This thread is for general discussion of page quotes, whether to change, move or remove them.
Unused quotes should be put on a Quotes Wiki page (just replace the namespace in the URL of the wiki page you are making a quotes page for with Quotes/) or, if they don't have an article, on Quotes Looking for an Article.
Image captions are discussed elsewhere and have their own thread in the Image Pickin' forum.

Company Cross References has a quote that's about 25% quote and 75% context for the quote. Is it just me or does it look kind of clunky?

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.definitely, and without the context it's just Fan Myopia. this one also seems difficult to get across concisely with just text
sorry to double post, but i just noticed Compressed Hair quotes another TV tropes page, which seems problematic. most pressingly, if the example is removed the quote becomes pointless, but also because i haven't seen a non-administrivia page quote TV tropes before, and i'm pretty sure it's bad form. i can't think of a replacement, but should it be removed regardless?
Yeah, I think quotes are only meaningful when it's from a source outside this wiki. Cut.
Reposting this just so it doesn't get lost at the bottom of the prior page:
So on Say Your Prayers, which is a trope where someone faces death or a dire situation and responding with a sincere prayer, the current quote is:
- "God! Buddha! Zeus! One of you guys do something! Help! Satan, you owe me!"
from Professor Farnsworth of Futurama. Not only does it kinda clash with the spirit of the trope, it's not the only place where it's being used; it also shows up on the newer trope Emergency Multifaith Prayer, where it fits the spirit much better.
So does anyone else think the quote needs to be changed, and if there are any ideas? From a quick look over the page, my first thought is the example from The Sandman, where an elderly Jewish man realizes that he's been talking with Death and decides to say a traditional prayer just before dying. Here's a potential draft of the quote if we want to include the full context.
- Harry: [After realizing he's been talking to Death herself] 'Scuse me, something I got to say. Always used to wonder if I would, but, y'know, what th' hey... Sh'ma Yisroel. Adonai elohaynu. Adonai e'hod. Hear me, o Israel. The Lord our God. The Lord is One. [dies]Harry's Ghost: It's good that I said the Sh'ma. My old man always said it guaranteed a place in Heaven. If you believe in Heaven...
Thoughts?
| Wandering, but not lost. | If people bring so much courage to this world...◊ |Quick question: are potholes allowed in quotes if the quote references a specific work or person? Just wanted to make sure.
back lolsorry i'd meant to reply to that but it slipped my mind, yeah i'd agree the current quote doesn't fit on Say Your Prayers but i don't think the replacement is suitable either, it's a bit lengthy
i believe so? it seems most examples of blue links in page quotes are due to Grandfather Clause but i know links are generally okay if they're referencing Trope Namers or if the links already existed in the quote source

The quote for Karmic Trickster relies on knowing the context and even then it's barely an example.
I'm tempted to remove it even without a replacement, but has anyone got any suggestions?
Looking through the tropes, I discovered that Minsky Pickup and Singing Telegram both have the same quote.
Minsky Pickup probably shouldn't have a quote because there's no way to convey the melody in text
What about this for New Media Are Evil? From the prophet Mohammed.
"The most evil matters are those that are newly invented, for every newly invented matter is an innovation. Every innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Hellfire."
To add further context, I've been reading this book, "The Trouble with Islam Today: A Muslim's Call for Reform in Her Faith" by Irshad Manji, and she complained that the middle east society hasn't fully evolved because traditionalist Islam prevented it from it, in her words, "a tribal-like mentality". In one chapter, she mentions this quote from the prophet, that has been used to justify any erasure from new things in Islamic society.
Is it fine, or do you think is controversial?

To win, you need to adapt, and to adapt, you need to be able to laugh away all the restraints. Everything holding you back. For some reason I think that such a quote would be well known if it were genuine. So I am asking [citation needed]
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanSadly, I don't have the book with me at work, so I can't quote her. I did make a note about it, so I know where it is. I would have to translate it to English, though.
Anyway, Mohammed's quote is Here. A haditz is not part of the The Qur'an, but is instead a saying the prophet said at one point, and is taken as of equal value to many Muslims. The quote isn't that well known due to being a haditz.
To win, you need to adapt, and to adapt, you need to be able to laugh away all the restraints. Everything holding you back.Given that you found this quote in the context of someone complaining about Islam, I'm gonna vote "too controversial".

To win, you need to adapt, and to adapt, you need to be able to laugh away all the restraints. Everything holding you back.I just changed the page quote for Epigraph for reasons stated in the previous page of this discussion. If anyone thinks it should be changed back I think this would be a good opportunity to say why.
I brought my book with me. I'm translating the part written by the author regarding Pokemon this time:
- Just a while ago, mullahs from many places of the middle East denounced the Pokémon' (the children's videogame) because they affirmed that is about a Japanese word that means "I'm Jewish". A Saudi cleric contributed the "Pokémon craze" to a "Jewish plot designed to force our little ones to renounce their faith and values, as well as distract them from more important things like scientific aspirations." The licentious little icons - and I don't mean the mullahs - earned a fatwa.Irshad Manji, The trouble with Islam today, chapter 5.
The other quote, the one from the prophet, I decided against it because, re-reading it, it doesn't really work. I thought this quote was good because it was similar to what happened in my country when I was a child, where multiple Evangelical pastors denounced the game as "satanic" (although in their insane ignorance, thought the name meant "Glory to Satan").
Regarding the paragraph, I cut the first sentence since it barely had to do with the New Media Are Evil context. It says: "The adoration by Muslims for occidental culture led to such a point that it generated a rumor about a Jewish conspiracy". Sure, it adds more context, but I'm unsure.

~Phantom Dusclops 92, since you adopted this trope, what do you think?
Feels good, don't it?^ Gotta add that.
The best character is always the one-shot disguise.Wacky Racing doesn't currently have a page quote, so I've been thinking of adding one. The only thing is that I'm not sure if the quote I'm planning to submit works well enough. This is the quote I was planning to submit:
- Ladies and gentlemen, I'd like to welcome you to what's sometimes been called an automotive counterpart to the Bay of Pigs.—Race organizer, The Cannonball Run
I have a small issue with the page quote for Wartime Cartoon.
The page is about, you know, propaganda cartoons, but the quote instead is talking about a propaganda comic.
The best character is always the one-shot disguise.yeah, cut that as irrelevant. i'd suggest putting it on the Propaganda Piece page but that's already got a much more succinct quote
Nightfall (1990). Two. Which one goes?

What should be the page quote for Monster.Fan Works?
yeah not feeling that quote, it's a bit long, but i agree the one already on the page doesn't fit. i'd be willing to just leave it blank
