"What's the point if they're not here?"
Susie on her absent parents, "Hollow Sorrows"

While the series is usually shown to be very funny, there are some scenes that made us spooky sad.

  • Lila's Butt-Monkey status can sometimes come off as this, given the fact that she's just a normal woman trying to raise her son, and is constantly fearing for her and her son's safety when dealing with the Villain of the Week.
    • The second plush advertisement offers insight into how Lila would react if Skid were ever badly injured or outright killed, and seeing her immediately break down in tears over the sight of her son being reduced to an empty husk is just heartbreaking.
  • Skid's father's absence is very marked, and he shows that he misses him: in "Hollow Sorrows" he even asks Lila if she is throwing away his stuff, with her immediately reassuring him that she isn't. Furthermore, when Father Gregor asks about his dad, Skid immediately makes a sad face, with the priest apologizing as he realizes he's hit a sore spot.
    • In a Pelo fanart on Father's Day can be see a dejected Skid at the cemetery with Lila, placing flowers on his dad's headstone.
  • The story of Pump and Susie's parents, as outlined by photos in their house, is extremely saddening. For a long while, Pump and Susie's parents spent all the time in the world with them, including going out with them on Halloween under large family themes, like youkai. However, when the stress of their job started to catch up with them, the time they could spend with their kids started becoming less and less, with Susie in one image looking extremely worried, until they eventually couldn't be with their kids anymore and had to move out of town to an apartment complex to get their work done, leaving them under their grandfather's watch. It's especially heart-wrenching when Pump mentions in "Deadly Smiles" that their parents don't even answer their calls anymore, despite them clearly loving their kids.
    • "Hollow Sorrows" shows how Pump hopes that his parents will phone him to talk to him, so much so that he calls them by name as soon as he picks up the phone, only to be disappointed when he finds out that it is Lila who is talking to him. Through it all, Mr. Wonder is looking sadly at his grandson, realizing how bad the situation makes him feel.
  • The Stinger in "Deadly Smiles", when watched on Newgrounds, has a cultist burn John's house down while he and Jack go out to get donuts. This effectively means not only did they render John homeless just to get rid of any evidence he had, but it's implied that his daughter was killed in the fire.
  • Streber's fate in "Tender Treats". He was just a simple guy in a vampire costume who set out to entertain people on Halloween, only to end up brutally mangled and left to die by Bob. Thankfully, it is revealed that he had survived the ordeal.
  • Despite Dexter being a cat-killing weirdo and his gleeful murderous tendencies as a killer doll, his elderly mother is worried sick, saying that all she has left is hope that he will be found one day, along with a necklace pedant and a video recording of her son. The fact that she is oblivious to her son's tendencies is tragic alone, but she is later killed by a Moloch-possessed Patty offscreen.
  • The ending of "Hollow Sorrows", where Skid and Pump are saddened by Moloch's banishment, Lila being shaken to the core by Father Gregor's "The Reason You Suck" Speech which ends with her and Skid crying into each other's arms, Pump thinking he got a gift from his parents when it's actually from his grandpa, and Gregor being sacrificed to the Eyes of the Universe.
    • Susie's reaction when she notices the receipt coming out of Mr. Wonder's pocket and realizes that he was the one who bought the gift for Pump is quite depressing, so much so that she wonders how her brother can have so much fun if their parents aren't even there.
    • Of note is Skid's "The Reason I Suck" Speech to Lila. Compared to his normal, high-pitched voice, Skid's voice sounds much deeper than normal, and his inflections come across as incredibly sincere. It's a testament to how much he's matured from his time being tutored by Father Gregor, but it also shows that he genuinely thinks he's a burden to his mom.
    • Not that Father Gregor fares any better: as he returns wounded to his church, we can see that he has a bitter and saddened expression on his face, knowing that he probably regrets having shouted at Lila like that (especially in front of her son) and having hurt Skid and Pump exorcising Moloch: in both cases he did the right thing, but at a certain cost, as he earned the disdain of both children.
  • In addition, in the same episode, is the speech that John gives to Skid and Pump, saying that their parents love them, no matter what, all while looking at a photo of him with his daughter (whom we suspect that something bad has happened to her) and consequently adding a depressing tone to his words.
