In a world where mythological beings like angels exist, Angeline (aka Angie), an angel who is sometimes known for her laziness, is given a task by her aide Mutton (aka Muu): to grant the wishes of over 100 people in Japan, as many of her fellow angels became overwhelmed with the amount of negativity around the country. What follows next is not your typical endeavour regarding angels in a story.

Angie, sick and tired of Muu's bossing, reluctantly accepted his offer, but not without the amount of reservations she had initially. And with that Angie descended to Japan before she begins a fateful encounter with an ordinary college student known as Kumakura. From there, as more characters are slowly being introduced, Hilarity Ensues with Angie as her hijinks as an angel with Kumakura starts here in this world!

biotop is a Slice of Life seinen manga released by hatopopoko, which was published by Dengeki Comics. The manga was written in a Yonkoma format and it ran with only one volume and 17 chapters total (including the bonus chapter) from April 26 2011 to October 26 2013.

Angelic Tropes

  • Aerith and Bob: In terms of the main cast, there's the named characters including Kumakura, Angeline/Angie, Mouton/Muu and Amy.
  • Alliterative Name: Kumakura.
  • Asian Speekee Engrish: Kumakura's first encounter with Angie starts off as this when she initially thought she speaks English before the angel herself bluntly corrects her that she can speak Japanese.
    Kumakura: A-ai kan't spik Engrish.
    Angie: Speak Japanese, stupid.
  • Brought Down to Normal: At the end of Chapter 15, Angie was stripped of her powers as an angel, including her wings and her halo, by her superior, after failing to fulfil her goal of granting 100 humans their own wish. Averted in the next two chapters when she finally fulfil someone's wish, particularly Kumakura, resulting in her powers getting brought back to her again.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Muu, who is possibly the only reasonable face of the manga, speaks with a quiet but snarky manner, largely due to being the Only Sane Man who is often put up with Angie's antics.
  • Fantasy Kitchen Sink: Angels and demons exist alongside humans in Japan.
  • Fish out of Water: Has some overlaps with Hopeless with Tech. Also Played for Laughs. Being an angel in a world with zero technology, Angie herself has virtually no understanding of modern technology and her first reaction to seeing one is no short of surprises. In most cases, Angie mistakes technologies like the smartphone and the digital camera as a "Demonic Apparatus", leading to the latter instance in Chapter 3 where Angie literally throws the camera from afar, to the shock of Kumakura. Fortunately, the camera is still in working condition.
  • Lazy Bum: Unlike most angels depicted in this manga who are hard-workers, Angie seems to be uninterested in her duties and blatantly refuses her aide Muu's offer of granting 100 wishes to the people of Japan. Instead she spends her time with Kumakura behaving lazily and procrastinates a lot about her main duty, to the dismay of Muu. Played With during Chapter 15 when the leader of the Angels decide to (temporarily) strip Angie of her angelic powers for not fulfilling her own quota of giving 100 wishes to other people.
Muu: It's you angels' time to shine. You know, helping people.
    Angie: Sorry, but nah.
  • Minimalist Cast: Only Angie, Kumakura and Muu are the most recurring characters in the story, before Amy joins in.
  • Only Sane Man: Muu, who is unfortunately Surrounded by Idiots, especially Angie and even Amy.
  • Precision F-Strike: At the start of Chapter 17 where Angie briefly comments about her powerless body.
Angie: Having the same body as mortals fucking sucks.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Angie has the appearance of a child, but she is 1200 years old due to being an angel. Oppositely, there's Muu who is 300 years younger than Angie, but he is 900 years old.
  • Ridiculous Procrastinator: Angie fits the trope to a T. Despite Muu's concerns regarding Angie's procrastination, Angie has done absolutely nothing regarding her Wish-Fulfillment duty throughout the manga, which bites her ass in the next 15 chapters once her superior finds out that she has fulfilled zero wishes to 100 people.
  • Slice of Life: Rather than the usual portrayal of angels vs. demons conflict, biotop heavily focuses on Angie's day-to-day hijinks with Kumakura and her other angelic and even demonic friends.
  • The Smurfette Principle: Inverted. Within the main cast, Mouton/Muu is the only male.
  • Token Human: Kumakura is the only unambiguously human character in the main cast.
  • Wish-Fulfillment: Played straight. A part of the story's main arc is with Muu telling Angie to fulfill the wishes of other people in Japan, though Angie would brush his offer off at the start.

Japan's just terrible. Now, go help them out.
