- The Uzumaki and Itozumaki enemies (giant mutant snails) are named after the manga Uzumaki and its creator Junji Ito, respectively. That's because Ito lists H. P. Lovecraft as one of his primary influences. The description of the latter enemy also states that it was once a beautiful woman, and in Uzumaki being turned into a snail was the fate of several characters.

- According to their description, the Salamander enemies are proficient at shmups.
- On the Ultharian spaceship, there are pixelated alien invaders who become faster when their allies get defeated.

- Right before the final dungeon, the fake ending shows Cthulhu ready to destroy the world in a parody of the game over screen from Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. "Game Over. Return of Cthulhu."
- There's an enemy called a "Fire Faerie" whose description reads: "Burns you if you don't listen".
- In the Cthulhu's Angels campaign (in itself a shout out), the dark god says in the beginning: "My Cthulhu sense is tingling!". Also, he gives October money with the words "It's dangerous to go alone! Take this!".
- When confronting Dacre in Cthulhu's Angels, he will say "I sense something I haven't sensed in a long time."
- The blurb for Kraken says it refuses to be released.
- The blurb for the Fire Whale says "Call him Ishmael".
- The Marsh Foundry is practically an expy of the Magitek Factory from Final Fantasy VI. A guide lantern in that same dungeon can be examined and gives developer notes alluding to this.
- The cutscene before the fight with Ember references the opening cutscene of Dragon Quest III, also featuring the dragon fought at the summit of the volcano.
- After defeating Dark Umi, Umi (temporarily) gets free of her evil self and attempts to throw Sharpe away, but it flies back into her hand. Elona then explains that it's a cursed weapon and it cannot be unequipped unless the scroll of curse removal will be used.
