In actuality, Naofumi and Malty were making an escape from the wargs, and while they had no intentions of saving anyone, until being saved by a group of knights.
  • Adaptational Species Change:
  • Adaptational Wimp: Zig Zagged. In the original canon, the party members had a maturation bonus to assist them in leveling up faster and be at a higher level than their counterparts in Ambition of the Red Princess. Despite the party members being weaker in this story, they improvised in being just as competent by developing on strategies to overcome their enemies.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Malty's relationship with Naofumi and any of his parties was primarily hostile in the canon story, while the fanfic here has Malty be a Team Member in the Adaptation, and they both get along with her, despite Mein keeping secrets of her true intentions.
  • Batman Gambit: Knowing that if Naofumi and Mein were to play themselves as important people to cause the people of Graile to revolt against the Three Heroes Church, they would be discredited by Sister Amelia trying to take control of the crowd. As a backup plan, Naofumi wears his balloons as a buckler to imitate his original shield's abilities to make himself look like the Shield Hero against Sister Amelia's claims in chapter 108.
  • The Bus Came Back: Since the enslavement of Firo and Raphtalia at the hands of the Three Heroes Church, they finally make their reappearance to be reunited back into Malty's main perspective of the story in chapter 118, where all of them are at their lowest, due to the reunion only happening because of Consevatie's trap.
  • Call-Back: Returning to the open fields nearby the Melromarc capital in chapter 116, Naofumi and Mein are reminded of what they did together at the start of their adventures when they only just farmed up their levels by killing balloon monsters, and the only main worry was Mein's thick leather armor.
  • Chain of People: Yukari, Ren, Nora, Oersted, Malty, and Naofumi all hold close to each other as a chain to ensure no one else slips out of the mountain they are scaling in chapter 125.
  • Composite Character: Malty, Kyubey, and Farkas all get their personalities and origins be expanded by combining their characters from the ones originating to their respective genres.
    • Malty's more negative aspects of her character is given the characterization of Canon!Naofumi's pessimism and selfishness to put her at the portrayal of an Anti-Hero slowly becoming heroic over the story's continuation.
    • The level 75 Wolf Slave and Rabbitman Slave are given the names, Farkas and Kyubey, to give the original characters from The Rising of the Shield Hero as their main characterization of their personality.
  • Death by Adaptation: The Rising of the Shield Hero counterparts of the Beastman wolf and injured Rabbitman remain alive as slaves kept under Beloukas. At Ambition of the Red Princess, Farkas and Kyubey who serve as the Composite Character for their Shield Hero counterparts are killed for their assistance in helping Malty and Naofumi escape the Three Heroes Church.
  • Defiant Captive: To all those captured by the Three Heroes Church to be Made a Slave, the captured party members will in someway spite their captors to bring glimmers of hope that they will eventually lose for their own incompetence to plan ahead.
  • Dwindling Party:
    • The party once had all its members fully intact and while Eclair and Yatsuhashi end up leaving, they are still alive for The Bus To Come Back. For Kyubey and Farkas, they both lose their lives in the hands of the Three Heroes Church at chapter 95, which shrinks the party. Along with the smaller party, Naofumi and Mein are left separated from all their party members, until they can find a way to eventually reunite with them.
    • Streibough, Uranus and Oersted who acted as the escorters that travelled with Malty and Naofumi to reach their desired destinations, Uranus and Streibough are killed in having to sacrifice themselves to fight off hordes of enemies. In the end, Oersted is the last member remaining that can travel with Mein and Naofumi to protect them.
  • Everyone Chasing You: Naofumi and Mein get chased off by a horde of monsters in chapter 100. To survive, they both fire off the spells they could muster up, until getting saved by Sir Chevalier.
  • Family of Choice: The party members having spent so much time together, their group dynamics operate that of a family with Naofumi and Mein taking charge as the leaders, Raphtalia and Firo being the children being cared for, and the rest of the members being out to support everyone if the worst comes to fruition.
  • I Fell for Hours: Played for Drama. The first half of chapter 92 involves Naofumi and Mein falling into the mouth of a Void Dragon Leviathan. Naofumi uses many of his shields to avoid the Leviathan's mouth, and to slow down his and Mein's falling. Mein's efforts focus on her panicked thoughts on her life and attempting to make quick-thinking moves to slow down the falling.
  • Fugitive Arc: They are all made out as criminals by the Three Heroes Church by chapter 95 under the suspicions that they were in someway related to Lautrec causing the arrival of his goddess for the third wave. In the criminal status of the party, Mein and Naofumi have to hide their identities from the public, Raphtalia and Firo are Made a Slave, and Farkas and Kyubey are killed.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Firo fits the role of a foolish sibling for her impulsive behavior as a Spoiled Brat constantly demanding for situations to go in her way, and will beat up anyone she does not like out of personal amusement. Raphtalia on the other hand has polite manners that compel her to always be thoughtful and supportive for everyone.
  • Frozen Dinner of Loneliness: Naofumi, Malty, and all of their escorters in chapter 125 eat their meals frozen and in complete silence on top of the mountain to ensure they all remain alone from the Three Heroes Church possibly finding them.
  • The Greatest Story Never Told: Naofumi and Malty were major components that allowed the people of Graile to overthrow the Three Heroes Church controlling the city, but the great achievement is downplayed by the Three Heroes Church to stop everyone in Melromarc to not have hope for the Shield Hero and Princess Malty.
  • How We Got Here: The start of chapter 129 begins with Jackson groveling to the Three Heroes Church to expose Naofumi's group, and everyone else being left to fight the opposing parties. By the halfway of the chapter, a prelude happens to detail everything that led up to how Naofumi, Mein, and Jackson all working together to lure the Three Heroes Church into a Pit Trap created by Bed-Chan.
  • I'm Standing Right Here: In chapter 105, Uranus recaps the events of the Shield Hero being said the be the one to have released an outer goddess into Medea, but Uranus is unaware that Naofumi and Malty are listening to their stories being repeated at their faces.
  • Irony: Naofumi and Malty are given escorts by knights of Gallia to bring assistance in completing their supposed pilgrimage in Faubly, but the escorts themselves do not provide any sense of comfort for them. Being desperate to keep their identities as a secret to avoid getting discovered as fugitives of the Three Heroes Church, being around strangers is not what they want and their main routes of escape is to go to Zeltoble.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Knowing that the scouts of the Three Heroes Church would eventually send reinforcements, Naofumi, Mein, Bed-Chan, and all their group members gather up together to escape from the battle in chapter 127.
  • Let Us Never Speak of This Again: Malty and Naofumi embarrassed from the humiliation of Consevatie managing to defeat them in chapter 118, despite the latter being a complete idiot, Malty and Naofumi vow to never let such a humiliating event ever befall to them when discussing Consevatie in chapter 125.
  • Locked in the Dungeon: Malty and Naofumi are Made a Slave to be locked inside of the Melromarc castle's dungeon to rot inside in, until Baldy and Blue Eyes come to their rescue as Big Damn Heroes.
  • Made a Slave:
    • In the aftermath of Naofumi and Mein's escape during chapter 95, chapter 96 reveals that Raphtalia and Firo have been made as slaves for the Three Heroes Church. As slaves, Raphtalia and Firo are forced to bow before Consevatie as their self-proclaimed master, and are unable to properly address Naofumi in the name they prefer.
    • Naofumi and Mein eventually rejoin Raphtalia and Firo as slaves of Consevatie by chapter 118, where the latter's plan to lure them into a trap has led to him gaining victory to humiliate all for the rest of their lives.
  • May It Never Happen Again: For Malty and Naofumi to take measures in ensuring Consevatie does not pull of another victory against them by pure luck, in spite of the latter's idiocy, they both take Consevatie as a serious threat that is backed up by the many manpower provided by the Three Heroes Church.
  • Metaphorically True: Naofumi and Malty both lay out crazy theories as to how the Shield Hero and Princess Malty would be in Graile, all while hiding to everyone in chapter 105 that they themselves are already present.
  • Named In The Adaptation: Kyubey and Farkas from their original appearance in The Rising of the Shield Hero only described them as their species name alongside their statuses as slaves. At the fanfic, both of them are given names that originate from their respective franchises.
  • O.C. Stand-in: Malty being the main focus of her background and adventures with Naofumi explores lots of her potential hidden personalities in canon, and to both Farkas and Kyubey to the extent.
  • Party Scattering: At chapter 95, two members being Kyubey and Farkas are killed for defying the Three Heroes Church to detain Naofumi and Mein. As for the rest of the remaining party members, Firo and Raphtalia are left behind in the clutches of the church. Eclair and Yatsuhashi meanwhile are left in different parts of Melromarc, so it is up to Naofumi and Mein to recruit those that are still alive.
  • Put on a Bus: Mein and Naofumi separating from the rest of their remaining party members in chapter 95 to make their escape from the Three Heroes Church, Raphtalia and Firo are left behind in the story to become slaves of Consevatie. From then onwards, the story focuses more on Naofumi and Mein trying to find ways to reclaim their lost party members, all while and Raphtalia and Firo take the backstage under Consevatie's control to be saved.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: The party is composed of former demi-human slaves, a princess in disguise as a commoner, Eclair hiding her true identity, and they all follow Naofumi as their Shield Hero to save Medea from the Waves of Catastrophe. They also are all on the range of common leveled adventurers, yet they do their best to save the day.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: Naofumi and Mein who are sweating in a confrontation with the Gallian knights are assumed to be afraid of the warg monsters that nearly killed them. Though the knights are partially correct of their worries, Naofumi and Malty's real fears are the knights potentially learning their true identities, which could lead to them being incarcerated.
  • Run or Die: Oersted, Naofumi, and Malty seeing unknown dead creatures inside of a cave in chapter 122, their instincts immediately alert them to run outside of the cave to get some distance, which would increase their chances to combat the unknown enemies.
  • Scaling the Summit: Chapter 125 has Malty, Naofumi, Oersted, Yukari, Nora, and Ren be climbing up a tall mountain to avoid detection from the Three Heroes Church, and to have it act as their route to reach Balafon.
  • Ship Tease: Between Naofumi and Malty in chapter 113, they both get to have a time of privacy for themselves where they Interlockfingers with each other to build a romantic scene for their minds to relax.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Firo and Raphtalia being a sibling in the form of a Family of Choice, they contribution and interactions with the group wildly differ from each other.
    • Whereas Raphtalia is always eager to help everyone in need as a way to feel like she is a useful supporter of the group, Firo always puts herself above others to have Naofumi be focused on her alone.
    • Firo has great physical strength in both her child and filorial form to easily defeat her opponents with powerful kicks, all while Raphtalia is plagued with a low self-esteem where she has to rely on sharp weapons and her adult body to be given the boost in power needed to fight.
  • Silence of Sadness: Naofumi, Malty, and Oersted are left silent, rarely speaking words to each other in chapter 122, because they are all personally dealing with the losses of their rescuers from the Three Heroes Church.
  • Slave Brand: Slowly during the shrunken state of the party, Raphtalia and Firo are the virst victims oof the Three Heroes Church to be branded as slaves that work for them. Eventually, Naofumi and Malty are caught by Consevatie's trap and are given Slave Seal tattoos as a way for the latter to humiliate them for life.
  • Slave Liberation:
    • To rebel against the Three Heroes Church is for Naofumi and Malty to work together with the remaining members of the Okami Clan, so that everyone that was turned into a Slave Race inside of Graile is freed from their slave seal.
    • Naofumi and Malty are removed of their Slave Seal in chapter 119, by Blue Eyes and Baldy arriving into the Melromarc castle's dungeon for their rescue mission.
  • Spartan Sibling: Aside from her strong devotion for Naofumi as a father, Firo constantly butts heads with Raphtalia to battle for his attention, and has no clue to care for Raphtalia's feelings if it means looking like the better child Naofumi is more attentive to.
  • Team Member in the Adaptation: Malty, Kyubey, and Farkas all become members of Naofumi's party, which is something that was never present in any iteration from The Rising of the Shield Hero.
    • In Shield Hero, Malty was actively hostile towards Naofumi's party, and while she was a team member of Motoyasu's party, Malty never had any loyalty towards him. Ambition of the Red Princess has Malty make the firm decision to stay with Naofumi, even if her initial reasons were for his heroic prestige, before slowly seeing him as a partner to value.
    • Farkas and Kyubey only existed in either web novel or anime of The Rising of the Shield Hero as Beloukas' slaves, never to be included inside of Naofumi's party. The fanfic brings Kyubey and Farkas as slaves Naofumi bought to expand his party, before setting them free.
  • Two Girls and a Guy: The main party members that receive the most focus are Mein and Raphtalia being the two girls, while Naofumi is the sole guy of their dynamic.
  • Undying Loyalty: For the strong bonds the party become as a Family of Choice, all the members grew a bond to never betray each other in the roughest times, and try to find ways to assist, even if some members are captured as slaves by opposing enemies.
  • Universal Group Reaction:
    • Played for Laughs. Mein gets most of her group members in chapter 130 to be unnerved at her short rant to get Consevatie gruesomely killed by Siltvelt, before furthering elaborating she wants to save Raphtalia and Firo first, before focusing on Consevatie's death.
      • Yet again in the same chapter, Mein's Freudian Threat to have Consevatie's dick be cut off to humiliate and bring pain to his defeat prompts everyone to give Mein a weird look with the strange suggestion she brought out to scare off their enemy.
  • Unwanted Rescue: Naofumi and Mein gain the Gallian knights as their escorts to Faubly, as so their pilgrimage that they claimed are completed, but Naofumi and Mein do not wish to go to Faubley. Furthermore, they also don't wish to travel with the knights, as so their real identities are not exposed to the Three Heroes Church and be treated a fugitives again.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Back in chapter 62, the whole party managed to defeat the Thunder Lizard. While victorious in defeating the monster, the party still needed to dispose of its corpse, but couldn't do it, since they were focused on claiming the Seatto Heirloom before the Three Heroes Church. Later in chapter 96, their lack of action resulted in the Thunder Lizard getting revived as a zombie and gains the ability revive other undead corpses.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: The party has had arguments with each other regarding some members showing their unpleasant selves at times of their interactions. Major members being Firo and Farkas, Mein to an extent have their own moments of morally grey or be downright rude, but all the members care enough for everyone's wellbeing to wish for their safety.
  • Where It All Began:
    • Planning the return to the Melromarc capital to meet up with Vicar Vittorio, Naofumi and Mein take up the plain fields as one of the pathways. Taking up that route, Mein and Naofumi remember the point as where they started their companionship by killing monsters, and Mein is reminder of her initial worries compared to her current situation in chapter 116.
      • Just as when Naofumi and Mein entered to Lute Village as their first major location outside of the Melromarc capital, they return back to the village again to find a passage that can lead back to the Melromarc capital.

    Raphtalia

Raphtalia

Debut: Chapter 10/Chapter 9: Fighting for Freedom

Origin: The Rising of the Shield Hero

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/raphtalia_child_form_shield_hero_light_novel.png
I wouldn't be alive, if you weren't there. I'm going to stay with you, just like Master Naofumi.

  • Abandonment-Induced Animosity: Defied. Learning from Consevatie in chapter 112 that Mein had kept a part of her identity as a princess be hidden from everyone, Raphtalia's head begins to flow with thoughts that Mein did not care for her, but quickly replaces them with all the times Mein had been with her, despite having gotten chances to abandon her.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Downplayed. Her backstory from original canon where her parents were killed by a Hellhound remains the same, but in this fanfic, it takes a much longer time to learn to better deal with her trauma and needs assistance to live her life.
  • Adaptational Personality Change: From The Rising of the Shield Hero, Raphtalia's personality in both the light novel and web novel was that she can at times be sassy or be a Clingy Jealous Girl to people getting close to her Naofumi. Though she started out timid and afraid as a child, Raphtalia has a lot of confidence within herself as soon as she becomes a leveled-up adult and does not take lightly to anyone choosing to insult Naofumi. Here, at Ambition of the Red Princess, Raphtalia personality is that she is still at her fearful phase as a traumatized slave girl. Though Raphtalia does slowly find confidence and bravery to make her own decisions, she is highly reliant in wanting to be close behind Master Naofumi or Big Sister Mein.
  • Adaptational Skill: Downplayed. Growing into an adult in The Rising of the Shield Hero, Raphtalia's growth is dependent on how high her levels are. by Ambition of the Red Princess, though Raphtalia needs levels to use her adult body, she also has the ability to change between looking like a child or adult, and to transform into a little raccoon as an addition.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • Raphtalia at the official Shield Hero series had her relationship being centered around being Naofumi's main Love Interest. She serves as his Living Emotional Crutch in his Darkest Hour and wants to always be with him. To other girls, Raphtalia can blush or be a Clingy Jealous Girl if they were to take Naofumi's attention from her. At the Ambition of the Red Princess, Raphtalia is more of a daughter for Naofumi and is treated more as a child needing a parental figure to grow up for their life. For romance, Raphtalia lacks any interest towards the concept and has a familial connection with her party members.
    • With Firo, they both have arguments with each other in the canon series at a Love Triangle to fight for Naofumi's attention to take care of them. In this fanfic, Firo and Raphtalia's arguments with each other is based around a Sibling Rivalry to prove as to who the better child in the Shield Hero's party is.
  • Age Lift: Zig-Zagged. Ambition!Raphtalia and Canon!Raphtalia are both around the same age, but they choose to present themselves differently from their demi-human biology aging. Whereas Canon!Raphtalia's natural demi-human aging causes her to act as an adult, Ambition!Raphtalia is capable of switching her body from a child and adult, but retains her childlike behavior.
  • Almost Kiss: Subverted. She and Raki first appeared as though they are learning to kiss each other, until Mein catches them on an act. Raki claims to not be kissing Raphtalia, but was instead attempting to teach her on how to feed an antidote by mouth. Later in chapter 58, Raphtalia and Raki were confirmed to not be kissing at all, and that Raphtalia's training actually saved Mein from poison.
  • Armour Piercing Response:
    • Mein expecting Raphtalia to be angry at her for having left the raccoon girl behind to be eaten by a Hell Hound in chapter 17, Raphtalia's response that she is not angry at Mein is what causes the latter to be left confused.
Mein/Malty: Well, you must be disappointed. After what really happened back then.
      Raphtalia: Should I?
    • Just before Web!Raphtalia prepares to strike Mein with her sword, Ambition!Raphtalia charges to interrupt her other self from murdering Mein. In a declaration to protect Mein, Ambition!Raphtalia proclaims her as another mother she won't lose to another wave. Web!Raphtalia hearing her other self speak to Mein as a mother, she is left speechless and goes under the assumption that Mein is corrupting Ambition!Raphtalia.
Ambition!Raphtalia: I'm not losing another Mother of mine you damn WAVE!
  • Beautiful Slave Girl: Deconstructed. Consevatie finding Raphtalia to be quite attractive in her adult demi-human body, he enslaves her to force her in a romantic relationship with him where she has to stay in her adult form at all times for his content.
  • Be Yourself: Raphtalia is told be Mein that she is already great as she is in chapter 64, since the former's bravery and kindness is what separates her from the Bitch Lord or any of the latter's bandits. Furthermore, Mein explains to Raphtalia as someone who has already surpassed her in being a genuine Nice Girl to cares for everyone.
  • Big Sister Worship: She likes to idolize Mein as a great big sister and during the events of chapter 64, Raphtalia vents out her frustrations as a demi-human to show her appreciated and desire to be just as kind like Big Sister Mein, despite the latter's façade as the main self she shows.
  • Blade Spam: Raphtalia delivers a rapid series of stab attacks onto Mouse's neck to have her killed in chapter 64.
  • Broken Pedestal: Defied. Learning from Consevatie that Mein is actually a princess is disguised, Raphtalia's thoughts on who Big Sister Mein is, slightly crumbles from knowing she was being lied. Though Raphtalia is hurt by learning the truth, she makes sure to remember all the times Big Sister Mein never abandoned and rebukes the slandering of Siegmar calling her a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing.
  • Broken Tears: As part of the guilt she feels from recklessly murdering Mouse, Raphtalia cries out tears from the blood she spilt and believing herself to be no better than the Bitch Lord's bandits.
  • Chekhov's Skill: In Lute Village, She and Rake looked like they were attempting to kiss each other, but got caught by Mein. Raki frantically explains that he was trying to teach Raphtalia a technique to put a mouth-to-mouth antidote, but is not believed by Mein. Later in chapter 58, where Mein is suffering from poison, Raphtalia puts Raki's mouth-to-mouth technique and succeeds in saving Mein.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Raphtalia begins to develop a feeling of envy towards Firo in the latter's child form, because she essentially replaced her by being a child that Naofumi has to fuss over to take care.
  • Damsel in Distress: In the aftermath of the third wave, Raphtalia, along with Firo are made as personal slaves of Consevatie. Though Firo is a slave, she primarily acts as a Defiant Captive that always lashes out on Consevatie in her denying any real loyalty she has for him. Raphtalia, meanwhile, remains submissive with the thought that defiance could lead to cruel punishments for her, and because she waits for anyone to eventually come rescue her from Consevatie's clutches.
  • Death Glare: Picking up a knocked out Firo in chapter 118, she stares behind Consevatie's back with great hatred to secretly have a jab at his annoying ego for being so smug at capturing Mein and Naofumi.
  • Declaration of Protection: Raphtalia declares in chapter 94 for the goddess that arrived in the third wave to not hurt her mother, Mein. To the goddess, it appears as though Mein had been manipulating Raphtlia, but Raphtalia's view is that she sees Mein as more than just a big sister to idolize.
  • Defiant Captive: When held hostage by Mouse in chapter 64, Raphtalia refuses to let herself be treated as a bargaining chip against her allies and temporarily transforms into a tiny raccoon to escape Mouse's grasp. After escaping, she rapidly stabs Mouse's neck until the latter dies.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Being the primary slave of Consevatie, Raphtalia's endurance to tolerate Faux Affably Evil treatment soon becomes too much after spending over a week with him in chapter 112. By the end of the chapter, Raphtalia is pushed into her own despair horizon where she can only let out Broken Tears from the fact Consevatie used her slave crest as a sign of their trust, something that acts as an Ironic Echo to what she once said for Master Naofumi keep her a slave in chapter 26.
  • Diving Save: By the end of chapter 90, dives near Mein to shield her from a fish monster that is about to explode on her.
  • Dramatic Irony: Upon learning Mein had been lying to her and was secretly a princess in disguise from Consevatie telling Mein's true nature in chapter 112, Raphtalia latches onto hope that Mein cares for her, because the latter risked her life to save her from a Hell Hound back in chapter 19. In actuality, however, the Lute Village Mine incident was the only time Mein wanted to leave Raphtalia for dead, and all the other times she spent with Raphtalia afterwards was where she cared for her well-being.
  • Finishing Each Other's Sentences: Raphtalia starts her statement to question Mein if the old mage at the catacomb was someone close to her, until Naofumi jumps in to conclude that Aldrecht was someone Mein regrets having accidentally killed.
  • Foil: To Firo, both of them share the traits by being the youngest members to Naofumi's party, but the way they contribute themselves and act in the part is what sets them apart each other.
    • Firo can effortlessly or is one of the main firepower for fighting against enemies, while Raphtalia constantly struggles to fight from her past trauma, young body, and inexperience.
    • Firo is the Spoiled Brat within the group and can react violently to people wanting to discipline, and Raphtalia, meanwhile, blames herself when her party members get hurt and wants to always be near them for their emotional support.
  • Forced Transformation: Invoked. She is capable of growing up into a child or adult at will, but since her enslavement by the Three Heroes Church, Raphtalia is forced by Consevatie to remain as an adult, so that he can treat her as a "babe" that is stuck in a relationship with him.
  • Gilded Cage: Raphtalia gets to live the riches of what it means to have a royal life as a princess under Consevatie, but to be given those riches, Raphtalia loses her freewill as a slave, is turned into Consevatie's abused love interest, and is unable to return back to Naofumi and Mein.
  • Go-Go Enslavement: Under a slave of Consevatie, he keeps her at her adult-looking demi-human body, as so he could turn Raphtalia into a Villainous Crush he can force into a relationship, all while he disregards the fact that Raphtalis is a child at heart.
  • Go Mad from the Revelation: Raphtalia sinks into her Despair Event Horizon from learning the truth from Consevatie that while he may claim that her status as his slave is a "sign of their trust", Raphtalia realizes that Consevatie degraded her into an object, and that slavery was never the reason she was treated kindly by Naofumi.
  • Growling Gut: Played for Laughs. Her stomach growls loudly for food and it just so happens to interrupt Mein's attempt to kiss Naofumi to bond with him closer.
  • Happiness in Slavery:
    • Deconstructed. In her eyes, she views of the slave crest as a sign of trust that her Master Naofumi will always take care of her if she always obeys him. As for Mein, she is disturbed at Raphtalia equating slavery as a form of trust, despite it being known for executing or torturing slaves to death. Even when Raphtalia is freed of the slave crest in chapter 26, Naofumi has to confirm to her that their trust is while invisible, it will never be shattered.
    • Defied in chapter 112, as Raphtalia learning how horrible her treatment being a slave to Consevatie is, she understand how wrong her previous mindset was for thinking slavery was beneficial for her, when all it really did is separate her from Master Naofumi to act as a forced love interest of Consevatie.
  • Hates Being Touched: Downplayed. Specifically to Consevatie, he keeps her around as a slave where she is forced to act as a partner to him, while he goes around ogling her body as a way to demonstrate he owns her and that no one else is to take her away from him. Raphtalia, feeling all the times Consevatie has touched her, she is left only disturbed by his attitude, and can't feel the same warm love Naofumi and Mein have shown to her.
  • Hunter of His Own Kind: Despite Mouse being a demi-human just like her, Raphtalia grows to hate her own species for being such savage animals on how they treat their captured humans and wishes to be a human like Naofumi or big sister Mein.
  • Impromptu Tracheotomy: She gets Mouse killed by dragging a dagger into the latter's neck multiple times in chapter 64.
  • Infant Sibling Jealousy: For a time, Raphtalia used to be the center of attention for Naofumi to take care of, since she was his only child. Ever since Firo is revealed to be capable of becoming a humanoid girl, Naofumi has to divide his attention to tame Firo's tantrums. Raphtalia, no longer the youngest and single child of the party, she gets an envious feeling towards Firo for being stronger than her in battle and for being too entitled to tolerate.
  • Innocently Insensitive: To convince Naofumi into letting her stay with him to fight off the undead, Raphtalia claims that she won't be The Load to him or a pampered noble. A "pampered noble" as one of Raphtalia's reasonings, it ends up being a jab to Mein's secret identity as a princess.
  • Ironic Echo: Back in chapter 26, Raphtalia desperately tries to have Naofumi keep her as a slave, because in her eyes, the slave seal is the "sign of their trust". Fast-forward to chapter 112, and those same words that slavery is a sign of trust is echoed to her by Siegmar Isaac Octavius Consevatie. Rather than be feeling the warm love of Master Naofumi who freed her from slavery, Consevatie turns the concept of slavery as a way to force her into becoming his adult "babe".
  • Ironic Last Words: Before Consevatie leaves her off in chapter 112, he makes his parting words be that the slave crest she wears on her chest is a "sign of trust". Raphtalia, remembering her own words said back in chapter 26 where she used the slave crest as a sign of trust to remain with Naofumi, she cries out Broken Tears from the realization of her own words thrown back to her face.
Siegmar Isaac Octavius Consevatie: I don't have to. After all, I hold our 'sign of trust'.
Raphtalia: I was wrong... I was so wrong...
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Naofumi and Mein are the two most important figures Raphtalia wishes to always spend her time with. In her worrying moments or Darkest Hour, Raphtalia is quick to rely on them for their support and wants to be beside to keep them safe as her Parental Substitutes. The thought of being separated from Naofumi and Mein would clench Raphtalia's heart in fear and it's part of the reason she wishes to remain a slave for the party.
Raphtalia's Thoughts: (Her heart clenched at the thought of being forced to leave Master Naofumi and big sister Mein. This was why she wanted to keep her seal. If everyone knows she belongs to Master Naofumi, nobody can take them apart.)
  • Lonely Rich Kid: Under Consevatie's watch as his slave, Raphtalia's lifestyle is filled with high-class food and shelter, but remains dissatisfied and troubled from being unable to feel any comfort that Naofumi and Mein once given her in their time together.
  • Kid Has a Point: When denied by Mein to go on a solo infiltration mission to save Naofumi, Raphtalia reasons with her small size and ability to transform into a tiny raccoon being the best way to hide from the Bitch Lord's bandits.
  • Kiss of Life: She performs a kiss onto Mein's mouth while the latter is unconscious, so that Raphtalia could desperately find a way to feed her an antidote that is poisoning her body in chapter 58.
  • Knee Fold Fall of Defeat: After Consevatie leaves her in a room alone in chapter 112 to wallow from the fact being a slave to mean they are obligated to trust each other, Raphtalia falls onto her knees and reaches a Troubled Fetal Position to let out her tears at the knowledge of finally understanding how messed up slavery is.
  • Man Bites Man: She transforms into her little animal form in chapter 94 to slip past the Lady of the Sword's defenses in chapter 94. Once Raphtalia is near the goddess, she takes harsh bites onto her face for attempting to murder Mein.
  • Miss Conception: From hearing Zylden make an unremarkable sex joke over how he would easily fall asleep attempting to convince a knight to sleep with him, Raphtalia questions why the former would refuse to want sleep. Due to her parents' passing, Raphtalia never gets the chance to understand the adult meaning of Zylden's joke in Chapter 49.
  • Mouth To Mouth Force Feeding:
    • She uses a type of kissing technique she learned from Raki to transport an antidote into Mein's mouth to save her from poisoning.
    • Reminded by Mein of the Mouth To Mouth Force Feeding in chapter 131, Raphtalia places her mouth onto the Balafon Elder's mouth to provide a way for the latter to drink a Healing Potion unconscious.
  • Non-Indicative Name: She says Master Naofumi and Big Sister Mein, which on a surface level, means that Naofumi is her owner and Mein is a Cool Big Sis for her. On a deeper level in Raphtalia's heart, she refers to them be those names, because she sees them as parents who are always there for her.
  • Precision F-Strike: Raphtlia, who normally does not swear in any of her dialog, her going out of her way to save Bis Sister Mein from Web!Raphtalia is to call the later a "damn WAVE" for trying to hurt another mother of hers.
  • Pummeling the Corpse: After having unleased a Blade Spam on Mouse's neck, Raphtalia continues to attack her and doesn't notice that Mouse had already died. When Naofumi calls out that Mouse had died, Raphtalia gets a realization that she got someone killed, causing her to look at her hands and cry.
  • Rags to Riches: Deconstructed. Raphtalia who was once a child party member of the Shield Hero is brought in by Consevatie to live out her life in riches. Even though Raphtalia is able to ascend past her poverty life, living in Consevatie's granted luxuries blocks out the possibility of seeing Naofumi and Mein as the parents that showed real care for her.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Zig-Zagged. Having Naofumi and Mein around her, Raphtalia doesn't view them as a new set of parents to replace her deceased ones, but being near Naofumi and Mein gives her the feeling her original parents never disappeared.
  • Slippery Skid: Exploited. A part of her attack strategy to fight large masses of people that are stronger than her is to throw a bottle of Naofumi's stinky shampoo to make them slip into the floor.
  • So Proud of You: Mein expresses her gratitude to Raphtalia being a better hero than her in chapter 64, as she compares Raphtalia to be the real brave one in fighting off the Hell Hound back at Lute Village.
  • Super-Hearing: Raphtalia's long raccoon ears lets her hear conversations from a faraway distance or people keeping their mouths quiet to listen in on secret news.
  • Surpassed the Teacher: Wanting herself to be a better person, instead of Mouse's cruelty as a demi-human that fed a boy to a dog, Raphtalia expresses her desire to be just like Naofumi and Mein in terms of their selflessness. In Mein's case to comfort Raphtalia of her tears in chapter 64, she claims Raphtalia to already be better than her as a Nice Girl, since Raphtalia was the one who showed real bravery in the Lute Village mine, while she ran away for her life.
  • These Hands Have Killed: After killing Mouse in a fit of rage in chapter 64 and is calmed down by Naofumi from the act, Raphtalia looks at her hands and breaks down crying, not wanting to be a murderer.
  • This Looks Like a Job for Aquaman: Raphtalia who is the smallest in the group and is generally the most inexperienced at fighting is the one who is most important for an infiltration to save Naofumi from the Siltvelt Agents in chapter 58. Raphtalia's importance relies on the fact that her species and small size allow her to be much more sneakier than the rest of her party members.
  • Transformation Discretion Shot: Transforming into her tiny raccoon form and demi-human form will cause a cloud of smoke to appear in the brief seconds she makes her time to change states.
  • Troubled Fetal Position: Raphtalia falls onto her knees and lies down on the floor to cry out her realization as to Consevatie using slavery as a "sign of trust", and understanding how wrong she was for trying to justify her status as a slave back in earlier chapters.
  • Wham Line:
    • When she begins hating Mouse in chapter 64 and claims herself to be just as bad like the bandits, because she is the same species as them, Mein is left bewildered at Raphtalia comparing herself to the bandits, and thinks on the real kindness Raphtalia has within her.
    • Just as she is easily tossed away by Web!Raphtalia out of battling her in chapter 94, Ambition!Raphtalia says out loud to not wanting her to hurt another mother of hers in anyway. To Web!Raphtalia, she thinks Ambition!Malty corrupted Raphtalia, while the latter is surprised to learn of her Promotion to Parent.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Raphtalia, breaking down in tears at the possibility her life as a demi-human means she is just as bad as the Bitch Lord's bandits in chapter 64, she receives comfort from Naofumi and Mein telling her of all the positivity she had brought onto everyone.
  • You Called Me "X"; It Must Be Serious: If she were to call for Naofumi, Raphtalia would always call him a master, because she sees him as a parental figure that watches over her. As Consevatie's slave, however, the Three Heroes are able to notice her enslavement, due to Raphtalia calling Naofumi as Shield Hero, instead of master.
  • Younger Than They Look: Technically, Raphtalia is still a child but due to her high levels at such a young age, her real body's appearance is that of an adult. However, Raphtalia prefers to keep looking like a child of her age and only makes herself become an adult for combat efficiency.
Ambition!Raphtalia: I'm not losing another Mother of mine you damn WAVE!

    Kyubey

Kyubey

Debut: Chapter 10/Chapter 9: Fighting for Freedom

Origin: Puella Magi Madoka Magica | The Rising of the Shield Hero

  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Subverted. He is assumed to be nothing more than a furry bunny that accompanies the Shield Hero on his quest, but the way he exposes and suspects Mein's secrets causes her to view him as a potential enemy. It's only when Kyubey clarifies that he is sympathizing with Mein on her fake identity issues that she realizes that he is pitying her.
  • Creepy Monotone: For most of the time he talks, he always keeps his voice in the same tone. His way of talking ends up confusing his sympathies for Mein as a type of extortion when he reveals his suspicions on her in chapter 67.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: His name is usually called Kyubey, but chapter 95 gets him called as "Kyubei", when Naofumi calls out his name.
  • Sacrificial Lion: Kyubey who was an integral member of the party that assisted Naofumi in his battles, is killed in chapter 95 to defend him and Mein from an incoming fireball of Consevatie. Since the death of Kyubey, the Church of the Three Heroes take the charge in chasing down Mein and Naofumi as fugitives, and the rest of the remaining Legendary Heroes are left to deal with the mess the church will eventually cause in the future.
  • Take Care of the Kids: He whispers to Mein's ears and requests her in chapter 95 to take care of the Shield Hero. Afterwards, Kyubey jumps out of Mein's body to loosen the weight for her and Naofumi to escape. As Kyubey falls, he tanks Consevatie's fireball to save Mein and Naofumi from getting hit.
  • Taking the Bullet: Seeing that Consevatie's [Providence Fireball] is quickly catching up to Naofumi and Mein in chapter 95, Kyubey leaves them to tank the fireball, so that they all aren't killed in a single attack.
  • That Came Out Wrong: The first time he says that Mein isn't who she says she is, the latter retaliates under the assumption she is being blackmailed. Once Kyubey explains to Mein that she needs to have the confidence to reveal her true identity to Naofumi, it turns out Kyubey was pitying her situation but failed to properly do it, because of his Creepy Monotone.

    Farkas

Farkas

Debut: Chapter 10/Chapter 9: Of Princess, Hero, and Slave

Origin The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim | The Rising of the Shield Hero

  • A Death in the Limelight: Farkas lifetime spent within the Five Hundred Guards and all the way to his servitude to Naofumi is shown in Farkas' own omake in chapter 95. Once Farkas' life story is finished, it focuses on the current events of him facing off Zellus on a Single-Stroke Battle.
  • Mutual Kill: Zellus and Farkas slice both their flesh off in a quick sword battle by the end of chapter 95. Subverted, as it's later revealed that Zellus only passed out from his blood loss and Farkas was the only one that was Killed Off for Real.
  • Sacrificial Lion: Although he was one of the members that had the lesser screen time, Farkas was nevertheless an integral person for the party in assisting Naofumi to battle out his enemies and to have knowledge of Siltvelt's politics. By chapter 95, Farkas is killed in a battle against Zellus and the Church of the Three Heroes on the other hand were hot on detaining all of Naofumi's party as suspects.
  • Single-Stroke Battle: His battle against Zellus lasts for one line that describes them charging their swords onto each other and the impalement causing both opponents to bleed out in chapter 95.

    Gaston

Gaston

Debut: Chapter 16/Chapter 14: Dear Hearts and Gentle People

Origin: Beauty and the Beast

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gaston_render.png

  • Breakout Character: He was at first supposed to act as The Cameo to reference his role in Beauty and the Beast. To expand the worldbuilding in Ambition of the Red Princess, Qinlongfei built up Gaston's role as the guider for the Shield Hero's party to have a clear goal in mind for Medea.
  • Everyone Has Standards: In chapter 63, Gaston admits that even at the worst of his behavior in the past, he would never stoop as low as the Bitch Lord in being a Defiant Captive towards captors willing to show decency at their enemies.
  • Put on a Bus: Since his introduction, he spends his time guiding Naofumi's group throughout Melromarc and has assisted them in their battle. In chapter 80, Gaston makes his declaration to Naofumi at wanting to return back Lute Village to feel at home once again and thanks him for becoming stronger through their journeys.

Debut: Chapter 16/Chapter 14: Dear Hearts and Gentle People

Origin: Unknown

    Firo

Firo

Debut: Chapter 31/Chapter 26: The Gathering Storm

Origin: The Rising of the Shield Hero

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/filo_anime.png

  • Adaptational Jerkass: Firo had her occasionally jerkish moments in The Rising of the Shield Hero, but most of it came towards her enemies provoking her and while she does kick them, they are usually well-deserved. Here, Firo rarely gets along with her party members, since her spoiled, amoral attitude makes her a haughty bird that needs to be kept under watched at all times. At worst, she kicks anyone for no reason or for overreacting to minor insults, despite having enough power to cause serious injuries.
  • Adaptational Late Appearance: Whereas in The Rising of the Shield Hero Filo gains the ability to transform into a humanoid angel during the same episode she debuted in. For this fanfic, it takes Firo about a month to show everyone that she is capable of transforming into a little girl or in her bird form.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Downplayed. Firo is still a hero just like her canon self, but her engagement to kicking people for no reason or for spite is taken much more seriously that people give Naofumi options on how Firo should be disciplined or killed.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Firo is a newly hatched filorial and she is treated by Naofumi as the younger sibling to Raphtalia for her lack of emotional maturity. Whenever Firo is near Raphtalia, she is always quick to show off how much better she is at battle compared to her and feels the entitlement to do anything that she pleases. Firo's spoiled attitude in the group is so bad, that she ends up being the only one to really raise Raphtalia's voice into calling out her behavior.
  • Ax-Crazy: Deconstructed. Firo has a habit to kick people either because she hates them for petty reasons or will do so just for feeling like it. With how violent she acts towards everyone, Naofumi is put in a position to use harsh parenting tactics to control her behavior.
  • Berserk Button: A way that can trigger her into attempting or preparing to kick someone is if she is called fat in her bird form.
  • Backhanded Apology: Firo gives a seemingly genuine apology to Raphtalia in chapter 86 for staring a fight against her, but after delivering the apology, Firo then does a Tongue-Out Insult to Raphtalia.
  • Big, Stupid Doodoo-Head: Firo's childish insult to Wyndia in chapter 85 is to call her a "stinky dragon dog". Firo's insults slowly lose its coherency when the only comeback she can deliver to Wyndia is put emphasis on her stinkiness.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Played for Laughs. She attempts to prepare herself to kick Mein and Raphtalia, but is stopped by Naofumi from doing so. In response, Firo pretends to act nice by grooming Raphtalia's hair to get onto Naofumi's good graces, but Mein can easily see through the facade.
  • Blowing a Raspberry: She is prone to blowing out her mouth at someone whenever she feels as though they have been humiliated or she has come out at the top as the winner of arguments.
    • In chapter 85, Firo blows a raspberry to Wyndia as part of her No, You insult.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Being a filorial who was never disciplined with the concept of morals, Firo fails to understand why it is wrong to randomly kick people for amusement or to respond with violence against minor insults. Particularly to Lucatiel's death in chapter 73, Firo shows a disturbing Lack of Empathy and can't care that Eclair needs her space to grieve.
  • Childhood Brain Damage: In chapter 31, Firo's head was flicked by Mein's hand and while it at first viewed as nothing more than a minor incident, chapter 86 reveals that by inflicting violence onto Firo's immediate birth, Mein had unintentionally triggered the aggressive mindset of Firo.
  • Defiant Captive: Firo, along with Raphtalia are made as slaves for the Church, and while Consevatie forced Raphtalia into calling him the new master, Firo is fully rebellious against all of his orders and only sees Naofumi as her and Raphtalia's real master.
  • Disowned Sibling: She rejects viewing Raphtalia as a family member or a sibling in chapter 118, as she sees the latter to be a traitor that led Naofumi and Mein into Consevatie's trap. However, after Firo is calmed down by Naofumi, she gives up continuing her beating and blaming on Raphtalia to obey her father.
  • Extremely Protective Child: Anytime Naofumi were to get hurt by something or someone, Firo will always get motivated to beat up the person who had hurt Naofumi, who she considers to be a father.
    • Deconstructed. Seeing Naofumi get hurt from attempting to absorb the crystal ball of the Seatto heirloom, Firo's instinctive reaction is to avenge Naofumi by attacking Eclair. Even though Eclair is heartbroken over learning the origins of her Seatto heirloom and has no knowledge as to what it would do to Naofumi, Firo's attempts to avenge Naofumi ends up coming off as a Misplaced Retribution.
    • Believing Raphtalia to responsible for aiding Consevatie in his trap to defeat Naofumi and Mein, Firo goes ballistic on giving Raphtalia a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown to punish her for looking like a traitor to their father.
  • Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon: In her human form, she has the appearance of an angelic, beautiful child. However, inside of her mind, she has a Lack of Empathy on what others are feeling and will kick anyone for the pettiest of reasons or for no reason at all.
  • Foreshadowing: Firo makes a minor remark to Raphtalia in chapter 80 that the reason she acts as a meanie is because Big Sister Mein attacked her since birth. Come to chapter 86, and Mein is able to conclude that she did play a role in Firo's bratty behavior from a Childhood Brain Damage all the way back in chapter 31 for having flicked baby Firo's head.
  • Hulk Speak: Once Firo showcases her human vocabulary in chapter 71, she can only form out short, simple sentences that include her name alongside the emotions she wills or wants.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: Firo, upon attaining her human form in chapter 71 has no clothing in her body. To any given clothes, Firo rejects them in favor of being naked, since she finds the texture of clothing to be irritating to her skin.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: For a while, Firo has never received proper comeuppance because of her absurd strength and Naofumi only wanting to go in a gentle approach to tame her violent behavior. Eventually, Firo's own petty behavior becomes her own downfall, as in picking a fight against Yuki, the latter easily beats her and gets incapacitated in a humiliating position during chapter 85.
  • Lack of Empathy: Witnessing Eclair and the other members of the Shield Hero's party be frozen with shock or tears from Lucatiel's death, Firo's only reaction to seeing people mourn is to call out how boring everyone is.
  • The Millstone: As helpful as she can be for battle or transportation, Firo's violent tantrums over minor insults prove herself to be a problematic member inside of the group. The worst her behavior reaches is in chapter 74, when she chooses to blame and attack Eclair for the latter's family heirloom hurting Naofumi. As a result of such a reckless action, the rest of the Shield Hero's party members have to work together just to restrain Firo, until getting ambushed by Aldrecht and the Free Fighters.
  • Misplaced Retribution:
    • After Naofumi gets injured from absorbing the Seatto crystal ball heirloom into his shield, Firo is quick to blame Eclair for the accident, despite the latter having no idea on what the heirloom would even do.
    • Though Raphtalia was a slave forced to obey Consevatie in creating an illusion for Naofumi to be lured into in chapter 118, Firo chooses to attack Raphtalia to get payback at the latter for looking like she betrayed their real father in exchange for Consevatie.
  • Never My Fault: Firo gets into a fight with Raphtalia in chapter 86, as a result of Raphtalia calling out Firo for her inconsiderate behavior at exploiting Naofumi's kindness for her own benefits. Once their fight is put to a stop by Naofumi and Firo is demanded to apologize, Firo is quick to blame Raphtalia for insulting her and despite apologizing to Raphtalia, Firo is quick to do a Tongue-Out Insult.
  • Nightmare Face: Firo's face twists into a nightmarish expression of anger in chapter 118 to vent out her frustrations and beatings on Raphtalia for being submissive to Consevatie's commands, instead Naofumi being their real father.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: She brutalizes Raphtalia in chapter 118 by stomping the latter's body onto the ground. As Raphtalia is left splattered with blood, Firo is left screaming to declare Raphtalia to be deserving of death and a traitor to their Master Naofumi.
  • Not-So-Innocent Whistle: As Katarina and Motoyasu deny trashing all of the valuable equipment from the laboratory in Chapter 49, Firo on the other hand is the only one turning her head away from the accusations and hums away. Malty, a professional liar herself, she immediately catches onto Firo's guilt.
  • No, You: Firo's comeback insults to hurl at Wyndia is to repeat more of the latter becoming an even stinkier dragon dog.
  • The Ophelia: In her human form, she is described as having the beauty of an angel with her wings, but beneath her childlike appearance, Firo is an immature brat believing herself to be above any punishment and has an Ax-Crazy attitude problem at anyone that dares insult her.
  • Poor Communication Kills: To anyone wishing to discipline or implicate Firo's bad behavior, Firo has a strong likely hood of viewing such people as meanies and whatever excuses that are given will be ignored by Firo's tantrum.
  • Sanity Has Advantages: Though great at being a fighter in battle, Firo's Lack of Empathy and bratty behavior gives her a weak mental fortitude that can be easily exploited. As shown in chapter 81, Firo is easily hypnotized by Kael'thas by a purple orb and its effects lasts longer if the victim lacks a stable mind.
  • Sibling Murder: To get revenge at Raphtalia for being a participant with Consevatie's plan to lure Naofumi into an illusion in chapter 118, Firo takes an active effort to beat her up, until choosing to stop because of Naofumi reminding her to treat Raphtalia as a sister to care for, instead of a traitor.
  • Sociopathic Hero: She is a garden-variety breed filorial that sides with Naofumi to assist him in fighting battles. However, Firo has no interest in any noble goals and only cares about getting praised by Naofumi. Anything else, Firo can get easily infuriated and react towards the people she hates with violence, or be having a Lack of Empathy at the suffering of others.
  • They Died Because of You: Downplayed. Though Naofumi and Mein are not dead in chapter 118, seeing them get captured boils up Firo's rage to accuse Raphtalia for having failed their parents, because the latter used her illusionary magic to assist Consevatie in his plans, despite Raphtalia being a slave forced to obey commands.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Unlike Mein, who despite exploiting the party of the Shield Hero as her tool for her ascension as queen, yet grows closer with the group and gains more sympathetic qualities, and Farkas being a loyal member, despite his Jerkass attitude, Firo proves herself to be the worst in the group. Combined with being a Spoiled Brat, Firo has a strained relationship with her party members and due to not getting proper discipline, Firo is prone to react violently from any insults.
  • Tongue-Out Insult:
    • After getting a disapproving look from Naofumi punishing for her bratty behavior towards Raphtalia, Firo pulls her tongue out to Raphtalia in chapter 72 while no one is looking.
    • She pulls out her tongue at Raphtalia again in chapter 86 to secretly taunt her in a fake apology.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: She barely over a month old and is considered to be a youthful-looking child in Naofumi's party. Despite Firo's angelic appearance, she lacks an understanding of what it means to grieve over the death of close allies, simply viewing the process as a waste of time. Unlike Raphtalia, who understands what Eclair feels from the death of Lucatiel, Firo can only pout at the situation boring her.
  • Wimp Fight: Firo engages in a slap fight against Wyndia in chapter 85, after being finished at delivering No, You insults at her.
  • You Should Have Died Instead: Seeing that Naofumi and Mein were captured by Consevatie in chapter 118, partially because Raphtalia played a role in using her illusion magic to lead their parents to their doom, Firo goes on a rampage to beat up Raphtalia, all while claiming she should have died instead of being Consevatie's accomplice.

    Eclea/Eclair Seatto

Eclea/Eclair Seatto

Debut: Chapter 11/Interlude 2: The Preparation of the Loyal Mage

Origin: The Rising of the Shield Hero

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eclair_8.png

  • Armor-Piercing Response: Iris first acts dismissal towards her, believing that Eclea is underestimating the obvious of the Three Heroes Church being able to do whatever it wants to the Shield Hero, because no law enforcement is strong enough to stop them. For Eclea to get her point to Iris, she reveals that Naofumi is a thane of Jarl Balgruuf, which makes him part of nobility, so attacking him would mean attacking all of nobility. Iris, learning that fact, is attached to listen to what more Eclea has to say in chapter 112.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: At first, Eclair's tragedy of losing her father, Uther, and the land that once belonged to House Seatto plays out similarly to canon. Eventually, Eclair's angst and trauma slowly become more heartbreaking than what happened in canon, as her loyalty to trust Queen Mirellia is soured by Malty's manipulation, the Seatto heirloom Eclair's family had been safeguarding was never theirs, and the Boletaria Castle that once was a home for her ancestors is ruined.
  • Adaptational Badass: In this story, Eclair gains a Runic Bronze Sword that has lasted for centuries without degrading and in addition of the sword, King Ariona lives inside it to empower it even further. In contrast to her canon counterpart, Eclair wields a regular sword.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Eclair's introductory appearance from The Rising of the Shield Hero had her appear in the Spirit Tortoise arc. The arc takes place way ahead of the entire timeline the Ambition of the Red Princess covers. For the fanfic itself, Eclair is introduced in chapter 11, where she is held captive in a dungeon and is afterwards freed by Aldrecht. Once freed, Eclair becomes a major party member for Naofumi and assists the group in finding an artifact known as the Seatto Heirloom.
  • Bad Liar: Trying to find alibis and well-detailed evidence to back up any made up stories to back up her false identity as Eclea or any secretive information regarding her involvement with the Shield Hero is something that Eclair never thinks about, until someone starts questioning her lies.
  • Berserk Button:
    • A way that could easily get Eclair fired up is her family honor getting insulted by anyone. For Weiss, the latter insulting her family's honor was enough to get Eclair motivated to accept a challenge in their duel.
    • Even as Eclair self-deprecates herself over feeling like a dishonorable bully, just hearing Malty disrespect her father's Wide-Eyed Idealist viewpoint, it's enough to have Eclair point her sword towards Malty. Afterwards, Eclair quickly calms down from her rash actions and believes herself to be unbecoming of a knight.
  • Big "WHAT?!": At first overhearing Itsuki say that Naofumi and Malty are on a run against the Three Heroes Church, Eclair lets out a Flat "What". By chapter 111 where she gets a full confirmation of the situation, Eclair really says a Big "WHAT?!" for how horrible that Three Heroes Church are acting towards Naofumi and Malty.
  • Broken Pedestal: She first viewed Queen Mirellia as a fair and just queen that is trustworthy in keeping the people of Melromarc safe from harm. However, Eclair's initial beliefs towards Mirellia is slowly soured by Malty painting her mother in a negative light and the dirty businesses Mirellia engages in that the public doesn't know about. What causes Eclair to snap and express her disdain at Mirellia in chapter 74 is by finding out that the Queen uses criminal slaves to engage in morally questionable actions.
  • The Bus Came Back: After being gone for the story since chapter 79, Eclair makes her appearance back again in chapter 109 in a form of an omake detailing what happened since her departure from Naofumi's party. In her omake, Eclair worked with Lord Nash, Lord Graithos, and Lord Steward to fight off a group of undead people revived by Zilla. After finishing off the undead, Eclair is met with the Three Heroes, and hearing from their discussion, she learns of Naofumi and Malty's fugitive status.
  • Cool Sword: She chooses a Runic Bronze Sword out of the weapons that King Ariona had revealed to the Shield Hero's party and the members of the Church of the Three Heroes. The sword Eclair wields has been kept clean for centuries and its further empowered by Ariona's soul.
  • Death Glare: Eclair is assumed to be glaring at Malty for the latter destroying Boletaria castle during a Power High state. When Malty announces that Eclair is probably feeling angry about punching her face, Eclair is revealed to not be angry at all, but is instead glad for Malty's care for her and that the destruction of Boletaria was necessary for the long run.
  • Delayed Reaction: It takes Eclair some time to fully get to the realization of Itsuki casually talking to his hero colleagues on Naofumi and Mein being on the run from the Three Heroes Church in chapter 109.
  • Eye Contact as Proof: In chapter 111, what gives Eclea off as a liar hiding Mein's real identity and importance is that she is unable to make herself look at Ren's eyes when he reveals that there is only one real Myne of Samphor that exists.
  • Flat "What": As part of her Delayed Reaction to process Itsuki's words that Naofumi and Mein are on the run from the church, Eclair gives a Flat "What" as the last words of chapter 109's omake to comprehend what she just heard.
  • Hand Wave: If anyone were to get close to her similar sounding Eclea name for Eclair, her usual response to such questions is to say she is named after Lord Uther's daughter to stop people from getting through her Paper-Thin Disguise.
  • Heroic BSoD: Eclair goes under a breakdown upon learning that the Seatto heirloom that her family house had been safeguarded for generations was never their to begin with. It turns out that the heirloom originated from an ancestor of hers that stole it from someone else in the past.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: In the aftermath of her fight against Weiss, Eclair is given an Armor-Piercing Response from the former about her Honor Before Reason. Later in chapter 49, Eclair has a private talk with Malty to discuss the illusion of her father inside the cave. Hearing the illusion Lord Seatto shame her, Eclair admits to feeling like a bully and an unworthy knight towards Weiss, despite the latter being a Smug Snake cheater.
  • Hesitation Equals Dishonesty: Her slow answer to justify that she is simply Mein's close friend in chapter 111 is cracked easily by him admitting that there is only one real Myne of Samphor, and afterwards, all Eclea could do is look away from his eyes to avoid telling anyone of Mein being Malty.
  • I Owe You My Life: For all the times Malty has assisted her as an ally in the Shield Hero's party, even though Malty only wanted her to be a political tool for becoming queen, Eclair makes a vow to Malty in wanting to become a friend for everything the latter did to guide her in the adventure. Malty, hearing the word "friend", a spark lights up in her mind to accept the offer to finally have someone she can trust with nothing to worry herself.
Eclair: But I will return to you. If I do make something of myself, or if you ever need help. Because I need to repay you for all the things you have done for me, encouraging me to keep going and not give up. If you'll have me, I'll be proud to call you my friend, my princess.
  • Luminescent Blush: Her face lights up red in chapter 109, because of Uncle Reichnott acknowledging her as a worthy knight and being a reminder of someone named Eclair, even though she is Right In Front of Him. As Eclair starts getting red from the pressure, she realizes that her Eclea identity needs a more cohesive backstory for people to not make assumptions about her.
  • Mirthless Laughter: Eclea laughs nervously in attempting to make herself appear shocked at chapter 111 from hearing Ren's confession that there is only one real Myne of Samphor that exists.
  • Mythology Gag: Her disguised name as Eclea is a reference to Motoyasu from The Reprise of the Spear Hero accidentally misnaming her real name.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: She gives herself the name "Eclea", and a backstory as a mercenary. Even with an obviously sounding name that is close to her true name and a backstory she never bothered to give a detailed past, people struggle to make a connection of her identity as a knight.
  • Poor Communication Kills: She calls out Tanya as a traitor from the assumption that the latter is secretly injecting Naofumi with poison in chapter 61. However, it turns out that Tanya is only planning on injecting a sleeping potion onto Naofumi to stop him from taking any reckless actions.
  • Prone to Vomiting: At Chapter 54, Eclair vomits out of the carriage and is said to have done so numerous times from getting sick with the long rides.
  • Psychological Projection: In chapter 79, she projects her opinion onto Ariona inside her sword as a way to reinforce the belief that it was a good outcome for Boletaria Castle to be destroyed, as it lowers the amount of family burdens she needs to deal with.
  • Put on a Bus: In chapter 79, Eclair stays behind at Port Hart to be by herself while the Shield Hero's party goes to the North. Eclair does promise Mein that when ready, she will return and assist Mein in her journey as friends.
  • Right in Front of Me: Being a mercenary known as Eclea, she helps out Lord Steward, Lord Graithos, and Lord Nash fight off a group of the undead. Once finished, Eclair is offered to become a knight by Lord Steward for her heroism and praises her as someone that reminds him of Eclair, all while the latter in chapter 109 does not reveal her identity to anyone.
  • Saying Too Much: In chapter 111, admitting to herself of her relief that Naofumi got to run away with Mein from the Three Heroes Church, her thoughts are quickly interrupted by Ren questioning as to why she would be glad as to why Mein is specifically needed to be with Naofumi. Since Ren's question, he begins to Pull the Thread to crack all her secrets as to who Mein is, until Iris reveals to everyone that Mein of Samphor is Malty S Melromarc.
  • Technician vs. Performer: In their duel, Eclair is the "Technician" to Weiss' "Performer". Eclair's style isn't as refined or well-suited for duels, and is more meant for fighting on the battlefield, but she has far better defenses. This means that Weiss not only tires herself out quickly, but also quickly gets herself thrashed by Eclair who uses punches, kicks, shoulder tackles and more. Eclair even criticized her for dancing around so much that she wastes energy and exposes critical weaknesses to her enemy (like her back).
  • Trauma Conga Line:
    • Starting her introduction into the story, she lost her father, Uther, and was locked up in a dungeon to be executed.
    • Later in chapter 38, whatever loyalty and love Eclair had for Mirellia is left on a Broken Pedestal, once Malty reveals the ulterior motives the queen has. While what Malty had said was to manipulate Eclair, it still doesn't change just the type of person Mirellia really is under her queenly façade.
    • She reunites with Lucatiel and is glad to find her alive, but the latter gets killed by the undead Scourge and is revived back as an undead.
    • Discovers that the Seatto heirloom her family had been safeguarding for several generations was never really theirs and that her own honorable duties turned out to be nothing but a lie.
    • In an attempt to surrender the Seatto artifact to the Shield Hero under the belief that she herself is not worthy to hold it, Naofumi attempting to absorb the artifact's powers ends up hurting him in the end. To make matters worse, Eclair is blamed by Firo for hurting Naofumi, despite not knowing the powers within the artifact.
    • The Boletaria Castle that was once a home to her Seatto ancestors is ruined from the battles that took place and the reckless usage of Malty wielding the Seatto artifact's mana.
  • Two Lines, No Waiting: In her omake at chapter 109, she temporarily becomes the main focus and the time period she is in is right after the Three Heroes succeed in defeating Zilla. As Eclair gets close to meeting the Three Heroes with Lord Nash, Graithos, and Steward, she learns of Naofumi and Malty running away from the Three Heroes Church.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: In her puking session, her legs shakes wildly to recover from the long carriage ride and the contents of her stomach being exited out.

  • Happiness in Slavery: Deconstructed. In a variation, Yatsuhashi views himself to be a tool of Naofumi and not a person that can command his own life. Yatsuhashi's reasoning for this thinking is to ensure that he doesn't become a Blood Knight like Zellus.
  • Storming the Castle: Once he knew of Naofumi's imprisonment by the Three Heroes Church from Raki delivering him news, Yatsuhashi was determined to go into the Melromarc kingdom himself to battle every enemy to save Naofumi, until Balgruuf convinced him to instead team up with the Three Heroes for better support.
