Running Gag / Game Grumps

Go To

Running gags from Game Grumps.

  • After making jokes that aren't politically correct or are incredibly bizarre, Jon will typically interrupt saying "Game Grumps!".
    • Similarly, "Like, comment and subscribe!" when they get off on a tangent.
    • Or "[X] Grumps!", where X will relate to the topic of the tangent (for example, "Exchange Rate Grumps!").
  • Arin will typically yell 'Good Night, everybody!' after those same jokes, perhaps referencing Animaniacs.
  • After naming Link in A Link To The Past Groomp, they often refer to the show as Game Groomps.
    • Directly spawned from the above, any Zelda playthrough will give Link a ridiculous name. Buttlet, Loafus Cramwell, Qoxonmafasenote , the list goes on.
  • Waterflame's pause balls remix gets mentioned enough for it to be a running gag at this point.
  • Jon brings up the fact that Arin has three Wonderswans from time to time.
    • He goes on a bit of a rant once he looks more closely and realizes Arin actually has five of the damn things. Apparently he's not particularly attached to them, since he casually offers to let Jon just take a couple of him (for the record, Jon declines)
  • Sometimes when they mention a product by name, they will joke about receiving cease and desist orders.
  • Arin's many and varied insults for Jon, most notably calling him a "clod" and a "pizza shit".
  • Jon will consistently misname the Pokemon Whismur whenever one is encountered, calling it "Pumbloom," "Gamsmash," "Gumpflepuff," and "Pumbluss" in four distinct battles.
  • Arin will often use his robot voice and mention cheese pizza.
  • "Listen to the X on this shit!" seems to be becoming one whenever they discover a silly menu sound.
  • Eye joke. I don't have that many, I can't see that many, but I can see EVERYTHING!
  • Most of the earlier episodes of their Sonic '06 playthrough had at least one of them singing some variation of "City Escape".
  • Arin saying complete nonsense instead of the show's name in the intro/outro. Apparently the show is named "Juju's", "Flim Flam", "Bram Bloo", "Bloom Blam", "Black Bomb", "Gam Gramps", "Burgers" and "Squidward"
    • In two episodes in a row of Super Castlevania IV, Arin does this and gets Barry to put up a title card of the show with its name replaced by whatever he said, and his and Danny's normal Grump faces replaced with either a caveman-esque design or an exaggerated anime style.
  • They have a strange affinity for playing Mary-Kate and Ashley games. They've played three.
  • Arin saying during the "Next time on Game Grumps..." outro that there is no next time.
  • Quoting "GOTTA GO FYEEEST!" (particularly during a loading screen)
  • "Xing around at the speed of Y!"
  • Jon coming discovering a game in Arin's supply or having one come to his mind and he always goes "OOOOH MYYYYY GOOOD. WE GOTTA PLAY THIS."
  • Lately, Barry seems to have taken a liking to ending episodes by slowly zooming in on some part of the screen.
  • Mispronouncing the name "Rouge the Bat" in every way possible.
  • Jon referencing the Continue? "epic moment" Ghost Love Score joke.
    • Arin mocking/criticizing Jon's use of the gag, and Barry overediting the segments with splitscreening and slow pans.
  • "Mycaruba!"note
  • Danny will very often mention Skittles, but mostly wants a MONKEY BUTLER.
  • Danny has a tendency to yell "YOU DID IT!" or "nailed it!" after a humiliating death.
  • Mentioning Wolf Job, it started off putting the real picture of the Wolf Job on the screen (mostly at the request of Danny) and then changing it to wolves in other careers (as a pun off of wolf job).
  • Danny requesting edits from Barry, and Arin countermanding whatever he asked for.
    • One that Danny has asked for a few times is the "smiling burger floating from right to left."
    • ("Barry cut this out/keep this in.")
  • GODDAMMIT ROSS
  • Whenever confused old people are mentioned, the go-to non sequitur for them to say is usually "RAISINS!?"
  • Danny's "We're playing the Feud!" whenever he and Arin start a series based on a game show.
  • Arin makes frequent references to measuring devices (e.g. "rage-o-meter", ghost-o-meter"), after which Danny will invariably say "it's actually pronounced ghost-ah-meter, but that's fine."
  • Infrequent, but fairly consistent references have been made to the fact that the show is basically improv comedy and has to follow certain rules. For example, when Arin undermines or ignores a suggestion made by Danny, he'll break the awkward pause by saying "yes, and."
  • Danny responding "I'm not sure I like the way you said 'black'" in a condescending tone whenever that word comes up in game dialogue (context be damned).
Arin, as Navel/"Little Guy," as voiced by Bill Cosby: Look, y'see...it's OK for me to say it!
  • "If you X in the game, you X for real!"
  • "I WON! The money is MINE!"
  • Awwwhh, shit dude!
  • Ninja Brian aggressively reminding the other Grumps that he has a Ph.D. in theoretical physics, and also spouting out off other basic science and mathematics facts as filler to troll them.
  • Reading the text of Bloodborne's loading screens as if they were in a restaurant.
Dan: 'How's your chicken?' 'Oh, well, recognizable by its withered feathers...'
Dan: 'How's your steak?' 'Oh, terribly worn and unsanitary.'
  • Throughout their Dead Rising playthrough they can’t stop making fun of the song that plays when the convicts show up (for the record, it’s “Gone Guru” by Lifeseeker).
  • Various weird and funny phrases are either noted down as possible future Ninja Sex Party songs or are compared to songs they had tried to write in the past. There's enough of these to fill a twenty-minute compilation video.
  • Originating in episode 5 of their playthrough of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Arin and Danny will mention the crab from Zelda's dream that would say "Fuck your father!" They even go as far as naming their Crabrawler "FukUrFather", in their playthrough of Pokemon Sun.
  • Arin moaning out "My pussy!", which Dan hates.
  • Reading any instance of ellipses as "Fred," originating from their Doki Doki Literature Club! playthrough where they thought ellipses looked like a monster face named Fred.
  • Danny saying "Yaaaas queen (slaaaaay)!"
  • Ever since Arin shouted "I'M the video game boy! I'M THE ONE WHO WINS!" in Stick Fight, it's becoming a recurring gag to repeat the phrase or rework it to fit other scenarios "i.e. "I'm the squirrel boy! I'm the one who nuts!"
  • "I wanna speak to a very hotttt..."
  • From the House Party (2017) series:
  • Quoting Orson Welles' drunk wine commercial takes ("Aaahhh, the French...") or using it as a snowclone.
  • Quoting "You gotta eat the lettuce."
  • During their Heave Ho playthrough, they keep telling each other, "Grab my hand" in an English accent.
  • Arin setting an AI opponent to the hardest difficulty, despite Dan's objections, and regretting it pretty much immediately.
  • Dan saying Arin's name like a disappointed mother. This happens enough that someone put together a compilation video that's almost half an hour long.
  • From the Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc playthrough:
    • As a result of the overuse of the word "Ultimate" as a descriptor in the prologue, calling mundane objects "the Ultimate [X]."
    • Sayaka being portrayed as a Large Ham stereotypical Italian.
    • Mondo randomly saying, "Piece of shit!" In the middle of his dialogue.
    • Similarly, Sakura's dramatic "So in the end..." voice clip was often quoted.
    • In Danganronpa 2, Mahiru being referred to as the Wendy's mascot, as well as using the Catchphrase "What the heck is going on around here?" (the latter being carried over from their playthrough of Pantsu Hunter, as they seem to associate that line with any anime girl standing with their hands on their hips)
  • Every time they play a Pokemon game, they name the protagonist something that affects the way the name appears in dialogue, like "Fuck, I" or "I never," so it shows up as phrases like "Fuck, I used a Poké Ball!" They tried this in Pokémon Sun, with "Dang, dude, I," but with Sun/Moon changing the messages to be "You used a Poké Ball" and the like, it backfired.
  • Whenever the Grumps talk about a single topic at length for most of the episode, they either make the joke or note the persistent comment the lovelies tend to post on said long-winded topics:
Person A: "What's your favorite Game Grumps episode, Billy?"
Billy: "I like the one where they talk about [X] for a loooooooong time."
  • Due to YouTube reportedly demonetizing videos that mention the word "Coronavirus", the Grumps instead began referring to the COVID-19 pandemic as "the Backstreet Boys reunion tour."
  • During Legend of Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom, the Grumps never say Tulin's name correctly. Some examples include Tustin, Tulips, Tungsten, and Turin. Also each time his ability is used, the editor will insert the "Woooow!" sound clip.
