    Humans

Assistant

Assistant is the assistant during the astronauts' mission to Mars.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Assistant's spacesuit has blue limbs, and blue is also his favorite color. He is a member of the heroic team of astronauts.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Assistant is only known as Assistant.
  • Flat Character: While Assistant is canonically a member of the astronauts' team, he never appears in the comics or radio logs and therefore has no characterization or personality outside of his online bio.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: Assistant is a navigator and computer programmer who wears glasses.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Assistant's favorite food is mixed nuts.

BB

BB is a young student who entered the Space Lottery and won a trip to Mars.
  • Lead You Can Relate To: In a toyline about astronauts and Martians, it is unsurprising that one of the main characters is a young human kid.
  • Toyless Toyline Character: Subverted. BB was originally toyless when he debuted in the LEGO Space Port book Rocket Rescue, but was released as a physical minifigure when LEGO Life on Mars began.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: BB's favorite food is chocolate bars.
  • Youthful Freckles: BB is the youngest human, and he is the only one with freckles.

Doc

Doc is a super space scientist ready to perform research on Mars.

Mac

Mac is the captain and pilot of the Solar Explorer crew.

    Martians

In general

  • Ambiguous Gender: The official product description of 7302 Worker Robot notes that the Martian pilot might be male or female without providing a conclusive answer.
He (or is it she?) is geared up and ready for work, perhaps mining precious ore.
  • Color-Coded Characters: While most Martians have unique face designs, the easiest way to tell them apart is to look at which color they're wearing. Cassiopeia wears purple, Altair wears lime green, Vega wears orange, etc. These also match their favorite colors in their online bios.
  • Humanoid Aliens: Martians are humanoid enough, with an upright posture, two arms, and two legs. Though, discounting Rock Monsters, the Martians were the first LEGO alien lifeforms to depart from the standard Minifigure design.
  • Martians: It should be obvious from the theme's name, but Life on Mars is all about human astronauts discovering native inhabitants of Mars. Unlike many other depictions of Martians, these Martians are largely friendly towards the humans. However, they weren't always this way; the radio drama The War of the Worlds was actually a true story, and even in modern day there is The Remnant still holding onto their violent past.
  • No Name Given: Several generic unnamed Martians appear in the smaller promotional sets.
  • The Revolution Will Not Be Civilized: The canyon Martians are rebelling against Riegel's peaceful Martian High Council and are plotting to steal all the Biodium and take over Mars.
  • Toyless Toyline Character:
    • None of the Canyon Martians appear in the released sets; while Arcturus is The Mole working with them, it is unclear whether he is actually a Canyon Martian himself.
    • King Yelib, as a Posthumous Character, is only named in the online story and does not appear in sets.
  • Stellar Name: Every Martian is named after a star.
  • Theme Naming: All the Martians are named after stars.
  • Weird World, Weird Food: Like the human astronauts, five of the Martians are given a Trademark Favorite Food in their online bios. None of them are Earthling cuisines.

Altair

Altair is a young friendly Martian pilot.
  • Ace Pilot: Altair is one of the best pilots on Mars.
  • Delinquent Hair: The fact that Altair seemingly has hair when all other Martians are completely bald may factor into his characterization as a young rebel.
  • Rebellious Spirit: Altair is a young Martian who dislikes rules, listens to strange music, and flies too fast.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Altair's favorite food is jeezbirgr.
  • Youthful Freckles: Altair is one of the few Martians with freckles, and he is also described as young.

Antares

Antares is a Martian inventor and doctor.
  • The Engineer: Antares is the inventor of the Aero Tube Hanger.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": In LEGO Soccer Mania, the Martian with Antares's head is only referred to as "Guard".
  • The Medic: Antares is a doctor, and he dislikes Martian flu season, which implies that he works in the medical field in addition to inventing technology such as aero tubes.
  • The Smart Guy: Antares is a brilliant inventor.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Antares's favorite food is vegetable cubes.
  • You Don't Look Like You: LEGO media has a tendency to mix up Antares and Pollux, with the former frequently using the latter's appearance in LEGO Mania Magazine and LEGO Adventures! Magazine comics. LEGO Soccer Mania adds an extra layer of confusion: "Antares" has Pollux's head and Antares's white clothes, and "Guard" has Antares's head and Centauri's blue clothes (while "Centuri" has Centauri's head and Vega's orange clothes).

Arcturus

Arcturus is the former leader of the Martians who once invaded Earth in 1938.
  • Devil in Plain Sight: Arcturus is described as "sinister" in appearance when the astronauts meet him for the first time. And yet, he is a member of the High Council of Mars with nobody suspecting him of being The Mole.
  • The Mole: Arcturus was secretly providing information to the canyon Martians.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Arcturus has red eyes, identifying him as the only villainous Martian in the sets.
  • Red Is Violent: Arcturus wears red, and he is a former interplanetary invader who currently collaborates with a violent rebel faction.
  • The Remnant: Seems to be the case with Arcturus, who still seems bitter about the failed Martian invasion of Earth, is the most distrusting of the human astronauts, and is ultimately revealed to be The Mole.
  • Spell My Name With An S: The former Martian leader is named Arcturus in the online story, which matches the name of the star. But in the instruction booklet for the Aero Tube Hangar, it's spelled "Arctures" instead.

Canopus

Canopus is a scientist who operates the Excavation Searcher.

Cassiopeia

Cassiopeia is the daughter of Riegel who quickly befriends the human astronauts.
  • Action Girl: Cassiopeia is a female Martian who takes initiative in fighting the rebels.
  • Badass Driver: Cassiopeia is a racecar driver in the Galactic Racing Championship.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Cassiopeia is the daughter of the royal ruler, Riegel. She takes an active role in stopping the rebellious canyon Martians, even going out into the field into enemy territory or searching for biodium scrolls.
  • Secret Character: In LEGO Racers 2, the player can play as Cassiopeia on Mars by inputting a cheat code on the main menu.
  • Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: You can tell that Cassiopeia is the only female Martian because she's the only one with noticeable eyelashes.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Cassiopeia's favorite food is Crème de Coutharkin.
  • Wrench Wench: Cassiopeia is not only the Martians' princess, but also a technician with an expertise in robotics.
  • Youthful Freckles: Cassiopeia is one of the few Martians with freckles, and she is also described as young.

Centauri

Centauri is a guard who pilots the Red Planet Protector.

Mizar

Mizar is a Martian who is sympathetic to the humans and helps search for their missing Solar Explorer.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Sabotage! is unique among the radio logs for being the only log entry told from the perspective of a Martian; in this case, Mizar recording Martian Hyperlog, XK.7.

Pollux

Pollux is a member of the Excavation Searcher crew.
  • Adaptation Name Change: In LEGO Soccer Mania, Pollux is identified as "Antares" instead. It's a common mistake in LEGO media for Antares to use Pollux's minifigure, except in this instance Antares also appears as a separate Martian called "Guard".
  • Ambiguous Gender: Strictly speaking, Pollux is not known to be referred to with gendered terms in English media. He is commonly assumed to be male due to lacking Cassiopeia's Tertiary Sexual Characteristics, and due to being indirectly named after a male figure from Classical Mythology.
  • Flat Character: While Pollux does have dialogue and a bonus game in the Game Boy Advance version of LEGO Racers 2, he has very little defined characterization. It doesn't help that most of Pollux's "appearances" in other media are meant to be Antares instead.

Riegel

Riegel is the current general of the main Martian colony, struggling to maintain order while the rebellious canyon Martians are trying to seize control of the planet. For tropes relating to his appearance in LEGO Racers 2, see here.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Riegel is a tough ruler, but he is reasonable enough to work with the humans once he recognizes that they do not pose a threat, and he even asks for their help against the aggressive rebels.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Riegel is described as the Martians' royal ruler. He takes an active role in stopping the rebellious canyon Martians.
  • Secret Character: In LEGO Soccer Mania, Reigel can be unlocked as a character by completing all of the Skill Zone challenges.
  • Spell My Name With An S: The Martian leader's name alternates between three spellings: Riegel, Reigel, and Rigel. It's particularly egregious on this page of LEGO Mania, where both the "Riegel" and "Rigel" spellings are used! Since "Rigel" is the name of the star, it's most likely the correct spelling, but "Riegel" is more consistently used across LEGO media.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Riegel's favorite foods are space slugs and caviack.

Vega

Vega is a support officer with an expertise in excavation.
