Hammond's Gatherers

    Ian Malcolm

    Sarah

Dr. Sarah Harding

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2f359c3e67cc23da425659496ec94603.jpg
"I've worked around predators since I was 20 years old. Lions, jackals, hyenas ... you."

Played By: Julianne Moore

Appearances: The Lost World: Jurassic Park

  • Action Survivor: She can't fight at all, but she somehow survives all the horror in the film.
  • Adaptational Curves: Inverted. In the novel, she's notably muscular, but not in the film.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Has short black hair in the novel.
  • Adaptational Wimp: A highly noticeable example. The novel's version is probably one of the most badass characters in the franchise, surviving being thrown into the water on the way to Isla Sorna, and later feeding the person who threw her to the T. rex. The film version, on the other hand...
  • Brainless Beauty: A bizarre unintentional example. Being played by Julianne Moore she is gorgeous but while the character is supposedly brilliant she carries the Idiot Ball so firmly her actions would have been identical had she been deliberately portrayed as an airhead.
  • Break the Haughty: While not to the same extent as Ludlow, Sarah seems to think she can handle a dinosaur-infested island herself despite the warnings of her boyfriend who she thinks is a worrywart. After having near-death experiences with the T. rexes and the Velociraptors and witnessing the deaths of many people at their claws and teeth, including Eddie, she's left quite traumatized.
  • Captain Obvious: She mostly points out things that happen in the movie.
  • Complaining About Rescues They Don't Like: Although she didn't consider it a rescue.
  • Composite Character: The movie version of her with Dr. Richard Levine. Dr. Levine is described as being a massive pain in the ass by Sarah herself, has no idea how to do fieldwork, and lacks any idea of the consequences of his action. Most of these traits, if not all, is placed onto Sarah which makes it hard for the audience to feel bad for her.
  • Damsel out of Distress: She survived a Stegosaurus attack without needing her colleagues and her boyfriend to come charging to her rescue. Also, see Set a Mook to Kill a Mook below for how she deals with being trapped between two Velociraptors.
  • Fiery Redhead: Spends the majority of the film fighting everybody.
  • Idiot Ball: She's supposed to be a wildlife expert, but she really screws up or misjudges a lot of the dinosaurs' behaviors and ignores every single one of Malcolm's warnings (a guy who was on Isla Nublar when the park broke down) until people start dying by the dozens. She's assuming a bunch of genetically-recreated giant reptiles, many of whom are carnivorous, will behave the same way toward humans that most modern animals have been conditioned to do. Never mind the fact that even modern animals will attack humans when they feel the need. And then there's the moment where she rubs her hand all over a baby Stegosaurus while the baby's parents are within sight. She also walks around with a vest covered in baby T. rex blood, this after she herself has already mentioned what a powerful sense of smell they have, and this leads to the T. rex parents finding the camp after being attracted to the scent of their baby's blood. Worse yet, Roland specifically points out the blood as they're walking, and after directly acknowledging that it came from the baby, she says it's not drying in the humidity. Which should have tipped her off that the rexes could still smell it, since she'd talked about their extremely acute sense of smell earlier, and should have tipped Roland too, since he was there to hear it.
  • Informed Ability: All the characters remind the audience that she's a biologist expert, but outside of casting the infant rex's leg she doesn't show off these skills at all.
  • Jerkass: Mostly Downplayed, but it was kind of a jerk move to criticize Malcolm for being afraid of an island filled with dinosaurs. Considering that he was almost killed by Rexy on Isla Nublar (and the Amoral Attorney less than ten feet from him actually was torn apart), he's got every reason to be scared to death of Isla Sorna.
  • Naïve Animal Lover: She knows nothing about the animals she's studying, or at least nothing that isn't primarily speculation based on fossils. What little she does know she also ignores, placing herself and others in mortal peril.
  • Set a Mook to Kill a Mook: During the Raptor Attack in the middle of the movie, she makes a raptor fall on top of another one; the two dinosaurs then proceed to ignore her and start attacking each other, giving Sarah enough time to escape.
  • Unrelated in the Adaptation: Unlike the book, there's no indication she's related to Gerry Harding, the veterinarian from the first film. Jurassic Park: The Game even gives Gerry a different daughter, Jess.

    Nick

Nick Van Owen

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Van_Owen_Nick_4459.png
"Hammond's check cleared, or I wouldn't be going on this wild goose chase..."

Played By: Vince Vaughn

Appearances: The Lost World: Jurassic Park

Nick: Wildlife, combat, you name it. When I was with Nightline, I was in Rwanda, Chechnya, all over Bosnia. Do some volunteer work for Greenpeace once in a while.
Malcolm: Greenpeace? What drew you there?
Nick: Women. 80 percent female, Greenpeace.

A photographer who accompanied Eddie Carr and Ian Malcolm to Isla Sorna in order to document dinosaurs. He was hand picked by John Hammond because he had done many jobs in combat situations. He was also an active environmentalist and a member of the Earth First! organization.

  • Animal Wrongs Group: A one-man example (if one does not count the rest of his group). Some of the actions he takes over the course of the film can best be described as eco-terrorism. Justified since he is actually a member of "Earth First!" as Tembo says once, a real-life ecological extremist group who are often labeled as eco-terrorists.
  • Badass Pacifist: Never directly kills anything in the film or so much as carries a gun, but outside of throwing a shove at the aggressive Stark, he doesn't do anything.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: The reason he joined a Greenpeace, the women! Subverted as he really does care about animals even though his actions in helping them are pretty stupid.
  • Complaining About Rescues They Don't Like: Doesn't even utter a thank you to Tembo for saving the team and actually sabotages his gun which prevents Tembo from shooting the T. rex that is attacking everyone.
  • Eco-Terrorist: His methods to protect the dinosaurs directly result in human casualties. Granted, he does value human life that isn't antagonistic towards animals or himself. Justified when Tembo remembers him being member of an organization labeled as eco-terrorists.
  • Good Counterpart: He's another Dennis Nedry, only motivated by altruistic environmentalism rather than greed. Like Nedry, he serves as the unforeseeable Spanner in the Works that turns a risky but reasonably well planned and controlled InGen venture into a complete, blood-soaked clusterfuck.
  • Good Is Dumb: He means well, but he accidentally causes the death of his teammate.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Zig-zagged. He argues that the InGen has no right to exploit the dinosaurs, but on the other hand, the dinosaurs are not natural-born animals in a prehistoric environment—they are genetically cloned hybrids that InGen has legal ownership of, thus the company has the lawful right to take possession of them. But as the movie franchise shows, caging them is not going to end well for them or the people around them. It's one of those times where what may be morally right and legally right differ.
  • Karma Houdini: He leaves the film without any punishment for causing most of the deaths in the story.
  • Naïve Animal Lover: He knows about modern animals, but knows next to nothing about dinosaurs. This causes him to take pity on and try to help the baby Tyrannosaurus and leads the parents back to the trailers (though even someone knowledgeable about modern animals should know interfering with a wild animal's infant, even with good intentions, is tremendously stupid). Even Sarah recognized this was a bad move, only helping because she just as much wanted to get it help and let it go as fast as possible.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: In tandem with the villains he's either directly or indirectly responsible for every death in the movie. He brings a baby T. rex to the trailer, attracting the parents which results in the destruction of all their communication equipment and the death of Eddie Carr. Prior to that, his freeing of the dinosaurs InGen had already captured causes them to rampage through the villains' compound and destroy their communications equipment. Roland is quick to point out that the whole "Trapped By Dinosaurs" plot of the film is courtesy of Nick.
  • Papa Wolf: When the predators attack the camp and Ian is separated from the others, Nick does his best alongside Sarah to keep Kelly alive and safe.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: His face seeing the captive rex and Malcolm's indignant look says he really doesn't want anymore to do with this. He's even already back in his seat with a "done with this" look before the scene ends. Probably took his money and left, one can hardly blame him.
  • Stupid Good: He's the guy who thought it'd be a good idea to bring a baby T. rex back to base.
  • A Tragedy of Impulsiveness: His decision to bring the baby T. rex back to the trailer brings it's parents down upon the Gatherer team, resulting in Carr's tragic death.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: He along with Roland Tembo and Ludlow are responsible for unintentionally causing the San Diego Incident, Nick's decision to steal Tembo's bullets resulted in the latter using tranquillisers to bring down the Male Tyrannosaur which in turn allowed Ludlow to capture the dinosaur and bring it to the mainland where it proceeded to rampage through San Diego.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: He abruptly disappears when the film gets to San Diego, with the movie pretty much pretending that he never existed.

    Eddie

Eddie Carr

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Carr_Eddie_4973.png
"Violence and technology: not good bedfellows."

Played By: Richard Schiff

Appearances: The Lost World: Jurassic Park

"If you feel at all qualified, try turning the switch to 'on'."

A field equipment expert sent to Isla Sorna by Hammond.

  • Collateral Damage: Out of himself, Roland, Ludlow, Sarah, and Nick, he has the least involvement with moving the baby T. rex between the two camps and getting it injured, but thanks to the actions of the latter four characters, he ends up being the first one to die when its parents show up.
  • Composite Character: Of the book version of Eddie and "Doc" Thorne.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: While valiantly trying to save his friends, the T.Rex couple unfortunately returns. They proceed to lift him into the air, rip him in half at the waist/legs and devour him. The only silver lining is that he appears to die instantly when one of them first bites into him, so he likely didn't feel much. His counterpart in the novel this film is based upon wasn't half as lucky.
  • Deadpan Snarker: His few lines are always sarcastic quips.
  • The Determinator: Even when under attack from the T. rexes and completely terrified out of his mind, he refuses to stop trying to hold the trailers steady so Ian, Sarah, and Nick can climb to safety, jamming his foot on the gas as he reaches for his Lindstradt Air Rifle and prepares to make a (ultimately his last) stand.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: He's pulled in half and eaten by the T.rexes here versus being torn to pieces by a pack of Velociraptors in the novel.
  • Dying Moment of Awesome: He doesn't take his final moments exactly well, but Eddie does everything he can possibly think of to save the others. Even when the T. rex couple return, he doesn't attempt to run, but instead continues reversing his car to try and prevent the trailers from plummeting over the cliff.
  • Expy: A subverted one of Genarro from the first film. Both of them are soft-spoke, meek-natured, and completely out of place in a wilderness setting and of course they're both the first main/supporting character to die in their respective films, being reduced to Half the Man He Used to Be or less by T.rexes due to a situation directly involving Ian Malcolm. The main difference is that, simply put, Genarro is a Dirty Coward who abandoned two kids to save his hide, resulting in him getting his Just Desserts in the form of an Undignified Death, while Eddie refuses to leave his colleagues' sides in their moment of dangernote  and ends up making a memorable Heroic Sacrifice to ensure their survival.
  • Forgotten Fallen Friend: Averted. Roland thinly implies that Eddie did the rest of them a favor by getting eaten since that means the T. rexes won't stalk the rest of them for food. This prompts Ian to angrily retort that Roland show some respect since Eddie died in the process of saving Ian, Nick, and Sarah.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: He brings all the technical equipment of Hammond's team.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: One of the T. rexes lifts him by the leg out of the car, tosses him in the air, and catches him in its mouth. Then the other chomps down on his lower half, and they rip him apart.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Is so determined to save the group that even as he's being attacked by T. rex, he's still backpedaling in the car to keep the trailer from going over the edge.
  • Hope Spot: When he's being attacked by the rexes, Eddie manages to get his hands on his Lindstradt Air Rifle at one point, only for the next shot to reveal that the rifle's barrel is tangled up in a pile of netting, right before Eddie gets tossed into the air and eaten.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Eddie Carr chastises Ian for banging the satellite phone in an attempt to get it to work. A minute later, while Ian is meeting Nick Van Owen, Eddie is fiddling with the phone and starts banging it. Also counts as a Funny Back Ground Event.
  • Meaningful Name: The mechanic who designed and maintains the expedition's cool off-roaders and trailers? His name is Eddie Carr. Subtle.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Trying to save the lives of his three colleagues ends up costing him his when the T.rex parents return to investigate all the commotion his rescue attempt is making.
  • Reliably Unreliable Guns: The Lindstradt Air Rifle he carries with him and briefly brags about picks the absolute worst time to get its barrel snagged on something in the back of his truck.
  • Only Sane Man: Besides Malcolm; despite being somewhat skeptical about the possibility of living dinosaurs, he's the only one on the research team to think to bring a weapon along. Then again, given the way Sarah and Nick play catch with the Idiot Ball, it's doubtful that they can be trusted with so much as a squirt gun.
  • Punny Name: His last name is Carr. He's the mechanic for the operation, having built some of those massive trailers and a few of the jeeps himself. Think about it.
  • Sacrificial Lion: Is the first one to die and the only hero killed to fool the audience into thinking that not even the other heroes will be safe. Possibly also to provide a reason for the hike, since he could probably have fixed the hunters' communications equipment and saved everyone the trouble. And the violent way in which he is killed serves to demonstrate just how utterly pissed-off the T. rexes are at the puny humans for daring to steal their precious baby.
  • Senseless Sacrifice: Valiant though his efforts were to save the trailer from running over the side of the cliff, he only succeeded in attracting the rexes, who had just left with their infant thinking the threat posed by the humans was over, back to the scene and the trailers ended up falling anyway. Eddie really would have been better off rigging up a harness and winching Sarah, Ian, and Nick up the cliff instead. Plus, as the resident Gadgeteer Genius, he was worth more alive than dead since he probably could have fixed the hunters' communication equipment and negated a long, dangerous hike to the abandoned village.
  • Spaghetti Kiss: He's the spaghetti for the T. rex couple.
  • The Smart Guy: Of Hammond's team.

    Kelly

Kelly Curtis

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Malcolm_Kelly_9413.png

Played By: Vanessa Lee Chester

Appearances: The Lost World: Jurassic Park

The daughter of Ian Malcolm. Though she is often called Kelly Malcolm, her real name (from the novel as well as the movie's credits) is Kelly Curtis.

  • Action Girl: Thanks to her Chekhov's Hobby, see below.
  • Chekhov's Hobby: Her Gymnastic skills, believe it or not.
  • Combat Parkour: Kelly uses her gymnastic skills to kill one of the Velociraptors.
  • Composite Character: Of Kelly Curtis and R.B. "Arby" Benton from the second book.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Spends most of the film freaking out, but when her dad is about to be killed by a raptor, she steels herself long enough to kick it through a wall to its death.
  • Little Miss Badass: When she singlehandedly kills a Velociraptor.
  • Little Stowaway: She sneaks onboard the trip without letting the adults know.
  • The Load: Played with. She does nothing useful at first except for giving the adults smart advice. However, she kills a raptor.
  • Only Sane Man: When the baby T. rex starts crying, she correctly figures out that its parents are going to hear it and tells Ian that they have to get out of there.
  • Parents in Distress: She singlehandedly saves her father from a Velociraptor by kicking it through the wall with her gymnastic skills.
  • Please, Don't Leave Me: When Ian is going to leave to go back to the camp to warn Sarah and Nick that the T. rex parents are coming to get their baby, Kelly spends the better part of a minute trying different variations of "Dad, please, stay here!", probably convinced that he would die if he went back.
Malcolm: I'll be right back. I give you my word.
  • Related in the Adaptation: In the novel she and Arby are Dr. Levine's students and assistants. Here she's Malcolm's daughter.
  • Tears of Fear: When she's trapped in a tent with a T. rex right above her head.
  • Token Black: She is the only black main character in the film and in the entire franchise before Kayla comes along (Arnold, Nash, Barry, and Franklin are supporting characters). Actually a Race Lift as a result of her being a Composite Character of the novel's Kelly and Arby — Kelly was white in the book (and unrelated to Malcolm) while Arby was black.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Singlehandedly dispatches a raptor trying to kill her dad.
  • Villain Killer: She successfully kills a raptor, and is the first human to score a dinosaur kill in the film series.

Dinosaur Spotters

    Enrique

Enrique Cardoso

Played By: Julio Oscar Mechoso

Appearances: Jurassic Park III

"Hey, I'm gonna get you close, my friend, but not too close, eh. You don't want to be eaten."

A Costa Rican boat captain who operated an illegal parasailing trip around Isla Sorna called Dino-Soar.

  • Early-Bird Cameo: When trying to hail the mainland in The Lost World Ian Malcolm raises a woman asking for Enrique.
  • Killed Offscreen: His boat goes through a patch of fog. When it emerges Enrique and his crewmate are gone, the canopy is torn, and there is blood smeared everywhere.
  • Native Guide: He's a local Costa Rican who conducts illegal excursions to Isla Sorna.
  • Venturous Smuggler: He makes his living sneaking people into the restricted area around Isla Sorna so he can give them parasailing tours of the island.
  • What a Piece of Junk: His boat has seen better days; its paint is peeling and the equipment looks old. But it's fast and fully functional.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Exactly what happened to Enrique is a point of contention among fans. It's understood that he dies AND that his death was caused by a dinosaur, but what kind was it? Word of God is that some Pteranodon(s) killed him, but it seems odd that Ben and Eric weren't also attacked when they were high in the air. Another theory is that the Spinosaurus killed him, since it's shown as a powerful swimmer but Enrique was out relatively far from the island and the Spinosaurus mostly hunts on land. Those who didn't like the Pteranodon or Spinosaurus theories also proposed it was a marine reptile such as a Plesiosaurus.

    Alan Grant

    Billy

Billy Brennan

"I don't remember that one being on InGen's list."

Played By: Alessandro Nivola

Appearances: Jurassic Park III

"That was Isla Nublar. This is Isla Sorna — Site B."

A young and overenthusiastic graduate student at Grant's dig site. He accompanies Grant to Isla Sorna and gets stranded on it with him and the Kirbys.

  • Alliterative Name: Billy Brennan.
  • The Atoner: As opposed to Nick van Owen, Billy knows what he did was wrong and caused a death and seeks to make up for it by saving Eric, even if he dies in the process.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Steals eggs from a raptor nest, which makes the raptors go after the humans.
  • Chekhov's Hobby: He mentioned being a proficient paraglider.
  • Disney Death: He's seemingly pecked to death by a pair of Pteranodons but somehow manages to survive.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Subverted, he manages to survive his encounter with the Pteranodons.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: His rationale for stealing the raptor eggs; he believed selling them back on the mainland would help bring some funding to keep his and Alan's paleontological dig going.
  • Informed Ability: He's a supposedly gifted grad student serving with the leading name in paleontology, yet can't identify a dinosaur whose name is literally its most distinctive feature with saurus tagged onto it. He also thinks stealing the young from an animal he's been told has beyond chimpanzee level intelligence is a good idea.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Billy's theft of raptor eggs leads to numerous dangerous situations, ultimately resulting in Udesky's death.
  • Not Quite Dead: Again, seemingly killed by Pteranodons, still alive afterward.
  • Reckless Sidekick: To Dr. Grant. You don't get much more reckless than stealing Velociraptor eggs.
  • Redemption Earns Life: After inadvertently causing Udesky's death, he very nearly kills himself to save Eric, and is seemingly killed by Pteranodons, making it look like a case of Redemption Equals Death, but then he turns out to be alive on the rescue chopper.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: To Nick in The Lost World: Jurassic Park.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Between being a paleontology grad student in general and working with Grant in particular, he should be able to guess what stealing eggs from raptors might mean.
  • A Tragedy of Impulsiveness: He steals Velociraptor eggs, planning to sell them on the mainland in the hopes of getting funding to keep his and Alan's dig site going (clearly not considering the implications of velociraptors getting to the mainland). He even admits he took the eggs on an impulse; as a result, the raptors end up chasing the group down and killing Udesky. When Alan finds out, he wastes no time giving Billy a What the Hell, Hero?, especially after he claims he did it "with the best intentions."
  • Unexplained Recovery: After being supposedly killed by the Pteranodons, Billy turns up alive on the rescue chopper. It isn't explained how he survived the attack, escaped the aviary, made it all the way across the island with his injuries, and got to the rescue chopper before the others.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He steals raptor eggs, inadvertently getting Udesky killed.
Billy: You have to believe me, this was a stupid decision but I did it with the best intentions.
Grant: With the best intentions? Some of the worst things imaginable have been done with the best intentions. You know what, Billy? As far as I'm concerned, you're no better than the people that built this place.

The Kirby Family

    Paul

Paul Kirby

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kirby_paul_5884.jpg
"Ahem... I need change here, it only takes quarters, I think I've got... I've got about ten..."

Played By: William H. Macy

Appearances: Jurassic Park III

"Fine, go ahead and scream and when that Tricikloplots attacks you, don't come crying to me."

The owner of a paint & tile store who poses as a wealthy businessman in order to lure Grant onto Isla Sorna to help the Kirbys search for their son.

  • Bluff the Imposter: Paul is tricked by Billy into revealing that he never climbed K2, like he'd earlier claimed. From there, his lies quickly unravel.
  • Bumbling Dad: To Eric. Paul is a typical suburbanite father; he's well-meaning, but clumsy, lacking in useful experience or knowledge, and is pretty far from an action hero - his son has more survival skills than him. Still, he causes less damage than Amanda.
  • Chekhov's Hobby: He casually remarks to Amanda that he'd taken up swimming. It comes in useful when the group are attacked on the river by the Spinosaurus.
  • Disney Death: He seemingly falls to his death from a crane, but hilariously turns out to be okay.
  • The Everyman: Despite initially posing as a millionaire, he's more of an average Joe and moderate businessman who owns "Kirby Paint and Tile Plus". He has very few skills that are useful when trapped on an island with dinosaurs.
  • First Father Wins: It's heavily implied that he gets back together with Amanda after escaping the island with her and Eric.
  • Formerly Fat: He's lost 25lbs from swimming at the YMCA.
  • Mock Millionaire: He poses as a big-shot rich guy to get Grant to come to Isla Sorna.
  • Only Sane Man: Between him and his ex-wife, he is actually willing to heed Grant’s warnings while on Sorna.
  • Papa Wolf: He might be a Bumbling Dad, but he's still a Dad. He expends enormous resources to find his son, willingly going through absolute hell to save him. This includes hiring mercenaries, tangling with dinosaurs on a hostile island, and being alone for long periods with Amanda.
  • Relationship-Salvaging Disaster: A few brushes with death helps push Amanda and Paul back together.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Paul is just a schlubby, divorced small-business owner. By the end, he's taken on a Spinosaurus and survived.
  • Working with the Ex: He's actually divorced from Amanda, despite them putting up a pretense when meeting Alan. They still snipe and bicker with each other; Amanda is slightly more vitriolic than him, however.

    Amanda

Amanda Kirby

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kirby_amanda_4175.jpg
"This is how you make dinosaurs?"

Played By: Téa Leoni

Appearances: Jurassic Park III

"We're not leaving without our son."

Paul's ex-wife who accompanies the group to Site B, feeling guilty for having lost Eric and Ben.

  • Anger Born of Worry:She's rather snarky and somewhat unpleasant to be around but it's completely due to her son being missing on a dinosaur-infested island for eight weeks.
  • Brainless Beauty: She's certainly not unattractive. She's also not overly burdened with intelligence or common sense.
  • Butt-Monkey: Through the course of the movie, she is strapped face-to-face to the rotting corpse of her ex-boyfriend, hanged upside down on a tree with two ferocious raptors lunging inches below, clawed by the Spinosaurus and almost drowns. Finally, when all the heroes sans Billy are cornered by the raptors, she is the one accused by the alpha of stealing their eggs, shifting the pack's attention to her.
  • Dumb Blonde: Not in a ditzy way, more like a Too Dumb to Live kinda way. A conversation she has with Paul suggests that she's been making dumb and reckless decisions for a while now, such as totaling 3 cars in 3 yearsnote . Also she uses a megaphone when she and the search party land on Isla Sorna (to lure in Ben and Eric), loud enough for dangerous and aggressive dinosaurs to hear it.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: She entrusts her son's safety with her Manchild boyfriend who then takes him on an illegal parasailing tour of Isla Sorna.
  • Hysterical Woman: She's forever shrieking and blindly running until one of the men calm her down.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: For much of the film. She's irritable, short-tempered, snippy, and ignores sensible advice in favor of blundering into danger. However, her motivations are largely sympathetic considering she just wants to save her son.
  • Mama Bear: For Eric. Hey, she was willing to enter the island that she's been informed is swarming with dangerous animals for his sake, so that's got to mean something. Plus, she stomachs being around her ex-husband.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Her use of a megaphone to try and find Eric leads to the Spinosaurus finding the group incredibly soon after reaching Site B. This in turn leads directly to Cooper and Nash's deaths as well as the group being stranded due to their plane crashing.
  • No Sympathy: She never mourns the loss of her boyfriend, Ben, after they discover his remains. In fact she never mentions him again at all after that. Justified in that her son is still on the island and finding him (and surviving) takes priority, and the whole mess was really Ben's fault to begin with!
  • Relationship-Salvaging Disaster: A few brushes with death helps push Amanda and Paul back together.
  • Screaming Woman: It doesn't take long for her constant screaming to drive Alan up the wall, and Paul chastises her for potentially attracting predators with her incessant shrieking.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Slightly. By the climax, she's able to look a Velociraptor straight in the eyes and hand over their eggs without a peep. She's visibly terrified, but at least she isn't screaming.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: It was her agreeing to let her boyfriend take her son on parasailing trip to Sorna that caused Eric to become stranded on Site B in the first place. She left the Aviary open leading to the Pteranodons to break free. According to the tie in websites for Jurassic World, Vic Hoskins was promoted and hired to work on Isla Nublar because Masrani liked how he and his team took care of the Pteranodons after they reached the mainland, which led to Hoskins and his team to make a deal with Henry Wu to create weaponized dinosaurs such as the Indominus rex. Had Amanda Kirby closed the Aviary, Hoskins would've likely not been hired to work on Nublar, he would've likely not meet Wu, the I. rex could've been made less dangerous (or not been made at all) and many lives would not have been lost.
  • Working with the Ex: She's actually divorced from Paul, despite them putting up a pretence when meeting Alan.

"The closer you get to the water the bigger things get."

Played By: Trevor Morgan

Appearances: Jurassic Park III

"I read both of your books. I liked the first one more. Before you were on the island. You liked dinosaurs back then."

The 12-year-old son of Paul and Amanda who ends up stranded on Site B for eight weeks, and must fend for himself.

  • Action Survivor: He survived a crash that killed his mother's boyfriend and spent the next 8 weeks surviving on an island of dangerous animals completely alone.
  • Badass Bookworm: If his comments about reading both Alan and Ian’s books are any indication, he is also very resourceful and was able to survive alone for two months on an island inhabited by dinosaurs, an accomplishment that nobody else in the franchise can boast.
  • Giving Them the Strip: He abandons his jacket to escape a swarm of baby Pteranodons. Subverted because it works for about half a second before they go after him again. Plus they can fly.
  • Noodle Incident: How he got the T. rex urine is never explained in the film or in the young adult book that tells of his 8 weeks on the island, Survivor. Seeing as how the book is written from his point of view its possible he left some of the more embarrassing situations out.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: He's very practical for a kid his age, understandable considering he had to dodge dinos for over eight weeks. This makes him the only useful member of the Kirby family for much of the film.

"Nothing to worry about, sir. It's gonna be a walk in the park."

Played By: Michael Jeter

Appearances: Jurassic Park III

"If we split up, I'm going with you guys."

A meek but sardonic mercenary "booking agent" who travels with his two associates to the island when the man who was supposed to go falls ill.

  • The Alleged Expert: His first couple of scenes with the rest of the mercenaries have you believe he may be more than meets the eye (after all, he's the apparent leader, taking calls and all). In reality, he's completely useless in combat (he's the outfit's travel agent) and is the last of the mercs to die by sheer dumb luck.
  • Butt-Monkey: Nothing good happens to Udesky. He's trapped on an island full of deadly animals with a very annoying couple, gets tortured and killed by the raptors, and he isn't even a real mercenary. He wasn't even meant to be here today!
  • Collateral Damage: Billy stealing Velociraptor eggs for profit ultimately leads to Udesky being tortured and used for bait by the adults to draw out the other humans in the hopes of getting their unhatched offspring back. When this fails, one of the raptors brutally snuffs out his life with a Neck Snap.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: The raptors cripple him and leave him to lie in agony as bait to lure out the protagonists. When they realise the humans didn't fall for their little trap, they snap his neck.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He's one of the more sarcastic characters; it's the only way to stay sane around the Kirbys.
  • Dirty Coward: Along with Nash, he's all for abandoning Cooper to his fate, even stating that "Coop's a professional. He can handle himself." Granted, he and Nash were trying to save four other people besides themselves so this is nowhere near Genarro's level of cowardice.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: Well he's not exactly dumb but he's not a real mercenary (actually he's just their booking agent and is filling in last-minute for one of them) and isn't exactly equipped for survival situations. Nonetheless, when the Kirbys turn to him for advice after Grant makes clear his intentions to head for the beach and not help look for Eric, he suggests they keep searching for their son...in the direction that Grant and Billy are headed so that the group stays together. The Kirbys wisely take him up on it.
  • Exact Words: Not himself, but how the Kirbys interpreted some of his advice. He told them they needed someone who had been on the island before in order for them to be able to search for Eric (and avoid the dinosaurs). He did not tell them to lie to and trick someone into coming to the island and effectively end up kidnapping them. When he finds out about this, he is not happy. For bonus points, they didn't check their facts, and mistook Grant's experience on Isla Nublar for him being on Isla Sorna before.
  • Everyone Has Standards: He's rather disappointed when Paul reveals he and his wife essentially kidnapped Dr. Grant to come along with them.
  • Forgotten Fallen Friend: Grant never asks what happened to him or even notices his absence after he reunites with the group. He does in the junior novelization, though, but that's only because the book is told mostly from Grant's P.O.V. Consequently, the scene where Udesky dies isn't in it and so the reader has to learn of it by having Grant ask where he is and be told about the raptors' trap.
  • Idiot Ball: Alan Grant has made clear, repeatedly and on national news, that he was not part of the mess regarding Isla Sorna in any way, shape or form. The Lost World (and thus this film) also don't make clear if the public knows about Isla Nublar (although Grant's lines implies that they do). Regardless, Udesky surely did not do his research when he told the Kirby family to poach Grant to guide them on Sorna. When Grant makes clear that he was not on this island before, Udesky's answer is a befuddled:
Udesky: You're telling me there's two islands with dinosaurs?
  • Last-Name Basis: Always referred to by his surname.
  • Mauve Shirt: Udesky exists largely to be killed to re-establish the raptors as a genuine threat, and dies accordingly. He gets more character than Cooper or Nash, however.
  • Neck Snap: His fate at the hands of the raptors.
  • Nice Guy: Udesky is a rather polite man and isn't quite a ruthless mercenary. He reveals he wasn't supposed to go along as he's more like the booking agent of the small mercenary outfit and was filling in for another unseen mercenary who called in sick.
  • Only Sane Man: Mixed with Unfazed Everyman.
  • Outside-Context Problem: For him regarding the island, at least. He brought his team loaded for bear, ditched unnecessary gear as necessary (he had multiple rifle magazines in his vest when they went to salvage from the plane and ditched them after finding the rifle bent to uselessness), helped Mr. Kirby get his pack on properly, and readily endorsed Grant (and Billy) as the best possible people to keep the party alive. For all that he says he's closer to a booking agent than an actual mercenary, he knows his stuff, but underestimated the necessary safeguards for a place like Isla Sorna.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Comes to view being with the noisy, constantly bickering Kirbys as this. At one point, he tells Billy and Grant that he's going with them if the group gets split up. Sadly, the exact opposite of this happens and gets him killed. Ironically, it's Billy's idiocy in particular that's responsible for his demise.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: To Eddie in The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Perhaps most significantly, both characters end up being Collateral Damage because someone else swiped a predatory dinosaur's young and incurred the parents' wrath.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Grant is part of the expedition because he told the Kirbys to find someone who had been on the island to help as a guide. The following discussion after this fact is revealed makes clear that, if the public knows about Isla Sorna and Isla Nublar (as in, they are two entirely different islands within the same chain that have dinosaurs), Udesky (and maybe the Kirbys, although with them it's more ambiguous) is not one of them.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: The raptors kill him after their ploy to lure out the other humans using him as bait falls through.

    Cooper

Cooper

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/b4153e567eb3a7d18dd69fc395d769d1.jpg

Played By: John Diehl

Appearances: Jurassic Park III

A tough and quiet mercenary.

  • Alas Poor Jerkass: He's unpleasant, but not a villain. It's also hard not to feel sorry for the poor guy, betrayed by his cowardly friend and begging to be rescued as death approaches.
  • Better to Die than Be Killed: Played with. When it becomes clear that Nash isn't going to stop for him, he just stands there in its path knowing he's going to be mowed down and probably choosing to go out that way rather than suffer whatever the Spinosaurus has in store for him. The Spinosaurus snaps him up instead, however.
  • Big "NO!": His last word.
  • Cool Shades: He's seen sporting them on the plane, adding to his stoical demeanour. He notably lacks them after trying to escape the Spinosaurus.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Cooper has a rather sardonic sense of humor, as we find out on the plane:
Udesky: Cooper! If you see anything, yell up!
Cooper: Naw, I thought I'd keep it to myself!
    • And:
Billy: How do you know the Kirbys?
    Cooper: Through our church.
  • Forgotten Fallen Friend: He dies, not even his friends mourn. Although in Nash's case, he didn't get much of a chance to do so before being reunited with Cooper
  • Jerkass: He's needlessly sarcastic, seems pretty trigger-happy and knocks out Grant despite there being little need to. Grant was clearly trying to warn them that the island is filled with giant carnivorous dinosaurs, and ignoring Grant helped lead to his own death.
  • Last-Name Basis: He's only referred to by his last name and we never learn his first name.
  • Not So Stoic: Most of the time, he has a bored expression and a dry wit. When the Spinosaurus comes for him, his tough guy exterior melts away.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: His role is the smallest of the main cast, but him unintentionally leading the Spinosaurus to the runway causes the plane to crash, which leads to the rest of the cast getting stranded on the island.
  • Tears of Fear: When trying to escape the Spinosaurus, he jumps in the path of the plane, begging them to stop and weeping when it's clear they won't.
  • Those Two Guys: With his pal Nash, who he calls 'Nashie'.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Had he not led the Spinosaurus to the runway, the plane wouldn't have crashed.
  • The Worf Effect: After establishing himself as rather formidable, having knocked out Grant, he's swiftly eaten by the Spinosaurus.
  • The World's Expert (on Getting Killed): Cooper is supposedly a highly recommended and experienced mercenary. He's the first mercenary to be killed, not long after Udesky claims that, 'Cooper's a professional. He can handle himself'.

    Nash

M.B. Nash

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/9fc78574_8c3c_4465_a5c2_0a3c00029088.jpeg

Played By: Bruce A Young

Appearances: Jurassic Park III

Kirby's mercenary pilot.

  • Ace Pilot: His role in the mercenary group.
  • Break the Haughty: Initially presented as a tough badass mercenary but completely loses his nerve after encountering the Spinosaurus.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: The Spinosaurus could have killed him the moment it got its jaws on him. Instead it chose to drop him to the ground, stomp on his back and bit off his head. If he was lucky, the immobilizing stomp killed him before it could start biting.
  • Dirty Coward: In his hurry to flee the island, Nash leaves Cooper to die. Still, he was trying to save the lives of the people who did make it back to the plane besides himself, so it's not nearly as bad as Genarro's example from the first film. Even when the Spinosaurus grabbed him by the leg, the other people did try to oblige to his pleas to save him by pulling him away, only for their efforts to fall flat as the dinosaur's pull was too strong for them.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: Begs and pleads for the others to save him as the Spinosaurus drags him from the plane and continues babbling until it drops him.
  • Hope Spot: Just when it looks like he's going to escape by crawling into some nearby foliage, the Spinosaurus pins him with its foot and delivers a killing bite.''
  • Jerkass Has a Point: He tells himself that he can't stop the plane for Cooper, presumably to settle his conscience as he's leaving his comrade to die to the Spinosaurus. As cowardly as this is, it could be argued that he'd already had the plane up to launch speed by that point and that he had five other lives as well as his own that he was trying to save.
  • Just Desserts: He's not a villain exactly, but his Dirty Coward tendencies mean that his death feels a little deserved.
  • Last-Name Basis: Always referred to by his surname.
  • Off with His Head!: The Spinosaurus bit his head off and likely even ate it.
  • Only Known by Initials: We never learn what his initials stand for.
  • Those Two Guys: With Cooper, who even affectionately calls him "Nashie".
  • Token Minority: He's the only member of the main cast who's African-American. Though given how little screen time he had, he might not even qualify as being in the main cast.
  • With Friends Like These...: Towards Cooper. He straight up abandons him in his time of need, leaving him to fend for himself. Then again, his other option was to risk death for himself and five other people by waiting for Cooper to get on the plane while a dinosaur that is more than capable of ripping it to shreds note  is approaching.

The Eco-Tourists (Unmarked Spoilers!)

    Mitchell

Mitchell

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/image_3424.png

Voiced By: Bradley Whitford

Appearances: Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous

A so-called eco-tourist dedicated to taking pictures of dinosaurs along with his wife.

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Dark example; he briefly chuckles at Tiff for getting shocked by an electrical fence during a nasty argument. Since he's normally the less cruel of the two, it might come off as an In-Universe Catharsis moment.
  • A Lighter Shade of Black: He's a poacher looking to hunt dinosaurs for his own glory, but he prefers the carrot to the stick (Offering the kids to be taken back to the mainland for their cooperation) and is at first reluctant to hurt children compared to his wife's sadism.
  • A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing: Poses as an eco-tourist along with his wife, though really ends up being big-game hunters wanting to hunt dinosaurs for their own gain.
  • Affably Evil: Even after he exposes his true colors, he still remains reasonable, polite, and patient towards the kids especially Darius.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: He may be partially responsible for his own demise and ultimately hardened himself to potentially murder children, but unlike his monstrous wife, his last moments involved being suddenly abandoned by the woman he loved and begging her to come back while trapped before Rexy devours him. Either way, his end was rather pitiful.
  • Anti-Villain: While Mitch is willing to kill the dinosaurs as trophies, he at least gave the kids the chance to be taken back to the mainland in exchange for their cooperation along with being a little reluctant to hurt them, unlike his wife. He also genuinely likes Darius, whom he bonded with the most even after revealing his true color and tries to be reasonable to him. While his death is deserved, it is somewhat treated with slight sympathy due to his wife ditching him to be eaten by the T. rex.
  • Arc Villain: One of the two main antagonists for Season 2, alongside Tiffany.
  • Beauty Is Bad: He's more conventionally attractive than Hap and is revealed as a poacher.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: He wants to see the "cranial facial biting action" of a T. rex, and that's the last thing he sees when Rexy finds and eats him.
  • Big Damn Heroes: He, Tiff, and Hap suddenly appear to save the kids from the Ceratosaurus. Subverted in that their long-term intentions aren't so noble after all, although this is somewhat downplayed with Hap.
  • The Cameo: Photographs of him and Tiff can be seen at the start of Season 4 while Sammy and Yaz are trying to catch the stowaway compy.
  • Discretion Shot: Mitch isn't eaten onscreen, but in a later shot, the rope he was hanging from is cut with Mitch nowhere to be seen.
  • Doomed by Canon: Once he places his sight on Blue with his gun, it's all but clear that he and Tiff will fail their agenda since Blue will turn up alive in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom years later.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: He wasn't expecting Tiff to just abandon him to save her own hide, leaving him at the mercy of the T. rex.
  • Evil Has a Bad Sense of Humor: He takes a moment to chuckle at Tiff's getting zapped by an electrical fence. Then again, given what a bitch she is plus they were in the middle of a spat...
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: What kills him is being caught in his own snare, leaving him defenseless when Rexy shows up.
  • Just Desserts: After he is revealed to be a big game Hunter who illegally came to Isla Nublar to shoot the dinosaurs, holds the kids hostage and sadistically electrocutes Rexy using a cattle prod when she becomes pinned between two pillars on Mainstreet, he ends up getting caught in one of his own traps and is eaten by Rexy.
  • Knight of Cerebus: At least the predatory dinos are just that; predatory animals trying to feed themselves in a newly opened environment. Mitch and Tiff, by contrast, are intrusive greedy humans who hunt the dinosaurs for trophies and are willing to potentially murder children to get what they want (Although Mitch is a little more hesitant), making Season 2 a darker struggle for survival.
  • Mythology Gag: He's a downplayed Expy of Roland Tembo by way of being a big-game hunter who is looking to boost his own ego and trophy room. Like Tembo, he chooses to help the kids although they oppose what he is doing once they discover it, although he later chooses bagging dinosaurs over getting the kids to safety, unlike Tembo. Also unlike Tembo — and more in line with Ken Wheatley, he's not just after a T. rex and is much crueler in his methods, setting snares to trap his quarry instead of tracking it down. This gets him killed.
  • The Nicknamer: He calls Darius "D" and calls his wife "Babe". Tiff reveals later that she hates the name.
  • No Full Name Given: His surname is never revealed.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: He claims that he wants to hunt dinosaurs to preserve their legacy since Isla Nublar will soon be sealed off and abandoned. While he does genuinely admire them, it's pretty clear that he's just lying to Darius (and possibly himself) and that his own glory is just the end goal here.
  • Parental Substitute: During their argument, Brooklynn accuses Darius of seeing Mitch as one. Which makes it much painful and heartbreaking when Darius saw his true colors.
  • The Reveal: Darius finds who Mitch really is upon going to his tent and finding a severed Sinoceratops head.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Isn't as passionate about it as his wife, but still seems willing to hurt the kids to get what he wants.

    Tiffany

Tiffany

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/73b9ffe6_c7b9_46fc_8372_586abf918b65.jpeg

Voiced By: Stephanie Beatriz

Appearances: Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous

A so-called eco-tourist dedicated to taking pictures of dinosaurs along with her husband.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Known as just 'Babe' by her husband, though she later reveals that she always hated that name.
  • Arc Villain: Like Mitch, she's one of the two main antagonists of Season 2.
  • Ax-Crazy: Once her true colors are revealed, she isn't shy about being willing to hurt the kids if they get in her way. When Darius and Sammy escape with their guns, she's much more eager than her husband to use the electric prods on them, complete with Slasher Smile.
  • Beauty Is Bad: Her cruelty is disgustingly contrasted by her admittedly not half bad appearance. It's really the only thing remotely resembling a positive quality she has.
  • Big Damn Heroes: She, Mitch, and Hap make a surprise appearance to save the kids from the Ceratosaurus. Subverted in that their long-term intentions aren't so noble after all, although this is somewhat downplayed with Hap.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Appears to be a kind-hearted person who cares nothing more than about the campers' safety, but it turns out that it's all a facade. Her real personality is much more malicious than Mitch's and is even willing to try to hurt the kids. A photograph of them in Season 4 implies that she didn't care as much for her husband as he did for her.
  • The Cameo: Photographs of her and Mitch appear at the start of Season 4 when Sammy and Yaz are trying to catch the stowaway compy.
  • Child Hater: Once she shows her true color, she will often voice her dislike of children to her husband remarking that she is glad they never had kids.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: In the end, even her husband Mitch was betrayed by her.
  • Dirty Coward: Instead of staying to help her husband, Tiff takes the boat keys from him and leaves him to get eaten by Rexy.
  • Discretion Shot: When Chaos and Limbo surprise her on the ferry, the camera cuts to an afar shot of the boat, but the sound of glass breaking and Tiffany's screams leave little doubt about what happens.
  • Eviler than Thou: Tiff by herself is shown to be unsettlingly depraved and a much worse person than Mitch, taking visible pleasure in doing harm unto children and culminating in ditching her husband to be eaten by the Tyrannosaurus while he's caught in a trap.
  • Expy: She closely resembles Amanda Kirby from Jurassic Park III due to her short hair and her clothes. Like Amanda, she passes herself off as a curious eco-tourist in order to hide her ulterior motives. Unlike Amanda, she apparently hates kids and is glad she never had any. Given Amanda Kirby's generally negative reception among the fanbase and Tiff's extremely unpleasant nature, she seems to be an intended critique of her.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Unlike her husband, who is genuinely Affably Evil, her kind personality is merely a mask hiding a child-hating, egotistical psychopath.
  • Foil: To Alan Grant, of all people. He starts the original movie hating children due to conventional reasons but grows out of it after being around Lex and Tim. Tiff by contrast faked having sympathy for the campers' situation and is in fact a bonafide Child Hater for reasons that are never explained. Grant's admiration for dinosaurs goes to finding even their gorier traits fascinating whereas Tiff could care less and only sees them as trophies, becoming terrified when confronted with mortal danger. By the third film, Grant still remains a good friend of his ex, plus her husband and their son. Tiff, by contrast, constantly bickers with her husband to the point she holds a grudge for making her spent time with their families on their last holiday, contesting that Mitch's mother has never liked her.
  • Hate Sink: Unlike her Affably Evil husband, once she and Mitch show that they aren't really who they are, she shows herself as a selfish, sadistic, child-hating psychopath with absolutely no redeeming qualities. It's clear she was meant to be hated, and viewers likely won't be feeling any sympathy for her when she gets eaten by Chaos and Limbo.
  • Jerkass: She is very rude and impatient even to her husband. Hell, she wouldn't even kiss him back during an African hunting trip if a photo in their yacht bedroom is to be believed.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: We hate to admit it, but she spells out to Darius and Brooklynn that the feel-good moment they're currently sharing should come after they've neutralized the threat. She and Mitch used it to reclaim her gun.
  • Just Desserts: She along with Mitch are revealed to be trophy hunters who illegally came on Isla Nublar to shoot the dinosaurs, threaten the kids when they try to stop them and take Sammy and Darius hostage and shoots Grim to make herself feel good, she ends up getting killed by Chaos and Limbo before she can escape the island.
  • Knight of Cerebus: At least the predatory dinos are just that; predatory animals trying to feed themselves in a newly opened environment. Mitch and Tiff, by contrast, are intrusive greedy humans who hunt the dinosaurs for trophies and are willing to potentially murder children to get what they want, making Season 2 a darker struggle for survival.
  • Laser-Guided Karma:
    • Tiff keeps threatening the kids with an electric prod, all with a smile on her face. Later she gets zapped by an electric fence when Brooklynn turns the park's power back on. Even Mitch got a small laugh out of it.
    • Tiff shoots Grim, one of the Baryonyxes, only for Chaos and Limbo to appear to take revenge and kill her.
  • No Full Name Given: We never hear her last name.
  • Never My Fault: She abandons her husband to the T. rex to save her own skin... and blames the kids for ruining her marriage.
  • Obnoxious In-Laws: She gets on Mitch for making them spend a vacation at his parents' home, contesting that his mother has never liked her. How much this has to do with her personality is anyone's guess.
  • Oh, Crap!: She has this when Chaos and Limbo jump aboard her boat and prepare to kill her. The ensuing scream while this happens offscreen shows.
  • Psychopathic Womanchild: Despite being an adult, she acts akin to an amateur teenager on her first safari tour, complaining about the bugs and getting whiny when her custom-made gun gets crushed. She's also the most sadistic of the three adults in Season 2.
  • Sadist: She's all too eager to use an electric prod to hurt Darius and Sammy for misleading them, even when Mitch wants to use diplomacy first. And she kills Grim just to make herself feel better.
  • The Sociopath: She's a selfish, sadistic woman who loves hunting (both for the thrill and the trophies) and is willing to hurt anyone in her way, including children. She is capable of maintaining a kindly façade, and her love for her husband proves to be fake as she abandons him to the T. rex, and simply laments that her marriage is ruined... along with her cherished gun. The cherry on top would be her smarmy smirk upon realizing that the "brats" she abandoned would have virtually no salvation on the island. The woman is a monster.
  • Toxic Friend Influence: Inferred that Mitch wouldn't be so bad, if not more amiable if it wasn't for Tiff's constant demanding and hateful behavior. It's notable that she's the one to ultimately convince him to stop negotiating with Darius and use the nuclear option.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Undergoes this as the campers keep interfering with "[her] vacation", starting with when she shocked herself on an electric fence.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Unlike her husband who is a little more reluctant, Tiff has no qualms about trying to hurt or even kill the kids. She straight-up tells Darius that she hopes that they all rot on the island.

    Hap

Hap

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/image_6667.jpeg

Voiced By: Angus Sampson

Appearances: Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous

A mercenary hired by Mitch and Tiff to help track dinosaurs.

  • Big Damn Heroes: He, Mitch, and Tiff suddenly appear to save the kids from the Ceratosaurus. Also again when he decides to stay to fight the Baryonxes so Brooklynn and Kenji can get away.
  • Death Glare: Gives one to Brooklynn for being nosy.
  • Expy: Of Roland from The Lost World: Jurassic Park, both seem antagonistic but have a good heart.
    • He also closely resembles Robert Muldoon in appearance and personality and dies in a similar fashion, protecting other characters from predators that don't hunt alone.
    • His manner of death is also similar to Eddie Carr, being torn apart by large carnivores trying to help others.
    • He also bears a slight resemblance to Jeremy Wade with the accent to match.
  • Everybody Has Standards: He's fine with taking Mitch and Tiff to hunt dinosaurs on a restricted island and it's heavily implied he's a professional poacher, but threatening children is way over the line.
  • Good All Along: Brooklynn thought he was the shadiest of his group, but it turns out to not be true. He's in fact the only one to think that getting the group of kids off the island should be a priority unlike Mitch and Tiff.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Hap willingly stays behind to fight Chaos, Grim, and Limbo in order to give Brooklynn and Kenji a chance to escape.
  • Hired Guns: One for Mitch and Tiff. Seems quite an experienced one at that, though as it turns out Hap isn't much help to Mitch and Tiffany because of course while an accomplished hunter, he wouldn't have any experience hunting dinosaurs.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: It isn't clear if Hap is part of his first name, last name, or merely a nickname.
  • Red Herring: When first introduced, he was the one suspected by Brooklynn to be hiding something. However, despite his gruff exterior, he was a genuinely nice guy and was the only member of his group who actually cared about the kids.
  • The Stoic: Rebukes all Brooklynn's attempts to be friendly and is quite emotionless. His façade cracks a little when he finally reveals the truth to the kids and even tries to be friendly with Brooklynn, though she brushes it off.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: It's implied that Mitch and Tiff have no need of him anymore when they decide to have Darius show them the watering hole. While neither ever learns of Hap's death before their own ends, it's doubtful even Mitch would've shown much sadness for him.

Played By: Toby Jones

Appearances: Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

An auctioneer host at Lockwood Estate who sells the Isla Nublar dinosaurs for profit.

  • Auction of Evil: He arranges and presides over an auction of dinosaurs. The dinosaurs are mistreated and callously treated as objects, some of the bidders are rich criminals and the auction is organized by a Corrupt Corporate Executive who wants to fund research on dinosaur DNA to create living weapons for war.
  • Deadpan Snarker: When the dinosaurs are a day late, he snarks to Mills, "Am I supposed to sell these dinosaurs?", indicating the sculptures in Lockwood's house.
  • Dirty Coward: Downplayed. He has no problem pulling a woman out of her hiding place in an elevator, but to be fair, he did so because he was trying to access the button panel to close the elevator.
  • Don't Celebrate Just Yet: He and several people get into an elevator and the doors shut just before the Indoraptor would've gotten in. Everyone breathes a sigh of relief and laughs. Then the doors open again, and the Indoraptor slaughters them all.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He's a pleasant and mildly hammy auctioneer who politely greets his guests, but he's just being a good salesman. In reality, he's a smug, disdainful, and impatient man.
  • Fiction 500: He initially sneers at Mills' boasts about how much the dinosaurs are worth, deeming them a slow weekday's worth of profits where he works.note
  • Greed: The Indoraptor is just a prototype and initially not for sale, but it proves so impressive that when the guests start bidding, he agrees to sell (with Mills' permission and despite Wu's protests).
  • Just Desserts: The Indoraptor turns on him after Wheatley.
  • Karmic Death: Eversoll is killed by one of the creatures he was illegally selling to dangerous criminals.
  • Oh, Crap!: He breathes a sigh of relief when he manages to outwit the Indoraptor and secure himself inside an elevator, only for the Indoraptor to accidentally disable the locks with a swipe of his tail. His expression when the doors open is one of mute, unmoving horror.

Appearances: Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

A Russian arms dealer.

  • Arms Dealer: The International Arms Merchant brand.
  • Husky Russkie: He's a large, scowling criminal.
  • Karma Houdini: Manages to flee the auction when Stiggy is let loose, and he most likely bought a few dinos as well (though whether or not this is actually the case has yet to be confirmed or denied).

Families and Friends of Visitors

    Ben

Ben Hildebrand

Played By: Mark Harelik

Appearances: Jurassic Park III

"Make sure you get as close as you can! I'll give you something extra if you make it a good trip!"

Amanda's boyfriend. He takes Eric on an illegal parasailing tour of Isla Sorna which leads to both of them being trapped on the island.

  • Asshole Victim: Downplayed. While he's not mean or rude he did bring his girlfriend's young son on an illegal outing to Isla Sorna, so it's difficult to feel much sympathy for him.
  • Betty and Veronica. He is the Veronica to Paul's Betty. He is impulsive and adventurous while Paul is pragmatic and unexciting. However, his adventurous nature leads to his demise and results in Eric being stranded on an island full of dinosaurs while Paul's cautious nature allows him to not only survive Isla Sorna but to win back his family as well.
  • Body Horror: There's really not much left of the guy when they find him.
  • Camera Fiend: He brings along a camcorder to document his parasailing trip. Later when the rescue party finds it, the footage he recorded confirms that he and Eric were alive when they landed on the island.
  • Death of the Hypotenuse: He dies early in the film which spares Amanda the bother of having to break up with him.
  • Decoy Protagonist: The opening scene makes it seem like he'll be one of the main leads. One could even mistake him to be Eric's father (though he may have been something of a step-dad to him). The next time we see him, he's a corpse.
  • Flat Character: He's Amanda's boyfriend who makes reckless decisions and that's pretty much it. His background, where he's from, what he does for a living, how he and Amanda met, or even just how long he and Amanda have been dating are left unexplored.
  • Forgotten Fallen Friend: Despite being Amanda's boyfriend, she isn't overly concerned that he met a horrible fate. She screams when she sees his corpse, but that's her default reaction anyway. She then tells Paul she's not upset about Ben, but about her son, who's still missing. Justified in that any good parent is going to care more about their child than their short-term lover. Eric also doesn't seem to care much about his death, but he's had eight weeks to process it, and has more immediate problems in trying to survive Isla Sorna.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: When they find his corpse he's missing his legs.
  • Hawaiian-Shirted Tourist: He wears a Hawaiian shirt, knee length shorts, and sandals while on his vacation to Costa Rica.
  • Killed Offscreen: We never see how exactly he meets his end.
  • Manchild: He's a middle-aged man who acts more like a teenager on Spring Break. He's only concerned with exciting activites and never considers the dangers or consequences of them.
  • Nerves of Steel: When the boat crew is killed he does not panic and his quick thinking allows him and Eric to keep from crashing. When they land on the island he sounds calm and confident even though they are trapped on a restricted island populated by dinosaurs.
  • Nice Guy: Despite making really dumb decisions, he does seem to be a genuinely good person who does care about his girlfriend's son's safety.
  • Noodle Incident: We never find out how he dies, either from injuries or if a dinosaur killed him.
  • Parachute in a Tree: Possibly a contributing factor to his death. When the parasail he is riding comes down to Earth it becomes entangled in a tree, leaving him hanging in his harness above the forest floor. When the rescue party finds the parasail his remains are still strapped in the harness and hanging in the air.
  • Parent with New Paramour: Amanda started dating him after she divorced Paul. Ben and her son, Eric, seem to get along very well with each other. This is probably because Ben takes him on exciting outings that Paul would never consider going on.
  • Peekaboo Corpse: Say hi to your boyfriend, Amanda.
  • Romantic False Lead: Amanda started dating him after her divorce from Paul. They seem to be serious; they go on an international vacation together and she trusts him to take her son parasailing. It seems she was originally attracted to him because he was more exciting than Paul was but by the end of the film she's gotten over him and is rekindling her relationship with the more reliable Paul.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He only has less than five minutes of screentime but his ill-fated trip to Isla Sorna is what kicks off the films plot.
  • Thrill Seeker: He doesn't just go parasailing while on vacation, he goes on an illegal parasailing trip to an island full of dinosaurs.
  • Too Dumb to Live: He takes an illegal parasailing trip to an island crawling with man-eating dinosaurs.
  • What Could Possibly Go Wrong??: In a series of terrible decision makers, Ben is a special case. To show his girlfriend's son a good time, he contacts an illegal tourist operation, breaks international law, flies halfway across the world and brings him to one of the single most dangerous places on Earth, presumably to spend an hour paragliding.

    Mark

Mark Degler

Played By: Taylor Nichols

Appearances: Jurassic Park III | Jurassic World Dominionnote

Ellie's husband.

  • Amicable Exes: Implied to be averted, as Ellie visibly looks pained when Alan brings him up, suggesting their divorce wasn't too pretty.
  • Nice Guy: A warm, friendly man who knows how much Alan still means to his wife as her friend and is happy to give them time alone to catch up. Alan outright tells Ellie he's a great guy, and not just because it's something he should say as her ex.
  • Put on a Bus: Never appears again after III, only getting mentioned in Dominion to establish that he and Ellie have divorced.
  • Romantic False Lead: With Alan and Ellie rekindling their romance by the end of Dominion, he ultimately becomes this in the grand scheme of things.
  • Second Love: Ellie dated Alan during the events of the first film, but by the third film she's settled down with Mark.

    Charlie

Charlie Degler

Played By: Blake Michael Bryan

Appearances: Jurassic Park III | Jurassic World Dominionnote

Ellie's firstborn son.

  • Artistic License – Paleontology: Played for Laughs, since as a three-year-old he is happily playing with his dinosaurs without a care in the world for historical accuracy. Alan, ever the eager paleontologist, tries correcting him by saying his Triceratops and Brachiosaurus wouldn't be interested in fighting each other, but his two carnivore toys would.
  • Cheerful Child: A perfectly innocent, happy three-year-old.
  • Dramatic Irony: He happily watches Barney the dinosaur play along with his young friends on TV, completely unaware that Alan and his friends are at the mercy of a bloodthirsty Spinosaurus who is playing with them in its own, murderous ways.
  • The Nicknamer: Like many young children, he gives Alan, who he knows as a friend of his mom, "the Dinosaur Man", which Alan appreciates.
  • Put on a Bus: Doesn't appear again after III, only getting mentioned in Dominion when Ellie says her children are now in college and have left to live on their own.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Being a three-year-old, he has no idea of the grave danger Alan is in when he calls the house, and even dances along to Barney & Friends while waiting for his mother.

    Karen & Scott

"If something chases you ... run."

Played By: Judy Greer & Andy Buckley

Appearances: Jurassic World | The Evolution Of Claire (Karen)

"A promise tomorrow is worth a lot less than trying today."
Karen, to Claire

Zach and Gray's parents. Karen is Claire's sister. They send the boys to Jurassic World alone, hoping Karen's sister will look after them.

  • Amicable Exes: Not quite. When they see off their sons going to the airport, Scott snarks about their last family meal, and Karen's smile and happy demeanor quickly fades as she asks why he snarks like this, her tone clearly irritated and lifeless. It suggests the dissolution of their marriage, while not hostile, is still far from cordial, even if they are working hard to maintain the illusion to not upset Gray in particular.
  • Babies Make Everything Better: Karen believes taking care of her nephews will help Claire get some training in for when she has children, and insists "Not if, when!" when Claire points out she doesn't want kids. In Claire's case, it doubles as Foreshadowing.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Karen teasingly tells her sons to "run" if anything chases them. Scott also jokes to Zach that he's "not leaving for war" when his girlfriend gives him a prolonged farewell. Both comments become Harsher in Hindsight in-universe, seeing as both Zach and Gray not only get chased but are almost killed several times in the film.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Not really their fault, as they evidently didn't expect Gray to be checking their mail, but he did at some point and from Googling their lawyers deduced they were going through a divorce.
  • My Way or the Highway: Even considering that circumstances ultimately prove her right, Karen comes across this way a bit when she insists Claire must have children one day, unwilling to accept Claire's "if".
  • Parents as People: A Spielberg trademark, coupled with Parental Neglect. They send their sons on a vacation alone, and, for some reason, expect Karen's Workaholic sister to look after them? Many people would consider it perfectly acceptable to send two children (one of whom is in his teens) on a trip to spend with their aunt, although it's a bit much to expect said aunt to immediately drop everything and spend time with them, with very little notice. Possibly justified in that they have been hiding the fact that they are getting divorced from their children and may need some time to arrange things such as custody. They probably also want their children to enjoy themselves and don't want to come with them in case they have a fight or reveal the divorce.
  • Prone to Tears: Karen quickly becomes emotional and begins tearing up when Claire says she is letting Zara watch the kids, sobbing about how Zach can pick on Gray and how Claire must be with them and also one day have kids. The film later makes it clear she's in the midst of her divorce so it's fairly understandable why she's a pile of emotions.
  • Satellite Character: They don't really get much characterization aside from the fact that they're divorcing soon and say some obviously Foreshadowing words. Karen even breaks down crying when talking with Claire on the phone while telling her to be a better aunt to the kids today rather than tomorrow, suggesting that she has a bad feeling that something is going to happen to her kids. And not just because of their impeding divorce.
  • Stepford Smiler: They are trying their best to act happy with each other so as to not upset their youngest son. They smile until they are out of Gray's line of sight, and even the friendly, motherly Karen's life leaves her face when Scott makes a snarky remark.

"Call me every day. And text me pics so I don't forget what you look like."

Played By: Kelly Washington

Appearances: Jurassic World

Zach's girlfriend.

  • Dumb Blonde: She comes off as one.
  • Flat Character: She's Zach's girlfriend, and that's all there is to her, unfortunately.
  • No Name Given: She's only credited as "Zach's Girlfriend" and the Junior Novelization doesn't identify her by name.
  • Satellite Love Interest: Not much is known about her aside from being Zach's girlfriend.
  • Sickeningly Sweethearts: Almost seems to be trying to invoke this trope with Zach. As the boys leave for the park, she snuggles Zach and tells him to "take plenty of pictures so [she] remembers what he looks like" and sends him an email that consists of a picture of her holding a sign that says "miss you". Ultimately subverted, though, since Zach doesn't seem nearly as interested as she is, and spends the early part of the movie openly ogling other girls.

    Mr & Mrs. Dearing

Mr and Mrs. Dearing

Appearances: The Evolution Of Claire

Claire and Karen's parents and Zach and Gray's grandparents.

  • Parents as People: Claire and Karen's parents are currently going through a rough patch that could end in divorce but they are keeping it hidden from their daughters. Their mother isn't entirely thrilled about Claire's decision to take the internship on Isla Nublar because she worries for her safety and because she will be away from her family for a year, fearing it would encourage Claire to move away.

Darius and Brandon's father who has since passed.

  • Black and Nerdy: Seems to share this with Darius, being just a big dinosaur nerd as he is.
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: He passed away before the beginning of the series.
  • Posthumous Character: He is dead by the start of the series, only appearing in flashbacks.
  • Tragic Keepsake: He has a matching raptor tooth with his son Darius. Seeing as Darius still has the other necklace, it's safe to assume that Fredrick still has it even after he had passed.

    In General

Big Rock Family

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/90fab91b_bca2_4570_9a8a_c9abadc86dfd.jpeg

Played By: Andre Holland (Dennis), Natalie Martinez (Mariana), Melody Hurd (Kadasha), Pierson Salvador (Mateo), Noah Cole & Ethan Cole (Dennis' and Mariana's baby)

Appearances: Jurassic World: Battle at Big Rock

A blended family camping at Big Rock National Park when dinosaurs suddenly appear. The parents are Dennis and Mariana, while the kids are Mateo and Kadasha alongisde an unnamed baby.

  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: While they bicker in normal situations, when they're attacked by the Allosaurus, Mateo kicks out a window and allows Kadasha to run through first, leaving him at the mercy of the predator. She repays this by firing a crossbow from their neighbor near the eye of the dinosaur.
  • Mama Bear and Papa Wolf: Dennis and Mariana readily spring to the defense of their kids when an Allosaurus attacks their camper.
  • Black and Nerdy: Dennis' side of the family is African-American, and Kadasha adores dinosaurs to a point she identifies both within seconds and rambles off facts about their migration.
  • Stepford Smiler: Heavily downplayed, but when it looks like the Allosaurus is going to succeed in eating the baby Nasutoceratops, Dennis worriedly states it's just part of the circle of life to try to reassure his kids.

Other

    Cathy Bowman

Cathy Bowman

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_1495_5.jpeg

Played By: Camilla Belle

Appearances: The Lost World: Jurassic Park

The daughter of a rich British couple. She is nearly killed and eaten by a horde of compies when her family takes a vacation on Isla Sorna; though she survives, Ludlow uses the incident to oust Hammond from the company.

  • Adaptation Name Change: She's based on a character named "Christina Bowman" (usually referred as "Tina") from the first book.
  • Adaptational Nationality: In the book, the Bowmans are American.
  • Children Are Innocent: A completely cheerful, happy child who doesn't realize she's in grave danger until it's nearly too late.
  • Death by a Thousand Cuts / Devoured by the Horde: Barely avoids suffering this fate, as her family and their butlers are able to save her life from the Compsognathus horde.
  • Eaten Alive: Strongly implied that the compies were already starting to eat her when her family and butlers came to save her.
  • Family-Unfriendly Death: Or rather, unfriendly injury. Though she survives, the InGen board views photographs of her injuries inflicted by the compies who nearly ate her, and their grimaces make it clear they did quite a number on her before her family fended them off.
  • Improbable Infant Survival: She's thankfully saved from the compies.
  • Oh, Crap!: Her excitement at having found a cute little "bird" quickly fades when more and more of the "birds" arrive and begin ominously surrounding her.
  • Parental Neglect: Downplayed. Her father wanting to "let her enjoy herself" while he lounges and reads his morning paper is what leads to her wandering off and encountering a pack of hungry compies. Whereas her mother rightfully frets about her leaving their sight and both parents come rushing to her aid when they hear her screams.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Her near-death at the hands of the compies is what Peter Ludlow uses to oust his uncle John from InGen, setting the events of The Lost World in motion, specifically his plundering of the island's animals and eventually the formation of the Site B sanctuary.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: She takes the place of babies and children who had been killed by dinosaurs invading the mainland in the novels, but she manages to survive her ordeal.
  • Spoiled Sweet: Her family is exceedingly wealthy, but she is still a sweet, happy little girl by all we see of her. She only acts a little bratty when she wants to eat a sandwich and goes off on her own.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Downplayed since she's an innocent, pampered child, but she should know better than to wander off alone on an apparently uncharted island. She may not have known a pack of hungry dinosaurs would be after her, but there could've easily been other dangerous predators or even people who could've attacked her.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: She enjoys roast beef sandwiches.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Her wandering off from the beach kicks off the plot of the second film, which ultimately costs several people their lives and leads to the public's very first encounter with genetically-resurrected dinosaurs thus laying down the foundation for the rest of the Jurassic franchise.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Hammond mentions she survived, but that's all we ever hear about her.
