Zenoiran Empire

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zenoira_blank.png
The Empire forged by Galerius's conquest of Fevrith. It takes its name from an ancient advanced civilization that has long passed into the realm of legend.
    open/close all folders

    In General
  • Abusive Precursors: The original Zenorians were not nice people. And still aren't, what with trying to conquer the living to rebuild their civilization, though most turn out to be desperate rather than evil.
  • And Man Grew Proud: The original Zenoiran Empire attempted to claim immortality by killing the Unicorn. In turn, the Unicorn destroyed the empire and cursed their souls to wander the earth for all eternity..
  • Barred from the Afterlife: The Unicorn's Curse keeps Zenoiran souls in the beyond, unable to fully pass on. Alain lifts the curse in the ending.
  • Clothes Make the Superman: The sets of black armor worn by the Dark Marquesses are implied to bestow power in and of themselves given Berengaria went out of her way to steal a set and Nigel wears it despite it clashing aesthetically with the heavenly white most of Albion's clergy wears.
  • The Empire: A textbook example - an all-encompassing empire that subdues all to its command and serves as the main foe of the Liberation.
  • Ghost Invasion: In present time, Zenoirans (or at least their elites) are ghosts invading the living world via posession, and their ultimate goal is to return all their citizens to Fevrith with this method.
  • Gone Horribly Right: In a bid to obtain immortality, the empire tried to kill the mythical Unicorn. In retaliation, the Unicorn cursed them to be forever Barred from the Afterlife; they became "immortal" in a sense, but they're now doomed to wander the earth as spirits.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Alain convinces the Zenoiran souls to turn on Baltro, sapping him from his power and his ability to avoid death, before lifting the Unicorn's curse so they can pass on.
  • Invading Refugees: The Zenoirans originally hailed from another continent that was devastated by a civil war brought on by a succession crisis. Galerius would end up leading the survivors of that conflict to Fevrith in order to establish a new empire.
  • Look on My Works, Ye Mighty, and Despair: Ancient Zenoiran ruins dot the land and seas of Fevrith, with the exception of Elheim - for all their might, even then the Winding Wood proved to be too much.
  • The Necrocracy: Type 3 - the Zenoirans are actually the ghosts the old Zenoirans afflicted by the Unicorn's curse and seeking to subjugate the living to rebuild their civilization.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Zenoira is the greatest power in Fevrith, with the nations under the empire's control being colored purple and marked with its purple heraldry.
Lex: Lot more purple than I'm happy seeing.
  • Slavery Is a Special Kind of Evil: Zenoira is heavily associated with domination and imperialism. The idea of a spell to enslave another's will was unheard of before the main plotline revealed it. Slavery is never mentioned to have existed in a non-criminal context before Zenoira took over Fevrith. Every non-criminal associated with the slave trade is part of Zenoira's power structure, and several slaving criminals were welcomed into the ranks of Zenoira's army. This has a Fantastic Racism dimension; slavery of elves and bestrals is most prominent among the national plotlines. And their final plan involves the metaphorical slavery of mass-possessing the inhabitants of Fevrith, stealing their bodies to live forever.
  • Villainous Legacy: Galerius claims his new continental state is a revival of an ancient, technologically and magically advanced empire that mysteriously collapsed. They killed the mythical Unicorn at the height of their glory to obtain immortality, only for the Unicorn's curse to wipe them out in an instant and prevent their souls from passing on. Subverted, as these are, in fact, those same Zenoirans, attempting to reclaim their old power.
  • You Rebel Scum!: They always refer the Liberation Army as rebels. "Rebel scum" does indeed pop out here and there.

Ruling Class

    Galerius
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/galerius.png
Voiced By: Tesshō Genda (JP), Luis Bermudez (EN)
Class: Dark Lord → Overlord
Once a renowned Cornian general by the name of Valmore. After leading a successful rebellion against the Cornian family, he proclaimed himself Emperor Galerius of the reborn Zenoiran Empire and claimed all of the Fevrith as his own.
  • Artifact of Doom: The armor is the medium by which Galerius possesses his hosts.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: The game opens up with him having accomplished what he set out to do. The former general's coup succeeded and swiftly took control of the entire world within a decade, restoring the Zenoiran Empire to its former glory. That said, it's implied that Galerius hasn't completed all his objectives just yet. The main plot of the game is to undo his hard work before dealing with Galerius himself. If you opt to execute Galerius in the final story mission (without unbinding the Ring of the Unicorn beforehand), Galerius' soul possesses Alain, just as he did with Queen Illenia when she killed Valmore. Unlike last time, Galerius succeeds and establishes an eternal Zenoiran Empire.
  • Big Bad: The game's central villain. He's responsible for everything that happens in the game, including brainwashing countless people to do his bidding.
  • Body Surf: The true Galerius has been dead for centuries, and exists as a spirit, possessing bodies. Valmore was his first victim. When Ilenia slew him, she became his new vessel. Alain himself will fall victim to this if he chooses to execute Galerius.
  • Came Back Strong: At the end of "The Priestess, Abducted" Alain strikes Galerius down to rescue Scarlett, but Baltro revives Galerius by undoing the seals at the temple the fight takes place in. It also makes him even stronger, as he nearly kills Alain in a single strike. This is also the reason that he doesn’t possess Alain and remains in his current body, as he otherwise cannot unlock his full power in the final battle or open the Gate to bring all his people back en masse.
  • Dead All Along: Ilenia actually defeated Valmore, but found herself possessed by Galerius. In a roundabout sense, Galerius himself, as he's a ghost.
  • Demonic Possession: The true nature of his "brainwashing". Rather than warp his target's mind to make them more subservient, Galerius corrupts them with a foreign soul. It later turns out Valmore himself was subjected to this, as Galerius' spirit inhabited his family's ancestral armor and took him over when Valmore inherited it. Queen Illenia fell victim to this when she killed Valmore, and Alain can potentially become his new vessel if he executes Galerius after defeating him in the final story mission. And if Alain hasn't unbound the Ring of the Unicorn beforehand, the possession is permanent.
  • The Emperor: Of the reborn Zenoiran Empire.
  • Entitled Bastard: While he is motivated by a desire to bring salvation to his people, Galerius also just feels entitled to rule over Fevrith. Alain calls Galerius out on this in their final confrontation, saying that he's proven himself totally unworthy of sovereignty through all the senseless destruction he's wrought. It was with this same attitude of entitlement that Galerius first came to conquer Fevrith in ancient times and led to his entire empire's ruin through his own greed for immortality.
  • Evil Overlooker: He looms over Alain and his comrades on the box art.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Previously, Galerius was a decorated and renowned Cornian general before launching a bloody coup against the royal family and restore a fallen empire to its former glory. In reality, Valmore was possessed by the soul of the Zenorian Emperor Galerius, via Galerius' armor that was passed down into Valmore's family. He was only a vessel and never actually turned on Ilenia.
  • Final Boss Preview: He's actually fought twice, once in opening with Queen Ilenia and once in "The Priestess, Abducted," before the final battle.
  • Gold-Colored Superiority: After rebranding himself as Galerius, he changes his dark colored armor for a gold-colored one. He's one of the toughest enemies in the game, as is to be expected of the Big Bad.
  • HP to 1: One of his skills allows to reduce all your units HP to 1 at the end of combat with him, making him difficult to fight with the same units unless healed beforehand or stripped of his action points so he can't go on to use other skills.
  • Last-Second Villain Recovery: As Alain tries to purify Galerius and the Zenorian souls of their Curse, Galerius arises with unholy fervor to knock him, the Maiden, and Josef away. He then attacks them as he refuses to be denied of resurrecting the Zenorian Empire and leave his people's souls to remain trapped in the Beyond, until Baltro betrays him.
  • A Lighter Shade of Black: Galerius seeks to revive his own people, giving at least a noble goal to the atrocities he commits. Baltro, meanwhile, merely wants the souls of the dead as fuel for his own magic.
  • Lightning Bruiser: When fought at the end of "The Priestess, Abducted", Galerius is a fast, tanky, and strong unit who not only can debuff your party, but hit almost every unit you have, even Fragile Speedster units. His only drawback is that he only attacks once, else he'd be almost impossible to defeat.
  • Meaningful Name: "Galerius" refers to Roman Emperor Gaius Galerius Valerius Maximianus, who was infamous for his persecution of Christians.
  • Meaningful Rename: He changed his name from Valmore to Galerius after his successful coup of Fevrith. However, it turns out that Galerius isn't just a new name, but rather his actual name. In addition, at the time that he begins using the name Galerius, he is possessing Ilenia as his new vessel, as she killed Valmore.
  • No Body Left Behind: When Ilenia slays Valmore, his body disappears and Ilenia assumes it as some sorcery. Galerius reveals the inhuman nature of his soul to her, then Baltro snares her so that Galerius can possess her.
  • Orcus on His Throne: Galerius spends most of the game relaxing in his seat of power in Gran Corrine, not lifting a finger to break out even as the player liberates the rest of Cornia and then Fevrith. Semi-justified with The Reveal that Galerius's endgame is allowing the souls of his people to mass-possess the living inhabitants of Fevrith, so once he has what he needs he doesn't have to care too much about how much territory he loses in the meantime.
  • Redemption Rejection: When Alain attempts to emancipate Galerius's soul from the Unicorn's curse, the emperor furiously attacks him for it. He's only stopped from continuing the fight against Alain due to Baltro betraying him.
  • Strike Me Down with All of Your Hatred!: Defeated in Gran Corrine, Galerius dares Alain to finish him. If Alain complies to Galerius's taunt, Galerius quickly possesses Alain after his mortal vessel, Ilenia, is slain. If Alain learn the truth about the ancient Zenorian Empire from the Great Sages, he defies this by revealing that he knows the true nature of the Zenorians, much to Galerius's surprise.
  • That Man Is Dead: Galerius answers to no name but Galerius. Subverted; as it turns out, Galerius is not an alias, but the possessing spirit's birth name.
  • Tin Tyrant: Galerius is clad head to toes in black and red armor. It also helps hide who he is currently possessing.
  • Walking Spoiler: The fact that Galerius is not Valmore assuming a new name for himself, but an ancient ghost possessing first Valmore and then Illenia through a haunted suit of armor, is not only a huge reveal in and of itself but reveals the "new" Zenoiran Empire is actually the ghosts of the old one mass-possessing the living.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Has some serious holes in Contractual Boss Immunity. Namely he can be stunned. This proves to be a fatal weakness if you attack him with Rosalinde because if she’s faster than him, she can prevent him from using his start of battle barrier ability with Rage of the Fairies. He can also be frozen, making the ability Ice Conferal a massive thorn in his side.

    Baltro
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/baltro.png
Voiced By: Hiroshi Naka (JP), Frank Todaro (EN)
Class: Necromancer
A wizened wizard who serves Galerius. Versed in all manner of dark spells and curses. His face remains obscured behind his hood, and none have seen the visage beneath.
  • The Dragon: He's Galerius' most trusted servant.
  • Dragon Ascendant: If Galerius is defeated but not killed, he absorbs his soul and those Galerius was using, as was always his plan.
  • Dragon with an Agenda: He backstabs Galerius, revealing his goal was not resurrecting the Zenoiran dead as Galerius planned, but to consume them as fuel for his magic.
  • Evil Genius: He's Galerius right hand strategist and wizard, assisting him in all his plans to achieve world domination. Galerius trusts his skills enough to willingly fight the Liberation Army to the death so that Baltro can ensure he can return stronger. Even his former disciples, who don't have much nice to say about him, admit that for all his faults Baltro is probably the mightiest and most brilliant sorcerer who ever lived.
  • Evil Mentor: The sages were his disciples, it is why they know so much about his magic and Zenoira's fate.
  • Evil Old Folks: He's thousands of years old and is one of the most despicable characters in the game.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Although Galerius is the prominent threat in Fevrith, Baltro himself is ultimately the one pulling the strings, using his dark magic to aid Galerius under the guise of restoring the old Zenoira Empire to its former glory. In reality, he's using Galerius to open the gateway to the Beyond and use all the dead Zenoiran souls to further bolster his magic prowess. He's also the one who killed the Unicorn and caused the ancient Zenorians to be wiped out by its curse.
  • Hate Sink: There isn't a shred of good in Baltro, and he commits atrocity after atrocity throughout the game. And he's been doing it for centuries. By the time he is finally defeated once and for all, no one has a shred of pity for him.
  • The Heavy: After the initial story arc in Cornia, Baltro’s presence or influence is directly shown in the other countries. In Drakenhold, he’s already tricked Gloucester (and through him Magellan), making them thralls of Zenoira when the Liberation Army arrives; he also later abducts Berengaria, making her the leader of Zenoira’s forces in Castle Soldraga. In Elheim, he moves against the Army directly by reanimating the dead, and taught Alcina how to use the possession spell while still alive. In Bastorias, while not seen it’s revealed that he offered the wererats the power to rule Bastorias, performing deadly experiments on them that only Elgor survived. And in Albion, he’s the one who turned the deceased Pontifex Arant’s body into a puppet, tricking Sanatio into believing it’s the only way to keep stability while Zenoira seeks to kill Arant’s heir, Scarlet with Albion none the wiser. Between all this are his actions in the distant past, making him the antagonist most involved in the story.
  • In the Hood: Baltro is only shown with the bottom half of his bearded chin visible.
  • Karma Houdini: In the normal ending, the game ends with Galerius defeated and the rite of channeling disrupted. However, Baltro is unaccounted for and will likely resurface again to cause destruction in Fevrith, especially since the Zenoiran souls remain cursed.
  • Lich: As he dies, we see his face is actually a skull. He's also impossible to kill unless the killing blow is inflicted using the Unicorn's Magic via Alain's "Astral Blade" skill.
  • The Man in Front of the Man: He's manipulating Galerius to open the gates of the beyond, but he doesn't intend to bring back the Zenoiran as Galerius plans, and backstabs him at the first opportunity.
  • Medium Blending: His ultimate attack, Unicorn's Wrath, opens a portal from which a polygonal unicorn head composed of skeletons unlike anything else in the game reaches out to strike the party. It looks especially jarring given it attacks your party of 2-D sprite based characters, almost as if something from another dimension is breaching the game's reality.
  • Mystical Plague: The battle in Ghislain's territory has him gloat that he's the source of the plague that's been spreading throughout Fevrith.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Seizing Galerius's soul releases Ilenia from his possession without hurting her. She makes a full recovery in the true ending because of this.
  • This Cannot Be!: Says as much when Alain turns the souls of the Zenoirans on him, reversing the power of the sigil and robbing Baltro of his power. He's reduced to screaming in rage and agony as he's reduced to dust and the Zenoirans pass onto the afterlife.
  • True Final Boss: After Galerius' defeat, he reveals himself as this if Alain chooses to spare and convince Galerius to stand down, becoming the last major boss of the main story. He remains a threat in the post-game story mission as well.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Has the same vulnerability to Rage of the Fairies stun effect Galerius does, as does his entire squad. His entire squad can also be frozen should you bring ice conferall and use it on an aoe attack.
  • When All You Have Is a Hammer…: In the True Final Boss, he forgoes all of his skills that he utilized in his boss fight at Elheim for one singular skill, Unicorn's Wrath. It deals damage to your entire party with a 999 magickal potency that is unguardable and uncoverable, effectively capable of wiping out your entire unit, unless the recipient of the Ring of the Maiden uses the passive skill, Celestial Light, to No-Sell it.

    Norbelle (UNMARKED SPOILERS
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/norbelleuo.png
Voiced By: Hina Suguta (JP), Skyler Davenport (EN)
Class: High Priestess
High priestess of the Zenoiran church and the daughter of Galerius from ancient times, Norbelle is given Scarlett's Empty Shell to use as a host body should the the latter go unrescued.
  • Contractual Boss Immunity: Immune to Blindness, Deathblow and Passive Seal thanks to her Talisman of the Abyss.
  • Evil Costume Switch: Her Base Color is crimson and her first Accent Color is red to Scarlett's red and white, respectively. This change is especially visible on her sweater.
  • Good Powers, Bad People: Has all of Scarlett's holy abilities but none of her compassion and empathy.
  • Life Drain: Her Sanguine Rain attack (courtesy of her Sanguis Mea staff and empowered by Bloodstained Ribbon) drains HP from all enemies.
  • Route Boss: She only appears if the player tries to take on the main quest "Unicorn Overlord" without first completing "The Priestess, Abducted".
  • Secret Character: Sort of. Given she and Scarlett use the same promoted class and sprite, Patch 1.04 makes it possible to "play" as Norbelle by way of the Idealist's Handmirror. If she's defeated and added to your class registery at any time, you can use an Idealist's Handmirror on Scarlett to change her voice to Norbelle's, at least outside cutscenes and story events, even on files where you never abandoned Scarlett to her fate. This also changes her status screen portrait.
  • Walking Spoiler: Norbelle is impossible to discuss in any detail without spoiling what fate befalls Scarlett should the player decide not to rescue her. Additionally, reading her entry in the Fevrith Archive strongly hints at the true nature of Baltro's spell of control hours before the player would normally hear the truth from Alcina, which in turn strongly hints at the true nature of Galerius and the Zenoiran Empire.
  • Would You Like to Hear How They Died?: She takes delight in taunting Alain on how his abandonment of Scarlett in favor of retaking Grand Corine resulted in her becoming an Empty Shell.

Other Notable Figures

    Baltro's Apprentices (UNMARKED SPOILERS

Drakenhold Sage voiced by: Miki Natsutani (JP), Shara Kirby (EN)
Elheim Sage voiced by: Haruka Sato (JP), Laura Post (EN)
Bastorias Sage voiced: Ryo Sugisaki (JP), Kirk Allen (EN)
Albion Sage voiced: Takahiro Yoshino (JP), SungWon Cho (EN)
Zenoira Sage voiced by: Yuuki Tamai (JP), Patrick Seitz (EN)

The Great Sages were once the six disciples of Baltro. Now disembodied alongside the rest of their kin and seeing their Evil Mentor for the wretched being he is, they offer wisdom and aid to the Liberation with the ultimate aim of breaking the curse upon their people.

  • Admiring the Abomination: Downplayed. The sage of Drakenhold Sanctuary will comment that Baltro, in spite of his Jerkass nature and lack of basic morals, is a genius and likely the greatest sorcerer that ever lived.
  • Big Good: A collective one; they can’t intervene directly for the most part, but provide aid to the Liberation Army. They also set up the means of countering Galerius and Baltro centuries ago for the hero that would finally break the curse for good.
  • Mr. Exposition: The interactions with them after unlocking the power of the Rings also have the characters ask questions which the Sages oblige to answer, like how exactly ancient Zenoira met its doom, the true nature of Bastorias Blue and so on.
  • Sealed Good in a Can: Each of them was sealed in one of six shrines built across Fevrith to house the Barred from the Afterlife souls of their people. One is located in each nation, save Cornia which has two: one near the old Zenoira capital, and one in the heart of the kingdom.
  • Token Heroic Orc: All other ancient Zenoirans that we see remain fixated on retaking control of Fevrith; the Sages however recognise their people’s folly and (alongside one Sole Survivor) opposed the Immortality Seeker aspirations that ruined ancient Zenoira.
  • Two Girls to a Team: The sages of Drakenhold & Elheim are women, the other four are men.

    The Four Retainers (UNMARKED SPOILERS
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/the_four_retainers_uo.jpg
Narcesse voiced by: Yuuri Sakamoto (JP), Christie Cate (EN)
Holonius voiced by: Shitan En (JP), Phillip Reich (EN)
Theodora voiced by: Naoko Komatsu (JP), Brittany Cox (EN)
Belisarios voiced by: Yuuki Tamai (JP)
Class: Dark Marquess

The most powerful servants in Galerius' employ, granted suits of Ancient Zenoiran Armor, they are summoned back to Fevrith to heed the call of their master during the final stages of his devious plan.

  • Bad Boss: Holonius, to prove his might, burns down his own allies when approached by the Liberation, much to Alain's shock.
  • Barrier Maiden: The Liberation must first defeat them before entering Gran Corrine, as they power the miasma that covered the capital.
  • Blood Knight: Theodora devoted herself to the pursuit of endless martial prowess and achievement in life. It's implied she's possessing Berengaria in the climax of the Drakenhold questline and in "Unicorn Overlord;" Berengaria's personality in that route fits her well.
  • Death Is Cheap: Belisarios takes his loss in stride, since as Galerius about to break the barrier on the Beyond, he'll just come back in a new body before long.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Holonius is mentioned in the Fevrith Archive's entry on the Phantom Army, the foes of the Sigil's Trials, which were patterned after his army.
  • Evil Counterpart: Gameplay-wise, Holonius to Nigel and Theodora to Berengaria. More of a case of "evil-er counterparts" with Narcesse and Belisarios in regards to Alcina and Elgor, respectively.
  • Last Episode, New Character: They only appear in the final story mission, "Unicorn Overlord".

Encountered in Cornia

    Auch
Voiced By: Takuma Nagatsuka (JP), Daman Mills (EN)
Class: Wizard → Warlock
A Zenoiran mage seeking valuable ancient artifacts to please his Mother and show-up his sibling. Upon defeat, he can be recruited, which he takes as a great opportunity to prove himself to his family.
  • Anti-Villain: He’s only trying to achieve some kind of success so as to feel his life has meaning, and just happens to work for Zenoira.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: He starts out as the boss of his sidequest, but upon his defeat, Alain can convince him to join the Liberation.
  • Desperately Craves Affection: As a result of his mother’s neglect.
  • Dub Name Change: The German version changes his name to Auche.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Despite seeming ill-tempered and obsessive of his task, if he’s to be executed he merely asks Alain to spare his underlings the same punishment.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Aside some Mirthless Laughter, he doesn’t protest his death at Alain’s hand. In fact, he’s more shocked if recruited.
  • Good Feels Good: Being part of an environment seeking a noble cause brings out the best in Auch.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Offered the chance to join the Liberation, he’s initially taken aback that anyone might consider him useful but gladly sees it as a goal worth joining.
  • Parental Favoritism: His sibling would take all of their Mother's attention, which made Auch desperate for any sign of acknowledgement.
  • Meaningful Name: His name is German for "too" or "as well", referencing his nature as The Un-Favourite who too wants his mother's acknowledgement.
  • Optional Party Member: After his defeat, Alain can choose to execute him instead of recruit him.
  • Talking to the Dead: In his epilogue, he recites a list of his accomplishments to his mother's tombstone before leaving for parts unknown, finally leaving her in his past.
  • Together in Death: If you execute him, his comments about reuniting with his mother “sooner” than he expected reveal that she’s long dead.
  • The Un-Favourite: By his word, he was neglected in favor of his much more talented sibling.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Never getting his mother’s approval has seriously damaged his self-esteem, and the fact she died before he ever could has only exacerbated his neuroses.

    Beaumont
Voiced By: Kentaro Tone (JP), Dave B. Mitchell (EN)
Class: Hoplite → Legionneire
An officer in the Zenoiran Army tasked with capturing the witches' swamp in southwest Cornia. Once a local Cornian lord, he swiftly pledged fealty to Galerius in order to retain his territory and save his own skin.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: He’s loud and exceedingly boisterous, but he still did a lot of harm at the Witches’ Swamp and almost succeeded in trafficking Bestral children.
  • Easily Forgiven: His punishment for his crimes in Bastorias is surprisingly light given that he was trafficking bestral children to be used as slaves. He's simply forced to work in Mutsin's orphanage.
  • Egopolis: Upon making a new identity, he refers to himself as "King" Gordon, and his trafficking business as the Kingdom of Gordonia.
  • Hazy-Feel Turn: He’s consigned to protection of the orphanage he tried to exploit, and he seems somewhat better… although it’s still clear that Batiste’s disapproval is helping to keep him in line, so he’s far from fully reformed yet.
  • Minion with an F in Evil: His servant, Batiste, is one. While he's very loyal to Beaumont, he lacks the nerve to commit the kinds of atrocities he does. Ultimately he's the one who convinces Beaumont to surrender with some dignity when he's finally defeated in Bastorias.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: In his introduction, Beaumont is a foppish loser who's thoroughly outmaneuvered in the swamps of Cornia before cutting and running. His later appearances prove that silly doesn't mean harmless.
  • The Quisling: A Cornian collaborator, but of his own free will and for his own personal gain rather than any concern for something higher.
  • Secret Character: Joins only after completing the post-game mission, "Dying Breath of an Empire Fallen".
  • Shoot the Hostage Taker: On the receiving end of this, though non-lethally. When he tries to take Lou's father Mutsin hostage to get Alain to back off, Yahna teleports behind Beaumont and freezes him.
  • Slavery Is a Special Kind of Evil: Long after first encountering him, he reappears under the name "King" Gordon in Bastorias, having made a new identity after his failure, now a supposed merchant and orphanage manager that is actually enslaving the bestral children in his care and shipping them to Zenoira for labor and amusement.
  • Would Hurt a Child: In addition to trafficking young bestral orphans into slavery, he hires mercenaries that are very willing to kill Lou for trying to learn the truth about how he is running the local orphanage.

    Gaston
Voiced By: Masafumi Kobatake (JP), Joe Hernandez (EN)
Class: Knight
A local Cornian lord aligned with Zenoira. His childhood brought him great suffering and hunger, leading him to become obsessed with food. After Valmore's rebellion, he was given land and a title in exchange for aiding Zenoira.
  • One-Track-Minded Hunger: Every cutscene featuring Gaston, he mentions feeling hunger, needing to eat, or a desire to find food.
  • Pet the Dog: While some Order of the Blue knights are willing to turn on him if Adel approaches them, others claim that Gaston has actually done well by, and cared for, their families. This refusal demonstrates he’s shown a degree of care for at least some of his vassals.
  • The Tell: For a man who is obsessed with eating, Gaston doesn't have an Acrofatic physique. This is the first clue that his hunger is psychological, and the cruelty Adel speaks of is actually creating a stockpile of grain for the peasants so they will not starve to death from the upheaval caused by the war between Liberation Army and the Empire.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: From his perspective, all his actions have been to ensure his territory doesn’t starve when the “inevitable famine” strikes.

    Ghislain
Voiced By: Kazuki Kyan (JP), Eliah Mountjoy (EN)
Class: Knight
A Cornian lord whose wife died to a Mystical Plague, leading him to align with Zenoira and undertake risky experiments in search of a cure.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Unlike Tatiana who can tell Baltro is a scumbag, Ghislain trusts him unquestioningly. Which unfortunately for him, leads to his death as he’s convinced the Liberation are a threat to him and his work (technically they can agree to allow the treatment to be completed after all).
  • Mad Scientist: While he is indeed making progress in creating a cure, he is willing to fight against the Liberation Army to use their corpses for research, and the towns in his territory would prefer it ended after his death than a cure attained.
  • Together in Death: His dying words are gratitude that at least he will be reunited with his wife in the afterlife.
  • Tragic Villain: He’s only an enemy because of a situation borne of desperation, and has also suffered personally from the very situation he’s taking extreme measures to stop.
  • Trick Boss: The encounter with him doesn't end with his death; Tatiana raises her own forces to try and avenge him after he falls.
  • Unwitting Pawn: To Baltro, who created the Mystical Plague in their territory and then manipulated Ghislain under the guise of helping them cure it.
  • Villain Has a Point: While his use of plague victim corpses seems uncouth, it's a perfectly logical method to find the cure for the plague to prevent future outbreaks.

    Renault
Voiced By: Isamu Yusen (JP), John Patneaude (EN)
Class: Knight → Great Knight
A Zenoiran knight formerly loyal to Cornia's throne. He is well-acquainted with Josef and Hodrick, and is renowned as both a powerful leader and inspiring commander. He fought alongside Ilenia during Valmore's rebellion.
  • Arc Villain: His kidnapping of Scarlett kickstarts the first main quest of the game.
  • The Atoner: As Laurent, he fight the empire to atone for serving them for 10 years.
  • I Have You Now, My Pretty: Subverted. While Renault is the one who kidnaps Scarlett, he treats her as a valuable prisoner of the Emperor to be protected. This is in stark contrast to Hodrick's troops who found her earlier.
  • Knight Errant: As Laurent, he wanders across Fevrith fighting the empire, even aiding the Liberation Army in liberating occupied towns and forts.
  • Last Stand: Renault is present in Queen Ilenia's desperate defense against Galerius in the prologue.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: He's horrified when he's freed by the ring of what he did for 10 years. Enough for him to declare Renault is dead, and take a new identity as a knight errant to atone himself.
  • Optional Party Member: In order to recruit him, you must partake in at least four Liberation quests in Cornia or Drakenhold after completing the "The Priestess, Abducted" main quest. In those liberation quests, a mysterious knight-errant named "Laurent" will appear to come to your aid. After completing the quests, Laurent will reveal himself as Renault and joins the Liberation Army.
  • Redemption Demotion: Inverted, he starts as a Great Knight when he stood by Queen Ilenia's side in the prologue, only to demote to a Knight when he leads the Zenoirans. When he joins the Liberation Army, he returns to being a Great Knight.
  • Significant Anagram: His new identity, "Laurent" is an anagram of Renault.
  • That Man Is Dead: After regaining his senses from Galerius's control, he became so ashamed of his actions that he shed his old name and became a knight-errant named Laurent. At first, he denies Clive's claim and say that Renault "died" ten years ago, but after realizing that he cannot bring peace to Fevrith alone, he joins the Liberation Army with his old name.

Encountered in Drakenhold

    Anton
Voiced By: Kazuki Kyan (JP), Doug Erholtz (EN)
Class: Vanguard
A commander of the Zenoiran occupation in Drakenhold, who leads an assault on Prince Gilbert’s stronghold.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: He grows increasingly livid the longer his forces are repelled.
  • Optional Boss: Defeating him is optional, as he’ll also retreat if enough of his forces are defeated; in-story dialogue even notes when the player is steadily closer to accomplishing this.

    Berengaria
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/berengaria.png
Voiced By: Asami Seto (JP), Stephanie Kerbis (EN)
Class: Dark Marquess (Axe)

Travis' sister, who once led their mercenary company before dissolving it because she had higher aspirations. She became one of the Empire's great generals, until she turned on them, sickened by their evil.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Her brother calls her "Ren."
  • Arc Villain: After the battle at Baumratte, she’s abducted by Baltro and becomes possessed, thus becoming the commanding general in the final stretch of Drakenhold.
  • Blood Knight: While she's usually pretty calm and stoic, treating war and battle as a means to an end, while serving as the final boss of Drakenhold, and implicitly the host of Theodora the Berserker, she relishes the battle and outright says she's glad her enemies are coming to her.
  • Blue Blood: Gilbert eventually recognizes her as the daughter of Count Zechshelm, a close friend of the late king Hugo who died during the invasion.
  • Book Ends: The first story quest in Drakenhold is saving her from a slated execution. The final story quest has her, kidnapped and mind controlled/possessed, as the final boss.
  • Break His Heart to Save Him: She told Travis he was a weakling and held her back, so he'd not follow her when she joined the empire, with the purpose to gain a powerful armor to use against them to avenge their family.
  • Climax Boss: The final boss of the Drakenhold segment of the game as she's hit by Baltro's possession magic.
  • Combat Stilettos: She wears black high heeled shoes along with her armor.
  • Contralto of Strength: She's a former mercenary leader turned one of Zenoira's greatest generals before she joins the liberation, and has a noticeable deep voice.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Despite her class being called Dark Marquess, she's ultimately a good, if aloof individual.
  • Defector from Decadence: She's one of the only Imperial characters to defect without being first defeated in combat or freed by the Ring of the Unicorn. She's in fact turned on the Empire before Alain even arrives. It turns out she was never on the Empire's side, having joined them so she could get a suit of ancient Zenoiran armor and avenge her parents.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Completing the early game mission “As The Tricorns Ride” shows a flashback to her initial disbandment of the group and breakaway from her brother; if the mission is done while she’s in the party instead, she’s got dialogue with the possessed Bruno just like Travis does.
  • Evil Costume Switch: When we first see her in a flashback, she was wearing the uniform worn by Sellswords, but when we meet her at Drakenhold, she swaps that for ancient Zenoiran armor upon joining the Empire. However, this is actually subverted, because she only joined the Empire to steal the armor and use it to get her revenge against the Empire and avenge her family.
  • Jack of All Stats: As an Axe Dark Marquess she's got overall balanced stats and can fit into nearly any party composition. Her only mediocre stat is her Guard Rate, but that's mostly moot as she has access to great shields which already have a high guard rate. Her starting skillset includes a lethal combination of an high-initiative blanket enemy debuff, a sweeping stun attack for groups, a single-target heavy blow for individuals, and even a follow-up Life Drain attack for survivability.
  • Handicapped Badass: She's actually missing an eye, but she's a powerful warrior despite it.
  • "No. Just… No" Reaction: If Alain proposes she take the Ring of the Maiden, she guesses right away what he called her for, and rejects the offer before Alain can even speak and explain himself. Unlike other options, the player has to confirm twice that they wish to do so for her to accept the offer. Alain also has to agree that they will face challenges together rather than claim they won't have problems.
  • Sensual Spandex: Her armor is a skintight bodysuit with armored elements over it.
  • Throwing Your Shield Always Works: One of her main attacks, Death Spin, involves her throwing her spinning, spiked shield at a row of enemies before grabbing it again. The way it is depicted, with strange energy around it, suggests this attack only works due to the powers of the unique armor she wears.

    Giethe
Voiced By: Masashi Yamane (JP), Patrick Seitz (EN)
Class: Legionary
A Cornian lord known for his cruelty even before Zenoira's invasion gave him the opportunity to defect and satiate his bloodlust.
  • Ambiguous Situation: No one knows precisely why he's being called back to Cornia to answer to Galerius. Some, even Giethe himself, believe that the emperor is going to punish him for some failure on his part, but there are also orders to have his luggage packed and himself safely transported there.
  • Arc Villain: For the mission “Blooming Rose Upon A Rock”, during the greater Drakenhold arc.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: His reaction to someone trying to get vengeance for acts of slaughter he'd committed in the past ten years; specifically, Virginia trying to avenge the Knights of the Rose.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He can be seen in the prologue among the lords who betrayed Ilenia for Valmore, and even has dialogue with Ilenia’s unit if “Talk” is selected.
  • Establishing Character Moment: He enters a mid-cutscene where a soldier in his service is badmouthing him, murders the man for his insolence, and rants furiously about the situation he’s in.
  • Fluffy the Terrible: If having the epithet "of the Feathered Crest" wasn't disarming enough, Giethe's heraldry is flanked by a pair of innocuous chickens.
  • Hate Sink: The man has no redeeming qualities, being a cruel, craven, and arrogant man. Part of why Virginia is so consumed with rage at him is how the Knights of the Rose died to such a detestable person.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: All his installed siege weapons can be taken over to make progress into his stage, with one particular catapult even capable of hitting him directly for admittedly meager damage from a distance.
  • Kaizo Trap: An in-universe one. He has a hidden catapult poised at the mouth of the narrow road leading to his garrison, ready to spring on any units that have managed to either circumvent or eliminate his visible defenses.
  • One-Man Army: Killed many of the Knights of the Rose by himself, skewering warrior after warrior in his attempt to assassinate a young Virginia.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Though Giethe is a minor villain who may not even be encountered or noticed, his actions greatly affected Virginia and the Drakenhold arc.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: To Galerius himself as a darkly armored warlord who comes into conflict with a blue-haired Crusader/Valkyria. Josef is horrified at the parallels when Virginia and the surviving Knights of the Rose leave to face him on their own, desperate to prevent a tragedy akin to to Queen Ilenia's sacrifice from happening again.

Encountered in Elheim

    Alcina
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/alcina_8.png
Click here to see Alcina as a Sorceress
Voiced By: Mamiko Noto (JP), Caitlin Glass (EN)
Class: Sorceress, Dark Marquess (Staff)

One of the Empire's top generals in charge of operations in Elheim. Alcina is Yahna's mentor, and was herself court sorceress for Cornia in the time of Alain's grandfather.

  • Alas, Poor Villain: Her death is treated as a sad affair, with her admitting that all she did was in vain, and that even if she had succeeded, Gerard would've hated her for it.
  • A Lighter Shade of Black: Though complicit in the subjugation of Elheim and driven by an ultimately selfish goal, Alcina is — compared to Gailey and especially Baltro — the least malicious of the Elheim antagonists and is treated with far more sympathy by the cast.
  • Ambiguous Situation: There are hints that her relationship with Gerard was romantic and considered scandalous (given she was "merely" a court mage and he was presumably married to Ilenia's mother), with him referring to her as "my darling" in a flashback and his favor toward her the product of rumors in the populace. That he died protecting her leads to a hoard of malicious rumors and earns her the scorn of the remaining royal family of the time, but it remains unclear just how intimate their relationship was.
  • The Archmage: She's the former Cornia court mage, and mentor to Yahna. Even in the present it's clear that Alcina's mastery of magic is a cut above anyone else's but Baltro.
  • Arc Villain: Of the Elheim segment of the story.
  • Dragon with an Agenda: Despite serving as a major lieutenant for Valmore, she's pursuing her own plans to resurrect King Gerard in Alain's body. This means she needs Alain alive to use as a vessel, which is why she concealed his hiding spot from Galerius and saves him from Baltro, even though killing him would ensure the destruction of the Liberation Army and Zenoira's victory.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: She's the witch in Ilenia's party in the prologue. She has no lines, and when you meet her again she wears a very different outfit making it hard to recognize her.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Yahna. Both are witches who served the Cornian royal family and develop a bond with the prince of Cornia for their time. The parallels are made explicit at the end of Alain and Yahna's Rapport, where they realize how close their situation is to Alcina and Gerard.
  • Fallen Hero: Was once the court sorceress for Alain's grandfather and taught Yahna most everything she knows. But her desperate desire to restore her beloved monarch to life leads her to make use of vile magic and collaborate with a transparently evil enemy.
  • Gondor Calls for Aid: Despite having long left the kingdom following Gerard's death (due to the rest of the royal family now treating her with scorn), when Valmore's rebellion threatened his daughter Ilenia, Alcina actually returned to Cornia to join in the queen's defense. Seeing Valmore's ability to raise the dead convinced her to switch sides to join him, in hopes of resurrecting Gerard.
  • Hot Witch: She's a tall and statuesque woman. She wore the same revealing dresses sorceresses wear, up until she gained her Dark Marquess armor.
  • Lady of Black Magic: She's a witch in black armor. And has mastered Baltro's possession magic.
  • The Lost Lenore: Gerard is this to her. He died shielding her from a poisoned arrow, and she clearly loved him. She hopes to resurrect him in Alain's body, even knowing he'd hate her for what she did, solely so she can hear him one more time.
  • Love Makes You Crazy: Betrayed her nation and was willing to use Gerard's own grandson as a vessel just to see him again, even if he would have despised what Alcina had become.
  • Making a Splash: She teleports by summoning a column of water around herself. In combat she uses both a single target water spell and one that attacks the entire squad.
  • Mysterious Protector: She kept Galerius from finding Alain's location, as she needed him alive.
  • Not Brainwashed: When Alain and Yahna first learn of her role in leading Zenoira into Elheim, they speculate about the likelihood of her being controlled like others they’ve encountered. Only to learn upon meeting her that she wasn’t and in fact, had herself even partaken in said control of others by possessing Eltolinde.
  • Older Than They Look: She looks to be an adult or middle aged. She's actually older than Yahna, having taught her magic. She is the one who taught Yahna the spell to restore youth.
  • Pragmatic Villainy:
    • Rather than force the elves into submission, she possesses their Turenós, Eltolinde, through Zenoira's magick to efficiently control them. She also wants Eltolinde as a vessel, likely so that she can transfer her own soul into her and live like an elf, bypassing the flaws of the de-aging spell she cast on herself as well as be with Gerard in a new body.
    • She forbid the destruction of Envélda, the tree that grants the elves their power and Elheim the ability to protect itself from invaders, because she relies on it just as much as the elves she is conquering. She also restrained Gailey from destroying the tree, but when he lost to the Liberation Army at Laurhal, he tries to burn it down behind her back so that he can salvage his own reputation.
  • Puzzle Boss: To defeat her, you need to keep the other two gates she can teleport to garrisoned so that when you beat her whole unit, she’s thrown out upon trying to claim them.
  • Secret Character: Joins only after completing the post-game mission, "Dying Breath of an Empire Fallen".
  • Swap Fighter: In the post game, after recruiting her as a Dark Marquess, you can speak to her Sorceress sprite near Gran Corrine to "swap" her back to her old Sorceress class, and vice versa. Mechanically, you recruit a second copy of her that deactivates her Dark Marquess self and enables the Sorceress one, or the other way around by talking to the inactive one.
  • Tragic Villain: She's clearly aware of her own villainy, and is fully aware that even if she succeeds, all she'll have accomplished is making sure Gerard hates her for everything she's done. Ultimately she just wants to hear his voice one more time, even if it's him denouncing her, because she can't live with the fact that he died saving her and she couldn't save him in turn. Her death is treated as a tragic affair with her admitting how her goals were ultimately futile.
  • Villainous Rescue: She saves Alain and Eltolinde from Baltro, who intended on killing both of them to ensure Zenoira's victory, for her own purposes.

    Gailey
Voiced By: Masaki Terasoma (JP), Mike Bodie (EN)
Class: Sergeant

A high ranking noble who served under Queen Ilenia during her last stand. He now willingly works for Galerius, assisting in his control of Elheim.

  • Arc Villain: Alongside Alcina in Elheim although he doesn’t last as long as her.
  • Asshole Victim: He's killed by his own men after trying to burn down Envélda due to how he treated them like dirt.
  • Beyond Redemption: Declared as such after attempting to burn Envélda and the forests down, due to his complete disregard for the consequences said actions would entail.
  • Broken Pedestal: Even after being expelled from knighthood by him, Berenice respected that he did so for honorable reasons, and is ashamed of the man that he became afterwards.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He's one of Queen Ilenia's companions during the Action Prologue.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Although he stood at Ilenia’s side through the treachery of other Cornian lords, the moment she died he willingly bent the knee to Galerius.
  • Hate Sink: Gailey is one of the most reprehensible villains in the game, despite his claims to the contrary. Not only did he willingly sell himself out to Zenoira immediately after Queen Ilenia fell, but he basically spat on her last wish for Josef to take Alain to safety so he could become the next king, with Gailey saying Alain could go to hell since he wasn't Ilenia herself and calling Josef a coward for not standing by her to the bitter end. He didn't even serve Ilenia out of real loyalty, but instead because he only loved his ideal of her rather than the woman she really was. Gailey also treated his subordinates like crap, and when he suffered his first defeat in Elheim he tried to burn down Envélda to save himself from Galerius's wrath. He's such a selfish asshole that his own men betray and kill him in the end.
  • Hypocrite: With his dying breath, he derides Josef for having fled Ilenia's Last Stand whereas he stood beside her, conveniently ignoring that Josef was ordered away specifically to protect her son, who he’d just insulted without any regard for his Queen’s actual feelings. Josef left the battle at Illenia's command but remained loyal even after her death, while Gailey stayed and willingly threw his lot in with Zenoira to save himself. Further, if dialogue with Giethe is prompted in the prologue, Gailey castigates the man for being an opportunistic coward — something Gailey himself would eventually become guilty of.
  • Irony:
    • He joins Zenoira because of the supposed death of Ilenia. Unbeknownst to him, Galerius was actually a possessed Ilenia.
  • It's All About Me: The man is a complete egomaniac, willing to burn down Envélda and Elheim's forests so Galerius won't punish him for his failures.
  • Kill It with Fire: His solution to getting out of Elheim after his first defeat with the Liberation Army was to try and burn down the sacred tree Envélda to remove the Winding Wood so that he could escape and find a way to salvage his own reputation. It is also no coincidence that his weapon is the Flame Javelin.
  • The Lost Lenore: His reason for defecting, as he claims in his dying moments, is that he was devoted solely to Ilenia. Once she fell, he couldn't stand the thought of Cornia being ruled by another.
  • Loving a Shadow: It's made clear that he was destroyed by an obsession with his idea of the Queen more than the woman she actually was. It is implied it was a romantic obsession, as he specifically hates that Ilenia continued to love Alain's father after he died, claiming he took her heart with him when he died. As such, he refuses to follow Alain, despite how this makes his supposed care for Ilenia hypocritical.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: He keeps insulting his soldiers and dragging them around with ominous warnings about the consequences for failing. They try to ditch him, and the confrontation turns violent. It leaves them all dead.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: To a fault as he detested anyone else, even Ilenia's son and rightful heir, having the throne of Cornia (albeit, this is implied to have been due to jealousy over how Alain is a living reminder that Ilenia would never love him the way she loved Alain's father).
  • One Degree of Separation: He was the one who denied Berenice her knighthood, as revealed in her recruitment sidequest and in turn, his death scene where she confronts him over discarding the values he’d once claimed to uphold.
  • The Quisling: He's the only member of the prologue squad to serve Galerius willingly and for personal gain. Alcina also willingly joined the Empire but did so to revive King Gerard while secretly making sure Galerius did not find Alain.
  • Rewarded as a Traitor Deserves: After swearing loyalty to Galerius, Gailey was put to work aiding the conquest of Drakenhold, a bitter and difficult campaign. Upon its completion, his considerable contributions were noted before he was Kicked Upstairs to watch over Elheim, but was effectively rendered Alcina's crony. To illustrate, Galerius saw fit to trust the brainwashed Hodrick and Renault with advancing his true endgame whilst Gailey languished in a region the emperor was no longer personally invested in.
  • Secret Character: Joins only after completing the post-game mission, "Dying Breath of an Empire Fallen".
  • Stone Wall: The last battle with Gailey has him positioned behind a wall of cavalry units, which includes a Sainted Knight that aids him in topping up everyone's health. Since he himself is a Sergeant, he will shrewdly use his Javelin moves to target any Fliers a player brought to try and rip through his troops. Thankfully, due to his own dislike of elves, this is one of the few fights in Elheim that doesn't have strong debuff removal options on the opposing side, so Shamans and Druids can be used more freely here to erode defenses and sap action points.
  • Token Evil Teammate: The more we learn about him makes it clear he was this in Ilenia’s squad. Hodrick and Renault didn’t turn of their own wills, and although Alcina betrayed her quicker than Gailey, she did so only after seeing the Zenoiran magic and being overwhelmed by her hope of reviving King Gerard; she’d also previously returned to service to defend his daughter, and may even have known she wasn’t quite truly dead. In contrast, Gailey was loyal to nothing but his own impression of Ilenia, and completely abandoned any values he may have had when she died.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Gailey's battle voice lines post-Zenoira are a lot less polite than they were in the prologue.
  • Undignified Death: Josef found his death to be pitiful, as he was fatally wounded by his own soldiers that he constantly belittles.

Encountered in Bastorias

    Conrad
Voiced By: Kengo Tsujii (JP), Kirk Allen (EN)
Class: Viking

A nobleman from Drakenhold who sided with Zenoira. He leads a siege on the Ancient City of Bastoritza that was recently reclaimed by the Frostbloom.

  • Aristocrats Are Evil: His entry in the Fevrith Archive mentions that he once belonged to a noble house in Drakenhold before joining Zenoira after annexation. Owing to his nobility, he is baffled that he is taking orders from Elgor, who he sees as a "peasant."
  • Killed Offscreen: After his defeat at the hands of the Frostbloom and the Liberation Army, he was taken prisoner and interrogated by Morard. Afterwards, he is never mentioned again, with the Fevrith Archive mentioning that he was left in a local gaol and died.

    Deborah
Voiced By: Misato Murai (JP), Shara Kirby (EN)
Class: Sorceress

A Zenoiran witch stationed in the Bastorian tundra.

    Elgor

Click here to see Elgor unhelmeted (Warning: Spoiler)
Voiced By: Shigeru Chiba (JP), Brent Mukai (EN)
Class: Dark Marquess (Lance)
A Zenoiran general assigned to retrieve the Lion Stone from Bastorias.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: His last words are him describing his dream of freeing the Rat Bestrals from opression, and Morard laments that they could have fought for that dream together if Elgor hadn't chosen such terrible means to achieve it.
  • Animal Motifs: A wererat Bestral who opportunistically betrayed first Bastorias for power, and later his benefactors once it was in his grasp.
  • Animal Testing: Baltro used the bestrals, a race of beastmen, to experiment with berserk magick that affects them, with Elgor as the only survivor of this experiment. He also resembles a lab rat with his white fur and red eyes.
  • Arc Villain: Of the Bastorias arc.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Mortally wounded, he's satisfied he even got to catch a glimpse what a world with him as king of Bastoria would have entailed.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Was just a lowly wererat who managed to become a powerful general in the Zenoiran Empire.
  • Hide Your Otherness: Elgor is actually a wererat bestral, but hides this fact behind an all-covering suit of armor. He ditches the helmet once he makes his heritage known.
  • Secret Character: Joins only after completing the post-game mission, "Dying Breath of an Empire Fallen".
  • Sole Survivor: Of Baltro's experiments with Bestrals.
  • The Starscream: He backstabs Reimann and takes the Bastorias Blue for himself, revealing he only joined Zenoira so that he could rule Bastoria himself.
  • Token Minority: He's the only Rat Bestral seen in the game.
  • You Dirty Rat!: Revealed as a Rat Bestral, this wererat is willing to enslave his own race in order to rise above those that oppressed his fellow rats; albeit, said motive at least makes him more sympathetic than this trope usually entails.

    Reimann
Voiced By: Yasuhiro Mamiya (JP), Mark Hunter (EN)
Class: Warlock
A noble of Cornia who willingly betrayed his country.
  • Arc Villain: He’s leading the occupation of Bastorias for Galerius and even seized the capital himself. Until he’s betrayed by Elgor.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: If the endgame is reached without defeating him, he’s shown having successfully enslaved the Bestrals and is escorting them to fight for Zenoira.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: He thinks he's a powerful leader who will gain control over Bastorias, and to an extent he is, but as soon as the Liberation Army sets foot in Bastorias, Reimann quickly looses ground to the Liberation Army. Not only does he underestimate the Liberation Army, but Elgor plays into his ego so when he has the chance he can kill him and rule Bastorias. He only manages to avert this if the Liberation Army never goes to Bastorias or takes care of him.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He can be seen in the prologue among the lords who betrayed Ilenia for Valmore, and even has dialogue with Ilenia’s unit if “Talk” is selected.
  • Entitled Bastard: Believes himself in the right for wanting a whole country under his governance, and to make a Slave Race of the Bestrals.
  • Fantastic Racism: He sees bestrals as lowly beast that deserve only to be subjugated by him. Ironically, he's killed by Elgor, a wererat Bestral.
  • Hate Sink: Reimann has no redeeming traits at all, belittling everyone around him, being racist towards bestrals, and has no issues enslaving them to his will. Unlike Elgor, who is given an Alas, Poor Villain death, Reimann is betrayed by Elgor and nobody sheds a tear or concern about his loss.
  • Mad Scientist: The magical variant is implied, as he alludes to the “importance of his research” as a motivator for betraying Cornia. He’s specifically researching how to control the minds of Bestrals.
  • Smug Snake: He’s self-important and conceited, believing himself intellectually superior to most people, but he’s overwhelmed by the Liberation Army and doesn’t even suspect Elgor to have motives not aligned with his until he’s already bleeding out in the snow.

Encountered in Albion

    Bradley
Voiced By: Teruyuki Tanzawa (JP), Keith Silverstein (EN)
Class: Paladin
A paladin from Cornia who threw his lot in with Zenoira to sate his thirst for battle.
  • A Good Way to Die: Before he dies he tells Josef their battle was the best battle of his life and that he is finally satisfied.
  • Affably Evil: Despite being a Blood Knight, Bradley is cordial and somewhat polite to not just his own troops, but to his enemies. He doesn't even hold ill over his loss to the Liberation Army, only being disappointed he could not finish what Zenoira was working towards.
  • Blood Knight: He took Zenoira's side because he could not stand being in a world at peace.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He's one of the characters that prevent Ilenia's unit from leaving the city in the tutorial and can be spoken to during the battle.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Josef, both being paladins who served under Queen Ilenia, but Josef is motivated by loyalty while Bradley only desires carnage. They even have unique dialogue if Josef fights Bradley and only Josef is present for Bradley's death.
  • Face Death with Dignity: He is ultimately a Graceful Loser and accepts his demise like a knight.
  • Noble Demon: He makes no pretence about being a good person, but compared to the other Cornish traitors he’s upfront and honest; he doesn’t partake in any dirty tactics or untoward behaviour, treats his underlings with cordial respect, and keeps his civility to the end. Josef ultimately pities how his vices overtook the morally-upstanding man he attempted to be.
  • Villainous Valor: He’s well aware of the likelihood he’s doomed when the Liberation Army arrives in Albion, and faces them without an ounce of cowardice or trepidation.

    Hodel
Voiced By: Michitake Kikuchi (JP), Jonathan Lipow (EN)
Class: Doom Knight
A doom knight from Cornia who sided with Zenoira during Galerius's coup.
  • The Bully: Compared to his fellow traitors (especially Bradley, the least cruel of them), Hodel takes particular pleasure in taunting and psychologically tormenting people.
  • Early-Bird Cameo:
    • He can be spoken to in the prologue, preventing Ilenia from leaving the city if approached.
    • He makes an appearance in a flashback during Alain and Hodrick's second rapport, where he was stopped by Hodrick from attacking Pritzlasse Fortress in retaliation to raids by Drakenhold.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Has an air of civility and regret, even as he taunts Umerus over the quandary he’s forced her into and gleefully gloats to Scarlett about forcing her friend to betray her by holding her child brother hostage.
  • I Fight for the Strongest Side!: He declares in the prologue that he believes Valmore has the drive and means to lead by force, and challenges Ilenia to prove him wrong by striking the general down. Unknown to him, she does so… and is then possessed by Galerius in Valmore’s stead.
  • I Have Your Wife: Forces Umerus’ compliance by threatening to kill her little brother.
  • Opportunistic Bastard: He takes advantage of Valmore’s rebellion to increase his own standing, and a decade later is perfectly happy to exploit Umerus’ love for another person to put her under his thumb while tormenting her with the consequences of failing again.
  • A Pupil of Mine Until He Turned to Evil: He was once Ilenia's student in the arts of war. However, he betrayed her when he joined Valmore's rebellion and closed off her way of escape.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Child: As a child, his parent's pacifism costed them territory and he dreamed of become a warrior to restore his family's reputation to its former glory. Now, he's a cruel and opportunistic lord that willingly joined Valmore's rebellion, which restored the Zenoiran Empire.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He's the reason Umerus betrays Scarlett, since Hodel is holding Umerus's younger brother hostage.
