    Misuse
  1. Adaptation Decay:
    • The second episode of Cromartie High School opens with Takashi talking about how fans constantly complain about design changes and voice acting whenever a manga is adapted into an anime, and then transforming into a blond, female Moe version of himself. Gender Bender
  2. Bathroom Stall Graffiti:
  3. Be a Whore to Get Your Man:
    • The game Chulip is a weird Gender Flip example. The main character wants to win the literal girl of his dreams over, and to do so, he has to kiss as many townspeople as possible (age, gender, and species indiscriminate) to prove that he's a popular and experienced guy. Gender-Inverted Trope
  4. Compete for the Maiden's Hand:
  5. Does He Have a Brother?: In the description:
    • A common inversion is when the character in the relationship suggests this to her or his friend instead, by mentioning that their date has a brother/sister they can date too. It can also be gender reversed, and if spoken by men about a woman, it's often Those Two Guys saying it. These days it's also likely to be spoken by the Camp Gay in reaction to a straight man he finds attractive. Gender-Inverted Trope
  6. Explaining the Soap: In the description:
    • For example, Alice is enjoying her soap, then Carol comes in to ridicule either Alice or the soap, only for Alice to reply back with a premise or summary that somehow sounds even more ridiculous than what Carol first expected. Gilligan Cut and now both Alice and Carol are hooked in front of the TV. More Gilligan Cuts later and a significant amount of the female cast is now into it. Additional props include tissues, pillow hair, and bathrobes, with the soap viewers discussing who deserves to end with who and commenting how vile and immoral the cliched Big Bad is. For extra funny, make one of them a man. For extra extra funny, make the man the most invested or emotional of them all. possibly Gender-Inverted Trope, definitely not Gender Flip
  7. Fairest of Them All: In the description:
  8. Fantastic Catholicism:
    • In After the End: A Post-Apocalyptic America, Catholicism has experienced a massive surge in the American West, complete with a new Papacy in St. Louis and the revival of the Crusades. There's also two offshoots that refuse to acknowledge his authority as the "true" Pope: The Ursulines of Quebec, who have their own all-female clerical hierarchy, and a Mexican splinter religion that evolved from devotions to the Sacred Heart and the veneration of saints. not sure what this is exactly, but it ain't Gender Flip
  9. Giant Poofy Sleeves:
    • Princess Bubblegum from Adventure Time has these on her 'princess' dresses. Her Gender Flip counterpart Prince Gumball has these too in his suit, and are actually more poofy than Bubblegum's! Spear Counterpart
  10. Gyaru Girl:
  11. Heroes "R" Us:
  12. I Kiss Your Hand:
  13. Joke Character:
    • The Majin class's Gender Flip variant in Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten, the Android, has the same horrible stats and same horrible Evilities. It says something that the fifth installment did not make an elite class in this vein going forward. not an adaptation, not a character
  14. Just the Introduction to the Opposites: In the description:
  15. Leg Cling:
  16. Ma'am Shock:
  17. Making a Splash:
  18. Milestone Celebration:
  19. ComicBook.Alan Ford:
    • Gender Flip example in Minuette and Isolde's marriage: while they're declared wife and wife, Minuette wears a dress and a diadem, while the Baroness wears a full groom's tuxedo, to compliment her slightly-more masculine face. A Gender-Inverted Trope example of Gay Groom in a White Tux.
  20. Fanfic. The Planets: "Den is mistakingly referred to as male. In canon, Den is a female dog." Accidental gender change.
  21. Characters.Daria:
  22. Pater Familicide: The Others (2001) has a Gender Flipped version: a mother, delirious with isolation and worried sick over her husband's fate in World War II, uses a Vorpal Pillow on her children, and then, in remorse, a shotgun on herself. The Twist Ending is that the main characters are this family, and "the others" they've been dealing with are the still-living people who have since moved into the house. Gender-Inverted Trope
  23. Beverly Hills, 90210:
  24. Double Standard: Rape, Sci-Fi: The episode "Season 7, Time for a Wedding!" has a gender-flipped version of the same situation, with Becky basically drugging Sam into falling in love with her. When it starts to wear off on him, she knocks him out, takes his pants off, and ties him to the bed (but insists that she didn't "consummate" their "marriage" yet). It's Played for Laughs and also used to show how much of a loser Becky is... in the exact same season where it is repeatedly implied that he was raped by Lucifer in Hell and is slowly going insane from the memory of it. This show has issues. Gender-Inverted Trope
  25. Characters.Neon Genesis Evangelion NERV Staff: Whether intentional or not, Maya is almost a female version of Shinji appearance-wise; this has carried over to some non-canon NGE works, such as Neon Genesis Evangelion: Campus Apocalypse, and has also fueled WMG that she may be a child of Gendo's from a relationship prior to Yui. Just a character with a resemblance
  26. DeadpanSnarker.Anime And Manga: Kagami Hiiragi from Lucky Star is considered to be the Gender Flip version of Kyon. She makes very cynical and sarcastic comments about Konata's otaku hobbies and her inability to put more focus on her academic studies. Kagami is supposed to be the most rational character of the Four-Girl Ensemble. In the dub, Kagami sounds snarkier and angrier when it comes to these moments. Character comparison from two different works
  27. Distaff Counterpart: Similarly, in the Mazinger Angels manga (a spoof of Charlie's Angels) the main characters are Sayaka, Jun, Hikaru and Maria, piloting Aphrodite A, Venus A, Diana A and Minerva X, respectively. It's like your usual Crossover blending Mazinger Z, Great Mazinger and UFO Robo Grendizer, but Gender Flipped: the male pilots and their robots are nowhere to be seen, and the main characters are the female leads and robots. Incorrect mention
  28. VideoGame.Jet Set Radio: Professor K is essentially a Gender Flip of Lynne Thigpen's unnamed DJ character in The Warriors. Not an adaptation
  29. Characters. The Karate Kid John Kreese: Freudian Excuse: It's scarcely touched on compared to his later experiences, but Kreese obviously had a shitty childhood; no dad in the picture, being poor, the caretaker of his mentally-unstable mother, looked down upon and treated as a freak after his mother's suicide, and saying he's "been in fights his whole life". He never came from anything remotely secure or forgiving and it's not surprising it helped fuel some of his later views, or that the Generation Xerox Gender Flip Tory takes most strongly to what he espouses. Distaff Counterpart character
  30. Freefall.Tropes K To P: Mars Needs Women: Parodied here, when Sawtooth grabs a nonfunctional robot to read its memory during the robot war story arc. Lampshaded and gender flipped by Florence here. Florence: You've seen the covers of the old science fiction magazines. Non-humans always go for humans. It's the price you pay as a species for being drop-dead sexy. Gender-Inverted Trope
  31. Roleplay.Heroes Carnival: Just like Super Hero Taisen and Henshin Heroes before it, a lot of girls get suits previously worn by guys. I don't think this fits any of the Gender-Blending Tropes
  32. Series. The Amazing Extraordinary Friends: HULK MASH!-Up: Atomic Bombshell is a Gender Flipped Hulk expy combined with Nancy Archer, where a blast of nuclear radiation causes Dr. Dominique Brioche Hulking Out into a Giant Woman whenever she gets angry. Expy
  33. Film.Caddyshack: Meta example. The part of Joey was originally written for a boy but transportation captain Hank Scelza suggested his granddaughter, Minerva Scelza for the role because she was a tomboy. Minerva improvised the part where she spins around while trying to carry Al Czervik's bag. Crosscast Role
  34. FollowTheLeader.Anime And Manga: Sailor Moon inspired a deluge of shows based on the Magical Girl Warrior model that it popularized, at the same time that it followed the trail blazed by the same animation studio's earlier Cutey Honey, which both preceded it by nearly two decades. This then came full circle when the final TV series of the original Sailor Moon anime, Sailor Stars, was followed in its time slot by a reboot of Cutey Honey called Cutey Honey F (or Flash), which used many of the same staff and subsequently came to be regarded by many as a Sailor Moon knockoff. In the same vein, Fushigi Yuugi practically set the trend for the genderflipped Harem Genre. It also brought Mikos into the mainstream. Gender-Inverted Trope

    Proper Use
  1. Aloof Big Brother:
    • In Heimatfront, Marco Nitzschmann (a Gender Flip and name-changed version of Maho Nishizumi in Germany near the end of World War II) initially comes off as as somewhat cold toward his younger sister Maria, particularly since he'd rather not have her risk her life on the front lines, where she has no business being.
  2. Awesome Ego:
    • Fate/EXTRA: There's the playable Saber, a.k.a. Emperor Nero. She almost certainly has the biggest ego in the cast and is beloved for it.
  3. Carved Mark:
    • In the infamous The Girl Who Lived series, Rose Potter magically inscribes the words "Potter stinks" into Ron's forehead just because he questioned her relationship with Hermione. (Furthermore, the only reason he is asking is because he is being Locked Out of the Loop.)
  4. Cherry Blossom Girl:
    • Sakura is the most common fan name for Japan's Gender Flipped self in the Japanese Hetalia: Axis Powers fandom, and Himaruya actually listed it as a suggested/potential name for her. The Western fandom also uses it to an extent, albeit not as often as they use Kiku instead.
  5. Dirty Kid:
  6. Early Draft Tie-In: Two wicks on the page, both correct
    • The first Fruits Basket anime accidentally Gender Flipped a major character. Akito was revealed late into the series to have been Raised as the Opposite Gender. The anime, having been produced before the reveal, does not have this twist, so Akito is male presenting as male instead of female presenting as male.
    • The spin-off video game, Uglydolls: An Imperfect Adventure, still has Ice-Bat and Wedgehead as male characters like their original toyline counterparts, while they were swapped to female for the movie.
  7. Extranormal Institute:
  8. I Choose to Stay:
  9. Impossible Hourglass Figure:
  10. Kill and Replace:
    • Lost in Space (2018) revealed that its Gender Flipped version of Dr. Smith is prone to this. How bad is this trait? She isn't even really a case of Gender Flip as her real name is June Harris and she pulled this on the real Zachary Smith, leaving him for dead and assuming his identity. Note that she's not a doppelganger, shapeshifter, identical twin, or any of the other stuff described in the intro. It's just that the other colonists on the planet they crashed on ever actually met the real Dr. Smith, so they have no way of knowing that Dr. Smith couldn't possibly be her.
  11. Light Feminine and Dark Feminine:
  12. Logical Weakness:
    • While zanpakutou are just shy of being outright magic, in The Defeated they still adhere to certain rules of logic. Byakuya is temporarily kept from releasing her bankai because the corridor she's fighting in is too narrow for it to manifest.
  13. Nested Story Reveal:
    • Adventure Time: "Adventure Time with Fionna and Cake" seems to be a pure Gender Flip Alternate Reality Episode, then makes a sudden right-turn at the end to reveal everything was Ice King's fanfiction read to a frozen Finn and Jake. Later "Fionna and Cake" episodes establish that Ice King, Marceline, or some other character are the ones telling the story.
  14. Film.Lantana:
    • Sarah Phelan from Speaking in Tongues becomes Patrick in the film.
  15. Series.Queen Sugar:
    • Charley's son Micah was a daughter in the novel.
  16. Trivia.Go Lion:
    • Hiroshi (aka Pidge) was voiced by Masako Nozawa (yes that one), probably explaining why the version of the character in Voltron: Legendary Defender was GenderFlipped into a Sweet Polly Oliver to make the group Two Girls to a Team rather than The Smurfette Principle.
  17. Sorcery!:
    • Nylock and Valignya from Sorcery! 4 were male in the books but are female here. Additionally many of the Archmage's guards are now female when they appeared to be all male in the original.
  18. Webcomic.Bugged Run:
  19. FandomSpecificPlot.Video Games:
    • For Persona 5, it's common to replace the protagonist with either a Gender Flip or instead to give the Wild Card ability to Makoto Niijima and relegate the original Joker to a supporting character role. With the introduction of Kasumi Yoshizawa in Royal, some fans have started to use her in either role, owing to how Kasumi was initially mistaken as a female Joker (especially with her Phantom Thief attire being designed to complement/contrast with Joker's) and her own character arc in the expanded story.
  20. Trivia. The Mummy 2017: The Mummy was originally going to be male like the traditional depiction, but the original design was apparently too similar to that of the titular villain in X-Men: Apocalypse. This forced them go back to the drawing board, so the crew decided to Gender Flip the Mummy, ironically inviting comparisons to the Enchantress from Suicide Squad instead due to her being an ancient Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette with supernatural powers.
  21. WMG.Batman: Under "The new version of Cassandra Cain is Bruce's biological daughter":
    • Since her old origin wouldn't work, in this she's Bruce's daughter with a new version of Cain, who has undergone a Race Lift and Gender Flip.
  22. WhatCouldHaveBeen.Scoob: Jabberjaw was originally going to appear, and be female.
  23. ViewerGenderConfusion.Anime And Manga:
    • Andromeda Shun has a feminine voice in the Japanese dub, wears pink armor, has a slight figure, and is prettier than most of the female cast. In fact, most of Saint Seiya's Bishōnen are prettier than most of its female cast, and have fooled many unwary viewers. It confused even the French dubbers who had a female voice actress dub Shun's lines in the first few eps, until Ikki calls Shun explicitly his "brother". And later, there is this episode stating that female Saints wear masks, but the confusion's still there. To make matters even more confusing, there was an adaptation where Shun was a girl — Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac. She also happened to be renamed "Shaun" and given Boyish Short Hair, which threw people in for a loop in the opposite direction. Nothing to say except this is funny
  24. Characters.Seventeen Seventy Six: In certain productions (especially school ones), Benjamin Franklin is one of the roles that is most frequently flipped to be played by a female, due to him being the only member of the main three characters who has no wife in the show.
  25. BalloonBelly.Fan Works: It's a Running Gag for Vaccine Womannote  in the One-Punch Man fanfic Hero's Harem that she will end up glutting herself on pollution until her stomach bulges, often to the point where she becomes immobile until she manages to digest some of her titanic meal.
  26. WesternAnimation.Rise Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Casey Jones is a female Foot Clan member rather than a male vigilante.
  27. VideoGame.Nioh 2: Saito Yoshitatsu is your character's twin who got possessed by the Big Bad, meaning they look exactly like your created character. As Yoshitatsu was in fact an actual person, this means he can undergo a Gender Flip if you made a female character.
  28. Literature.Sugar Creek Gang: To add a girl to the cast, the movies take Circus, one of the boys in the gang, and turn him into a tomboyish girl.
  29. Alice Allusion: Lindsey Stirling and ZZ Ward have one song, "Hold My Heart", where Alex falls down a rabbit hole, then goes after the rabbit (played by Lindsey) while ZZ Ward sings as the Red Queen. There is even a tea party and shrinking potion.
  30. Funny.Rifftrax Live Shows: The sole riff relating to the revival series: The Fifth Doctor scoffing at the Master's claim to be helping him for a change is followed up with "Next you'll be saying one day I'll be played by a woman!"note
  31. Recap.Black Lightning 2018 S 3 E 7 Hendersons Opus: Erica Moran is a Gender Flip of Eric Moran, a member of the Outsiders from the comics with the exact same powers.
  32. Distaff Counterpart:
  33. Characters.Maji De Watashi Ni Koi Shinasai The Kuki Corporation: She says not to let her different gender affect one's perceptions of the hero Yoshitsune as one of her first lines. In-Universe Gender Flip
  34. Characters.Arrowverse National City Criminals: Adaptation Name Change: Due to the Gender Flip, the character's first name is "Jacqueline" instead of "Jack".
  35. Characters.Jem And The Holograms IDW: Bait-and-Switch: When introduced it looked like the comics had made Eric into a woman and Race Lifted him until it was revealed otherwise. Skin color notwithstanding, she looks (and acts) so much like animated-Eric in issue #19 that you understand the reason for giving Eric glasses in this continuity is to differentiate them. Subverted Trope
  36. Film.K Pax: Dr. Klaus Villars, a white, bearded, German-accented, classically Freud-reminiscent psychiatrist in the novel becomes Dr. Claudia Villars, a female black American in the film.
  37. Characters.Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Rangers: Under Trini Kwan:
    • Both her Sentai counterparts were male. Low context, but referring to Super Sentai, most likely
  38. Fanfic.Winter Thorns Of Highgarden: Here, Jon Snow was born Lyarra Snow. Ghost also is female.
  39. Recap. The Flash 2014 S 3 E 4 The New Rogues: The Top was a guy named Roscoe Dillion in the comics. Here, she's Rosa Dillion.
  40. Webcomic.A Tale Of Two Rulers: While it appears at first that Link is nowhere to be seen, she has been around the whole time, this time reincarnated as Princess Rinku. This trope is likely true for Ganondorf and Zelda in at least one reincarnation cycle each. Ganondorf explains to Zelda that he was once a mother in a previous life. And while it’s yet to be seen in-comic, Fig did post a picture of Zelda as a man. Ambiguous in some cases, but definitively established in others
  41. Fanfic.Naked Singularity: Rainbow Dash's fictional counterpart, Prism Slash, is male.
  42. Film.Mowgli: Like Disney's remake, Kaa is a female.
  43. WebAnimation.Dark Secrets Of Garrys Mod: P-Body is portrayed as male instead of female.
  44. AdaptationNameChange.Live Action Films: All the Troubles of the World: Ali Othrnan's character is Gender Flipped and renamed Barbara Hammond.
  45. Characters.Rise Of The Save Ums: Foo was female in the original series.
  46. Characters.Superman The Animated Series Alien Antagonists: Mala was a male in the comic.
  47. ShoutOut.The Amazing World Of Gumball: Gumball making people angry by revealing that many characters were made female in the new movie is a Take That! to people angry at the fact that the protagonist of the new trilogy, Rey, is female. Show Within a Show example
  48. Characters.Castle Rock: Of Gordie LaChance from 'The Body''. Example is about Georgia "Chance" LaChance
  49. Fanfic.Recursion: Sort of; Frisk and Chara are both solidly identified as male and female, respectively, instead of genderless/gender-neutral. Napstablook and the Mad Dummy (Furlablook) are still identified as gender-neutral, namely with the "they" pronoun. From non-binary to a binary gender
  50. Characters.Metropolis 2001: The main robot of the original manga was technically able to be either male or female with the flip of a switch on their neck but spends most of the story as a boy, whereas Tima is 100% female. From Sex Shifter to female, it seems
  51. Characters.Homeward Bound The Incredible Journey: The character Sassy is based on is male in the original novel.

    Other/Uncertain
  1. God-Created Canon Foreigner:
    • Warcraft: The most extreme example is perhaps Alodi, introduced in the manga as the very first Guardian, he wasn't even mentioned in World of Warcraft until he got an Artifact named after him in Legion, and he (or rather she) was the one who reveals that Medivh brought the orcs into Azeroth. not familiar enough with this to say for sure. could be proper use, could be Samus Is a Girl.
  2. Characters.Fate Oath Alternative: A ZCE, trope-name-only example.
  3. Roleplay.Quest Of Fate:
    • Lancer's identity is Yamato Takeru who despite being a woman was made to live as a man after she killed her brother and became the new 'Prince'. Unsure if this is the character being gender-flipped in the story, or if they were just forced to live as the opposite gender.
  4. RippedFromTheHeadlines.Criminal Minds: 2x18 "Jones" — combines by way of Gender Flip the crimes of Jack the Ripper and Aileen Wuornos Needs more context
  5. Recap. The Emiya Clan Devils Wings: Flip-flopped - there is no Einhart, only Claus Ingvalt XVIII. I have no idea what this means.
  6. Literature.Bag Of Bones: Adaptation Deviation: In the miniseries after Sara Tidwell's daughter Kyra is murdered she curses her murderers to murder their daughters instead of just their children. Just a pothole, zero context
  7. Manga.Choco Mimi: Vols. 5 and 6 end with stories with all the characters gender-flipped. (Unfortunately, the Punny Names no longer work.) Insufficient context
  8. YMMV.Heckle And Jeckle: It gets even more complicated knowing their prototype versions in "The Talking Magpies" were a married couple with at least one of them having a Gender Flip afterwards. No context
  9. Trivia.Red Vs Blue: Doubled with Casting Gag; In "Get Bent" (the Season 14 episode where Church, Tex, and all of Red Team are Gender Flipped), the female Sarge is voiced by Anna Hullum (Matt Hullum's wife) and Lopez and Church both get the voice of Ashley Jenkins (Burnie Burns' wife). Not enough context (What, if anything, happens in this episode to justify the gender change?)
  10. TheMole.Fan Works: In the Peggy Sue fic, Rise of a New Moon, Luna manages to turn Jeremiah, Viletta, Euphie and Suzaku to her side and use them to wage a bloodless campaign to take over Japan. Pothole from a character name with no context
