In what is a day of developing bonds, Calvin and Linda tell Carl and Grace respectively about their most important high school experience.

Tropes:

  • The '90s: The episode is set in 1991.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Linda is in love with Ryder, who ticks off all of the boxes to be considered a "bad boy".
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: McInnes, who is only pretending to be Calvin's friend. He is the one who encourages Calvin to hook up with Terri-Lynn, causing his breakup with Stacy after the latter finds out.
  • Blatant Lies: Ryder thought Linda was beautiful, even though he found her disgusting and didn't want to date her.
  • Brutal Honesty: Ryder says all of those bad things about Linda, on how she's gross, stumbles around when she's asked a question in class and laughs like a walrus and her liking him weirds him out and how she makes him so uncomfortable.
  • The Bully: Terri-Lynn, who constantly picks on Linda for being fat and unnattractive.
  • Everyone Went to School Together: Calvin went to the same school as Oscar and Janie's mother, Roberto's father, and Roxanne and Kylie's mothers, while Linda went to the same school as Grace's father.
  • Family Theme Naming: Mary-Lynn's aunt is named Terri-Lynn.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: Calvin and Linda actually first met years before Carl and Logan were born, but since they were so physically different back in the day, neither of them recognized the other when meeting more than a decade later.
  • Formerly Fat: Linda.
  • Formerly Fit: Calvin.
  • Former Teen Rebel:
    • Calvin was mostly a Jerk Jock back when he was younger. He has matured a lot ever since then.
    • Bruce Evans went from a rude teenager who wrote on desks and constantly got sent to detention, to a very friendly person and the CEO of a successful company.
  • Framing Device: Calvin tells Carl about his high school years while Linda does the same to Grace.
  • Funny Afro: Mr. Morris had this hairstyle before going bald.
  • Geeky Turn-On: Two ladies at the Python seem to be very fond of Felix's nerdiness.
  • The Glasses Gotta Go: Not only did Linda lose weight after high school, she also ditched her Nerd Glasses.
  • Hilarious in Flashback: Calvin says in a sarcastic tone that he will become a cop in the future. Not only did Calvin become a police officer in the future, but the chief of police.
  • Gratuitous Spanish: Linda calls her father Michael "papi" (spanish for "daddy") after he allows her to go to the Python.
  • Hippie Teacher: Mr. Moore used to look like a hippie during the 90s.
  • Irony:
    • In the 90s, Linda used to be overweight while Calvin was very muscular. In the present day, Linda is very fit while Calvin has put on some weight.
    • Mr. Morris was convienced that he would become a famous musician in the future and that Evans would never achieve anything in his life. 30 years later, Mr. Morris is still the same bitter teacher he was in the past while Evans is the CEO of the company that makes the paper Toad Town High uses.
  • It Will Never Catch On: Michael is reading a report about the internet on the newspaper, to which he says that it is just a fad and in ten years everyone will have moved on to something else like videogames. This doesn't need further explanation.
  • Jerkass
    • McInnes, who pretty much encourages Calvin to hook up with Terri-Lynn, and then tells Stacy about it.
    • Terri-Lynn spends almost every single second she has of screentime bullying Linda.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Linda is deeply in love with Ryder. Ryder defends Linda from Terri-Lynn. Linda thinks Ryder has finally noticed her, Ryder and his friends then insult Linda behind her back and Linda overhears it. Cue to Linda's heart being broken into a million pieces.
  • Like Parent, Like Child:
    • Oscar and Janie's mother is shown to be just as addicted to her phone as her kids. That said, she was previously shown to be addicted to modern day phones as well in "Parents Evening", just like her husband.
    • Roberto's father, just like his son, is a Big Eater.
    • Aftr she catches him cheating on him for the third time, Stacy tells Calvin that he will only end up like his father John if he doesn't change his ways.
  • Morality Chain: Alex tries to be this to Calvin in hopes of preventing him from doing anything stupid that could have a negative effect on his relationship with Stacy.
  • Noodle Incident: Calvin had cheated on Stacy with a cheerleader and a substitute science teacher beforehand.
  • Only Friend: Felix was this to Linda in her teenage years.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Stacy forgave Calvin for cheating on her twice, but a third time is more than enough for her to finally dump him.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Ryder gives this to his friends of what he really thinks about Linda behind her back and Stacy tears Calvin a new one after she saw him and Terri-Lynn in the bathroom.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: Following Calvin's advice, Linda started doing exercise, eating more healthily, and becoming more socially open, essentially becoming the complete opposite of what she used to be.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Terri-Lynn to her niece Mary-Lynn, Maguire to her daughter Janie, and Roberto's father to Roberto.
  • Whole Episode Flashback: Most of the episode is either Calvin or Linda's flashback.
  • You Are Fat: Most of Terri-Lynn's insults to Linda amount to calling her fat.
