Bastorias

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/world_emblem_bastorias_4.png
A country extending across a vast cold region to the north, populated by various types of beast-folk known as "bestrals" who possess frightening martial prowess. Currently, the country is not ruled by a king but rather a council of clan leaders.

     In General
  • Barefoot Cartoon Animal: Most bestrals eschew footwear of any kind, with the exceptions of werebears and werelions.
  • Beast Man: The "bestrals" hailing from Bastorias are various fashions of anthropomorphic peoples, ranging from fox-folk to werewolves. Despite their name, they can't transform into different forms. Though it is possible to change a human into a bestral and vice versa.
  • Cat Folk: Werecats are a civilian bloodline, due to their small stature and general dislike for war. They are known for fishing.
  • Fantastic Racism: The never-seen wererat bestrals are mistreated by the rest. This is why Elgor was willing to collaborate with Zenoira to become king of Bastorias, so his kind would no longer have to live in fear. To their credit, most of the main cast are sympathetic to his aim, if not his means, and the fact that Morard is crowned king in the new order suggests he'll take steps to try to change things going forward.
  • Fauns and Satyrs: Weregoats are a civilian bloodline that doesn't partake in combat. They are primarily in agriculture and merchantry, with a female weregoat running the taverns in Bastorian cities.
  • The Ghost: Of all the Bestral bloodlines mentioned in the Fevrith Archive, the player will not encounter any Rat Bestrals. Justified, since due to being the weakest bloodline, they're third-class citizens that hide from other Bestrals in the shadows. Except Elgor, whose entire motivation is to change his bloodline's lot in Bastoria.
  • Grim Up North: The frozen northlands of Fevrith.
  • King of Beasts: Traditionally, the lion bloodline was the royalty of Bastorias, but Zenoira's advance curbed their population to just one.
  • No-Sell: The Great Sage of Bastorias reveals that, due to the unique nature of bestrals, they are unable to be possessed by the Zenoiran spirits. The closest thing they can do is mind control them using the Bastorias Blue or similar methods. This also means the Ring of the Unicorn isn't able to restore the minds of those affected heavily by them, as Alain finds out after arriving in Bastorias.
  • Was Once a Man: All the bestrals save Morard descend from Elves who used the Bastorias Blue to turn themselves into beast folk to repel the ancient Zenoiran empire.

Frostblooms

    Yunifi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yunifi.png
Voiced By: Hisako Kanemoto (JP), Judy Alice Lee (EN)
Class: Snow Ranger
A young human girl that's a member of the Frostblooms, a small Bastorian resistance movement.
  • Amnesiac Hero: Like Morard, she has no memory of her life from more than eight years ago; this despite being not too young of a child judging by her current age. Implicitly, her transformation into a human by the Bastorias Blue locked her memories away.
  • Babies Ever After: Although her ending with Alain doesn’t itself elaborate on the matter, if he offers to marry her she makes clear she wants children.
  • Glass Cannon: Yunifi can do a considerable amount of damage with her Glacial Rain, but she can't take it.
  • Happily Adopted: Yunifi doesn’t remember her real parents and was taken in by Ramona who she sees as a mother.
  • Hartman Hips: She has very large hips and thighs, with her official art and "flourish" animation showing her butt for players to see.
  • Killed Offscreen: If you enter the final battle without entering Bastorias, it is strongly implied that she is already dead, as Bastorias is fully controlled by Reimann and her entire found family is brainwashed.
  • King Incognito: She's actually the lion Bestral princess, in human form. Though she's unaware of that fact until she pieces it together.
  • Mistaken Identity: She initially crosses paths with Lex and Alain after the former has just slain a crazed werewolf that attacked him first, and believes them to be enemy Zenoirans, shooting them with a few arrows before trying to run away.
  • The Nose Knows: When Lex catches up to her and tries to tell her that he and Alain are the Liberation army and not Zenoirans, she confirms it by sniffing Alain and identifying the smell of Cornian grass on him. It's revealed that she was once a lion bestral girl who was turned human by the Bastoras Blue Stone, explaining her keen sense of smell.
  • Orphan's Plot Trinket: When she first encounters Lex and Alain, she drops her pendant, which is returned to her when they reunite. It is mentioned a few more times during the Bastorias campaign, such as Ramona asking about it, and turns out to be a fragment of the Bastorias Blue.
  • Pointy Ears: Though she appears to be human, her ears are notably angular, compared to other human ears, which are circular. This is because she wasn't originally human, but a bestral who was transformed into a human. In addition, since the first bestrals were originally elves, it might have some part in shaping her ears.
  • Rain of Arrows: As a Snow Ranger, she has the Ranged Assist leader effect that allows her to aid allies with a volley of arrows if she is leading the unit. Upon reaching Level 30, she learns the active skill Glacial Rain, which rains down a volley of arrows that damage all enemies 3 times and inflict freeze.
  • That Cloud Looks Like...: Once saw a cat-shaped cloud in the sky, tried to follow it, and ended up falling in the ocean.
  • Token Human: She is the only human playable character native to Bastorias, the land of the bestrals. Except it is revealed that she was originally a werelion princess, but was transformed into a human by the Bastorias Blue that belonged to her father. Ironically, it is Morard, originally a Zenoiran soldier transformed into a werelion, who was the Token Human.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: She figures out after hearing Morard's origin that she's the Werelion princess, turned into a human by the same magic that made Morard a lion.

    Morard

Voiced By: Tomoyuki Shimura (JP), Edward Bosco (EN)
Class: Werelion
A werelion close to Yunifi like an older brother and fellow member of the Frostblooms.
  • Amnesiac Hero: Like Yunifi, he has no clear memory of his life from more than eight years ago; this is likely due to his injured state when he and Yunifi were found by Ramona. They first begin to resurface after an encounter with Reimann and Elgor, in which the latter drove him into a feral state using his magic; after being pacified and by Yunifi’s pendant, his subconscious mind while dreaming realised he wasn’t a lion. It’s elaborated much later that he was near-death when the king of Bastorias, himself dying, used the Bastorias Blue to save his life at the cost of his human form.
  • Big Brother Mentor: Though they’re evidently not related by blood, Morard treats Yunifi like a little sister; their shared past of being found together without memory of their respective pasts doesn’t hurt. Nor does the revelation that her father saved Morard’s life in gratitude for protecting Yunifi despite his initial loyalties and effectively trusted her to his care, which coupled with him becoming the same kind of Bestral makes them family in both a metaphoric and spiritual sense.
  • The Big Guy: Like the Berserker class, Morard is a huge guy whose skills involve self-buffing and maintaining high health.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy:
    • Upon receiving the Bastorias Blue stolen by Elgor, Reimann demonstrates its power by turning Morard berserk, causing him to attack Alain, Yunifi, and Ramona. Fortunately, Yunifi’s pendant glows an azure light that snaps Morard back to normal before he could do harm to his family.
    • If you enter the final battle without entering Bastorias, he and Ramona are brainwashed by Reimann, as he completely controls Bastorias and sends them to reinforce Gran Corrine and fight the Liberation Army.
  • Defector from Decadence: He used to be a Zenoiran soldier, who turned on his employers when they gave him an order he found too unconscionable to follow.
  • Gentle Giant: He’s a particularly tall, broad-shouldered individual who is also soft-spoken and deeply compassionate.
  • Going Native: A former human before his transformation, he’s very much adopted Bestral custom and identity even beyond the secrecy of his own origin. Granted he didn’t remember for years that he was human, but by the time he does Morard has become as much a Bestral as any naturally-born member of the species.
  • Head Swap: On top of being a Moveset Clone, his body is just an edited Berserker sprite with a lion head swapped on.
  • King of Beasts: Being a Werelion, he's part of the royal line. Except it turns out he's not, as he was turned into a Werelion by the king to save his life. He still ends up becoming the king of Bastorias in the end.
  • Moveset Clone: His Werelion class is literally the Gladiator (well, Berserker) class but with an additional Nightwalk leader ability. It's a hint that he's not a trueborn Bestral, but a transformed human.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: His family is meant to be the guardians of the legendary Bastorias Blue stone, hence why it's also known as the Lion Stone. However, he gave it to Ramona to hide somewhere safe while he fights to liberate the land, not wanting it to fall out of his pocket on the battlefield. It's revealed that Morard is not a real werelion, but actually a human soilder in Zenoira's employ. He was disgusted when his employers wanted him to take the lion king's daughter hostage and so defected from them. Once Morard was caught up to, he was nearly dying after managing to fend off his pursuers, then was saved after the Bastorian king himself used the Bastoras Blue Stone on him to transform him into a werelion. Eventually it's played straight with Morard being crowned as the new king of Bastorias.
  • Spanner in the Works: It turns out that his role in disobeying his employers’ orders seriously stoppered Zenoira’s efforts in getting Bastorias under their full control.
  • Top-Heavy Guy: Not unlike the Werebear or the human Gladiator classes, Morard’s much larger above the waist than his (also strongly-built) lower body.
  • Was Once a Man: He's a former Zeinoran soldier who switched sides, saving the king's daughter, and was turned into a Werelion by the previous king.

    Ramona
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ramone.png
Voiced By: Nanako Mori (JP)
Class: Wereowl
A wereowl matriarch who serves as the founder of the Frostblooms. She is also Yunifi's adoptive mother.
  • Big Good: For the Bastorias part of the story, being the leader of the Frostblooms.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: If you enter the final battle without entering Bastorias, she is also brainwashed alongside Morard, as Reimann sends her to reinforce Gran Corrine and fight the Liberation Army.
  • May–December Romance: Averted. Ramona's partnership if picked for Rite of Covenant seems platonic, possibly due to her age, as unlike the elves who are chronologically older but still relatively young adults, she's implicitly middle aged to elderly biologically, as well.
  • My Instincts Are Showing: After seeing Fran give her gryphon a dust bath, Ramona feels a strong urge to take one herself. She almost does, before Fran comes back to her undressing.
  • Non-Mammal Mammaries: Ramona is an anthropomorphic owl, but has a noticeably large bust.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: Unlike other wereowls, Ramona wears a small pair of specs and serves as leader of the Frostblooms.

Snowpetals

    Dinah
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dinah_1.png
Voiced By: Sayaka Senbongi (JP), Laura Post (EN)
Class: Werefox
A werefox who doesn't trust outsiders, but eventually warms up to Alain and the Liberation after seeing them fight to save her troops.
  • Battle Bikini: Like all werefoxes, Dinah wears nothing but an armored bikini.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Her mistrust of humanity is steadily thawed in her Rapport conversations with them.
  • Fantastic Racism: She doesn't like outsiders in general, but she particularly doesn't like humans. Granted, it's not without reason (see Unwitting Pawn below). She does come to warm up to them, or at least to the Liberation Army.
  • Foxy Vixen: A sexy foxwoman in a Battle Bikini.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Dinah cares so much about Yunifi that she requests to Alain that if he's ever forced to choose between saving one of them, he must choose Yunifi over her. Alain doesn't agree with it, saying if it ever came to that, he would do everything in his power to save both of them as sacrificing one person for another is not acceptable. She has a minor freak out when he actually does like she asked and gets injured in the process.
  • Idiot Hair: She has a strand of hair that sticks out above her head. While she isn't an idiot or mischievous, like most examples of the trope, she is very quick to anger and hot tempered.
  • A Mother to Her Men: Dinah acts without a thought for herself to charge in and save her captured men from the Zenoiran troops.
  • Tragic Bigot: She was tricked by a human into being an accessory to a slaver. Small wonder she's extremely on edge around outsiders and humans.
  • Tsundere: Quite heavy on the "tsun", especially if you romance her. She is very standoffish towards Alain, but shows genuine concern for him when he's injured trying to protect her and Yunifi, even if it is done through yelling at him.
  • Unwitting Pawn: As a child, Dinah met a traveling human merchant who gave her a necklace, on the basis that she would promote his after-hours “store.” Said store was actually a trafficking operation, and all the kids who were enticed to go there were never seen again.

    Rui
Voiced By: Masafumi Kobatake (JP), Doug Erholtz (EN)
Class: Werewolf
A werewolf member of the Snowpetals, Dinah's mercenary unit, that's been captured by the Zenoirans.
  • Distressed Dude: Dinah's recruitment mission has the army tasked with defeating the enemies trying to transport Rui before they make it to the southern border, and then recapture the town where the rest of the Snowpetals are being held hostage.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: He briefly joins the fight he's rescued during in order to save his comrades, but Dinah tasks him with keeping the Snowpetals safe in her absence after deciding to join the Liberation to free those that were already captured.

Others

    Govil
Voiced By: Hidenori Takahashi (JP), Xander Mobus (EN)
Class: Werewolf
A werewolf who takes a violent proactive approach in dealing with Zenoira, which putts him at odds with Bertrand.
  • Blood Knight: Prefers to get rid of Zenoiran troops through violence.
  • Hot-Blooded: Prefers a proactive approach to the war, but it leads him to fly into unnecessary danger.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: His belligerent attitude towards Bertrand (whose pacifism is borne of personal tragedy) can appear heartless, but as Yunifi notes the situation under Zenoira isn’t just going to fix itself and action needs to be taken to improve things.
  • Optional Party Member: In the mission "To Resist or To Yield", the Liberation army must either side with him over Bertrand or defeat them both to recruit him.

    Bertrand
Voiced By: Takeshi Hirabayashi (JP), Erik Braa (EN)
Class: Werebear
A werebear who prefers a more passive defensive approach in dealing with Zenoira, putting him at odds with Govil.
  • Beary Friendly: He's very mellow, but you don't want to get on his bad side.
  • Head-in-the-Sand Management: His condescending attitude towards Govil (who is driven by righteous fury at his peoples’ suffering) can seem over-cautious and neglectful, although as Morard notes his caution isn’t without reason given the risks and what they’ve already endured under Zenoira.
  • Optional Party Member: In the mission "To Resist or To Yield", the Liberation army must either side with him over Govil or defeat them both to recruit him.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Bertrand is revealed to have had a son who was killed during the Zenoiran attacks.

    Lou
A cat bestral child whose adoptive father, Mutsin, went missing, leading him to investigate the local orphanage Mutsin used to run and its new proprietor Gordon.

    Mutsin
A human man who runs an orphanage in Bastorias.
  • Distressed Dude: Beaumont, under the pseudonym Gordon, seizes his orphanage and holds him prisoner so that he could use it as a base of operation for his schemes involving trafficking Bestral orphans. When he is defeated by the Liberation Army again, Beaumont uses Mutsin as a hostage to get the Liberation to back off. However, Yahna teleports behind him and freezes him before he could do harm to Mutsin.
  • Orphanage of Love: He runs an orphanage that takes care of orphans who lost their parents to the war. He also funded his own orphanage using his own savings.
