Horrortale is a fangame of Undertale. It was released to GameJolt in 2018 by HTTG Team.
The game takes place in the aftermath of a Neutral run of Undertale. In this universe, Undyne has become queen after Asgore's death and instilled a new rule: all humans that come into the Underground must be killed and eaten. You play as a little girl, Aliza, who is unfortunate enough to fall into the Underground at this state.
The game is based off the webcomic of the same name, which came out a few years before it.
Production on the game was officially cancelled in March of 2023.
Horrortale contains examples of:
- Affably Evil: Toriel is very kind and motherly to the human, despite Flowey's warnings at the beginning. You get a reminder of how much of a threat she is when she kills the thing hiding in the leaves in the Ruins.
- Ambiguous Situation: Did Toriel give you food poisoning from the pie on purpose? Or was it a simple mistake caused by her Sanity Slippage?
- Blatant Lies:Toriel: Nothing much has changed here over the years.
- Bloodier and Gorier: Than the game it's based on, Undertale.
- Blood-Splattered Warrior: The opening cutscene depicts Undyne as this after starting the ban on humans.
- Corrupted Character Copy: All of the characters in the Underground are supposedly this. Taken in an interesting direction with Flowey, who was changed from a sadistic megalomaniac to the Only Sane Man in the underground.
- Crapsack World: The Underground has become this after a neutral run. It has become a dangerous and cannibalistic place run by a murderous Undyne, far removed from the fun and light-hearted underground of Undertale. This is reflected in Flowey's changed motto: "It's eat or be eaten."
- Cyclops: Flowey only has one big eye.
- Establishing Series Moment: It's telling when you open up the game, see Flowey, and he warns you not to scream because someone might hear you. Then, immediately as he's established as an actual helping hand this time around, he's killed by Toriel.
- FaceāHeel Turn: Flowey has undergone this because of the changes made to the Underground.
- Gosh Dang It to Heck!: Aliza calls the bullies that forced her to climb the mountain "dumbheads".
- Hand Wave: Toriel's butterscotch candy doesn't hurt you, even though her pie will give you food poisoning. Then again, there's a chance this was intentional.
- Innocently Insensitive: Flowey can be this at times.
- He calls you the "clumsy and stupid type" for falling down the mountain.
- He also calls you the "saddest human he's ever seen" after the cutscene.
- Nothing Is Scarier: During your trek to Toriel's home, you hear a scream from deep in the Ruins. You never find the source of the scream.
- Only Sane Man: Interestingly, Flowey. The hostile environment of the Underground has turned him from a threat to the one being threatened.
- Pet the Dog: Toriel is very kind and motherly to Aliza, like her presence in Undertale.
- Portmantitle: As is common with most Undertale fan works. (Horror + Undertale)
- Sanity Slippage: Everyone in the Underground has undergone some sort of this after the events of a Neutral run of Undertale.
- Shrinking Violet: Aliza is this in spades. She's very shy and withdrawn and wears a sad expression for most of the game. After she warms up to Toriel, she smiles a lot more.
- To Serve Man: The new motto of the Underground following the Neutral run is "it's eat or be eaten". Doubles with Monstrous Cannibalism, because this reflects the monsters eating each other as well as any humans that come down.
- Wham Shot: Toriel killing the thing hiding in the leaves. It's a shocking reminder of the darkness present in this game. Not to mention that afterwards, the ground is sprayed with dust.
- Would Hurt a Child: Everything in the Underground is trying to kill Aliza, a child between 9 and 12.
It's EAT or be EATEN.
