Real Life section maintenance (New Crowner 19 Feb 2024)

Go To

Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the mods to add the trope via this thread.

This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.

Common problems include:

Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.

If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.

If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.

Before adding to the crowner:

  • The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
  • There must be support from others in thread.
  • Any objections should be addressed.
  • Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.

When adding to the crowner:

  • Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
  • Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
  • An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).

In order for a crowner to pass:

  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • There must be a 2:1 ratio
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
  • Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP index
  • Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page

Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need crowner vote.

Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.

After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

NRLEP tag:

LRLEO tag:

%%The following restrictions apply: [list restriction(s) here]

Notes:
  • This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
  • Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
  • As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
  • The [[noreallife]] tag doesn't currently work. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. However, there's been some staff conversation (Feb 2024) about what a new technical solution might look like, so we'd advise against deleting these from pages, at least until we have a decision as to whether it'll be fixed or replaced.

We've added a Crowner over on the RL policy thread.

If approved, that would empower this thread to run future crowners on restricting some, but not all, RL examples - e.g. no politicians or no adult film performers.

I wouldn't expect this to be used too often, and we'd need to make a case for restricting examples in this way - but there are some rules that have already been discussed and would probably be immediately proposed if it's approved.

Please comment or vote there if you have a view.

Hello, requesting that my newly-launched trope Token Good Cop be added to the NRLEP index, given that it's a morality trope and requires an entire police force to be corrupt/villains.

[down] Thanks for that.

Would you say Slave Mooks is impossible/narrative because IRL there are no "mooks?" All the examples are just regular slaves.

I noticed real people with alliterative name are commonly relied on adoption or nickname; so, people with genuine AN aren't that common. And this is the question, can Real Life section allowed in Alliterative Name page with real name?

Calling Porn Names for NRLEP.

25 total votes, +21 (Yeas:23 Nays:2), 11.50 : 1

Porn Names: Not a breach of policy, but potentially NSFW and the real people using these stage names are actively trying to keep them separate from the rest of their career. Added Jan 09, 2024.

I'm not talking about NSFW, but I just said if majority of people with AN in RL aren't birth/real name.

Isn’t A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing a morality trope? We might have to put it on the crowner.

    Real Life
  • Juvenile piranhas insinuate themselves into schools of other fishes, finding safety from larger predators in the crowd. They also feed off their non-piranha schoolmates, biting off pieces of the fins of unsuspecting companions.
  • Most fish would avoid attacking a Cleaner Wrasse and instead allow it to eat their parasites. The False Cleaner Wrasse's appearance resembles the real thing, allowing it to stay relatively safe while biting off pieces of fins from victims expecting a cleaning.
  • Some types of livestock-guarding dog, such as the Great Pyrenees or Kuvasz, have been bred to look like sheep so they won't scare the herds they're supposed to be protecting. This also hides them from wolves, who get a surprise when the dog interferes with their hunting.
  • In the United States Air Force, there is an entire Fighter Wing that earned its nickname from an operation based on this concept. During The Vietnam War, North Vietnamese MiGs were pouncing on American F-105 Thunderchiefs, older, clumsier fighters that had been relegated to doing bombing missions. The 8th Tactical Fighter Wing, under the leadership of Robin "The Wolf" Olds, launched an operation where F-4 Phantoms would fly the same routes as the F-105s, flying close together so that two Phantoms would resemble a single Thunderchief on the North Vietnamese pilots' radar. When the unwary North Vietnamese pilots closed to engage what they thought were vulnerable bombers, they realized, often too late, that they had blundered into an ambush. Ever since then, the 8th TFW (now simply known as the 8th Fighter Wing) has been called "The Wolfpack."
  • "Auxiliary cruisers" are merchant vessels with concealed armament that are used for one of two things:
    • Q-ships intended to lure enemy submarines into attacking them while surfaced. Theoretically also useful against small surface vessels, but the one time a Q-ship got involved in a scuffle with a surface vessel its opponent was a battleship.
    • On the flip side there are commerce raiders, ex-merchant ships intended to surprise and capture/destroy other merchant ships with their hidden armament. In one case one of these (Kormoran) managed to lure a suspicious cruiser (Sydney) Into getting so close the former was able to surprise the late into sinking her with all hands (Kormoran latter sank as well but most of the crew escaped onto lifeboats and were later rescued).
  • "Sleeper" are high-powered cars with restrained styling, usually using the bodywork of a normal vehicle. The 2003 Mercury Marauder was a modern four-door 300hp+ muscle car, that shared the same body as a run-of-the-mill Ford Crown Victoria - a Boring, but Practical police cruiser and taxi - the only thing identifying it as a sports car being the dual exhaust. Tuning can turn even the most unassuming cars into speed monsters, such as this Honda Insight blowing the doors of a V8 Camaro.
  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has used this analogy word-for-word to describe openly moderate Iranian President Hassan Rouhani (claiming his predecessor, the far-more conservative Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, was a blatant "wolf in wolf's clothing").
  • The Plains tribes and possibly other Prehistoric hunters would approach herds on all fours and covered in deer, bison, or wolf skins, in order to keep the animals from recognizing them as human and fleeing earlier.
  • An advertisement for a flu vaccine shows a wolf in actual sheep's wool passing through a crowd and infecting everyone with the flu while saying "Don't mind me. I'm just the flu. I'm harmless, really." Obviously, the flu isn't harmless as the wolf explains how he could cause more serious complications that could hospilitaze people with pneumonia or heart attacks. Upon entering a hospital, the wolf encounters a nurse who isn't fooled by them and has a box of flu shots ready, which scares the wolf off.

Eh some people think it's The Same, but More for Bitch in Sheep's Clothing, but the Wolf doesn't have to be evil, just more threatening then they appear to be.

An Anti-Hero who pretends to be helpless to target those who prey on the helpless is an example.

None of the examples seem that bad. Only one even pertains to a person, and it's just a quote about them.

Since Asian Drivers is NRLEP for being a stereotype, why not Women Drivers too? Some of the more statistical facts could be briefly discussed in the intro, the way Asian Drivers does it, and we really don't need to keep circulating sexist jokes.

New trope Blaming the Tools might have to be added to NRLEP.

There's nothing there just yet. However. I remember having discussions with my mother about how people tend to blame guns for mass shootings instead of the people wielding them, and I can easily see someone adding that as a real-life example. And I think it's safe to say that we do not need arguments about real-life gun violence on a trope page.

It's also a rather general or possibly too common trope in real life.

We can't crowner stuff that has no RL section. The fact that it wasn't made NRLEP in the TLP process means it's too late to do it now.

Pinned post updated to reflect the ATT discussion on NRLEP warnings in trope descriptions.

No other significant changes, but rephrased a couple of sentences to trim wording/cruft.

There'll probably be a more significant rewrite when we call the current NRLEP "Some RLE" policy Crowner.

It was decided in the policy thread to allow this thread to enact partial bans on RL examples in addition to the existing ability to enact full bans. I figured I'd mention that in this thread due to this thread being more active, and because the draft for the index for partial bans (located at Sandbox. Some Real Life Examples Only) is still a work in progress, and the name may be subject to change as well if anyone thinks we should have another crowner for what to call it in the Wiki Talk thread.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.

Crown Description:

Vote up to either forbid all real life examples (No Real Life Examples Please) or forbid real life examples for specific subjects (Limited Real Life Examples Only); vote down to Keep Real Life Examples. To add a trope to a No Real Life Examples Please index or the Limited Real Life Examples Only index, its crowner option must meet the following criteria:
  • Stable 2:1 ratio needed for NRLEP or LRLEO
  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple of extra days to see if more votes come in.

After you bring up a trope for discussion, please try to wait at least a day or so for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

If an item has a (CLOSED) note, there is no need to vote on it: the result has already been decided and it's no longer up for discussion.
