Fanfic / The Sabbat

Go To

The Sabbat is a fanfic written by Finmonster, that has Jack Skellington being recruited by The Guardians to deal with a returning threat.

The Sabbat contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Badass: Considering his Badass Santa credentials, Lock, Shock, and Barrel kidnapping North is a lot more impressive in this universe, especially since they accidentally kidnapped Bunny first. And again when Samhain gifts them with weapons and monstrous shadows that enable them to battle the rest of the Guardians on equal terms.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Jack Frost is not very pleased to learn about the memory erasure the Guardians applied to the Guardians of the Sabbat.
    • North does not like the idea of the Pumpkin King joining the Guardians.
  • Blow You Away: Krampus' gift to Shock is a flying broomstick which can create tornados.
  • Casting a Shadow: Samhain's power.
  • Composite Character: Oogie Boogie and Pitch Black turn out to be two different personas of the same individual, Samhain.
  • Crossover: Between Rise of the Guardians and The Nightmare Before Christmas.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Contrasting with the Boogieman, the Pumpkin King embodies the playfulness of Halloween.
  • Dem Bones: Krampus' gift to Barrel is a sack of bones that he can either pull out one at a time as weapons, or summon whole limbs to fight.
  • Foil: Both Jacks can't remember their human identities, are rather mischievous, and were swore in as Guardians to face a crisis in spite of a member expressing hostility towards them. Where Jack Frost is affiliated with winter and looks human, Jack Skellington is very much a skeleton associated with scares.
  • Have We Met?: During Jack Skellington's fight with Eostre, the latter feels a weird sense of familiarity with the former, with the Pumpkin King being unable to fill in the gaps for her due to his Identity Amnesia. It's only when she sees his flail that she remembers where they met before, but she doesn't elaborate before fleeing.
  • Hero's Evil Predecessor: The Sabbat Guardians to the Guardians of Childhood, intended to 'protect' children by scaring them where the Guardians are intended to make them feel safe. Their ranks include the Krampus, Samhain, Father Time and Eostre.
  • Identity Amnesia: Samhain, Krampus, and their fellows were defeated by inflicting this upon them, with not even the Guardians themselves remembering.
    • It's implied that Jack was transformed from someone in a similar way to Frost, forgetting his old life.
  • Improvised Weapon: During his first fight with Samhain and Krampus, Jack Skellington fights with a jack-o-lantern flail.
  • Invisible to Normals: Jack Skellington somehow bypassed this when he was hijacking Christmas, with Bunny thinking that it was because he usurped North's position.
  • Jerkass to One: North outright forgets his usual cheerfulness around Jack Skellington in favour of verbally tearing the skeleton apart. To be fair, Jack never truly apologized for hijacking Christmas, and after talking with Frost, he realizes this and apologizes.
  • Kill It with Fire: Krampus' gift to Lock is a slingshot that shoots fireballs.
  • Know When to Fold Them: Barrel, after the Guardians defeat him, is fast to surrender.
  • The Krampus: One of the Sabbat Guardians.
  • Last-Name Basis: After Jack Skellington joins the group, Jack Frost is referred to as just "Frost" in the narration.
  • Living Shadow: Lock Shock and Barrel get some monstrous ones as a gift from Samhain to fight the defenses of the Warren while Samhain and Krampus free Eostre.
  • Misplaced Accent: The Krampus has a Scandinavian accent. He's more well-known for being an Austrian demon.
  • Mistaken Identity: Apparently, when kidnapping Santa, Lock, Shock, and Barrel somehow mistook Bunny for him first.
  • Never Found the Body: Lampshaded about Pitch.
  • The Old Gods: The Guardians of the Sabbat.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: Despite Skellington treating him like an old friend, North hasn't forgiven him for the whole 'hijacking Christmas' thing.
  • One-Steve Limit: Jack Frost and Jack Skellington, in the same story; North immediately makes the problems of this clear when he states "Jack is not being Jack" after learning that Jack Skellington is to be chosen as a new Guardian.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Eostre, one of the Guardians of Sabbat, was imprisoned in a tree in Bunny's Warren. Samhain and Krampus team up to release her.
  • Shout-Out:
  • This Cannot Be!: Bunny's reaction to the idea that The Krampus is back.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Jack Frost calls out the other Guardians when he hears about what they did to the Guardians of Sabbat, comparing their ordeal to what he himself went through.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Bunny doesn't like dogs. Samhain, of course, creates dog-shaped constructs to attack him.
  • The Worf Effect: Krampus's offscreen beatdown of North is a major indication of how serious things are.
