   • Final Fantasy XIV plays with this trope a tad in the A Realm Reborn era. After the events of the final battle in 1.0, the story opens up five years later with many of the city-states trying to rebuild after the lesser moon Dalmund appeared over Eorzea and broke open, unleashing the dragon Bahamut. They find themselves besieged not only by the beast tribes who seek to take advantage of this by summoning their gods but also by the Garlean Empire, who seeks to continue their reign of conquest. Probably worst off in this are the Amalj'aa race, where a vast majority of their kind have been tempered by their god Ifrit, that the very very few who haven't are hiding in constant fear. The Shadowbringers expansion has another example in "The First", an alternate reality in The Multiverse where the balance between Light and Darkness was disrupted to the point that the power of Light destroyed most of the world. All that remains is the continent of Norvrandt, and its myriad peoples and remaining settlements are struggling to deal with the fallout from the Flood of Light. Beyond Norvrandt, there is only the Empty, a vast, lifeless desert.

   • Good Colors, Evil Colors: Inverted with the reveal that the Mad Burnish are actually the good guys, and the true villain is a case of Light Is Not Good. Burning Rescue do remain heroic however.

However, Oma Zi-O, which combined the powers of all Heisei Riders, originally belonged to Sougo's villianous future self which the present Sougo sought to avoid thoroughout his series, while Aruto, who has directly been fighting the Ark and its minions, becomes its host for revenge by using The Power of Hate before and during his time as Ark-One. How they are each dealt with is also notable: Sougo never fully succumbed to the power of Oma as proven when he willingly gave up the power to repair all of the worlds, while Aruto goes through an Heel Realization and allows Ark-One to be destroyed to overcome his malice.

    • The Thrawn Trilogy notably frames Grand Admiral Thrawn and Joruus C'baoth as Foils of Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader, respectively, making it clear that the series wouldn't simply be a retread of the Original Trilogy. While Palpatine was an ominous black-cloaked card-carrying human villain known for his sadism and his mastery of the Dark Side, Thrawn is an impeccably cultured Officer and a Gentleman known for his tactical brilliance and his love of art, as well as a Human Alien who habitually dresses in well-tailored white military regalia. Likewise, while Vader was a tragically corrupted Dark Jedi known for his stoicism and physical discipline, and he ultimately turned against Palpatine in a Heel–Face Turn, C'baoth is the insane clone of a legendary Jedi Master who's brought down by his own mental instability, and Thrawn turns against him when it becomes clear that he can't be controlled.
    • New Jedi Order: The Vong's leader, Supreme Overlord Shimrra, also contrasts with Palpatine, as is explicitly pointed out by Luke when he and Shimrra meet. Palpatine is a withered old man, while Shimrra is a towering warrior in his physical prime; Palpatine has a darkness motif while Shimrra has a rainbow motif; Palpatine was the ruler of the Galaxy Far Far Away while Shimrra rules an outside force trying to take it over; Palpatine came to power by guile, while Shimrra came to power via military coup; Palpatine subverted the Republic to create the Empire, while Shimrra is merely the latest in a thousand-year dynasty of tyrannical Supreme Overlords; Palpatine chiefly relies on his cunning and the power of the Dark Side, while Shimrra is a physically powerful warrior whose enhanced powers come from Bio-Augmentation rather than the Force and has no problem getting his own hands dirty; Palpatine is well-known to the people of the galaxy as ruler of the Empire, while most non-Vong have barely heard of Shimrra until relatively late in the war; Palpatine spends most of his encounter with Luke trying to turn him to his side, while Shimrra and Luke just duel.     • (from description) Alternatively, he can simply be a natural part of Eternal Recurrence, representing the destruction of the old that must take place to allow room for the new. His name may be associated with The Cycle of Empires, Order Versus Chaos, and Gaia's Vengeance. Besides being leader of the Law faction, YHVH is a Light Is Not Good Knight Templar usually responsible for whatever Crapsack World you find yourself in.
    • Demonic Possession: In Digital Devil Saga, this is what happens to people who can't control their Atma Avatars, they lose their human identity and believe they truly are the mythological figures they represent, making it a horrific combo between Type 1 and 2. The first cases were the Four Seraphs, Metatron and Meganada.
    • Signature Move: Metatron has Fire of Sinai, a rain of Almighty-type holy fire.
    • Signature Move: Every Fiend has a signature move in Nocturne: Matador has Red Capote and Andalucia, Daisojou has Preach and Meditation, Hell Biker has Hell Exhaust and Hell Burner, White Rider has God's Bow, Red Rider has Terrorblade, Black Rider has Soul Divide, Pale Rider has Pestilence, the Harlot has Beast Roar and Trumpeter has Evil Melody and Holy Melody. Others examples are Skadi (Earthquake), Amaterasu (Godly Light), Dante (his entire moveset), Pazuzu (Wet Wind) Kurama Tengu (Starlight), Mada (Intoxicate), Valkyrie (Soul Recruit), Mithra (Death Pact) and Dionysius (Wine Party). Each of the Conception gods has at least one: Ahriman has Hell's Call and Apocalypse, Noah has Domination and Baal Avatar has Bael's Bane.

    • (Fridge Brilliance): Let's examine Death Note and Code Geass: Death Note is a dark anime, in which most of the scenes and characters are dark and toned, and it contains a Crapsack World, but also a protagonist who subscribes to Light Is Not Good. Code Geass, on the other hand, seems much more straightforward and even optimistic, uses a lot of bright colors in its characters and scenery, and comes with a protagonist who subscribes (at least initially) to Dark Is Not Evil.     • Colour-Coded for Your Convenience: White — almost uniformly connected to goodness (Albus Dumbledore, Patronuses), except Voldemort's unnatural chalk-white skin. The final stage of Voldemort's body regeneration potion is also glows so bright white that Harry sees it through eyes screwed shut.

    • Breath of Fire III: This incarnation of the goddess Myria is a draconic ruler who truly wishes for peace and order no matter what she has to do. Witnessing humanity destroy itself with over-advancement and the expansion of the Desert of Death, Myria detached most of world in an isolated island, trapping it in her design where it's kept static under her rule away from potential destruction. Fearing the Brood for their destructive power, Myria created the Guardians to massacre them, before sealing away her remaining adversaries. Successfully manipulating history in embracing her architecture, by framing her adversaries as evil, Myria maintains her sanctuary for decades until the appearance of a surviving Brood name Ryu who she observes and later makes numerous attempts for his life including turning his own adoptive brother against him. While ruthless and smothering, Myria's true ambition is preventing potential catastrophe who till the end only did what she did out of misguided love.

    • Berserk: Guts and Griffith were born in squalor and grew into the mercenary life to become a superhuman Master Swordsman capable of leading the Band of the Hawk (as Guts discovers when the former leader Griffith was rendered lame and crippled due to being tortured for a year). Both Guts and Griffith each have a respective dream which they effectively ruin for each other. They both love the same woman. And while they have plenty of connections the contrast is clear as well: Guts resembles the archetypical villain and often acts like it despite being The Hero, whilst Griffith can be seen as the archetypical hero being a literal Knight in Shining Armor but who is ultimately the villain due to his unforgivable actions during the Eclipse.

    • ReBoot: Fourth Season villain Daemon is a Supervirus, appearing as a Mystical Waif styled on Jeanne D'Arc. Unlike her inspiration, however, Daemon has long tendrils (possibly tentacles) that each move independently of the wind (or even each other), almost like the arms of a sea anemone. Given her detached and indifferent sweetness, holy connotations and status as Hive Queen, it gives her otherwise sprite-like appearance a deeply unsettling feel.
    • She-Ra and the Princesses of Power: Arguably invoked by Horde Prime with his prehensile cranial cables, further highlighting his holy and otherworldly aesthetic.

    • At the end of Hollow Knight, if you complete the criteria for the true ending, you find yourself in the arena where you fight the True Final Boss, a platform floating high in the clouds with the sun glowing in the background... but there's nothing there. If you hop up onto a small higher platform, you find a 'Challenge' prompt like the one you used the call out the Mantis Lords earlier in the game, and the Knight turns towards the background, brandishing its nail in challenge. Then the sun sprouts wings and a title fills the entire screen: "THE RADIANCE".

When they're close to completing their transformation, the innkeepers will give them a Prisoner's Last Meal of their favorite food that's been poisoned to give them a Mercy Kill.

    • Broken Aesop: The Dark Is Not Evil and Light Is Not Good message is undermined in the DS Updated Re-release by extra lines in the pre-ending crawl going on and on about evil being defeated by "the light of hope." Ultimately subverted with the Cloud of Darkness, though — it applies only in name (it's really a neutral Omnicidal Maniac whose current tenure just happens to result from the Flood of Darkness this time), and it (or some other incarnation) was a byproduct of the Flood of Light as well.
    • Light Is Not Good: Books in Saronia and a couple of bards in Duster will offer details about the previous "Flood of Light" cataclysm. This entity that the Warriors of the Dark had to fight, comprised of the excess light when the Ancients shifted the balance in light's favor as Xande does with the darkness, was a pure evil being no different from the Cloud of Darkness whose sole objective was to destroy both worlds.

As revealed in the Mag'har Orc recruitment storyline, she now leads a band of draenei, orcs, and ogres collectively known as the Lightbound who seek to convert all the orcs of Draenor to the Light (willingly or not). While her intentions are good, she has become far more ruthless than before. Unsuprisingly, this turn of events was not well-received by her fans.
