Main Characters

    Serena
"This aura... has shown your little friend all of the darkness in her life, and therefore it has shown her a moral: evil and darkness lurks everywhere in the world. Maybe even in herself now."
Nero

A Shaymin hailing from Sinnoh's Flower Paradise, and the first character introduced in the story. Serena is a very gentle, easygoing, and somewhat sensitive Pokemon who constantly worries about the well-being of those around her - especially that of her best friend, Piper, and any children who wind up in her care. Despite previously having lived a rather sedentary life, however, she is shown several times to have a strong sense of adventure, as well some particularly keen problem-solving skills. Although technically genderless, both Piper and Serena are referred to as female in the narration and by other characters.

  • Action Girl: When the time calls for it, she's more than willing to leap into the fray whenever someone's life is on the line.
  • All-Loving Hero: In her normal state, she looks out for and genuinely cares about everyone around her; she doesn't even seem to hate Kareena despite the latter's attacks on her and her friends, and only fights her out of self-defense.
  • Doomed Hometown: The Flower Paradise is invaded by Cipher while she and Piper are being held up by Etno and his cohorts on their way back from helping several other Pokémon who had been kidnapped by Team Rocket and/or Galactic. By the time the Shaymin finally make it home, they no longer have a home to return to; the island has been charred to ruins, and the imminent threat of being killed by the perpetrators forces them to flee.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Later on, shortly after Piper and Serena undergo "transformations" that turn them into vile, cruel shells of their former selves, Piper turns on her best friend, threatening to kill her if she doesn't run immediately while she still has the chance. The sheer sting, on top of everything else the two Shaymin had already been through by that point, causes Serena to sink into a deep depression for quite a while.
  • Sanity Slippage: She subtly undergoes this for quite a while during a series of type "transformations" that she and Piper endure for a portion of the story. But this reaches its peak when she is separated from Piper for a while, and she is eventually Driven to Suicide from a combination of depression and heartbreak. Fortunately for her, her wish at the Hall of Origin brings her back from her fate.
  • Shock and Awe: One of the transformations forced onto her later in the story gives her electrical powers for a short time.

    Piper

A Shaymin who, due to past experimentation by human scientists, is perpetually locked into her Sky Forme. Piper is very shy and extremely timid, but also kindhearted towards those who are fortunate enough to earn her trust. Prior to the start of their adventure, she lived with Serena underneath a large tree on Sinnoh's Flower Paradise. In the aftermath of their home being destroyed, however, she has since taken to wandering the world with her best friend.

  • Et Tu, Brute?: After briefly taking on the guise of "Flaming Piper", she betrays Serena and threatens to murder her in cold blood. But once she comes back around to her senses long after the two Shaymin have already gone their separate ways, she's overcome with guilt and remorse over running her best friend off and reconciles with her at the Hall of Origin.
  • Lovable Coward: Very timid and easily frightened, but all the more huggable because of it.
  • Playing with Fire: Her "Flaming Darkness" alter-ego turns her into a Fire-type version of herself.

Supporting Characters

    Bella
"We've been through a lot of things today... Some good, some heartbreaking. But we should all keep our heads held high; I'm sure things will get better."

A very gentle, if not slightly mischievous Zorua - and later, Zoroark - who is also Vladimir's closest friend. She's mostly passive and seems to enjoy just taking it easy whenever she and her friends aren't traveling. But when the time comes, she certainly doesn't mind getting her hands a little dirty to fight off whatever evils may be threatening those around her.

  • Apologetic Attacker: After she maims Twilight's face and nearly gouges one of her eyes out without actually meaning to, she feels horrible about doing so, silently apologizes to her, and immediately backs down from their fight.
  • Berserk Button: Vladimir's experimental pills. When he pulls one out in front of her after she's been cured of the first one's effects from the beginning of the story, she uncharacteristically grabs it from him and chucks it far away before storming off.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: As Twilight discovers the hard way, Bella isn't easy prey to take down in a scrap. Not only does she manage to KO her evil twin, who has a type advantage over her, but is not above shifting into Mama Bear mode whenever her friends (and especially the resident Zorua pair, Midnite and Lily) are threatened... and it isn't pretty.
  • Younger Than They Look: Bella is stated to be somewhere around thirteen, though she no longer acts the part once she evolves.

    Mystic
"Hey, we know it's hard. But I know we'll get there. We're all a team, and we'll find a way through this crisis, no matter what. [Beat] ... Bluk berry?"

A peculiar Snivy with a partial Psychic-typing, stated to be an ex-affiliate of Team Plasma's as well as a lab experiment of some kind. She masquerades as a Garchomp (under the alias "Tsume") by traveling inside of a mechanical suit of armor made into the likeness of one - and not exactly for heroic reasons. During one such spree an unidentified number of years ago, she apparently ran into Vladimir and kicked off some bad blood between the two of them. Nowadays, however, she lives a much more honest and carefree life on board Morgana's airship cruiser with the rest of the cast, which she takes turns co-piloting with Nazuzu.

  • Big Eater: She can be seen stuffing her face quite often, and eats an awful lot for someone of her size. She isn't too picky, either, given how she scarfs down a helping of mystery meat just as eagerly as she would a berry.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: She's as smart as can be, but certainly capitalizes on the "lazy" bit.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Almost anything that comes out of her mouth is guaranteed to be tinged with sarcasm.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: She manages the upkeep of her stolen robot Garchomp all on her own. Later on, she even becomes a co-pilot of Morgana's airship after Nazuzu teaches her the basics, and sometimes helps Tiktok and Klawkwerk with technical maintenance.
  • Irony: Joins in referring to Vladimir as "the plant" despite belonging to the same evolutionary line as him.
  • The Man Behind the Curtain: A non-villainous example. Because of the way she uses her Garchomp mech, it comes as quite a surprise to the other travelers later on when it's revealed that she is, in fact, nothing more than a Snivy.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite her sardonic and sometimes bitter tendencies, she genuinely does care about her traveling companions.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Bluk berries and anything made from them - usually juice, as a stand-in for a cup of morning coffee.

    Neo

Discovered on a cruise ship as an abandoned, nameless, and hapless Deino, Neo is a pacifistic young Hydreigon who was carefully raised by Bella and Mystic over the course of the story.

  • Batman in My Basement: Attempted by Mystic, but it isn't long before it's discovered that she's been trying to feed and care for Deino!Neo, hiding him in his PokéBall between meals, without the rest of the gang noticing.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: He's one of the nicest characters in the story despite belonging to a species with a terrifying reputation, most likely as a result of Bella's friendship rubbing off on him.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": Before evolving into a Hydreigon, he was simply referred to as "Deino" and "Zweilous".
  • Gentle Giant: Under normal circumstances, he is tame and wouldn't hurt a fly.
  • Meaningful Rename: "Neo" means "new", of course. Fittingly for someone who had previously been blind for the entirety of his life, and as such, is still new to the sights of the world around him, as well as adjusting to his new life. The name is given a double meaning in subsequent adaptations of Cross Region Adventure or other works that he appears in, as he is also reimagined as a shiny Deino/Zweilous/Hydreigon.
  • Parental Abandonment: Or trainer abandonment in his case. Mystic discovers a Dusk Ball while snooping around for food on a ship to Johto, which she hangs on to even after the group disembarks for Ilex Forest. She finds a young Neo inside and resolves to get him back to his human partner somehow, but it never happens.

    Prince Nero
"What did I do? I tried out a special secretion on [Serena] and her friend. As a result, they have been mutated into aquatic creatures, though I'm unsure if they're amphibious or not yet..."

An offputting Frillish who is (according to him, anyhow) the prince of an undersea kingdom. Piper and Serena are introduced to him when his Jellicent swarm shipwrecks a cruiser that they had been hitching a ride on, and he develops a bit of an obsession with the two after dragging them down to his lair while they're both unconscious, where he successfully turns them both into amphibious creatures. He later integrates himself into the main group (aboard another ship, no less) after the two Shaymin escape from his clutches. When he discovers the magic of transformation, he uses it to take on the form of a Drifblim, and eventually, a Chandelure.

  • Beware the Silly Ones: He is definitely pretty silly, and difficult to take seriously later on in the story. But this is still the same 'Mon who, like Vladimir, has made what may as well be a scientific breakthrough in the biology field in just his introductory scene alone. And when he does get serious on the battlefield, he's certainly nothing to play with.
  • Companion Cube: He can't bear to be without the transformation stone that winds up in his grasp, going so far as to even give it a name ("Stoney") and pleading for the stone to be returned to him unharmed when Kareena swipes it from under his nose.
Vladimir: He loves that stone a little too much.
  • Henpecked Husband: As can be gathered from what is seen and described of his wife, whose fury is about the only thing that Nero is afraid of.
"Just as he turned to head back to his lab: 'NERO! Where have you been?! I've been looking for you, you squishy good for nothing husband!' His wife, a clearly angered female Frillish, came and grabbed him by the ruff around his neck, dragging him back to their cavern. He shuddered, unable to do anything but twiddle his thumbs while he awaited his inevitable scolding for staying out too long."
  • Manchild: Not quite so in the beginning, but when he comes back after being absent from the narrative for a while, it seems to be with a few less screws. He alternates between being hyperactive and lazy, is generally immature, and obsesses over transformation stones.
  • Porn Stash: Rururii bumps into a sleeping Nero while going for a nightly stroll, and draped across his face is what even Rii can make out as a lewd-looking magazine. Later when Jetstream the Rufflet is discovered in the ship's crow's nest (where Nero sleeps at night), his first concern is that his magazines might have been seen by prying eyes.

    Gallade

A lone Gallade that the main crew picks up at a dock on their way to Unova. He has a penchant for attracting ladies, but none of them really tickle his fancy... until he meets a certain Lucario.

  • Chick Magnet: Quite a few female Pokémon are enchanted by his looks, though this falls more into Cursed with Awesome from his perspective.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": He is one of the few Pokémon characters without a name.
  • Ret-Gone: In supplementary Cross Region Adventure material and later adaptations, he's simply removed from the story and never mentioned again by any of the other returning characters.
  • Unresolved Sexual Tension: With Rikki, who never gets a chance to confess her feelings to him.
