"Goodbye, Krabby Patty?" contains examples of:

  • Adam Westing: Jon Hamm basically plays Don Draper as a fish.
  • Ass Shove: Squidward gets this with a power drill after being mistaken for the Squidward robot.
  • Bait-and-Switch: After Don describes who they need to be the face of the frozen krabby patty, Mr. Krabs puts his arm around an excited SpongeBob while saying he knows the perfect guy for the job. It then cuts to Patrick filming a commercial for the frozen krabby patty.
  • Chekhov's Gun: When seeing how the frozen patties are created, SpongeBob sees the filler section, which shows sand being added. Later on, it's revealed sand is the special filler to make the patties, resulting in them tasting horrible.
  • Continuity Nod: This isn’t the first time that Squidward has failed at looking for a cooler job because of his resume.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: The slogan for the Frozen Krabby Pattys is "They taste so nice, that they taste nice!"
  • Dumbass Has a Point: SpongeBob makes a rather valid example of this when he sees sand being used at the filler station, as it turns out later that sand is the secret frozen patty ingredient.
  • Faint in Shock: Mr. Krabs does it when Patrick reveals the frozen patties are made with sand to the whole gala crowd.
  • Foreshadowing: When being given a tour of the frozen patty factory, SpongeBob is suspicious when the filler station is adding sand. Turns out, sand is being used to make the frozen patties.
  • Funny Background Event:
    • During the factory tour, a worker can be seen falling into the machine where he's trapped on the conveyer belt, cooked, and frozen. Another worker then changes a sign to read "0 without an accident".
    • While Mr. Krabs is filming his own commercial for frozen krabby patties, SpongeBob can be seen standing behind him from inside the Krusty Krab.
  • I Ate WHAT?!: Everybody has this reaction when it's publicly revealed that the frozen krabby patties are made with sand.
  • Joke of the Butt: Frozen Krabby Patties cause the consumer to have their butt enlarged.
  • Large Ham: When Squidward gets fired, he overreacts by giving Mr. Krabs a resignation letter in a theatrical matter.
  • Lazy Bum: Squidward finds out he can’t achieve his dreams because all he has on his resume is being a cashier, but rather than get a better job, he goes back to his old one.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Squidward mentions that he's been working at the Krusty Krab for 17 years, a reference to how long the show had been running at the time this episode was in production.
  • Letting the Air out of the Band: It happens first when SpongeBob attempts to give his first tour of the Krusty Krab Museum, and again later when Patrick eats the Frozen Patty on camera when filming a commercial and the patty makes him swell up.
  • Lonely at the Top: Patrick.
  • Luminescent Blush: Happens to SpongeBob when he notices the ice-cream he's holding is melting, and the party guests laugh at him for it.
  • Pooled Funds: Mr. Krabs does this at one point in a large vault of gold coins.
  • Rewatch Bonus: The scene where SpongeBob sees sand being added to the frozen patties' filler station becomes extremely important in later viewings upon learning the frozen patties use sand as its secret ingredient.
  • Running Gag: SpongeBob being called a yellow box.
    • Mr. Krabs Fainting in Don Grouper's arms.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After Patrick reveals to the public that frozen krabby patties are made of sand, Mr. Krabs faints in Don's arms, who then drops him and walks away, saying, "It was cute when you were rich. I'm outta here."
  • Secret Ingredient: The special filler used to make the frozen patties; it is revealed to be sand, which SpongeBob discovers right when he eats one himself, which was also the cause of the customers' weird side-effects.
  • Shout-Out: Mr. Krabs swimming in a vault of coins is a homage to Scrooge McDuck from DuckTales.
    • One of the paintings in Patrick's new home is a parody of The Scream. Another one is a parody of "The Creation of Adam".
    • Squidward says he's going to publish his novel, Dial D For Doily, a reference to Dial M for Murder.
    • Hogan Düp ice-cream is a parody of Häagen-Dazs ice-cream.
  • Special Guest: Jon Hamm as Don Grouper.
  • Take Our Word for It: SpongeBob keeps the formula for the real krabby patty inside his body, but when he reads it, the back of the sheet is facing the camera so we never get to see it.
  • Waterfall Puke: SpongeBob vomits sand in this manner due to the filler in the frozen krabby patty being sand.
  • Zillion-Dollar Bill: Mr. Krabs receives what seems to be a 100 million dollars check, only to find out there's plenty more zeroes written all the way to its back, making the amount 100 nonillionnote dollars.
