Recap / Harley Quinn 2019 S 4 E 6 Metamorphosis

Go To

Following the death of Nightwing, Harley and Barbara do what they can to find his killer. Babs is determined that Ivy is responsible, but Harley has faith that her girlfriend is innocent.

Meanwhile, Ivy realizes that she had been letting her PR Team manipulate her and asks for the help of the Natural Disasters in getting rid of them.

Tropes:

  • And There Was Much Rejoicing: The Bat Family may be mourning Nightwing's death, but it's party central at the Legion of Doom, who just lost one of their hated foes.
  • Break the Cutie: Saying that Batgirl does not take Nightwing's death well is honestly an understatement.
  • Brick Joke: At the beginning of the episode, the Jons note that the Ivy doll they had commissioned is being reissued because of the "realistic butthole". As part of her gambit, Ivy passes out gift bags with the dolls, with a child drawing attention to the feature.
  • Cliffhanger: After Babs storms out in tears upon Joker admitting to killing Nightwing, Harley notices another Harley in the crowd dressed identically to her, who winks at her before walking off, leaving her completely confused.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Ivy is naturally surprised that the duplicating Jons can combine into a giant.
  • Drunken Master: Barbara gets hammered and goes to town on the Legion of Doom, at one point vomiting on Killer Croc while kicking his ass. She continues to grab any nearby drinks she can get her hands on as she does so.
  • Evil Is One Big, Happy Family: After the Joker announces his return to full-time villainy, his new family decides to join him.
  • Evil Is Petty:
    • Toyman blows up the food truck outside of Nightwing's funeral because he hates noodles and wants attention.
    • When Joker's family learns that he's going back to full-time evil, Bethany brings up a cashier who never told her to have a nice day as her own declaration of joining her husband, seemingly intending to assault or kill them in return for it.
  • Faceā€“Heel Turn: The entire family that Joker made ends up deciding to join him in his decision to return to evil, even asking him to perform certain deeds against people they hate.
  • Flipping the Table: Batgirl flips Lucius Fox's work table in a rage while ranting about Ivy possibly being responsible for Nightwing's death.
  • The "Fun" in "Funeral": Nightwing's funeral is a mostly serious affair, but for some reason (that probably starts with "Harley") his casket includes a likeness of his fabulous posterior.
  • Fusion Dance: The Jons combine into a single, giant Jon to battle Ivy and the Natural Disasters.
  • History Repeats: As proof that his return to fully evil villainy is genuine, Joker reveals that he repeated one of his greatest "classics" (as he put it) — killing one of the Bat Family. Years back it was Jason Todd, now it's Nightwing.
  • I Want My Mommy!: Robin is so fearful that Nightwing's killer will come after him and the rest of the Family that he calls and wants to stay with Talia, and is happy when her two ninjas arrive and abduct him.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • Nora boasts that she made sure the Legion of Doom has no childcare program.
    • As part of her deliberate attempt to ruin her reputation and get rid of the Jons, Ivy insults all the participants of the Little Ivy pageant, telling them that not only will they never be her specifically, as she is the product of a freak accident, but doubts any of them will amount to anything. That said, seeing them cheer as her crew explodes the giant Jon convinces her that perhaps they do have a future as little villains.
  • Kill It Through Its Stomach: Tefé compels King Shark's children to leap into the giant Jon's mouth and devour his innards, causing him to burst.
  • The Kindnapper: Talia has her ninjas pick up her son for his safety. That is to say, she has them break into Lucius Fox's lab, hogtie him, and shove him in a sack. Once the misunderstanding is resolved, he goes along with it.
  • Major Injury Underreaction: A man tries to make a wish in the Legion of Doom fountain. One of King Shark's children leaps from the fountain, eating the coin and his hand. His complaint? The baby shark stole his wish.
  • Mic Drop: Ivy punctuates ruining her reputation by dropping the mic in front of the Jons.
  • Minor Injury Overreaction:
    • Toyman is furious that Barbara shoved his face into a cake. He's in a weight-loss contest with Dr. Trap and can only have sugar on Saturdays!
    • Harley shoves Dr. Trap's face into a salad and holds him down in it. After a moment he passes out as if he suffocated by getting smothered. He does thank her for being considerate enough to respect his diet.
  • Mundane Utility: Talia has fashioned a Lazarus Pit into a hot spring spa. She does warn her fellow villains not to linger too long because the substance causes insanity.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • The Little Ivies are all styled in the various designs of Ivy from the comics, Halloween costumes, and different media appearances, such as one in Uma Thurman's style from Batman & Robin, and another based on the DC Super Hero Girls version of the character.
    • Two-Face's girls Sugar and Spice from Batman Forever appear hanging with Two-Face here.
    • When Tefé summons the baby sharks, the sound effect is the one used for Aquaman summoning fish in the old 1960s Filmation cartoons and the Superfriends series.
    • While announcing his return to villainy to his family, Joker threatens to blow up any hospital that sends them a medical bill.
  • Not Me This Time: Ivy insists to Harley that she wasn't personally responsible for Nightwing's death. However, she adds that she can't guarantee any other Legion members weren't responsible, and she would approve of them doing so because Nightwing is a rival, and taking him out would be a plus.
  • Percussive Maintenance: Batgirl Flipping the Table and dropping Nightwing's tracking device to the floor causes it to activate.
Harley: The power of senseless violence!
  • Press Hat: Volcana wears one while posing as a reporter for Lex News.
  • Self-Duplication: The Jons have the power to duplicate through mitosis, fully clothed and connected by an umbilical cord.
  • Shout-Out: One of Nightwing's fans at his funeral resembles Trudy from Scooby-Doo: Camp Scare; probably a reference because Trudy was voiced by Tara Strong, who has also voiced Batgirl, Harley, and Ivy numerous times.
  • Unspoken Plan Guarantee: Ivy asks Terra to make some "privacy" before discussing her plan to take out the Jons, even though no one else is present. This keeps her plan a secret for the big scene in the climax.
  • Would You Like to Hear How They Died?: The Joker enters the Legion of Doom building to announce his return. When he does, he reveals himself to be the one who killed Nightwing.
