YMMV / Gundam: Reconguista in G

Go To

  • Angst? What Angst?: Bell gets over killing Dellensen pretty quickly, judging by the absolute lack of moping in the following episodes. Averted in the movies where he is visibly torn up about it when confronted by Kerbes.
  • Awesome Music:
    • GARNiDELiA's "BLAZING" looks to be a properly catchy tune, in line with various opening themes of the franchise.
    • "G no Senkou" is probably the most upbeat, happy and catchy Gundam ending theme yet. TSUKAME PURAIDO, TSUKAME SUCCESS!
  • Broken Base:
    • The narrative aspect of the show tend to be a somewhat hot topic at times, with a vocal minority defending the show saying that people are impatient idiots not able to understand the show while the other side calls the show a nonsensical disaster with those defending it only blinded by rose-tinted goggles due to Tomino's involvement. There is also a third group that see the show as something of an entertaining mess.
    • Is the series really suitable for children as Tomino's claimed? Some fans and people in the anime industry have called him out for this as noted in the What Do You Mean, It's for Kids? section below. Others defended Tomino's statements by pointing there are plenty of mech shows like Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Eureka Seven that are similarly idealistic despite having some shockingly dark moments.
    • The character and art designs by Kenichi Yoshida of Eureka Seven fame. They're either seen as refreshingly unique break from the usual aesthetics of Gundam or ugly and unfaithful to the core look of the franchise.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Klim became one of the most popular characters straight from his introduction, and Dellensen soon became a fan favorite as well, making his death all the more heartbreaking.
    • For a comparatively minor character, Steer has grown quite popular due to her attractiveness and tendency to shout her lines in uniquely accented yet comprehensible English.
  • Fandom Rivalry: With Gundam Build Fighters Try. For the first time, two Gundam shows are airing at the same time, so naturally there are arguments over which is better.
    • What also doesn't help is the perception that since both shows are running at the same time, that means resources are being split between them. That means if either series suffers a drop in quality, fans of one series will immediately blame the other for "stealing" it from them.
      • This is certainly not helped by the fact that the original team that handled Gundam Build Fighters was transferred to work on Reco while a new team was brought in to do Try, giving GBF fans more ammo.
  • Fan Nickname:
    • Girl!Loran or Genderbent!Loran for Raraiya Monday, due to being similar to Loran Cehack in hair and skintone.
    • Gundam Seven or 'Eureka Gundam', due to the character designs (both by Kenichi Yoshida).
  • He's Just Hiding: Barara is assumed by many people (from the fans to her own VA) to have survived the destruction of Yggdrasil, simply because they think that an escape pod was briefly seen coming out from the explosion.
  • Improved Second Attempt: The compilation movies are generally seen as a massive improvement over the original TV series by reworking some more nonsensical plotlines and giving the necessary expansion to others that were sorely lacking in information or impact in the original run. While they don't fix all the shows issues, they are generally seen as far more watchable and the ideal way to watch the show.
  • It's Short, So It Sucks!: One of the series' main complaints is it has a very convoluted story with a lot happening that has little to no explanations or logic. For instance, on many many occasions, characters are taken prisoner, or find themselves behind enemy-lines, yet are never treated as such and just freely roam as if they are a member of the crew, and seemingly just leave to go somewhere else without struggle. A lot of this can be attributed to how Tomino had plans for the series to be longer, and would have more time for fluent actions, but had to compress and settle the story to fit in a smaller number of episodes due to his old age preventing him from investing in a longer series.
  • It Was His Sled: Bellri and Aida are brother and sister.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Supposedly, Tomino doesn't like the recent trend of cute little sisters in anime/manga and wants to make Cool Big Sisters big again. Coupled with speculation about Aida playing that role to Bellri, some say this show will usher in... "the Age of Onee-san".
    • Not helped by the fact that Gundam Build Fighters Try has Mirai Kamiki, the Cool Big Sis of the protagonist Sekai Kamiki. And both shows are running in the same season.
    • The scene where Klim relieves himself in a toilet-equipped mobile suit while in the midst of battle earned the nickname "The Toilet Battle."
    • The Wuxia giving G-Arcane the German suplex.
    • Chuchumy. Poop poop. (Actual line from amnesiac!Raraiya.)
    • "Oh my SU-Cord!" As followers of SU-Cordism many characters swear on the Space Umbilical Cord in a manner similar to Jesus Christ.
    • "I am a genius!" "Oh, no!"
    • "Recognuista in P", due to Yu Shimamura voicing Aida at the same time she was voicing Go! Princess Pretty Cure's Haruka Haruno/Cure Flora. A lot of crossover fanart were made.
    • The rather frequent use of airbags in the various mobile suits have become something of recurring joke among fans.
  • Narm:
    • "The world... is not square!!" (An overly-literal translation of a Japanese idiom roughly meaning "Things aren't so black and white.")
    • Wilmit's random laugh upon seeing a mounted hippo head in Episode 7.
    • Rockpie's second mobile suit is named the Gaitrashnote . Try to rewatch all of his scenes and take him seriously after that.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap:
    • Noredo was initially seen as an unlikable character by the second episode by fans, using a slingshot to hit another person in the butt while they're dangling from a height where a fall could kill them and telling them not to stick their butt out. Noredo's gradually gotten a better standing over the series, as she now acts far less bitchy and more supportive toward Bellri and Raraiya. This especially helped in Episode 6 after Bellri realized he killed Dellensen, as she was quick to try and comfort him.
      • Her popularity among fans received a even bigger boost in the latter half of the series, becoming more involved in the shows plot and having used her slingshot skills to disarm the engineers guarding the G-Lucifer so that she could steal it with Manny, and even upgrading in status afterwards to becoming the Lucifer's main gunner.
    • Aida also initially falls into The Scrappy status during the series proper. While viewers look well upon her as a character, her unflattering performance in the G-Arcane (which has been compared with such non-favorites as Fa Yuiri, Roux Louka and Sochie Heim) have turned many off to her as a pilot. If it weren't for the likes of Emma Sheen, Haman Karn or Marbet Fingerhat, one would believe Tomino has a thing for Faux Action Girls. That said, the From the Past to the Future OVA does a good job attempting to highlight her skills as a badass pilot in her own right.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: The series betrays that it was made in the 2010's with Wilmit using a Segway in one shot, something often seen as a joke and ultimately died, never becoming as prolific as was originally intended.
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: Tomino in the interviews said G-Reco is intended for children. Granted, the series is decently lighthearted in atmosphere, brightly colored, and relatively idealistic. But it also killed off some prominent supporting characters within the first few episodes, and features a shockingly dark backstory in which cannibalism was legal. "Kill 'Em All" Tomino is clearly still in top form.
