Removing complaining, bashing and other negativity from the wiki

Go To

Inspired by this thread, I've noticed that this wiki doesn't have a dedicated cleanup thread for negativity.

As we all know, Complaining About Shows You Don't Like, Creator Bashing and other negativity isn't desired on the wiki, except in a few selected areas like reviews and several Darth Wiki pages (and even then, with limitations). And yet, it's one of the most common sins wiki contributors can make.

So, if you find a page, TLP or discussion whose content seems like a straight-up insult or any other bitching - including complainy soapboxing -, you might ask here for help with removing said content.

The sandbox for this project is located at Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining.

A page for the upcoming series, Bel-Air, was made, which is a dramatic reboot of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air based on a YouTube short film parodying the concept of dramatic reboots.

The YMMV page is nothing but complaining, and it's not even out yet.

  • Narm: The "Kingdom" teaser for many in which it uses some of the original lyrics in a slow serious tone while Will swims through objects pertaining to his life like basketball and the fuzzy dice while a haunting melody plays. A majority of fans couldn't take it seriously and found it laughable then anything.
  • Tainted by the Preview: The teaser had fans scratching their head what exactly this series was going to be. But the offical trailer gained a lot of detractors once it dropped upon seeing how drama-focus it's going.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: To say the least, fans of the original instantly cried foul when this was announced, not wanting such a popular beloved sitcom series to go full on serious, plus finding it odd to make a reboot for a series that was essentially a vehicle for Will Smith in his heyday (though he is producing this one). The official trailer didn't help to alleviate those fears.

The Protomen enhanced my life.

See if they can be rewritten at all, though a WMG page full of complaining is definitely suspect, especially if it's meta.

The WMG page is entirely complaining. I tried to rewrite the Drinking Game and Special Effect Failure pages, but canceled the edit because I felt every entry was too negative.

Euro Truck Simulator has this entry under That One Level, seemingly written by someone with a personal vendetta against the Department for Transportation:

  • Used to keeping up high speeds on the motorway? Well, guess what - the UK government is infamous in real life for scamming its own citizens in insidious ways, and ETS2 is no exception. On the other side of the channel you'll only be speed-fined by random cops and at some traffic lights; in the UK there are sudden drops in the speed limit followed by high fines - and speed cameras are everywhere, whether you're entering or leaving town, crossing a bridge, passing some roadworks, or just randomly spotted around junctions. There are also un-posted cameras at traffic lights and roadworks. And roundabouts. If you're a Brit you won't even notice the sudden hike, but if you're not, you'll be left crying. On the plus side, British highways have a lot less in the way of kerbside rails, which makes ramps surprisingly merciful.

ROCEJ aside, the reason the UK is so awkward in-game with its speed cameras is because it's currently the oldest part of the map and so is crudely made by today's standards. It's not some kind of political statement.

[up]x6 The reactions I've seen to it so far have been pretty much split between people who are turned off by the premise of a gritty Fresh Prince reboot and people defending it from the initial negative reactions, so Tainted by the Preview might be valid, but I think it's too early for these to be listed since all we have right now is a trailer.

I got no response for this. It is for certain a knee-jerk reaction now as everyone seems to have gotten used to Mokey's redesign. Also we only had the teaser back then. The full trailer for the reboot of Fraggle Rock is out and I haven't seen anyone comment about Mokey's hair, just either hype or in the case of others like Arlo nervousness about it being a Tough Act to Follow.

WhyFandomCantHaveNiceThings.TV Tropes just saw a huge rewrite from troper GoldenSeals who added some snark and vitriol decrying the site for being not as fun anymore, something that the page had (surprisingly) avoided up until now. The opening line is a great example of this:

"This Very Wiki used to be a more permissive place. But as the site grew and people's cleverness slowly drained, a few rules were implemented that made the site run better but made things a little bit less fun."

It's also been rewritten to add parts describing the site as "we", which I'm not sure is allowed.

Having looked at the edits myself... I admit that the changes are too big for a single revert, so we may need a mod's help for a rollback.

[up][up] Agreed, we need a mod revert.

And if this is a recurring pattern, they may need to be reported in ATT.

[up] Didn't notice your comment Plasma, sorry. All the complaining can be removed. If the troper who added those entries has a recurring pattern of this, they can also be brought up in ATT.

On Discontinuity.Live Action TV:

  • Many fans of the rebooted Battlestar Galactica Do Not Talk about "Black Market". (Because you know that Apollo would totally abandon his pregnant girlfriend and never mention her again just to go to a hooker to placate his guilt over said incident.) Or "The Woman King". Ever.
    • The consensus among some fans is that the show ended with "Revelations", the last episode of the first half of Season 4. This means no mutiny, no revelation of who the fifth Cylon is, what Starbuck is, what the Head characters are, the backstory of the Final Five and the humanoid Cylons, that the Earth they find is not "our" Earth, the defeat of the Cylons, the resolution of Cally's murder, and the finding of Earth. That is a lot to toss out.
    • The latter half of the BSG finale is this for many. Not only does it end with a Time Skip that appears to imply that Hera was used as breeding stock for the human race, but it has the surviving Colonials throw their ships into the sun for no other reason than "technology is bad", deliberately crippling themselves in the process. And then there's the "God did it all" final scene...
    • Check out the 2009 Paley Center post-finale video, in which Ron Moore admits that he used up all of his initial ideas by the Season 2 finale, and everything after that was just written on the fly. And that he decided to kill and resurrect Starbuck mostly as a ratings gimmick, and he'd figure out why this happened later. And that he picked the Final Five Cylons based on shock value instead of plot logic. And that the entire reason they give up their technology is to explain making Hera mitochondrial Eve... and that the only reason they did that was in a desperate attempt to justify the amount of hype they'd been pouring into Hera since Season 2, without really knowing why she was important. And that he simply forgot what to do with President Roslin after Season 2 ended, and Mary McDonnell herself complained. And the point where he flat out likens his writing approach to freestyle jazz, making it up as he goes along, but his brilliance was in retroactively explaining how it all fit together - a textbook definition of The Chris Carter Effect... yeah... why isn't this on the front page for this trope again? The entire second half of the series met with widespread criticism.

There is no point to that last paragraph. I rewrote the whole thing to this:

  • Battlestar Galactica (2003):
    • Many fans of the series do not talk about "Black Market", which features Apollo abandoning his pregnant girlfriend and never mentioning her again just to go to a hooker to placate his guilt over said incident. Or "The Woman King", where everyone except Helo becomes inexplicably racist so the villain can carry out his actions in secrecy.
Okay, this Fight Scene Failure entry comes across as complaining and nitpicking. I think there's a salvageable entry to be found from all this, but I could use some opinions.

  • RWBY: While the show is built around having well-choreographed fights as its bread-and-butter, there have been notably egregious examples, namely some of the early tournament fights in Volume 3, along with a good chunk of the fights in Volumes 4-5.
    • It should be noted that the overwhelming majority of the terrible fights involve multiple characters attempting to use complex choreography at once while remaining in position for the cameras. More aggressive camera cuts and reaction shots were also introduced to some of the fights.
    • "Round One", the premiere episode of Volume 3, has RWBY striking poses to face the camera, resulting in a disjointed mess where RWBY and ABRN lose track of each other's positions during the fight, as seen in Fatmanfalling's diagram here.
    • The second episode of the volume, "New Challengers", sees JNPR fail to properly take cover against a sniper, and BRNZ patiently wait for their opponents and the commentator for exposition, before getting knocked out in a single blow. The fight between SSSN and NDGO sees plenty of intense close ups on the characters' faces, along with a lack of strategy that causes SSSN to lose a potential advantage, something Neptune points out. It isn't until the next two episodes, "A Brawl In The Family" and "Lessons Learned" that these issues are kept at a minimum for the remainder of Volume 3, barring "Never Miss A Beat".
    • Come Volumes 4 and beyond, however (where Rooster Teeth used Maya for every part of the animation process), came an increase in continuity errors and awkward choreography, especially in group fights against singular enemies. TheFloofArtist tracked down the first of many errors (91 during the Geist fight) in videos such as the one shown here.
    • The fights got progressively worse the longer the volume went on - the Nuckleavee fight at the end was the most inconsistent at 128 errors (123 continuity errors and 5 terrible animation/rendering screwups).
    • The most egregious example, however, has to be the last four episodes of Volume 5, from "The More The Merrier" to "Haven's Fate". During the Battle Of Haven, the fight was full of continuity errors, terrible animation and rendering, and poor decision making. YouTuber TheFloofArtist logged in the entire battle, complete with a map, at 210 errors.

One of the problems with these entries as written is that people have clearly sat down to try and find and list every single bit of animation error they can find, count them all up, and then make videos of it. However, the audience reaction itself isn't about counting animation and continuity errors if you sit down and actively search for mistakes, it's about fight scenes looking fake even on a casual watch.

There's also some degree of author intent that needs to be accommodated. As one entry admits, there is some lampshading in-universe that the students are bad fighters, especially by some of the adult Huntsmen. That doesn't change the fact that there is something we should be able to salvage here. It's just a question of revamping it.

I think the parent bullet point and first sub-bullet can be reworded and put together to form the basis of a single entry, with the videos linked in other sub-bullets just being listed as some examples of how the choreography, animation and continuity sometimes struggles.

However, that's the best I can come up with.

Can anyone help?
