Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Would this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AW9pklBXqk4&list=LLr0mUxwuq5kKuJSx7DUnsFQ) count as an example of the Stock Phrase "Not That Kind Of Partner", seeing as the phrase is implied, rather than stated?

Question: Is the following an example of Angry Fist-Shake? I found the exact moment in a short youtube video: link.

My write up:

  • In "Fly vs. Fly" from "Treehouse of Horror VIII" of The Simpsons, Bart is transformed into a fly with his human head. Fly!Bart tricks a spider into thinking that he's caught in his web. When he's about to be eaten, he slaps him and flies away. The spider watches him in anger, shaking his four legs in synchronized movement, probably swearing revenge.

Very much so. And since you already have both a description of the scene, and a clip showing it, you can include the clip in the example description.

Thanks. :-) I will include the link in my edit. Hopefully the vid won't get taken down or anything.

Edit: The example is even included on the page. I don't see why I over-looked it. Oh well.

@102 RE: Not That Kind of Partner

I think that counts, but I don't know what the current policy on stock phrases is. If I'm not mistaken, that's precisely why there is no new stock phrases rule. The trope occurs, but not the exact same phrase. I'd say it might be OK to list your example.

I'm currently working with another editor on improving Original War, and one of the problems that came up was how I'd worked a specific example into the wrong trope.

The particular example entails how a sniper in this game can take out the driver of a vehicle with contemptuous ease, and without damaging the vehicle; said vehicle then becomes available for capture. The other editor suggested the example be put under David Versus Goliath; would this be appropriate?

This happened because Tim had made a mistake.

That doesn't sound like David Versus Goliath at all. Unless it's a weak sniper and the driver of the vehicle is a giant. Just taking out the driver and not the vehicle is just a matter of actually hitting the driver. It doesn't sound much like a trope. Unless it's a fully armoured vehicle like a tank or an APC of some kind, and the sniper doesn't have armour piercing ammo.

As I recall, the game doesn't really have tanks in that sense, as each vehicle is cobbled together from prefabbed materials sent from the future in boxes about two cubic meters in volume. I'm pretty sure they don't have tank armor in there.

Game mechanically, vehicles are not that great a threat; they will generally win against infantry, but only one-on-one. When a unit attacks a vehicle, both the vehicle and its driver is damaged, and if either dips below a certain health level, the driver is ejected. The sniper leaves the vehicle mostly intact, and fills a special niche in that way.

This happened because Tim had made a mistake.

I don't think How To Train Your Dragon should be on the list of Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl but I'm not sure. It says that Astrid is very smart but it's not about being smart and I don't think she would be described as energetic.

Nocturna Since: May, 2011

Hm... Astrid is not energetic (in the sense that she's way too reserved to be anywhere near Genki Girl), but she is essentially a Big Guy. Hiccup is the nerdy non-fighter and Astrid is the rough-and-tumble warrior. So I guess it depends how flexible the trope is.

The laconic is "The Genki Girl and the Only Sane Man pair up." I'd like to delete it on the grounds that he might be savvy but she's not energetic. The girl is also supposed to be "too busy trying to have fun." From what I remember Astrid is strong but angry.

Astrid's goal is to become a dragonfighter, not to "have fun". Calling her a Genki Girl is radically missing the point.

RL example I added to Nothing Is Scarier based on news reports this morning:

  • Possibly invoked by US law enforcement in response to the locating of suspects in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings and said suspects' subsequent gun battle with police. The greater Boston area was placed on lockdown, making it resemble a ghost town, and residents reported it's quite scary to see a usually busy urban and suburban area completely deserted apart from the occasional police car. This may or may not have been intentional to help encourage residents to stay home.

Valid use of Nothing Is Scarier?

No. Nothing Is Scarier is not about there really being "nothing" there, but about the fact that knowing, or feeling sure that there is something there, when there is nothing visible is scarier that actually seeing what's there.

Stephen King said that when a "big scary thing" is implied to be present but not actually shown at first, when the audience does finally see it, it's almost never as scary as what they imagined it would be, and therefore the reveal tends to be a letdown — whatever they actually show is unlikely to be worse than what we imagined.

Most of the Real Life Examples are poor examples. There really is nothing there to be scared of.

I have an issue with this example, which I suspect was either shoehorning or somebody didn't read the description. I don't know the show in question, so I'm not entirely sure and I thought I should ask. It's possibly spoileriffic for people who follow The Vampire Diaries as it concerns Tragic Bromance which is a Death Trope.

  • The Vampire Diaries: Stefan and Damon oh so much. After they died and became vampires they have such an up and down and chaotic relationship.

From this I get they are both vampires and still interact, which makes me think they don't fit. However, its character sheet words it a bit differently, and it makes me less sure.

Stafan

  • Tragic Bromance: Stefan's relationship and brotherhood with Damon is the epitome of this. During their human lives, in the episode 1x20, it was shown that Stefan had witnessed Damon getting shot and dying right in front of his eyes. Almost immediately afterwards, Stefan was shot and killed as well. It was after the tragedy of both Stefan and Damon getting shot, that triggered their transformation into vampires.

Damon

  • Tragic Bromance: With Stefan. Stefan has watched Damon tragically die back in 1864 when he was shot by their father, Giuseppe.

I PM'd the troper who added the wick to the trope page and she admitted she was merely cross-wicking.

Opinions?

The Seven Heavenly Virtues are all female. With the exception of Sheryl, the Seven Deadly Sins are male.

I thought of putting this under Female Angel, Male Demon, but that trope deals with angels and demons, while this situation involves anthropomorphism of the Seven Heavenly Virtues and Seven Deadly Sins.

Traumatic Haircut. Some examples from Real Life mention when people lose hair due to chemo. Would examples from fiction count as well, e.g. when a Littlest Cancer Patient lose her hair because of brain surgery? The description doesn't mention the medical setting, but that's hardly voluntary. But not absolutely forced on the person because it's necessary. Do you think it counts?
