     The Rangers
.

Yuri Michaels

A former astronaut from Earth, who was left floating in space during the initial invasion of Gingaku. He was saved by what he claims to be a giant lion. Having been marooned in the Lion Galaxy at the start of the 5 years of occupation, he is chosen by the Lion-01 Cosmo Sphere to become the Red Ranger

  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Downplayed. He went through similarly traumatic incidents to Lucky, but is less of a Stepford Smiler.
  • Amnesiac Dissonance: The brief glimpses we get of his pre-Ranger self show him to have been somewhat lacking in courage, in contrast to his current self being the Ideal Hero.
  • Amnesiac Resonance: As early as chapter 4, he begins to get flashes of the past, with some details re-emerging at random points. It gets lampshaded by Slash.
Slash: It’s strange how you only remember whatever you need during random moments.
  • Berserk Button: Coiloga ends up being this, after more and more of the crap the latter pulls is revealed.
  • Ascended Fanboy: He used to idolise Kyle Jenkins, to the point of following in his footsteps as an astronaut. He soon comes to work with him when Proton’s past comes out
  • The Chosen Zero: Subverted. He at first seems to be a random human who was chosen at random to wield Lion-01’s power. However, not only does he make it his own, but it turns out he was still meant to be a Ranger.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: His missing memories turn out to be caused by such an incident. Coiloga attacked his shuttle during Gingaku’s conquest and he ended up bailing out of the ship, only narrowly avoiding death thanks to Astral Leo.
  • Expy:
    • A lot of his backstory and plot are taken from Geki Jumonji.
    • He ends up taking out three major villains on his own, similar to Riki.
  • Fighting Your Friend: Whenever he goes up against Dark Soul. But due to his amnesia, he lacks the usual angst that goes with this trope.
  • Finishing Move: Cosmic Energy Slash (as his default form), Pegasus Energy Slash (in Pegasus Mode), Eclipse Attack (as the Solar/Lunar Red Ranger) and Big Bang Energy Blast (as the Big Bang Ranger).
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: His weapon of choice is the Cosmo Saber.
  • In the Name of the Moon: “Fire of the Lion, Red Ranger!”
    • As the Solar/Lunar Red Ranger: “Power of the Sun/Moon, Solar/Lunar Red Ranger!”
    • As the Big Bang Ranger: “The Warrior of Light, Big Bang Ranger!”
  • Law of Chromatic Superiority: Nto only does he get three mid-season upgrades, but he manages to defeat the Big Bad singlehandedly.
  • Light Is Good: See his third In the Name of the Moon introduction.
  • Phrase Catcher: Anyone seeing his Big Bang Ranger form for the first time will comment “Nice suit”, be they friend or foe.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: Seems to have one as of chapter 11. Subverted, as it turns out to be Good All Along, merely reacting in response to the No-Holds-Barred Beatdown.
  • Super Mode: The Big Bang Ranger is one for him.
  • The Unreveal: We don’t know what his transformation with Orion-13 looks like.

Myron

A humanoid Alien from the Scorpion Nebula. He found and was chosen by the Scorpion-02 Cosmo Sphere, but at the apparent cost of his brother Heath’s life. He was also responsible for freeing Tarrant from the control of Doctor Cerebron, after which he went into hiding on an abandoned planet.

  • All for Nothing: His attempt to kill Dr. Cerebron to stop his research becomes this when it’s revealed that the doctor lived on.
  • Aloof Ally: Serves as this prior to his full debut in chapter 4, only communicating through a long range device and identifying only as “M”.
  • Berserk Button: He seems to be annoyed by people misusing their intelligence.
  • Broken Pedestal: Feels this way when he discovers that his brother is not only alive, but a member of Gingaku. It becomes a Rebuilt Pedestal when the truth comes out.
  • Fake Defector: Seems to join with Spectrum to rule the universe, only to be revealed as this towards the end of the arc.
  • Finishing Move: Cosmic Energy Cutting (in his base form). Double Sting Break (in his Double Sting Form)
  • In the Name of the Moon: “Venom of the Scorpion! Orange Ranger!”/ “Master of the two points, Orange Ranger: Double Sting Form!”
  • Jack of All Stats: It’s subtle, but at one point, he uses all of the possible formations for the Cosmo Weapon, with no clear disadvantage.
  • Kick the Dog: Has a moment of this in chapter 12, where he shuts Tarrant down to stop the latter from following him.
  • Not So Stoic: He may act The Stoic a lot of the time, but he does show some emotions from time to time.
  • The Smart Guy: Comes from a race that have become experts on chemistry, but proves himself quite the Omni Disciplinary Scientist. He even creates a Cosmo Sphere.
  • Super Mode: Double Sting Form.
  • The Worf Effect: Double Sting Form was the first power up obtained in the fic, so expect it to struggle against villains that are supposed to be tough.

Jiro

A Sirian who’s been wandering the universe since the destruction of his home planet in the Wolf Zone by the Troobian Empire. Gingaku’s conquest has reignited that fear, in spite of his stumbling upon the Werewolf-03 Cosmo Sphere.

Scales

An Android from the Libra system, partnered with Cobras in keeping Gingaku off their current home planet. At some point, he acquired the Balance-04 Cosmo Sphere.

Tarrant

Originally a Bullroid robot built by Dr. Cerebron of the Bull Nebula, he remembers nothing prior to the destruction of the Doctor’s lab, which he knows the scientist’s assistant was responsible for. What he doesn’t know is that Cerebron built him as a mindless weapon of destruction for Gingaku, but Myron freed him when he developed AI and took care of the good doctor while he was at it. Holds the Bull-05 Cosmo Sphere.

Cobras

A warrior from the Snake Nebula, who works in a partnership with Scales due to his name. Holds the Serpent-06 Cosmo Sphere.

  • Break the Badass: Learning that Matoine was devastated by Gingaku breaks his courage enough to be manipulated.
  • The Chew Toy: Post episode 17, nothing goes right for him. He gets a humiliating power up from Proton, gets turned into a Stay in the Kitchen woman by Dark Soul, redirected to the wrong place by Drago, swallowed first by Goatron and beaten senseless by Katseayor. Is it any wonder he chooses to defect to Tricerodo?
  • Dark Is Not Evil: His Void mode, once he turns good once more.
  • Finishing Move: Cosmic Energy Cutting (as the Silver Ranger) Black Hole Glaive (as the Void Ranger).
  • In the Name of the Moon: “Glimmer of the Serpent! Silver Ranger!”/ “Envoy of the Dark, Silver Ranger: Void Mode!”
  • Last of His Kind: His origin story had him escaping his planet as it was blown up.
  • Out of Focus: Prior to his gaining Void Mode.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: Void Mode starts out as this, before becoming a straight Super Mode.
  • Unrealistic Black Hole: His Black Hole Sphere has this ability.

Mila

Part of a race of humanoids from the Chameleon Nebula. In order to survive, her species had trained in Ninja arts and developed the secret to ultimate camouflage. Is part of the founding members of the Anti-Gingaku force. Holds the Chameleon-07 Cosmo Sphere.

Winda

Originally a secretary droid from the Eagle Galaxy, she developed an AI of her own and decided to take down Gingaku. Is initially content to supervise the defenders of the universe, but soon desires to join them. Luckily, she discovers the Eagle-08 Cosmo Sphere.

Slash

A former chef from the Swordfish Zone, chose to take the fight against Gingaku due to his business closing following allegations of speaking against them. He soon got his hands on a Cosmo Sphere, namely Swordfish-09.

Drago.

The current authority in the Anti-Gingaku movement. While he does find the Dragon-10 Cosmo Sphere, he is unable to use it at first.

Barry.

A human child born to slave workers in the Ursine Cluster, he was taken in by a resident of that system after his parents were separated from him and has aged twice as much as his natural age, due to the different orbit on his planet of residence. Soon takes up the Cub-11 Cosmo Sphere.

Proton

The original warrior who defeated Gingaku years ago. Originally from Earth, he soon found himself drafted into the fight for the universe by the Firebird-12 Cosmo Sphere. Forseeing the need for someone to face Gingaku in the future, he had himself preserved in suspended animation, with a set of Cosmo Spheres leaving a trail of breadcrumbs to his location. Real name: Kyle Jennings.

     Allies

Pegasus

Pegasus: The living embodiment of the Pegasus-33 Cosmo Sphere. He has the power to influence his users to fight with increased agility.

Pamela Jones

Yuri’s childhood friend from his time on Earth. She is currently part of the earthbound resistance front, fighting to liberate her planet.

  • Damsel in Distress: Becomes this when Gregory targets her to remove evidence of his past life.
  • Faux Action Girl: Despite being a member of the Earth Resitance Force, she barely ever gets in a fight.
  • Satellite Character: Is defined by being Yuri and Gregorys’ childhood friend and Commander Goodman’s assistant.

Commander Goodman

The leader of the Earth Resistance Force. Is actually something of a veteran when it comes to Rangers.

For tropes applying to her in Wing Force, see here.

Heath

Myron’s brother who was believed dead in an accident prior to the series. In actuality, he was taken over by an ancient entity known as Jiprak, creating the merged persona known as “Spectrum”. After being separated from Jiprak, he becomes an ally of the Rangers in their fight.

  • Always Someone Better: He is the someone to Myron.
  • Anti-Villain: Despite being allied with Gingaku, he takes out their outposts on Earth so he can take over their troops for his army.
  • Bait the Dog: He tells Myron that his plan is to liberate the universe from Gingaku. What he doesn’t mention is that he intends to take it over himself.
  • Bilingual Bonus: Jiprak is Belarus for “scorpion”.
  • Cain and Abel: As shown thanks to the Tricked Out Time in chapter 23, Spectrum’s first instinct upon seeing Myron again was to kill him. He seems to have abandoned this in the present.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After having Jiprak removed from him, Heath becomes an ally of the Rangers.
  • Kick The Son Of A Bitch: He rats out Squideyasu’s rule-breaking to Gingaku and proceeds to take his place. Considering Squideyasu having committed a major Kick the Dog on Yuri in the same chapter, all sympathy is with Spectrum.
  • Mask of Sanity: Literally. After his mask is removed, he falls fully under Jiprak’s control, attacking everyone in sight.
  • Put on a Bus: Departs to free Planet Sori from Gingaku in chapter 34.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Whereas Scorpio was hit with Redemption Equals Death, Heath instead gets hit by Redemption Earns Life.
  • Walking Spoiler: It’s hard to bring Heath up without discussing his important role in Myron’s arc.

Corvin

Proton’s loyal ally who assisted him in many previous battles with Gingaku.

  • Adaptational Heroism: Is not a Glory Hound turned Omnicidal Maniac like Quervo and genuinely seems to care for Proton.
  • Awful Truth: The real Corvin has been dead for years. His body has been possessed by Gingaku to ensure his survival.
  • Crazy-Prepared: To ensure that Proton could help with the conflict to free the universe, he had him frozen in stone and left a trail of breadcrumbs to his location. Too bad Gingaku stopped him from leaving the first piece.
  • Dead All Along: After several debates on whether he’s still around, it turns out that Gingaku has taken over his body.
  • Greater-Scope Paragon: Left the clues that led to the location of Proton.
  • The Nicknamer: The one who gave Proton his nickname. Him calling Kyle by his real name is a tip that something’s wrong when they reunite.
  • Out of Focus: Yes, even a non main character can get hit with this. Despite his large role in Proton’s character arc, he doesn’t get brought up between his appearance on Tempus and the Assault on Planet Black arc. Lampshaded, as no-one aside from Yuri has any clue he existed when he gets brought up.

Astral Leo

A being of great power, from which the energy that fuels the Cosmo Spheres derives. He was the one that saved Yuri in the past, but got massively damaged in the process.

  • Big Good: Becomes this upon his full resurrection.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: After being mentioned in the sixth chapter as the creator of the Cosmo Spheres, Yuri starts displaying a Split Personality. Guess how the two are connected.
  • Empathic Weapon: Can turn into a cannon known as the Penta Blaster.
  • Not Too Dead to Save the Day: After Gingaku absorbs him, he leaves a fraction of his power within Yuri, allowing him to continue morphing and recreate the Big Bang Sphere when it gets shattered.
  • Sharing a Body: Inhabits Yuri’s after losing his own.
  • Walking Spoiler: It’s impossible to bring him up without revealing a major part of Yuri’s Myth Arc.

     Gingaku

Lord Gingaku/ Orbis

The conqueror of the universe and Proton’s ancient enemy. Originally a lowly page known as Orbis, he was able to seize control of the Clan following Proton’s entombment. He remains a hooded figure on his home planet in an unknown system, never interacting with anyone but his subordinates.

  • Benevolent Boss: For the most part, he’s very tolerant of his minions’ failures, merely firing them instead of killing them and once he gains the Anima Core, he uses that power to revive his Co-Dragons. Gets subverted in the finale, where he decides to freeze his minions along with the rest of the universe, intending to be the only life form left conscious.
  • Big Bad: The main threat to the Rangers and the one who successfully conquered the universe.
  • Clone by Conversion: He has the ability to revive from a piece of his DNA placed inside another being. But he doesn’t fully have this power until he possesses Proton and uses his Cosmic Energy.
  • Creepy Crows: Having possessed Corvin’s body, he resembles a monstrous crow in his One-Winged Angel form.
  • Decomposite Character: His counterpart is Don Armage, but his transformations from the final two episodes of Kyuranger get given to Dark Soul.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Gets destroyed before the final arc begins. Subverted, as he later resurrects.
  • Evil Knockoff: In the final arc, having possessed Proton, he creates a new Ranger form that contrasts the Big Bang Ranger.
  • Expy: His role as the universe’s ruler and his having manipulated events to ensure total power makes him one to Emperor Palpatine.
    • His regeneration abilities seem to be taken from Evolto.
    • His desire for order by removing all other life forms makes him similar to Dark Lugiel.
    • Finally, he wants to take the power of a god to become all powerful, similar to Emperor Barodius. Though unlike Barodius, Gingaku actually succeeds.
  • Forgotten Fallen Friend: His brother gets killed in chapter 19, but Gingaku couldn’t care less.
    • Averted in chapter 32. The death of Aporioshi prompts him to take up action and fight the Rangers personally.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Started off as a minor page within the Gingaku Clan. Following his fights with Proton, he rose to become the ruler of the Clan, and eventually the universe.
  • Hero Killer: Manages to kill Drago, Jiro, Tarrant, Scales, Winda and Astral Leo. Only the last one stays dead.
  • One-Winged Angel: After absorbing part of Cobras’ Cosmic Energy from his use of the Gingaku Morpher, he transforms into a more powerful form.
    • Subverted with his final form. It is his original body, prior to the various possessions and transformations he underwent.
  • Orcus on His Throne: Justified. He rules the universe, so he can’t devote time to personally destroy the Rangers himself. Though this gets subverted, as once the Rangers attack his base, he faces them himself quite frequently.
  • Super Mode: His Ranger Form is more akin to this than a One-Winged Angel.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: His goal in conquering the universe is to prevent it from tearing itself apart through rampant chaos.

Coiloga

The Center of Gingaku’s Victorious Generals and the one with the greatest enmity with the Rangers.

  • Asshole Victim: No tears are shed upon either of his deaths.
  • Been There, Shaped History: Within the 5 years of Gingaku’s reign, he attacked Yuri’s shuttle and corrupted his friend, recruited Spectrum into Gingaku, destroyed Cobras’ home planet, wiped out Mila’s fellow students, closed down Slash’s restaurant and kidnapped Barry’s parents. This is the reason he is Hated by All.
  • Body Horror: Half his body is mechanical. And that’s before the reveal of his true nature.
  • The Corrupter: Turned Gregory into Dark Soul as part of Gingaku’s plan for greater power.
  • Expy: A blatant one of Darkonda.
  • Fatal Flaw: Establishes that an I Work Alone mentality is one for all three of the Generals.
  • Hated by All: Practically no-one he interacts with likes him. Not even the other aspects of himself.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: His actions led to no less than 4 Rangers unlocking their powers.
  • Nigh-Invulnerable: Survives multiple finishing moves, but it’s the ones that are powered by a Physical God that defeat him.
  • Villain Decay: After his final resurrection, he goes down easily to Yuri in Big Bang Mode, despite putting up something of a fight last time.
  • The Worf Effect: Tricerodo survives two finishers from powered-up forms. Coiloga then makes his entrance taking her down handily.

Tricerodo

The female Right Victorious General.

Katseayor

The Right of the Victorious Generals. He has dedicated himself to defeating the Fire Knight. Only the Fire Knight.

Dark Soul/Gregory Packer/ Yamashi/ Daiyamashi/ Fire Knight II

Gingaku’s right hand, who harbours an intense grudge against Yuri. It is later revealed that he is Yuri’s former copilot Gregory Packer, who was marooned in the same accident and blames his former partner for his misfortune. Evolves into a powerful form known as Yamashi later in the fic, becoming Daiyamashi later on.

  • 11th-Hour Ranger: After Proton loses his powers and gets possessed by Gingaku, Gregory takes them up to join the fight. He later passes them back to Proton at the first opportunity.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Whereas Aslan was Lucky’s father, Gregory is Yuri’s best friend turned evil.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Aslan was merely brainwashed into fighting against his own son. While Gregory is being manipulated, he fights of his own free will against Yuri.
  • The Atoner: Becomes this near the end, helping defeat Gingaku and later volunteering to go and help find the displaced human slaves to bring them home.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: Despite his enmity with Yuri making him a much more personal foe and his A God Am I declarations, Gregory is ultimately reduced to nothing when Gingaku comes back.
  • Break the Haughty: When Gingaku reveals that he was only meant as a patsy to ensure the Dark-X was safe enough for Gingaku to use, he goes into a funk.
  • Character Development: After spending most of his appearances gunning for Yuri, he realises that he can’t beat him as he is and upgrades to his stronger Yamashi form. Once he beats Yuri in this state, he decides to move on and destroy his past life, while acquiring all the tools he needs to ascend to godhood.
  • Composite Character: As stated above, he gets Don Armage’s final forms, despite being based on Aslan.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Every fight with Dark Soul ends up being hilariously one sided - for the heroes. This gets reversed when he becomes Yamashi.
  • Evil Counterpart: His Yamashi form is this to the Big Bang Ranger, as both are white-coloured transformations that can use any of their comrades weapons and powers.
  • Evil Former Friend: Is this to Yuri, having been tricked by Coiloga into hating him.
  • Foreshadowing: His civilian clothing is described as being black and red, the colours of both his armoured look and the Fire Knight.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Makes one of these in the final arc, after finding out that Gingaku betrayed him.
  • One-Winged Angel: Dr. Cerebron modifies him so that he can transform into an armoured form known as Yamashi, with similar abilities to the Big Bang Ranger.
    • He later takes this further, bringing every Gingaku member Back from the Dead and merging with them to become the more powerful Daiyamashi.
  • The Power of Hate: This seems to be what drives him to keep fighting with Yuri, despite being outmatched.
  • Unknown Rival: Yuri is unaware he exists for several chapters and doesn’t understand why he hates him for several more.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Was recruited into Gingaku solely to provide Gingaku with the means to drive a being into becoming the ultimate life form and then take that power for himself.
  • Walking Spoiler: Just look at how many spoilered sections are in this part of the page alone.

Diskus/Kota

A warrior working with the real Cha-ChaMari to eliminate the Ranger problem. Is actually Mila’s old friend Kota, having defected to Gingaku.

  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: His relationship with the Green Ranger is entirely original to Cosmic Defenders.
  • Ascended Extra: His counterpart in Kyuranger, Desgon, was a monster of the week. Kota on the other hand is a recurring character.
  • Back from the Dead: In chapter 35, he gets resurrected by the Anima Core’s powers.
  • Brought Down to Normal: Yamashi steals his alien abilities and they get destroyed with his defeat, leaving Kota stuck as a normal humanoid.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Appears in chapter 12 as Mila’s Only Friend at her ninja school.
  • Evil Former Friend: He is to Mila what Gregory is to Yuri: A former friend who was tricked into joining Gingaku.
  • Foil: To Gregory/Dark Soul. Both are former friends turned evil of Rangers. But whereas Gregory turned bad due to a misunderstanding, Kota turned evil due to his own desire to be even for the Fantastic Racism he suffered. And whereas Gregory grew to hate his friend Yuri, Kota retains a (marginally unhealthy) admiration and desire for Mila, the one person who treated him nicely.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Goes off with Mila to restore their ninja school in the finale.

Dr. Cerebron

Tarrant’s creator. Originally creating the Bullroid as a weapon of destruction for Gingaku, he was outraged to discover that his creation had developed sentience and ordered his assistant to terminate the “technical hitch”. Instead, Myron freed the robot and burned down the lab to try and stop Cerebron from continuing his experiments. However, the crazed scientist survived, albeit with his remains kept alive in a total survival sphere, to continue developing the Bullroid models until they are his definition of perfect.

  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: He certainly believes so, which is why his later robots only have a battle computer.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Whereas Kyuranger had Dr. Anton split into a good half and an evil half, Dr. Cerebron is evil from the start.
  • Brain in a Jar: Spends much of the series like this, until the creation of the Neo-Bullroid model, one of which he uses to give himself a body.
  • Dirty Coward: When it seems like he’ll be caught in a fight, he’ll either move to the sidelines or run away. Myron eventually points this out to mock him, spurring him into action.
  • The Evil Genius: Builds most of Gingaku’s technology and upgrades.
  • Lack of Empathy: When his initial creation, the Terrorvore, ravaged a planet and destroyed his population, his only complaint was when the project was ordered shut down by Gingaku for being too uncontrollable.
  • Non-Action Guy: Very much so. The one time he fights, it results in his death.
  • Undying Loyalty: Seems to possess this for Gingaku, to the point of helping to carry on his plan after his death.

Cha-ChaMari

A mass produced assistant that has one copy used by every major figure within Gingaku. The original is Gingaku’s daughter, one of the deadliest warriors in the universe.

  • Affably Evil: The second clone.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: The original Cha-ChaMari has an “anticipation engine” that allows her to predict her opponent’s moves before they can perform them. The Rangers only make headway in fighting her when they employ Confusion Fu.
  • Clone Degeneration: The copies all have different personalities.
  • Composite Character: The third and fourth incarnations of Mardakko are combined into one, due to the Space Squad episode being Adapted Out.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: The Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe clone gets hit by Mila’s Cosmic Energy Strike and falls there. Her counterpart, the formal-speaking Mardakko, gets defeated by a combined finisher from six of the Rangers.
  • Dragon Ascendant: The original tries to become this after Gingaku’s apparent death, declaring herself the Empress. No-one takes her seriously and she dies shortly afterwards.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: The second clone seen is unceremoniously offed by Spectrum.
  • Jerkass: The first Cha-ChaMari is this, being openly rude and insulting to everyone, be they friend or foe.
  • Killed Off for Real: The original orders the cloning program shut down when she finds out about it.
  • Master Actor: The third clone convinces everyone that she is Spectrum’s loyal Dragon.
  • Mook Carryover: The second Cha-ChaMari starts out serving Squideyasu, but passes over to Spectrum before being killed.
  • Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe: The 4th and final clone speaks like this.

Squideyasu

One of Gingaku’s personal eliminators, hailing from the Southern Cross. He has multiple eyes on his body.

  • Affably Evil: Acts incredibly cordial to the Rangers. At least before they actually defeat his plans.
  • Eyes Do Not Belong There: His whole body is covered in them.
  • Eye Scream: Yuri blows up all of his eyes at once.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Squideyasu is normally able to anticipate and avoid any attack launched at him. Cha-ChaMari’s betrayal and shooting of him is something he fails to pick up.
  • Punny Name: He identifies his species as “Octupeye”, a merger of octopus and eye, befitting his large number of eyes.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Despite being the Arc Villain, he allows for the Rangers to gain two new members and informs Myron that his brother is still alive, setting the stage for the next arc to be focused on the latter.

Metaro

The ruler of the Archer Nebula, who gets demoted after the Rangers’ first victory against him. He thus pursues them, seeking revenge.
