just has one green eye and two green eyes seem to be a requirement for played straight examples.

That said, this is assuming this was intentional and to make the character stand out (which are both requirements for Significant Green-Eyed Redhead).

  • John Nash and his (first) wife in A Beautiful Mind. In the film, she is still with him in the 1990s when he got his Nobel prize, making it a heterosexual triumph-of-love story. In real life, she divorced him in the 60s when he got caught hanging around in public toilets picking up young men, and he wasn't allowed to accept his Nobel onstage due to being off his meds. He did, however, reconcile with and remarry her.

From Historical Hero Upgrade... Unless those men were underage I think this REALLY isnt an example, and its filled with Unfortunate Implications.

[up]I don't feel that counts as Historical Hero Upgrade either. This is because I don't feel divorcing someone after they're picking up other people is a villainous action (which the entry seems to be getting at).

Characters.Planet Zoo had a few adaptation tropes relating to how animals are depicted in the game vs. in real life. I've removed most of them or changed them to other tropes, but I'm not sure what to do with the Adaptational Wimp entries about how flamingos and cranes in the game can't be bothered to fly.

[up]I'm leaning on saying those don't count as Adaptational Wimp since I wouldn't say this is a difference between an adaptation and the original.

Sorry for getting mixed up here, but I am trying to find an answer to this: Does anyone know if there is a trope for this? It's some sort of in-universe television news like openings? This is for the work page I'm working on, Touhou Baseball In Heat Star 2007. I tried also asked on Trope Finder too but I didn't get an example at all, it's perhaps too complicated, not to mention the text in the screenshot and the video are in Japanese (which I translated with external help.)

     Translations for both screenshots:

Upper screenshot:

Title: "Gensyoko baseball news"
Reimu: "Long time no see~ Everyone's favorite, Reimu Hakurei, the wonderful shrine maiden of paradise, is here!"

Lower screenshot:
Team Plays Win Loss Draw Percent Difference Pts
Chunichi Dragons 26 17 9 0 .654
Gensyoko Turtles 26 15 10 1 .600 1.5
Hiroshima Carps 26 13 13 0 .500 4.0
Yorimuri Giants 26 12 14 0 .462 5.0
Yokohama BayStars 26 11 15 0 .423 6.0
Hanshin Tigers 26 9 16 1 .360 7.5
Reimu: "This is the current standings. Chunichi is still as strong as expected, and We ended up losing the opening game. But Marisa pitched surprisingly well."

On Hades

  • Recurring Fanon Character: Of the Olympian gods, Apollo, Hera, Hephaestus, and Hestia are the only to not appear in the game. Thus, many fans have envisioned how they would be depicted in this universe, how they would interact with Zagreus, and what boons they would give him. Other gods such as Eros, Eris, and Hecate also have been given fan interpretations.

Does this count, since this game is based on Greek myths, and these are all guys from those, so do they actually count? Also several of these have been confirmed they'll be in the sequel.

I think this part of the description would apply:

An Adapted Out reinterpretation; a character from the main work doesn't appear in an adaptation, so someone creates a fanwork involving them. This interpretation of the character becomes popular and is used in subsequent works based off the adaptation. Note that this is for a specific interpretation of the character; if the character appears in multiple fanworks based on the adaptation, but each has their own version of the character, it's not this trope.

So it would count if the gods are regularly characterized the same way, and not if they aren't. (From the example it sounds like they aren't.)

Can confirm they aren't. They're closer to O.C. Stand-in since they definitely exist within the work's canon but are The Ghost, so fans go ham with designs and weaponry and the like.

[up][up][up]I think you're looking for a "news broadcast opening" trope? I think that's a fair trope, not sure if we have it — but Trope Finder was the correct place to ask.

[up](x6) I'd comment those out for being zero-context because, without knowing that those are Deadpan Snarker entries, it's unclear that they're discussing that trope in particular.

[up](x4) I think we're supposed to take stuff like that to Trope Finder, unless you're experiencing a query suspension. For the record, I don't know if there is a trope that applies to what you brought up.

[up](x3) In my opinion, that doesn't count as Recurring Fanon Character since those characters aren't fan-made in the first place.

(Couldn't figure out where to post about tropes besides here) (read the rules and understood a little bit)

Hmmmm..... (Thinking)....

I was wondering if there is a TV Trope about a shapeshifter and spellcaster compared to the two characters from "Threads of Fate" (Video Game)

https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/VideoGame/ThreadsOfFate

I mean didn't anyone besides me noticed that Ben 10 and Teen Titans had the same concept too?

For Example:

1.) Threads of Fate (Dewprism)

• Rue - Transforms into Monsters

• Mint - Uses Elemental magic

2.) Ben 10

• Ben - Transforms into Aliens

• Gwen - Uses Magical Spells

3.) Teen Titans

• Beast Boy - Transforms into animals

• Raven - Uses Magic

P.S. - I just sure hope I'm posting this in the right thread and section.

I found this Broken Aesop example recently added to Characters.Beast Tamer. I moved it to Literature.Beast Tamer since I wasn't sure it was a character trope but I'm not entirely sure it's an example at all.

  • Broken Aesop: At the end of the mine investigation quest, after hearing that some adventurers turned criminal were caught red-handed stealing his mithril ore, Grantz laments that he "selfishly" put his customers through "an exam" to get his best weapons, selling mass-produced weapons to those who fail the Secret Test. Before giving the quest to Rein, he pointed out that the very reason he prepared the test, to begin with, is that people don't take his craft seriously in the first place, and tend to dump his weapons in the trash bin when a weapon from another shop catches their eye, so why the hell should he bend over backwards for them, plus his prices are fair and the mass-produced weapons are still very high quality. None of his customers were ever cheated, they got exactly what they paid for, no more, no less.

The issue to me is that the aesop wasn't necessarily about cheating his customers (whatever the arc villains of that portion of the story felt) but more about his own hoarding his best products only to those who met his standards. Basically I feel like the reason the entry feels the aseop is broken is missing the point of the aesop.

For a bit of extra context: The storyline features main character Rein visiting the dwarven blacksmith Grantz. Rein's observational skill has him notice that the stuff on the sales floor isn't quite as good as it could be, prompting Grantz to show him the good stuff and later commissioning Rein and his group to find out why the mine he been getting his mithril from has suddenly dried up. The cause was adventurers who were upset after buying some of the shoddier products robbing the mine to deprive Grantz of his needed mithril. After learning this, Grantz does feel remorse about holding back on his prospective customers, but in more of a sense that he's a True Craftsman and, as a result, all his work should be top quality and he shouldn't be half-assing it.

Found this on Significant Green Eyed Red Head. RWBY is a World of Technicolour Hair setting, which disqualifies the work. I would normally have just removed this, but I removed this for the same reason back in 2020. It was added back at some point earlier this year. Am I able to go ahead and remove it again without edit warring?

  • RWBY has Pyrrha Nikos, who funnily enough bears a passing resemblance (and also shares a voice) with Agent Carolina. She's The Ace of her team, being a world-renowned talented fighter that is also beautiful, has been blessed with incredible opportunities and a supportive family. If that wasn't enough she also just so happens to be scouted as the perfect Fall Maiden replacement after the current one was assaulted by Cinder Fall. Unfortunately she would meet her end in Volume 3 in Cinder's hands.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

[up] Well, the trope doesn't require that the person to be evil in real life. It just requires that they "being portrayed more positively in the work of fiction"

In real life, Sylvia Nasar cheat on his wife, and then they get divorced for a time. In the film, They never divorce (and apparently he never cheated, but I'm not sure because I never saw the film).

I think that the example count.

I still dont think Divorce is the "omgevil!" thing the trope is supposed to be about. If it is, the trope should be taken to TRS. The cheating is, but the whole "Divorce is evil" plus the "Homosexuality is evil" vibe the example has makes me want to tear that example apart.
