Removing complaining, bashing and other negativity from the wiki

Go To

Inspired by this thread, I've noticed that this wiki doesn't have a dedicated cleanup thread for negativity.

As we all know, Complaining About Shows You Don't Like, Creator Bashing and other negativity isn't desired on the wiki, except in a few selected areas like reviews and several Darth Wiki pages (and even then, with limitations). And yet, it's one of the most common sins wiki contributors can make.

So, if you find a page, TLP or discussion whose content seems like a straight-up insult or any other bitching - including complainy soapboxing -, you might ask here for help with removing said content.

The sandbox for this project is located at Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining.

[up][up] I agree that anything concerning fan-made comics should not be there, though they might make for a Fanon entry if some of them become influential among fans. That Hype Aversion entry is misuse.

Stories don't tell us monsters exist; we knew that already. They show us that monsters can be trademarked and milked for years.

I think the fanmade comments were officially approved as "canon" as part of the contest (Homestuck has a weird relationship with canon), in which case I think they could count.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

I'm currently on a Tekken binge, thanks to Tekken 8, and I'm seeking to trim out for better clearance in Tekken's Unintentionally Unsympathetic section before cross-wicking.

But even if I have my own misgivings on Nina Williams, I think that the current entry about her is a bit too... bash-y (and a bit of a wall of text that could use bullet and indentations)? Here's her old entry in the VG section of Unintentionally Unsympathetic:

  • Nina Williams is always, always, always presented as a super-cool badass who we're supposed to root for in her rivalry against her twin sister Anna; the two animated films based on the series and the spin-off game Death by Degrees all depict Nina as the heroine and Anna as a craven, pathetic villainess. The main series, though, has shown Nina be extremely vicious, cruel and abusive towards her sister, even on occasions where Anna has sincerely tried in good faith to bury the hatchet between them, and has gone so far as to outright murder Anna —along with numerous other innocent people— in at least one [non-canon] ending. If Nina's Character Shilling weren't so obvious, it'd be easy to assume that we were meant to sympathize with Anna instead (while Anna's certainly no saint herself, she comes off as amoral at worst instead of, y'know, evil).
Tekken 7 takes this further, as the reason Nina’s default outfit is a torn wedding dress (beyond Fanservice) is that it’s Anna’s wedding dress, which she used infiltrate her sister’s wedding with a G Corporation executive with mafia ties and murdered him at the altar. While it’s explained that Nina was just following orders, it just adds to her aforementioned cruelty towards Anna, whose rage against her sister is more sympathetic than it already was. Then immediately after fleeing the wedding, Nina runs into her son Steve and — after explaining his birth — rejects him as her child since her egg was taken and fertilised to make a Super-Soldier without her consent. Nina’s dislike of Steve just for being born is hardly fair since it’s not his fault, and her rejection of him comes of as petty cruelty note . Also not helping matters is the fact that Heihachi was the one who ordered her egg to be taken while she was a Human Popsicle, yet Nina serves him faithfully. Both cases paint Nina not as a badass Dark Action Girl but as a cold-hearted sociopath who couldn’t care less about her own family. In all, Nina perfectly illustrates how "badass" can be an interesting character trait, but it is not an inherently likable or sympathetic one.

Now here's my proposal

  • Thanks to Character Perception Evolution, Nina Williams ends up being considered this. She was originally supposed to be the 'super-cool badass Femme Fatale' who is considered the much more better, sympathetic sister compared to Anna Williams, with several spin-offs depicting her in a more heroic light. In the canon games, however, this is undermined with several factors:
    • Nina is much more vicious and abusive towards Anna. While she always wins their conflict, she does that with no remorse and takes a lot of time to rub her victory against Anna, with their latest squabble ending up with Nina murdering Anna's fiancee while disguising as her with a wedding dress. At that point, Nina comes off to the fans as more of a vicious Big Sister Bully than a cool Femme Fatale, and fans generally fare less against bullies.
    • Nina really doesn't give a damn about family, as shown with her relationship with Steve Fox. She goes from 'being unable to shoot him' in 4 (as a show of her lingering humanity) to 'callously rejecting him as her child'. While her excuse can be valid (her egg cells were taken against her consent, so Steve would look like a Child by Rape), she did that with no tinge of remorse that fans sympathized with Steve more for being rejected by the closest thing he could call 'mother'.
    • And finally? By Tekken 8, she goes under the service of Kazuya Mishima, who at that point has proven himself to be the literal devil trying to conquer the world, and it's all because 'he hired her'. At that point, Nina has been so over her role of 'assassin for hire' that it's a bit hard for the fans to see her as this 'root-able sympathetic badass Femme Fatale', but more like the 'Will cut her papa's throat for a nickel' kind of dangerous sociopath who'd look like a straight-up villain, where Just Following Orders (her only excuse at this point) just won't cut it anymore.

I try at least to be more on the point and skims out the unnecessary rambling. But, what do you think, are these safe enough to be crosswicked to the Tekken YMMV page?

Don't worry, I'll get to Jin, Heihachi and Kazumi next (and the brother trope of this, featuring Anna and Kazuya). But let's do it one by one.

From WesternAnimation.Ralph Breaks The Internet:

  • Took a Level in Dumbass: Ralph became a complete idiot with almost no intelligence whatsoever, that he can't even make logical decisions anymore and can't even understand basic English anymore. For starters, when Mr. Litwak put in the Wi-Fi router in the arcade outlet, he mispronounces it as “Whiffy” and "Why-Fee", which leads to Sonic having to correct him. On the contrary, it’s somewhat understandable because Ralph was made in a game from the 1980’s, and the internet was not yet invented until the 1990’s, where Sonic was first created. At another point, when one of the kids clearly says "e-Bay", he somehow hears it as "eboy", which becomes the main example of him not being able to understand basic English throughout the film. He also mispronounces "Google" as "goggles" at one point. There were occasions in the first movie where he was acted dense, but he was not a total idiot. In those cases, he was just oblivious or ignorant.

I get his characterization in the movie is divisive but this entry feels a LOT like flat-out complaining when he personally was more at the levels he was in the first movie

Yeah, seems like a cut to me. "Ralph doesn't understand internet terms because he is first experiencing the Internet right now" is not exactly "this character as an idiot."

I'd also love to see the OP explain how "eBay" "Google" and "Wi-Fi" are "basic english."

Clearly they've literally never interacted with a Boomer before.

Besides, isn't he a video game character In-Universe? From the 80's? Who's never been to the real world and would therefore know nothing about it outside of what's in the arcade?

Terminate with extreme prejudice.

From ProphecyTwist.Literature concerning Warrior Cats:

  • In the third series, The Power of Three, the prophecy "There will be three, kin of your kin, with the power of the stars in their paws" does not refer to Firestar's three grandkits Jayfeather, Lionblaze, and Hollyleaf. No, Hollyleaf is dropped from the prophecy entirely (part of the reason she dived into a collapsing tunnel on purpose just to escape the life she knows), in favor of one of Firestar's nephew's daughter's kits. And only ONE of the kits. The other is left out of the prophecy, causing her to make some bad decisions because everybody loves her sister so much more. NICE JOB STARCLAN. THE PROPHECY WAS SO CLEAR YOU ONLY SCREWED OVER 2 CATS.

Calm down, entry. No need to yell. How can we make this writeup more objective?

[up]x6 The Internet actually existed before the 1990s. The World Wide Web however was invented in the 1990s, which allowed the Internet to be accessible to the public, rather than just to governments, militaries, and academics. In fact, these groups have been using the Internet since as early as 1969 as ARPANET.

TL;DR: The Internet is Older Than They Think.

It would be great to correct that.

So remember when I told you guys that YMMV for Manga.Himegoto looked like somebody complaining about the anime. Well, I decided to get a consensus on how to clean it up.

    Cut or Rewrite
  • Audience-Alienating Premise: The anime is a wacky ecchi comedy about a feminine boy...who is bullied, sexually harassed, and forced to crossdress by three assertive student council members. Now you know the first reason why the anime bombed (the second being the truly shoddy quality, making some people suspect it was actively sabotaged).
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • The Himegoto+ cast, to the point that many wish they were the main characters. They were even considered one of the anime's sole bright spots.
    • No.1 for being a Nice Girl who crossdresses by choice.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Hime and Tadokoro, due to 18+ being The Scrappy to most of the readers.
  • Fetish Retardant: The skeevy, non-consensual nature of most of the fanservice. Unless you're into both crossdressing AND humiliation, you'll probably be turned off.
  • Just Here for Godzilla:
    • Many watched this just because it's technically the first Otokonoko Genre anime. Most of them were fairly disappointed and those that weren't are generally pissed because it has been blamed for killing off any further otokonoko anime.
    • A lot of readers stayed for the Himegoto+ cast.
  • Questionable Casting: All the crossdressing boys are voiced by women who make no attempt to sound male.
  • Retroactive Recognition: bkub wrote a chapter for the anthology comic a year or two before he started Pop Team Epic.
  • Squick: Kaguya is openly sexually attracted to his own brother. Just...ew.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Hime and Kaguya's parents never appear and that plotline is rarely addressed.
  • Values Dissonance:
    • People unfamiliar with Japanese gender roles may be uncomfortable with the way Hime is treated.
    • The show goes out of its way to keep with its Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male leanings, and while this is semi-typical in Japanese comedies, it's taken to uncomfortable and cruel heights here.
  • The Woobie: Poor, poor Hime. He really needs a hug.

(And yes, this is the whole YMMV).

For Himegoto, I think the Audience-Alienating Premise should go because it's not the premise but the execution that made it fail. Not sure about Questionable Casting, the whole point was to have boys passing as girls. Remove They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot because it's clear that plot was never introduced, their absence is the set-up for the whole story. I also think Values Dissonance should go, because it flopping in Japan indicates it wasn't received much better there than anywhere else. For Squick, it should be enough to cut those last two words.

Pokémon GO had an update recently thats been hated across the board for changing the player models. There's an entry for it on the YMMV page on They Changed It, Now It Sucks!, but it reeks of complaining and is poorly written (it linked to Unfortunate Implications before someone removed it).

  • The April 2024 update introduces new Trainer avatar models that is near-universally met with backlash for the drastic changes, with the body shapes made more androgynous/chubby, the hair and skin tones looking more desaturated, and overall veering close to the Uncanny Valley. On top of being released with overlooked visual bugs and without the option to change back to the old models, the official announcement post on X accompanying the change added more disdain to its perception; the text "your avatar can now look even more like YOU!" coming off more as offensive to players who are unflattered by the new models.

Would this be a better writeup for it?

  • The April 2024 update overhauled the game's graphics, featuring new overworld backgrounds and avatar customization options. While the new backgrounds were well-received, the new avatar models were met with intense backlash from the userbase. Among the complaints were the more realistic faces being seen as creepy, the hair and skin tones being desaturated, and the new models having overlooked visual bugs.
