  • Acting for Two:
    • Sr. Pelo voices Skid, Pump, Frank, Molochnote , Lilanote , Ooga Booga, Roy's Uncle, Mr. Clown, and The Eyes of the Universe, among many others.
    • Kellen Goff voices the Fat Thief and Roy.
    • Coffinjockey voices the Thin Thief, John, and the Candy Dealer.
    • ElusiveVA voices Kevin, Jack, and Ross.
    • Brock Baker voices the Wheel of the Worst hosts from the end of "Unwanted Guest".
    • Smuggers voices the Sad Guy from the Happy Fella show, the newscaster that appears at the end of "Deadly Smiles", and Richard.
    • Lizzie Freeman voices Jaune, the fictional Happy Fella, and Michelle.
    • Zach Fuller voices Rick and the male actor from the movie in "Deadly Smiles".
    • Brandon Winckler voices Radford, Ignacio, and the kid in the devil costume similar to Bob's.
    • JohnnyUtah voices both of the Hobomen.
    • Elsie Lovelock voices Lilanote  and Carmen.
    • P.M. Seymour voices Mr. Wondernote , Father Gregor, and Mort Vivifico.
    • Gabe Velez voiced Robert and Streber in "Tender Treats". After Gabe was fired, Corey Wilder took over as both characters, in addition to his existing role as Ethan.
    • In "Hollow Sorrows", Alexander Katnik voices both Mayor Evermore and Moloch.
  • Approval of God: Sr. Pelo frequently retweets Spooky Month fanart to his Twitter account.
  • Ascended Fanon: One of the various cameo characters in "Deadly Smiles" is Robin*, an OC sibling for Robert created by Mildly Mischievous. Sr. Pelo liked her enough that he officially made her Robert's older sister.
  • The Character Ice Cream Bar: While no actual ice cream exists of the characters, the Universe's Eyes t-shirt comes with a keychain mimicking the treats, with The Eyes of the Universe being depicted as a funky looking thing on a stick, complete with it being slightly melted.
  • Cross-Dressing Voices:
    • In "It's spooky month", Lila was voiced by Sr. Pelo himself. Starting with "The Stars", however, Lila is instead voiced by Elsie Lovelock.
    • Ooga Booga is voiced by Sr. Pelo.
    • The male Dexter is voiced by the nonbinary Metamaniac.
    • All of the male Robert's voice actors have been genderqueer, with JpegNetworks and Corey Wilder being nonbinary, and Gabe Velez being transgender.
      • Wilder also voiced the male Ethan and will be voicing the male Streber (another Velez character) in upcoming media.
    • Lizzie Freeman voices the title character of the in-universe Happy Fella TV show, who, as the name would suggest, is a guy.
  • Descended Creator: Sr. Pelo voices many characters in this series, with the main ones being Skid, Pump, Frank, and Ooga Booga.
  • Development Gag:
    • The very first concepts for Skid and Pump were of a short kid in a baseball cap and a taller kid wearing a beanie. This idea of kids in hats was later revisited for the Hatzgang, now with a third member wearing a backwards cap.
    • Two background characters in "Hollow Sorrows" are scrapped characters meant for "Tender Treats", an engineer and a girl in a hoodie. Humorously, they appear in a scene where Streber, who replaced one of them, is also in the background.
    • The Newgrounds ending of "Hollow Sorrows" reveals that the two thieves are working under The Candy Dealer, who in the same breath is revealed to be part of the cult; this is in reference to a scrapped concept from "The Stars" where the thieves worked under Roy's uncle, who was also a member of the cult.
  • Fake American: The generically American Lila is voiced by the British voice actress Elsie Lovelock. It's especially noticeable in her first scene in "The Stars", where you can hear her accent slip in.
  • Flip-Flop of God: While a doodle dump from Sr. Pelo implied that Streber survived Bob's attack, a now-deleted tweet from Streber's original voice actor, Gabe Velez, suggests that he did indeed die. Pelo then went on to say that Streber did die on a Q&A, but his mocking nature and the knowledge of him being a Trolling Creator before has left some fans to be doubtful. Ultimately, a background appearance in Hollow Sorrows confirms he survived after all.
  • In Memoriam: At the end of "Deadly Smiles", a memorial for Ernestina Garcia Nunez, Sr. Pelo's grandmother, appears.
  • The Merch:
    • Shortly before the release of "The Stars", plushies of Skid and Pump were put up for preorder, with an accompanying video of the Ooga Booga peddling them to the viewer.
    • A few months before the release of "Deadly Smiles", two shirts and a second edition of the Skid and Pump plushies were put up for preorder. Like the original plushies, these had videos announcing them, with Frank advertising the t-shirts and Skid and Pump watching an ad for the plushies.
    • Late April 2023 saw the biggest drop of show merch yet, including multiple t-shirts, two sticker sheets, a poster for "Tender Treats", and even a Bob plushie. Like the previous sets of merch, this too had a video for it, where Sr. Pelo tries to get Rick to act in an ad for them.
    • May 2023 saw a physical cassette, vinyl, and CD release of the Volume 1 soundtrack on Turtle Pal Tapes, this time with two ads: one by the composer for the series, MasterSwordRemix, and one done by Sr. Pelo.
  • Official Fan-Submitted Content: Starting with "The Stars", many background characters are fan characters sent in during the production of the episode to make a cameo appearance.
  • The Original Darrin: Sr. Pelo voiced Lila in "It's spooky month" before handing the role off to Elsie Lovelock. In "Tender Treats", he once again voices Lila in a flashback set during "It's spooky month", with Lila noting how different her voice sounded back then.
  • The Other Darrin:
    • In "It's spooky month", Lila was voiced by Sr. Pelo himself, mainly because "It's spooky month" was just another regular short at the time and thus Pelo did not see the need to hire outside voicework. Since "The Stars", however, Lila's voice has been provided by Elsie Lovelock.
    • Due to his brief appearance, Pump's grandfather was voiced by Sr. Pelo in "The Stars". Starting with "Deadly Smiles", he is instead voiced by P.M. Seymour.
    • When the male actor from the movie in "It's spooky month" reappears in "Deadly Smiles", he is voiced by Zach Fuller rather than Sr. Pelo.
    • Robert had three different voice actors. "Unwanted Guest" and "Deadly Smiles" saw Robert voiced by JpegNetworks. Following a controversy regarding them after the release of "Deadly Smiles", they were taken off the show and the role was recast to Gabe Velez. The role (along with Velez's other character, Streber) then went to Corey Wilder after Velez was accused of rape in 2023.
    • As yet another character originally voiced by Sr. Pelo, Bob Velseb's full appearance in "Tender Treats" instead sees him voiced by Corey LeVier.
    • In "Unwanted Guest", Patty was voiced by Abigail Adair. Starting with "Tender Treats", she is instead voiced by Monica Franco.
    • Liv is voiced by Marcy Martinez in "Streber's Rehearsal", rather than the voice actor for her home shorts, Anna Chloe Moorey.
    • When Moloch makes his grand return in "Hollow Sorrows", he is voiced by Alexander Katnik instead of Sr. Pelo. Unlike other Pelo recasts, which were done for vocal variety, this one was done as Pelo could no longer do Moloch's voice without hurting his throat.
  • Parody Assistance: The Hobomen, parodies of Captain and Steve from Tankmen, are voiced by JohnnyUtah, the creator of Tankmen and voice actor for the actual Captain and Steve.
  • Reality Subtext: "Unwanted Guest" has a running joke about Skid and Pump celebrating Spooky Month despite it being the middle of June, referencing how production of "Unwanted Guest" began in June.
  • Role-Ending Misdemeanor:
    • JpegNetworks, Robert's original voice actor, was fired from the show after siding with their at the time partner when they were accused of grooming and harassment, which similar accusations being lobbied towards Jpeg as well. They were replaced by Gabe Velez for "Tender Treats".
    • Ironic given who he was hired to replace, Gabe Velez would be fired from his roles as Robert and Streber after allegations of rape and manipulation from an ex-partner were made against him in August 2023, as Pelo confirmed in a stream shortly after the allegations were made public. Even JpegNetworks, Robert's original voice actor, commented on the irony of it. Ethan's voice actor Corey Wilder was later casted as his replacement.
  • Schedule Slip: The Halloween-themed Spooky Month videos are usually released sometime in November, with the fourth in particular being released on Christmas Eve of 2021. The sixth installment, "Hollow Sorrows", saw the longest delay of the show to date, due to multiple complications during the episode's development. It completely missed 2023 entirely, instead releasing in early 2024.
  • Shrug of God: A minor Running Gag during a Spooky Month Q&A Pelo hosted involved him simply replying "idk, time will tell" whenever someone asked a spoiler-related question.
  • Significant Double Casting:
    • Elsie Lovelock voices both Lila and Carmen: the two are both mothers, Lila being kind and caring while Carmen is rude and entitled, Lila is friends with Jaune while Jaune hates Carmen.
    • Lizzie Freeman voices Dexter's mother Michelle; Lizzie also voices the TV version of the very doll Dexter got trapped in, adding yet another layer of irony to the Erotophs' whole situation.
  • Staff-Created Fan Work:
  • Trolling Creator: Pelo responded to one of his girlfriend's posts by saying that Kevin would die in the fifth episode. With the content of the post, Pelo was intending the phrase in the joking role of Crazy Jealous Guy, but he absolutely played along when fans took it seriously. By the time "Tender Treats" came out, it was clear he was joking when it turns out Kevin survived after all.
  • Uncredited Role:
    • Oddly, Sr. Pelo doesn't credit himself for his voice work in "The Stars", despite voicing more than half the characters that appear in that episode. Starting with "Unwanted Guest", he's properly credited.
    • Confi's voice actor is left out of the credits of "Streber's Rehearsal", while the rest of the cast are listed.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The Eyes of the Universe's original design had two separate faces on the sides of his head, compared to the final which has one face, but teeth that go all the way around his head.
    • One of the first ideas for "The Stars" was that the Thieves were working under Roy's uncle. Pelo ultimately gave them no connections to each other, commenting that he's glad he did so.
    • Unnamed in "The Stars" itself, the character sheets posted after the short's release referred to Robert as "Tom". At some point between the development of "The Stars" and "Unwanted Guest", his name was changed to Robert, as "Roy, Ross, and Robert" rolls off the tongue better than "Roy, Ross, and Tom".
    • The original story for "Unwanted Guest" involved a witch character based off The Blair Witch Project, but Pelo didn't like where the plot was going and scrapped it, instead deciding to focus the episode on Moloch.
    • "Deadly Smiles" has a few scrapped scenes, including one where Lila calls Skid, another scene with Radford in-between Skid and Pump realizing the Happy Fella is gone and them meeting the Hobomen, and an alternate version of the Hatzgang finding the doll. Sr. Pelo also mentions the episode didn't originally take place in Winter, and that he changed it specifically for the joke of Roy asking for Skid and Pump's jackets.
    • "Deadly Smiles" was originally supposed to end with Skid and Pump watching the Happy Fella show on TV, with the Newgrounds ending having John and Jack watching the news and seeing the report of Bob Velseb escaping from jail. These were combined into the pre-credits ending to better lead into the next episode, and because Pelo wanted the Newgrounds ending to be more serious compared to the endings for "The Stars" and "Unwanted Guest".
    • The initial concept for Jaune watching TV in "Tender Treats" had an ad for Dexter's extermination business, which in the final is instead a missing person's report for him, as at this point in the show Dexter has been "missing" for over a year and thus wouldn't be running ads.
    • Patty was supposed to be part of the credits panoramic for "Tender Treats", but was left out due to space. She was going to be a pie.
    • Spooky Month was originally supposed to have twelve episodes, but after a friend pointed out the show's main climax was in episode ten and the following two episodes didn't have much relation as a result, Sr. Pelo shortened the count to ten.
  • Word of Gay:
    • While not elaborating further, Sr. Pelo stated Kevin would "go out with anyone" if his job didn't make him so stressed, implying he's pansexual.
    • A storyboard artist for the scene in Mayor Evermore's office in "Tender Treats" stated that the sunglasses cop pulling down his shades was him trying to flirt with John, Jack, and Patty.
  • Word of God:
    • In response to seeing some genderbent fanart, Sr. Pelo stated that if Lila was a man, he'd be named Morado.
    • According to Sr. Pelo, Bob Velseb is not a relative of anyone seen in the show up to "Tender Treats", with him simply cooking hamburgers for the families of Lila, Jaune, and Pump's father, but he was originally friends with Mr. Wonder, Pump's grandfather.
    • After a fan asked if Kevin and Ross were brothers, Sr. Pelo confirmed that no, they aren't. When another fan asked if Kevin was related to anyone currently in the show at all, Pelo stated he wasn't, but revealed there was an existing character related to another member of the Hatzgang — that being John, who is Robert's uncle.
    • As he was unnamed in the episode, Pelo was asked what the name of the man accompanying Evermore during "Hollow Sorrows" was, to which he said it was Garcia.
  • Word of Saint Paul:
    • After expressing approval at fans interpreting Dexter as trans, Metamaniac, Dexter's voice actor, tweeted that they personally saw him as nonbinary.
    • Smuggers (the Sad Guy's voice actor) has stated on his Twitter as far as he's concerned, Sad Guy is canonically 40.
    • On Discord, Streber's voice actor Gabe Velez gave a few of their headcanons about Streber, such as him being bisexual and polyamourous, and that he wants to be on Broadway.
