Go To

It all started with an idea in the Friday Night Funkin' community: what if someone else sang "Ugh" instead of Tankman or Boyfriend? Then YouTuber Blantados managed to figure out how to isolate the voicebanks of just about every single character, vanilla and modded, and even generate new ones for characters that didn't have their own. Soon enough, he got Senpai and Tankman to sing it together, and following several more cover videos, had "Ugh" sang by (almost) the entire vanilla cast and popular mod characters. The rest is history.

Such begins BETADCIU ("But Every Turn a Different Cover Is Used"), a Massive Multiplayer Crossover between dozens of mods for Friday Night Funkin'. As the title implies, the playable version of the mod began with Blantados's "Guns" video, but has evolved to also host the standalone covers with two characters that started it all while even developing some semblance of actual plots to said covers. The genre of videos spawned by it has grown to be one of the most popular at the community's peak to the point of inspiring other content creators to try their hand at their own covers, but BETADCIU remains as the de-facto origin point.

The playable version of the mod featuring almost all covers created to date can be found here, and the mod wiki has a download link on its respective page.

Note: The playable version of BETADCIU contains several sneak peeks of upcoming projects publicly teased by Blantados (and some that haven't been.) All examples referring to them have been spoilered out, but proceed at your own risk of having the surprise ruined later. You have been warned!

Tropes applying to BETADCIU and other covers done by Blantados:

  • Adaptational Jerkass:
    • A possibility. Nenechi shows some signs of Blood Knight tendencies that are absent in HoloFunk and hololive, seeing Senpai's continued physical deterioration as little more than an opportunity for Aloe to sharpen her singing skills at the poor guy's expense. In fact, throughout the "Ectospasm" cover, her sprites are edited to show a smug grin staring in Senpai's direction. Of course, it could also be attributed to Nenechi's actual childish behavior causing her to not be able to see the forest for the trees.
    • Even before Tord originally left, none of the boys in Eddsworld actually attack or hurt any children whatsoever (at least not with malicious intent) in their home series. In "SpookEDD", Tord appears to be a flatout Child Hater, hurting Skid and Pump with a missle for no reason.
  • Adaptation Expansion:
    • The "Hands" BETADCIU includes extra charting for the instrumental breaks (and thus allowing for more characters to appear than with the original chart.)
    • Amelia, Gura, Nenechi, and Aloe now all sing in their real voices instead of the characters they replace in HoloFunk, thus decoupling them from said characters and allowing them to function as separate entities in both song and story.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: A platonic (for now) case with Botan, who is in a close friendship with the Ax-Crazy Pico. It's heavily implied she actually is rubbing off on him for the better.
  • Art Evolution: Blantados' Author Avatar received a new sprite as of the "Aspirer" cover.
  • Author Appeal:
    • hololive, big time. Amelia, Gura, Nenechi, and Aloe all have their own voicebanks custom-made by Blantados to replace Pump, Skid, and Boyfriend's vocals respectively, every BETADCIU from "Nerves" onward uses HoloFunk vocals at some point, Botan gets a central role in one of the mod's Story Arcs, the "Hands" BETADCIU is currently the one that deviates the most from the original chart and visuals, and HoloFunk itself is second only to Mid-Fight Masses in terms of how many standalone covers feature its music or characters. A hololive cover of "Deathmatch" is also the final secret meant to be unlocked in Update 8, and the "Copycat" cover is the first public demonstration of Nenechi's Player Character sprites in gameplay for HoloFunk.
    • Kaguya Shinomiya appears in almost all of Blantados's original compositions, and was implemented specifically for that purpose.
  • Author Avatar:
    • Blantad, Blantados's literal YouTube avatar is a separate character in the mod, initially used as an extra set of vocals but is later revealed to be an all-powerful being akin to Nonsense.
    • The Author Avatars of fellow BETADCIU makers Neonight and SnowTheFox make appearances in the "Killer Scream" BETADCIU.
  • Battle in the Center of the Mind:
    • The "Tormentor" cover features Senpai battling Spirit in much the same way that Boyfriend fought Soul Boyfriend during the events of the original mod.
    • The "Phantasm" cover has Eduardo trying to take control over a version of himself that sings in nothing but the word "well", referencing a meme stemming from his appearance in Friday Night Funkin' Online VS..
  • Big "SHUT UP!": In "SpookEDD", Eduardo butting in after Tord attacks Skid and Pump causes Tord to let out an exasperated "Oh, SHUT UP!", yelling loud enough that whatever Eduardo is saying is completely drowned out.
  • Bowdlerise: Though Sunday Night Suicide is used often, its name is always edited to avoid the word "Suicide". Its first use, in Sonic.EXE and Sonic's cover of "Happy", the description cuts it short at Suicide, the second use, Yuri and Girlfriend's cover of "Really Happy", calls it "So Sad Mouse", and its third use in the "Killer Scream" BETADCIU calls it "Sad Mouse".
  • Break the Cutie: Nenechi is clearly on the verge of tears watching Senpai fade away in front of Tankman, likely because she herself nearly lost Aloe to Daddy Dearest and is watching the same thing happen again with another pair of friends.
  • The Cameo: The "Killer Scream" BETADCIU features the Author Avatar of fellow Friday Night Funkin' YouTuber and BETADCIU maker Neonight, fittingly facing off against Blantad. Later in the song, the avatar of the similar SnowTheFox also appears.
  • Camera Perspective Switch: Averted: Sonic has no back sprites, so the Xenophanes segments of the "Triple Trouble" cover between Sonic and the 1.5 VS. Sonic.exe cast are from the game's regular perspective rather than the over the shoulder view from the original mod.
  • Character Exaggeration: Nenechi's vocals make use of the absolute highest register the real Nene Momosuzu can reach, and stay there despite it normally being reserved for extreme frustration.
  • Color Motif: In the "Lore" BETADCIU, every character that replaces Ourple Guy has a primarily purple color scheme to match him.
  • Confronting Your Imposter: "No Fakers" is Sonic vs. EXE. As the song progresses, EXE has trouble keeping up his disguise and ultimately drops it by the end of the song.
  • Continuity Nod: In "Confronting Yourself":
    • When the Green Hill Zone portion of "Confronting Yourself" plays, it's played by both Daddy Dearest and Senpai, in reference to the cover of "You Can't Run" featuring them similarly singing the Green Hill Zone melody as the latter gets trapped in Hating Simulator.
    • The first time Sonic.EXE catches up to Sonic, he starts slowing back down when Ski appears, giving the impression that he's backing off because of her. This references the "Buffer" cover between them.
    • Red and Cheeky have to face Tankman and Nenechi, who befriended each other in the "Senpai and Tankman" series.
    • Sunday and Rushia duet near the end of the song, referencing the "BI-NB" cover and the piece of fanart that inspired it.
  • Cover Version: Basically the entire point is to have Friday Night Funkin' characters sing songs that other characters originally sing.
  • Damage Over Time: Taki retains the ability to push back the health bar from their original songs. Calli also gains this ability in "Deathmatch-Holo," though this stops being the case during Coco's turn to echo the original verse from Corruption.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Pico during the events of Pico & Guns, as a result of meeting Botan. The Time Skip between the "Guns" and the "Ballistic" cover indicates that this has apparently developed to the point where Botan is able to prod him into being nice to others, especially when she's upset.
  • Deliberately Monochrome:
    • To emulate the visuals of the original "Storm," the BETADCIU of it has everyone redrawn in black-and-white outlines. As Tankman already fits this description, his colors are instead inverted in a manner similar to the hypothetical Tankmen 0.
    • Any cover featuring content from Sunday Night Suicide will have the characters recolored in black, white, and gray to match the colors of the original mod.
    • All characters in "Unwell" are made monochrome to match Eduardo's sprites in the song.
  • Demoted to Extra: Boyfriend and, to a lesser extent, Girlfriend, don't appear nearly as much as in canon. While Girlfriend does have a few covers of her own, the only cover Boyfriend has is "Synthesize", a song based on "Happy Synthesizer". Further pushing him into the ground is the fact that Aloe now has her own vocals scrounged together from what little official content exists of her, which only further increases the amount of songs available to make covers of at his expense.
  • Do Not Spoil This Ending: A disclaimer asking not to record and upload any hidden content locked behind the passcode appears upon launching Update 8.
  • Dramatic Irony: The subplot of the Senpai & Tankman arc featuring HoloFunk has Nenechi egging Aloe into fighting Senpai, eventually turning into a Let's You and Him Fight scuffle under the pretense of keeping him alive. No one in the stage seems aware that Aloe and Senpai are cut from the same cloth as victims of Daddy Dearest at his most cruel.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness:
    • The older videos that were released before Online VS. had "Challeng-Edd" have the Eddsworld boys appear as they do in Legacy, using sprites from Vs. Eddsworld.
    • As Monika Full Week hadn't been updated to Doki Doki Takeover! at the time, older videos that had Monika had her in her pixelated appearance, even in songs that don't take place in Hating Simulator, and her non-pixelated sprite looked different due to being made by a different artist. None of the other girls from that mod are present for the same reason.
  • Everyone Has Standards: At the end of "SpookEDD", Edd and Matt, who are at the very least anti-heroes in Eddsworld, are horrified at seeing Skid and Pump injured by Tord. Apparently, even they are against hurting children.
Matt: YOU'VE GOT TO SAVE THE CHILDREN!!
  • Evil Twin: The mod introduces one of CJ created by the Auditor.
  • Expressive Mask: Kanata's sunglasses, which change to a nervous look at the halfway point in the "Hands" BETADCIU.
  • Fanboy: Blantad shares Blantados's adoration of Aloe, as his updated appearance as of the "Lore D-Side" BETADCIU now has him keep a plush of her by his side at all times.
  • Fighting from the Inside: The Phantasm cover is Eduardo singing against... himself. To be more specific, whereas in the original "Phantasm" had Sonic switching back and forth between himself and Super Sonic, here Eduardo switches between being worried and depressed to acting like the meme surrounding his appearance in Challenge-Edd, saying "Well, well, well" over and over.
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: "Name Please" features the extremely peppy sounding "Buffer" sung by Ski, a Super-Deformed version of Sky… against Sonic.exe.
  • Gotta Have It, Gonna Steal It: Pico tries to hold Cesar at gunpoint for his own decorated Uzi after catching a glimpse of it. Botan isn't too happy about him trying to do this.
  • The Grinch: Apparently, Tankman is one, as his mashup of "Ugh" and "Hope" is called "Ugh! I hate Christmas!"
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Senpai and Tankman, having bonded over their shared love of each other's songs. When they're together, Senpai is shown with a smile.
  • History Repeats: The HoloFunk versions of Nenechi and Aloe endured Daddy Dearest successfully breaking up the two in their Backstory Horror, reuniting only by chance after Aloe was pressured into leaving for the surface world. A plot detour in the Senpai and Tankman arc has them run into the titular duo, which ends in them forced to watch Senpai fade away despite him and Tankman similarly going through great efforts to get away from the Dearests.
  • Homage: "Synthesize" is the first piece of HoloFunk-related content to actually pay tribute to hololive proper, being a homage to the song "Happy Synthesizer" which is heavily associated with the real Mano Aloe.
  • Humble Pie: The aftermath of Pico and Cesar's "Ballistic" cover has Botan (who he had befriended sometime prior in a "Guns" cover) find out what the former was trying to do. She gets upset and immediately makes Pico apologize, melting down his haughty attitude and completely humiliating him in front of his own mark in the process.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: Daddy Dearest is cornered by Senpai and his allies and sealed in Hating Simulator for his crimes after their "Deathmatch" cover.
  • Interface Screw:
    • The "Takeover" BETADCIU has the judgement line spinning around like in the original mod. After Monika appears, the scroll option (up/down) is changed to the opposite of what the player has it configured to until Bob's turn.
    • Just like in "Monochrome" proper, Monika and Sayori's cover of it has you type various things before the time runs out, albeit in a text box rather than Unown speak.
  • Massive Multiplayer Crossover: The mod is essentially what Super Smash Bros. is to video gaming in general for Friday Night Funkin' mods: a celebration of the countless characters created and given popularity through the power of modding.
  • Mind over Matter: Blantad lifts both limos and the shopping cart containing NePoLaBo above the clouds during the "Hands" BETADCIU's halfway point, and lingers in the background holding them there after his turn is done.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • In general, BETADCIU pairings will usually try to put together characters who have connections to each other in canon or fanon, ranging from duos like Bob & Bosip to more esoteric pairings like Bob and Opheebop.
    • Blantad is sometimes associated with Henry Stickmin in BETADCIU pairings and standalone covers, as Blantados used to cover Henry Stickmin before moving onto Friday Night Funkin'.
    • The screen still shakes whenever Ruv gets a turn, just like in his mod.
    • The title for the "Copycat" cover with Nenechi and Nene blanks out on a descriptor for the former, referencing Nenechi's infamous laundry list of other titles.
    • The Friday Night Funkin': Tails Gets Trolled version of Sonic goes through his turn in "Killer Scream" with his "fake smile" animations without ever stopping to show its idle animation, just like in "No Villains."
    • Most characters in the "Killer Scream" BETADCIU who hit Rushia's attack notes reference something from their source material: Midas switches to his shadow version; Sonic.EXE does his Jump Scare; Nenechi, Sticky, Zipper, Cesar, Woody, Alucard, and Mickey all use screams/visuals isolated from their origins; Peri flashes Jojo symbols onscreen; Tankman does his special "Ugh" pose; Hex turns the background into a Blue Screen of Death; and the Auditor flashes the text from his standalone mod.
    • The cover of "Triple Trouble" featuring Sonic and the opponents present in the 1.5 update of Vs. Sonic.exe has Sunky's jumpscare be the same one from Sunky.MPEG, while Majin Sonic's is the "Fun is Infinite" screen he originated from. In addition, Lord X's replacement for Robotnik's laugh is the Kefka laugh, which is associated with him just as much as the original Sonic.exe.
    • Similar to the "Killer Scream" cover, "Confronting Yourself" has the opponents replacing Sonic.exe's laugh with one of their own; Demoman uses his laugh from the Vs Sonic.exe cover "You Can't Pan", Fleetway Super Sonic and B3 Girlfriend use voice clips from "Chaos" and "Nom" respectively, and Rushia uses a laugh from one of her own videos.
    • The "Lore" cover begins with the victory screen from Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location's custom night before the cover begins.
    • The appearences of Eduardo and Tord in "SpookEDD" are marked by the Scare Chord that plays at the start of "Winter Horrorland".
    • The sprites for the knocked out Skid and Pump at the end of "SpookEDD" are redraws of their poses after the two decide to visit the hospital and "die" on the spot in "Unwanted Guest".
  • Nerf:
    • Spirit's and Aloe's cover of "Ectospasm" lacks all of its gimmicks, and its Interface Screw isn't nearly as bad.
    • Zig-Zagged in Monika and Sayori's cover of "Monochrome". The things you have to type are easier to decide at a glance, due to it being in proper English rather than Unown, but you need to add spaces when needed, and mistakes need to be backspaced rather than just not appearing. Also, the Maximum HP Reduction courtesy of Celebi is absent.
    • Tord's health drain is more forgiving in "SpookEDD" compared to "Challeng-Edd", presumably as a balance to having to play both Edd and Eduardo's sections beforehand as well as the song's overall in increase in difficulty compared to the original.
  • No Fair Cheating:
    • Using the debug console to load a song from the extras menu sends you to a spoof of the "Fun is Infinite" Easter Egg from Sonic CD instead.
    • Prior to Update 8.5, the sprites for the first "Deathmatch" cover were stored in a .rar file within the mod's assets that prevents the game from loading the songs with the debug menu and which cannot be extracted without a password. Meeting their unlock requirements will give said password and allow the sprites to be moved into their proper locations.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted with both the official example of human Bob and the other Bob, along with Nene Momosuzu and Nene from Pico's School. To avoid confusion, this article refers to the former by her nickname Nenechi.
  • Orwellian Retcon: Update 11.5 removes Botan's blushing at the sight of Pico from the "Hands" BETADCIU, both because Blantados's intent was for her friendship to be platonic and because the romantic undertones clash with an intentionally-placed lore bit in HoloFunk.
  • Palette Swap: The "Diva" BETADCIU recolors some characters featured to match the aesthetic of their equivalent and adjacent characters in the B3 Remixes mod. For example, Sky has Bartholomew's t-shirt logo, green hair, and purple pants, while Botan gets Pico's red clothing and sunglasses.
  • Promoted to Playable:
    • Due to the nature of the BETADCIU, each cover features characters not normally played as in the player chracter spot constantly.
    • "SpookEDD", a remix of "Challeng-Edd", has the player play as Skid and Pump rather than Boyfriend, who are only opponents in the base game. After Tord knocks the two out, Eduardo, who isn't playable at all in Online Vs., takes their place.
  • Reimagining the Artifact: "Deathmatch-Holo" is based on an old concept for Week 6 in HoloFunk, where Aloe and Nenechi would've been jumped by an impersonator serving as the Corruption's counterpart after defeating the first opponent (at the time Nekomata Okayu.) Presumably, "Deathmatch-Holo" is the boiling point of a Bad Future created from them losing to it.
  • Secret Level:
    • Extra content can be accessed in the mod with a password, usually containing unfinished or unrefined projects that aren't ready to post to Blantados's channel yet.
    • In Update 8, clearing the covers of "Lament" and "Dusk" without missing or getting a single "Bad" rating unlocks a new cover of "Deathmatch" where Senpai gets his revenge on Daddy Dearest with the help of a few others. You can then repeat the unlock method with that cover to get another cover, which instead has the corruption spreading to the HoloFunk cast as they attempt to take down Calli with them. 8.5 would later change the songs required to start the chain to "Roots" and "Sorrow" from the extras menu, making it require the password as well but also removing the first "Deathmatch" cover, skipping straight to "Deathmatch-Holo."
    • In the 8.0 update, a song named "Restore" may randomly appear when browsing the bonus song list.
  • Self-Deprecation: In the "Momi Roll" cover featuring Aloe and Senpai, Blantad himself In-Universe notes how Senpai already used the line "I've got nothing better to do" twice already, remarking that his story writing is "pretty bad".
  • Ship Tease: The Pico & Guns arc features Pico and Botan developing a friendship out of their shared love of guns, with the aftermath of its "Ballistic" cover suggesting they've gotten close enough that Pico actually listens to her demands while Botan happily keeps the gun-toting lunatic in check. The "Hands" BETADCIU is where this trope fully comes into effect, though, as Botan lets loose a barely-hidden blush when Pico appears. They also sing together on the same side for part of the hidden BETADCIU of "Shinkyoku." Which, mind you, is set inside a Dating Sim.
  • Shout-Out: Blantad's telekinesis during the "Hands" BETADCIU echoes that of Silver the Hedgehog. Also doubles as a Mythology Gag in the sense that Blantados's first content was related to Sonic.
  • Soundtrack Dissonance: Discussed with the "Sharkventure" cover featuring K.O.U. and Liz (fittingly dubbed "A Happy Song in a Spooky Mansion"), as the entire point for its existence is the sheer Irony of such a positive-sounding song playing in a place as foreboding as Daddy Dearest's mansion; the two characters were chosen specifically to crank it up even harder.
  • Stealth Pun: The "Context" cover has Sky suddenly forced to deal with Aloe and Nene who have burst into the white manifest void out of nowhere and don't have anything to do with Boyfriend in-universe outside of Word of God mentions. In other words, she's been saddled with an Outside-Context Problem.
  • Story Arc:
    • The mod prominently features a series of connected covers started by Tankman being thrown into Hating Simulator, eventually crossing over with the Doki Doki Takeover! mod back when it was still Monika Full Week in the process and getting an original remix.
    • On a smaller scale, there's also the "Pico & Guns" arc, which consists of Pico singing with various characters that have guns (and befriending one in the process.)
  • Suddenly Voiced: The cover of "Monochrome" starts with Monika asking "Uh, can you hear me?", replacing Gold's "I'M DEAD'" from the original mod.
  • Sugar Apocalypse: "Deathmatch-Holo," which recreates the final song of Week 7 from Corruption with the bright, cutesy cast of hololive and thus turns them into bloodthirsty monsters. Update 10 even gives everyone matching visualsnote  to really bring out the whiplash, and Update 11.5 adds in even more grit by changing the music and vocals to match PieDaDude's "Deathmatch Project" remix.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: A BETADCIU may sometimes opt to use Boyfriend's fanon parents created by MizanPloz instead of Daddy Dearest and Mommy Mearest, despite the fact that they're skin mods with no unique vocals; if used, Daddy Dearest's and Mommy Mearest's vocals are merely pitched up a tad to differentiate them.
  • There Can Be Only One: Likely Sky's mentality during the "Norski" cover, having found out that there's a girl with a name similar to hers (Skye). Adding to this, Sky is shown in her "Manifest" form, with an even angrier expression than usual.
  • Villainous Breakdown: After Tord knocks out Skid and Pump and Eduardo just starts singing in their place, Tord goes from sadistic glee to actual anger, glaring daggers at Edd and Eduardo while sending barrages of notes at the two in the final moments of "SpookEDD". His missle notes also go from being in time with the song to sent out with little rhyme or reason, including three in a row when they can't even be hit.
  • Vocal Range Exceeded: Sticky and Cesar's screams during the "Killer Scream" BETADCIU have noticeable voice cracks in them and are pitched much higher than Rushia's actual screams in the original song.
  • Wide Eyes and Shrunken Irises: Nenechi gets these out of shock during the "Hands" BETADCIU, an appropriate reaction to suddenly being lifted up above the clouds in a shopping cart.
  • Wingding Eyes: Played for Horror. Similar to corrupted Skid's Xs for eyes, corrupted Aloe has hearts for eyes, with her original eyes sunken back into the rest of the black gunk consuming her.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Tord manages to kill or at least injure Skid and Pump during his part of "SpookEDD". Him glaring at the two for no disernable reason at the start of his section implies he doesn't really like them in general.
