Recap / Iron Fist (2017) S2E9 "War Without End"

Go To

Danny struggles with the consequences of a difficult decision. Colleen's quest for the truth about her family comes to an unexpected climax. In an attempt to suppress the growing resistance against him, Davos uses his growing army to launch a surprise attack.

  • Arms Dealer: Ward and Walker visit Turk Barrett to get some firepower for taking down Davos. An M4 for Walker, and a handgun for Ward.
  • Badass Teacher: Turns out Davos really is an amazing and inspiring teacher. What's left of Rhyno's crew aren't just fanatically loyal to him, they've also been turned into fairly badass kung fu guys.
  • Big Brother Instinct: A gun-toting Ward turns up to rescue his sister and wants to kill Davos personally when he sees what's happened to her.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Ward arrives at Davos's place and shoots Chen Wu just as he was about to overwhelm Misty.
  • Big "NO!": Colleen, after BB is stabbed.
  • Brought Down to Badass: Even though Danny has no powers, he's still able to fight and eventually subdue the Shou-Lao powered Davos.
  • Call-Back: When Walker derides the idea that Ward has used a gun outside of a firing range, Ward tells her how he killed his father in the Season One finale. Which is technically necrocide rather than patricide as he points out.
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You: Chen Wu tells Joy that he won't kill her because Davos still has plans for her to get to Danny.
  • Character Overlap: Turk Barrett carries on the Running Gag of him appearing in every Netflix Marvel series. He gets off better than usual except for being a lousy golfer.
  • Choke Holds: After drugging Davos, Danny puts him into a choke hold to have him under control until the drug works.
  • Combat Pragmatist:
    • Rather than take on Davos in hand-to-hand combat again, Walker buys an M4 assault rifle.
    • Danny uses a syringe like last time to take Davos out and prevent him from using the Iron Fist.
  • Conservation of Ninjutsu: Justified here. Colleen (the lone ninja) takes on Rhyno's crew. But she's a highly trained martial artist with a lifetime of experience, and they've only been training with Davos for a few weeks.
  • Dies Wide Open: BB, after he succumbs to his stab wounds.
  • Did Not Think This Through: Hiding Mrs. Yang at the Community Centre only means that Davos goes looking for her there, on hearing she's rallied the rival gangs to take him down.
  • Does Not Like Guns: Chen contemptuously throws away Misty's gun on disarming her, only to get shot by Ward which ends the fight at once.
  • Good Colors, Evil Colors: Danny's Fist glowed gold. Davos glowed red. Colleen glows white.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: Twice. First when we don't see Davos use the Fist to pop Lau's head in the Community Center's kitchen, and near the end of the episode when we don't see Danny carve a section of skin off his chest to fuel Colleen's empowered tattoo.
  • Guilt by Association: Davos uses this as justification for killing everyone else in the Community Center in addition to the Triad members there...in spite of the fact that the Triads just happened to be at the center, and the the people there aren't associated with them any more than that.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: A villainous one as Lau deliberately fights Davos to stall him while Sherry Yang and the rest of the Triads flee via another exit.
  • Mercy Kill: Walker decides Chen is too injured, so ends his suffering.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: After they kill BB, Colleen beats the crap out of Davos' disciples in revenge. But Vengeance Feels Empty, and she resolves to teach them to be better people.
  • No Kill like Overkill: Davos throws a hatchet into Lau's chest. Not content to let him bleed out, Davos walks over to him and crushes his head with the Iron Fist.
  • Hope Spot:
    • Crank acts like BB has persuaded him to abandon Davos, only to stab him fatally.
    • Colleen is in the process of transferring the power of the Iron Fist from Davos when he wakes up.
  • Obfuscating Disability: Danny plays up his limp when he confronts Davos. This lets him get close enough to start landing blows before Davos can bring out the Fist.
  • Office Golf: Spoofed; Turk is playing golf next to his van full of guns. Ward gives him some advice on his form.
  • One-Woman Army: Colleen takes on all of Davos's disciples at once by herself and wins.
  • Railing Kill: Attempted; Davos shoves Joy over the railing onto the lower floor, though she survives with just a broken arm.
  • Sanity Slippage: Davos is more than willing to murder innocents who are even remotely associated with the triads... meaning everyone in the community centre.
  • Screw the Money, I Have Rules!: When Joy offers Chen money to let her escape, he notes there was a point that offer would have worked, but now he believes in Davos' cause.
  • Suddenly Shouting: Davos, when he confronts Danny at the community center.
    Davos: Move!... MOVE!
  • Shout-Out:
    • Walker has "WALKING WOUNDED" engraved on her lighter.
      • This probably isn't a shout out to Everything but the Girl. The phrase "walking wounded" is much older than an 80s pop duo. In medical terms, it refers to those who are capable of walking away from an accident/attack and to whatever location has been made available for treatment. It also refers to soldiers who return from war without physical scars, but with serious psychological trauma. Such as a woman who was imprisoned and raped for years.
    • When Joy asks Ward where he got a gun, he replies, "A van down by the river".
  • Smash to Black: Walker buttstroking Misty in the face.
  • Taught by Experience: Danny has finally learned how to take on someone empowered with the Fist. It's only powerful if the punch lands. He dodges a few times, and he grabs Davos's arm to stop the punch.
  • Technicolor Fire: The concoction prepared by the Crane Sisters burns with a green flame.
  • Trashcan Bonfire: Using an actual trashcan, Walker sets fire to the confidential record on what happened in Sokovia after she's finished reading it.
  • Why Don't You Just Shoot Him?: Averted with Walker, Ward, and Misty. Walker and Ward buy guns planning to kill Davos from a distance. Misty tries to shoot Chen when he walks up behind her, but he was close enough to prevent it. Then Ward walks in during the subsequent fight and shoots him in the neck. Walker decides he's not going to make it and puts two more rounds in his chest.
  • You Shall Not Pass!: Lau holds off Davos to give the Triad members a chance to flee.
