Bandits

Highwaymen

Original

    General

  • Abandoned Camp Ruins: They set up camp in chapter 122, but once Mein, Naofumi, and Oersted arrive into their camp, no one is around in the campsite, which leads to the conclusion that Porter's group left their camp to continue their travels elsewhere.
  • Adaptational Backstory Change: The original version of the bandits lacked a backstory, as they only wanted to steal Naofumi and Hickwaal's resources presumably out of their own selfishness. Contrast to the highwaymen here, they are given a backstory as desperate people who ran out of money and resources to provide for themselves, due to the corrupt Schnee Family and authoritarian laws taking away their needs to survive.
  • Adaptational Diversity: The bandits were a comprised of bearded-men that ranged from skinny and muscular in their confrontation with Naofumi. In Ambition of the Red Princess, the highwaymen have Ren, Nora, and Porter to be in the group dynamic of Two Guys and a Girl that stand out from one other, because of their appearance and behavior.
  • Adaptational Heroism: The bandits from The Rising of the Shield Hero existed as a group of bad guys interested on robbing Hickwaal and Naofumi for their resources. By this story here, the highwaymen are given sympathetic motives as the Justified Criminal with the upper society being unfair of their lives. Furthermore, their return in Ambition of the Red Princess to assist Naofumi, Malty, and Oersted have themselves be their navigators to avoid the Three Heroes Church and save everyone in Balafon.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: The bandits were a group of smug criminals that enjoyed teasing Naofumi of exploiting every chance they could get to frame him as a criminals if they were ever to be thrown to the guards. When compared to the RWBY characters in this fanfic, they are reasonable people that can engage in civil talk, despite being thieves intending to rob the main characters and Zylden's resources. Expanded even more, the highwaymen redeem themselves as soon as their issues are resolved, and later on in the story, they make a comeback to shelter Naofumi, Malty, and Oersted from the Three Heroes Church.
  • Adaptational Sympathy: The highwaymen in here are given their sympathetic portrayal in the form of the Justified Criminal forced to rob others to sustain their needs to survive from the corrupt taxes of the law and the Schnee Family's bad working conditions. By comparison to the bandits of The Rising of the Shield Hero, they are a group of bad guys that meet up with Naofumi and Hickwaal to rob them with a smug look to live their lives off of their riches.
  • Affably Evil: Despite being highwaymen intending to steal resources from Zylden and Naofumi's party, they take the time to engage in civil talk of their motives to only want equipment for their survival, until they are all defeated in combat.
  • Ascended Extra: After Naofumi defeats the bandits in The Rising of the Shield Hero and has them sold to the guards, they are never seen again. By Ambition of the Red Princess, the story having the bandits be replaced by desperate RWBY characters needing resources to survive, they are given characterization as flawed people and make a return later in the story to help the main characters as navigators to battle the Three Heroes Church.
  • The Bus Came Back: Since leaving the story in chapter 45, once the group was able to settle down with enough resources provided by Naofumi's party to continue on living. By chapter 123, the group returns back to the main story to give Mein, Naofumi, and Oersted a place to stay inside of Balgruuf's manor from the Three Heroes Church.
  • Justified Criminal: The highwaymen resorted to thievery to rob merchants as a desperate need to sustain their lives from all the corruption that have drained their money and resources of the heavy taxes imbued to their lives.
  • The Navigator: Nora and Ren are appointed by Porter to become the guiders for Mein, Naofumi, Oersted, and Yukari to get by the Whiterun County to reach Balafon in chapter 125.
  • O.C. Stand-in: To give the bandits of The Rising of the Shield Hero more characterization than be just Bit Part Bad Guys for Naofumi's party to defeat and punish, Ambition of the Red Princess replaces the bandits with the heroic and sympathetic portrayal of RWBY characters with a distinctive personality to each member.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: Ren's savvy knowledge are the precautions he takes to avoid the Three Heroes Church, even if it means needing to have his group take a slow and more dangerous route to Scaling the Summit in chapter 125. Nora, on the other hand has an upbeat attitude where she butts heads with her allies to handle past grudges, and is quick to give up to take routes in which she thinks is easier to handle.
  • Strong Girl, Smart Guy: Nora being the strong girl boasts of her strength by wielding a Humongous-Headed Hammer as her means to beat down enemies, all while Ren is cautious in following instructions that are given to him by Porter.
  • Team Member in the Adaptation: Downplayed. The original versions of the bandits all got arrested by guards in The Rising of the Shield Hero, while the highwaymen, that being Nora, and Ren, in Ambition of the Red Princess get a chance to temporarily join the main characters in their journey to reach Balafon.
  • Two Guys and a Girl: The cast of the highwaymen group consists of Ren and Porter being the two guys acting rationally, and Nora acting as their Genki Girl who is a Lady Swears-a-Lot.

Nora

Origin: RWBY

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/beacon_nora.png

  • Adaptational Jerkass: Downplayed. While her original counterpart at RWBY portrayed her as an overly enthusiastic girl, whose antics go too far that it annoys her allies, Ambition of the Red Princess, tones up her cheerfulness with a layer of aggression and the profanity of a Lady Swear A Lot to the things that irritate her.
  • Blowing a Raspberry: To finish off her conversation with Mein after giving up the intention to fight her in chapter 125, Nora blows her tongue off as a last insult.
  • Broken Tears: The procedure to remove a grappling blade in her leg at chapter 127 causes Nora to cry out from the pain, before silencing herself as the pain subsides.
  • Companion Cube: Played for Laughs. Loving her hammer as her life means it, Nora refuses to give it to Ren, if it means the latter risks dropping it down the mountain in chapter 125. Meanwhile, Mein who observes Nora's cherished love for her hammer, Mein is given an image in her head where Nora is obsessively hugging her hammer.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Whether she is irritated or bothered by situations, Nora goes for being sarcastic loudmouth to get people to understand the points in her argument to deal with problems in the way she wants.
  • Genki Girl: Nora is filled with enthusiasm for most of her behavior, where she is confident in her abilities to fight off her enemies with the Humongous-Headed Hammer she wields, but can get soured easily by unfortunate situations leading her life into hardship.
  • Grin of Rage: Comparing the patrols of the Three Heroes Church to be just as bad as the Schnee family, Nora grits her teeth to express her frustration at the thought where she might have to live another life of suffering.
  • Guys Smash, Girls Shoot: Inverted. Nora's main weaponry is a large Warhammer to engage in close combat against enemies, in contrast to Ren having pistols to shoot from afar.
  • Hates Small Talk: From Naofumi talking about concepts of his world that she can't understand in chapter 126, Nora calls out Naofumi for blabbering information the makes no sense, and proposes they all just find the Slender Man and kill it before they are further threatened.
  • Headbutting Heroes: Starting in chapter 125, Nora gets into her first argument with Mein where they almost get into a fight to prove their strength and pride. From then on, Mein holds disdain for Nora, as the latter's whininess to deal with difficulties, and to instead took for possible easier paths to the detriment of others becomes a reminder of Firo's poutiness for Mein.
  • Heroic BSoD: Getting so many knights and soldiers killed in the participation of Naofumi's plan, Bed-Chan lets out a powerful scream indicating of the guilt she feels over herself. To be comforted, Naofumi has a talk with her and apologizes for not considering her innocence in the plan he made, and promises to cause no more deaths in the goal to liberate Balafon.
  • Howl of Sorrow: Right after playing a role in killing House Consevatie and the Three Heroes Church's soldiers in chapter 130, Bed-Chan yells a shrieking noise indicate to her allies of her sorrow of participating in a plan that led to the mass murder of so many people, even if Naofumi's plan was all in the self-defense for Balafon.
  • Humongous-Headed Hammer: Her main weaponry is to utilize a large hammer built for smashing the heads of enemies.
  • Lady Swears-a-Lot: Whether she is particularly frustrated about a loss, or is whiny, Nora is likely to say profanity words to vent out her frustrations to people and be overly dramatic at situations.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Without a plan and tired of the incomprehensive information Naofumi is spouting out in chapter 126, Nora goes out of her way to confront Slender Man on her own, all while Ren is forced to separate himself from the group to ensure Nora's safety.
  • Lodged Blade Removal: After escaping the Three Heroes Church in chapter 127, Nora is laid down on the ground where Ren stabilizes himself to pull out a grappling hook blade stuck inside of her leg. Once successfully removing the blade, Nora is left crying from the pain, and her leg is given healing spells by Naofumi to close up the wound.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Participating in Naofumi's plan to kill lots of soldiers, Bed-Chan screams at everyone to let out all the guilt from feeling like a murderer. From then on, she asks for Naofumi to not involve her in anymore plans related to killing people, as she would much rather incapacitate them as an alternative.
  • Rage Quit: Feeling too tired to continue treading down the dangerous mountain path to avoid the Three Heroes Church in chapter 125, Nora quits walking with the group to whine about other options to take a less dangerous path if they instead fight the Three Heroes Church head-on.
  • Self-Offense: Awakening from her unconsciousness in chapter 127, she spots Bed-Chan as a creepy tree monster that is assumed to be threatening her life, until Naofumi enters to warn Nora of Bed-Chan being their allies to battle off the Three Heroes Church.
  • Sore Loser: Attacked by Mein doubting her abilities to fight in chapter 125 and being reminder of her previous defeat in the first encounter with Naofumi's party, Nora is triggered into wanting to participate in fighting Mein to prove to the latter that her defeat only happened because she just so happened to be starving back then.
  • Super-Scream: As an unintentional side-effect of her Howl of Sorrow, her loud screaming in chapter 130 is enough to make her group tremble to their knees to cover their ears from her noise.
  • Tempting Fate: Questioning Ren on how her whining at the mountain is going to get everyone killed, Nora's complaints get cut off immediately the moment she guesses fate potentially giving her an unstable ground to trip.
Nora: I don't want to walk anymore! Let them come, I say.
Ren: Be reasonable, Nora. We aren't trying to get ourselves killed.
Nora: And what's that going to do? Having me fall doWWW-AH!
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill: Killing most the soldiers guarding Balafon through a mountain slide she caused, Bed-Chan talks with Naofumi to instead resort to non-lethal tactics to take out the remainder of Consevatie's men, since she does not want to feel more guilt murdering people by the masses.
  • Tired of Running: Played for Laughs. Pouting to everyone in chapter 125 that she can't keep climbing down the mountain's dangerous terrain, she suggests for all to stop taking difficult routes from the Three Heroes Church threatening them, and to instead utilize the mountain's environment as guerilla tactics against them.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Invoked. To justify herself being possibly stronger than Mein and only losing to the latter's party in their fight to scavenge for resources, Nora claims her own loss came from lacking the energy the fight, because she had not filled herself with food. Since the defeat, Nora is eager to challenge Mein in a one-on-one fight in chapter 125, despite the time being inappropriate.

New Members

    General

  • Blood Magic: For them to perform the procedure where implanted slave seals are switched, they drip tints of their own blood into the mixture for their spells.
  • Divide and Conquer: Discussed. As explained by Rudopholus, a scheme happened in Faubley in the past where a version of the game of thrones was created to divide families against each other, so that no noble stands a chance in overthrowing the corrupt rulers.
  • Loophole Abuse: To get around the punishments that the slave seals give for people that disobey their owners, Rudopholus and Bellatrix resort to using their magical knowledge to switch the owners of the slave into someone that is a Sympathetic Slave Owner, so that the slaves themselves can attain partial freedom without any worries their new owners won't punish them, until the slave seal is removed.
  • Silver Fox: Downplayed. Despite being in the forties where it is expected for their beauty to slowly fade away, they still appear as attractive people that allure Mein into having her experience a Luminescent Blush.
  • Slave Liberation: Zig Zagged. They are participants ready to assist in the mission to free the people enslaved by the Three Heroes Church in Balafon. However, Bellatrix and Rudopholus plan on performing their Slave Liberation through the use of a Sympathetic Slave Owner, because of not having enough holy water to fully cleanse the slave seal.
  • Smug Smiler: Naofumi taking an interest on learning the history of the Le Strange family with Faubley and the Death Eaters are what push Bellatrix and Rudopholus into smirking with joy on the tales they will be revealing.
  • Sympathetic Slave Owner: Invoked. As an unconventional way to perform a Slave Liberation in Balafon, Rudopholus and Bellatrix strategize on using their Brimir magic to switch the slave seal owners of the Balafon villagers into someone benevolent, so that the villagers are given their partial freedom without anyone punishing them. Until then, once holy water is gathered, the villagers are planned to be eventually freed of their slave seals entirely.
  • Terrorists Without a Cause: Discussed. Bellatrix and Rudopholus being glad that they had served Lord Voldemort well as Death Eaters, an alternative option they refused to take was to work for Subal Melbelrode, which would have led them to participate in wars were there is no clear goal in mind.
Rudopholus: But the alternative would have been a life of servitude under the other dark wizard Subal Melbelrode. And that life would have both of us blinded, and indoctrinated into a war for a false cause.
  • Uncertified Expert: They have the capabilities to tamper and switch slave seals with their magical abilities, but they never actually performed the act on anyone, as there was no test subjects to pull of their theory to switch. When Mein proposes herself as the subject to have her slave seal be connected to Naofumi, Bellatrix and Rudolphus have her be the first person in which they operate to change her slave seal with their magic.
  • Unfortunate Names: Though the name of Death Eaters worked excellently at scaring the blind followers of Dumbledore, it unfortunately sounded edgy and evil looking that could give the implication they are an organization that can't be trusted.

Origin: Harry Potter

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bellatrixlestrange_6.png

  • Cowardice Callout: Describing the fragility of the Three Heroes Church in chapter 123, Bellatrix explains the organization as a bunch of people talking mighty of their power, but can easily get scared off by superstitious rumors.
  • Death Glare: She gives a glare to Rudolphus to give him assurance to backup his arguments that Mein should have her slave seal be switched, instead of cowering before Naofumi's irrational anger in chapter 124.
  • Every Scar Has a Story: Looking onto Mein's scar, Bellatrix interprets it in chapter 123 as a wound telling great stories of battle to cheer up Mein, instead of having the latter wallow in her face looking hideous.
  • Secret Message Wink: She winks near Mein to give her a message of interest and to be The Tease that can get her face to heat up out of embarrassment.
  • The Tease: Near Naofumi and Mein, she acts towards in a flirtatious manner to tease them around, so that she may be able to sexually embarrass and know them better in their interactions:

  • Double Entendre: To reassure Bellatrix in chapter 124 that she is married to him being a smart person, Rudolphus boasts on his ability to know which direction he can wield his wand. Innocently, Rudolphus' line means he is an experienced mage, but it can also be interpreted as someone that is experienced in bedding her.
Rudolphus: You sit tight and rest, my love. I'm not our lord, but you certainly didn't marry an uneducated clown who doesn't know which end of the wand to hold onto.
  • Sudden Name Change: His name when he first debuted started off as Rudolphus in chapter 110, before it was changed into Rudopholus in later chapters where he appears.

Tropes that apply to Yukari

  • Animate Dead: Using her necromancy abilities, she can summon hordes of undead skeletons to fight her battles, all while she stays behind to be kept safe from harm.
  • Apologizes a Lot: Played for Laughs. Getting caught by Bellatrix to be eavesdropping on Rudolphus working on Mein's slave seal in chapter 124, Yukari apologizes for her secret presence as not wanting to interrupt anyone. When Naofumi steps in to reveal she had been noisy in falling down the staircase, Yukari apologizes further for potentially breaking Rudolphus' concentration.
  • Enemy Rising Behind: While she gives an unfortunate answer to everyone of their requirement to travel through the night, Yukari then panics from behind Mein's back, implying that there is a monster that has the possibility of threatening everyone.
  • Friend or Foe?: Encountering Mein, Oersted, and Naofumi in chapter 122, she assumes them to be associates of the Three Heroes Church, because their holy related magic and miracles gives them the impression they are enemies out for her. Thinking the three as a problem, Yukari animates her skeletons to fight them, until surrendering once she deduces Naofumi as the Shield Hero.
  • Humanoid Abomination: Lampshaded. Not knowing who the monster she saw Mein looked like, Yukari describes the creature to be "slender" looking, and it ends up being a Pop-Cultural Osmosis Failure for Naofumi thinking of Slender Man, with the exception of everybody else not knowing who Naofumi is referencing.
  • Horrifying the Horror: Since Yukari's reputation as a necromancer means she is Conditioned to Accept Horror related to undead creatures, a grotesque Humanoid Abomination scaring her in the mountains is a signal for everyone to be afraid of the creature.
  • Internal Reveal: The actions of Rudolphus, Bellatrix, and everything regarding what had happened in Whiterun at chapter 110 all gets its information relayed to Naofumi, Oersted, and Mein by Yukari coming across them in chapter 122.
  • It's Probably Nothing: Spotting a figure behind Mein, Yukari screams in terror thinking there is a monster, but when everyone sees nothing, Yukari assumes she must be imagining threats. Soon enough by the end of chapter 125, Yukari disappears from the group without any explanation, leaving everyone else to worry about the potential monster being Slender Man.
  • It's Quiet… Too Quiet: Naofumi calling out for Yukari to announce her name to everyone in chapter 125 to be cautious that everyone is still together, Yukari's lack of a given response, and Ren noting that his rope is cut signals to everyone that Yukari had gone missing.
  • Luminescent Blush: Her face glows in so much red from apologizing at the fact she may have been interrupting an important procedure on Mein in chapter 124, that Yukari covers her face to hide her own embarrassment.
  • Motor Mouth:
    • Describing her mentors being Rudolphus and Bellatrix to Naofumi, Mein and Oersted in chapter 122, Yukari then goes on a ramble describing how great her mentors are, all while she forgets she is supposed to be engaging context in her conversation.
    • Again in chapter 125, Yukari is left blabbering random monster stories that fill her with enthusiasm to talk about, but the context she provides strays away from Naofumi's original question to learn the possible monsters they could encounter in the mountain.
  • My Significance Sense Is Tingling: Connected to her undead skeletons, Yukari can feel the environment and people that surrounds them, but is blocked out from being able to see through their eyes, or to any other senses the skeletons inhibit.
  • Not Helping Your Case: Witnessing Mein and Oersted use fire magic, Yukari is given the impression that they are members of the Three Heroes Church, which thereby makes them enemies that are threatening her life. However, once Yukari notices Naofumi being the Shield Hero, she calms down from fighting everyone to clear up their confusion.
Yukari: Don't fight, don't fight! OKAY!? We didn't recognize you guys and thought you were spies sent out by the church. All of your holy fires, or miracles didn't help the impression.
  • Pop-Cultural Osmosis Failure: Naofumi calling the unknown monster lurking within the mountains as a figure named, Slender Man, Yukari questions what Naofumi is even talking about in chapter 125.
  • Something We Forgot: As Naofumi makes a role call announcement in chapter 125 to ensure everyone is close together, and no one is lost in their mountain scaling, Yukari is left out as the only one not speaking her name, sending chills to everyone as to where she had gone to.
  • The Scream: Waking up from her consciousness and panicking at the feeling of being eaten alive in chapter 127, Yukari screams loudly in her fears, until Mein comes in to calm her down of the situation being safe.

Tropes that apply to her skeletons

  • Dem Bones: The undead warriors she animates to fight off Naofumi, Oersted, and Mein in a misunderstanding against them is by summoning skeleton hordes.
  • Zerg Rush: The skeleton army Yukari reanimated are clumped up together as her main strategy to engage in a battle against Mein, Oersted, and Naofumi.

Son Goku

Debut: Chapter 84/Chapter 73: Conference of the Legendary Heroes (Mentioned)

Origin: Dragon Ball

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/son_goku_dragon_ball_z.png

  • Adaptational Wimp: In the Dragon Ball series, Goku dying and getting revived multiple times meant that he always got stronger in fighting opponents that were stronger than him, which meant he could eventually face off even Gods of Destruction like Beerus. Here in Ambition of the Red Princess, Goku's first death had him be transported in the world of Medea as its Spear Hero, resulting in Goku never learning the same techniques and growing the same strength as his original counterpart once did.
  • All-Loving Hero: To Melromarc, he was known as one of the greatest legendary heroes to be ever summoned and is near universally loved by everyone. Just as he was merciful in giving people chances, Goku was exceptionally powerful in defeating his enemies. To further cement himself in history as one of the greatest, he preferred taking on a single wife than a harem.
  • Death by Adaptation: Zig Zagged. From the Dragon Ball series, Goku is killed in various different ways, but Death Is Cheap in the series, since he is usually revived back to life. In this story, the first death Goku experiences actually sticks and it results in him being reincarnated into Medea as its Spear Hero.
  • Kamehame Hadoken: His Kamehameha attack was the strongest attack he could unleash upon his enemies. To the Claes family, it became a signature attack where members dedicate themselves into learning how it works.
  • Mythology Gag: Besides his Kamehameha being his signature attack from Dragon Ball, his "rock, paper, and scissors" technique is a reference to an attack combo he used against Yamcha before learning the Kamehameha Wave.
  • The Redeemer: Due to his mercy, Goku had redeemed many of his enemies and they went on to become his greatest allies, all from wanting to give everyone a chance.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Goku was one of the most faithful summoned heroes in Melromarc for his preference to have one person as his wife, instead of having a harem of nobles following him around. His matrimonial fidelity eventually led to him being immortalized as a popular romantic character in various In-Universe fictional novels.
  • When All You Have Is a Hammer…: Defied. Not wanting to always rely on his Kamehameha to perform long ranged attacks, Goku improved his "rock, paper, and scissors" technique for more styles to combat his enemies.

Others

    Lautrec (Spoilers)

Lautrec

Debut: Chapter 10/Chapter 9: Fighting for Freedom

Origin: Dark Souls | The Rising of the Shield Hero

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lautrec.jpg

Lautrec is one of the slaves Naofumi buys from Beloukas. Though at first, Lautrec is a supporting party member for Naofumi, the former immediately ditches him once his slave crest is removed in the aftermath of Naofumi and Motoyasu's sacred duel. Afterwards, Lautrec becomes largely absent from the story in preparation to return for the third wave to summon his goddess, Web!Raphtalia.

  • Adaptational Species Change: Lautrec was a human wearing a brightly colored golden armor in his original series, Dark Souls. Ambition of the Red Princess brings Lautrec in the form of a lizardman slave to act as the latter's O.C. Stand-in to temporarily be in Naofumi's party and to ally himself with Web!Raphtalia.
  • Ascended Extra: As the lizardman slave from The Rising of the Shield Hero's web novel, he is only mentioned as a few lines to describe his appearance. The fanfic turns the lizardman slave into an O.C. Stand-in by giving him the personality of Lautrec's love for a goddess.
  • The Bus Came Back: Since chapter 26 where he fled away from Naofumi's group and everyone in Melromarc, Lautrec has barely been mentioned in many points of the story, until chapter 93 where he summons the Lady of the Sword at the third wave.
  • Composite Character: He is the lizardman slave briefly seen in the web novel of The Rising of the Shield Hero, and he receives his characterization along with the personality coming from Lautrec.
  • The Fundamentalist: Lots of Lautrec's dialog and beliefs have him talk madly about a type of goddess he will always shower praise and worship to cleanse the dirt in Medea. Though there are religions in relation to the Four Legendary Heroes, Lautrec's beliefs are aligned only to his goddess he frequently rambles about.
  • Gaining the Will to Kill: Invoked. His training for Raphtalia in chapter 14 is dedicated to having her kill a Rabbit Pill to give her the killing intent and preparation for the monsters that will arrive in the second wave.
  • Gold-Colored Superiority: His return in chapter 93 has Lautrec be wearing an armor so brightly covered in gold that it shine's Mein's eyes from seeing all of his equipment. As a result of the gold, Lautrec stands out from the rest of the soldiers fighting waves for its incredibly bright appearance in his charge to reach the frontlines.
  • Harmful to Minors: In chapter 14, Lautrec has Raphtalia be put into a situation to kill a rabbit pill to prepare her for the bloodshed of the second wave. While the training in Gaining the Will to Kill will be useful for Raphtalia's fighting, it will damage her innocence and mentality.
  • Karma Houdini:
    • He is never punished for the harsh training he put Raphtalia through in the initial chapters where Lautrec stayed as Naofumi's slave. Once Lautrec is freed of his slave seal, he makes his opportunity to run away and is never seen again until chapter 93.
    • Lautrec's return in chapter 93 has him succeed in summoning his goddess, Web!Raphtalia, into the world of Medea to have his goddess punish the people she presumes to be evil. When the goddess is defeated in chapter 95, Lautrec flees the battlefield of the third wave and snuck away the knights that tried to capture him.
  • Large Ham: Whenever he is going to ramble on his praises for his goddess, Lautrec is likely to go over-the-top and be dramatic at the goddess' glory.
  • More Despicable Minion:
    • Inverted. To Naofumi Iwatani, the latter is a hero chosen by the Shield to save Medea from the Waves of Catastrophy, In his goal to save Medea, he is highly reluctant to try out morally grey solutions and is a Small Steps Hero to have everyone be saved. Lautrec on the other hand is one of his slave party members who bears no loyalty towards him and is the Token Evil Teammate among the rest of the party. Lautrec is prepared to have Raphtalia be exposed to blood without Naofumi's consent and is seen as an insane lizardman that constantly boasts of his goddess.
    • Downplayed. At Web!Raphtalia, Lautrec is slightly more despicable than her because of his behavior as The Fundamentalist. While Web!Raphtalia can be seen as evil for going a rampage to people she assumes are villains like the ones originating from her world, she at least had good intentions from the back of her mind. Lautrec meanwhile only cares about serving her and doesn't mind on murdering anyone in Medea.
  • Mythology Gag: His return back in chapter 94 reintroduces him inside of a golden armor, alluding to his original appearance from Dark Souls.
  • Named In The Adaptation: He was only referred to as the lizardman slave in The Rising of the Shield Hero, as he lacked any characterization. In the fanfic, the lizardman slave is named as Lautrec, as so he could gain a characterization similar that of the Lautrec from Dark Souls.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: Lautrec appears to be nothing more than a mad lizard that loves to spout words of worship of his goddess. Even after he escapes Naofumi's party, Mein has the reassurance to Naofumi that if Lautrec were a problem, then the villages would have already exposed his existence. When he finally makes a return in chapter 93, Lautrec begins to truly be a major problem by summoning the goddess her worships and gains her support in taking down masses of soldiers that have prepared themselves in fighting the third wave.
  • O.C. Stand-in: Lautrec lacked any characterization in The Rising of the Shield Hero, as his role was to play as a background slave character for Naofumi to make a small remark on. Ambition of the Red Princess has Naofumi buy Lautrec to expand his characterization, and the latter is given the personality of his Dark Souls counterpart.
  • Overzealous Underling:
    • He is a slave member of Naofumi's party to assist him in fighting off the waves, but Lautrec's interactions to guide Raphtalia prove him to be a highly unstable supporter. To help Raphtalia grow stronger and ready for the waves, Lautrec forces her to kill a rabbit pill, without consenting Naofumi, believing that harsh actions are necessary to train a child for battle.
    • In being an underling worshipper of Web!Raphtalia, Lautrec is eager to follow the orders of his goddess and has gone off to endanger the lives of his former party members to fulfill his goddess' wish to have Ambition!Malty be killed.
  • Psycho Supporter: In both his role for Naofumi and Web!Raphtalia, Lautrec's beliefs make him a highly deranged lizard that frequently loves to spout out how great his goddess is.
  • Sadist: He expresses his pleasure to assist his goddess, Web!Raphtalia, in killing Ambition!Malty.
  • Team Member in the Adaptation: Subverted. The original lizardman slave remained under the control of Beloukas in the slave trade in the web novel of The Rising of the Shield Hero. Here, Lautrec is bought and becomes a team member of Naofumi's party, but then bolted out of the party as soon as he was free.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Being one of Naofumi's original slaves and party members, Lautrec is seen by many others as the worst member for his strong obsession to worshipping his goddess. While Naofumi's party are loyal to him in a sort of way like Mein being a member out of self-interest, until growing to love Naofumi, Firo, who despite being a brat is loyal to Naofumi, Lautrec was the only one to immediately ditch the party in his moment of opportunity.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: As soon as the goddess he summoned is defeated by Cardin Winchester, Lautrec escapes all the knights that are present in chapter 95 and is never held accountable for the damage caused.

    Lady of the Sword (Spoilers)

Raphtalia (Web Novel)

Debut: Chapter 63/Chapter 54: Bitch Lord, I am (Mentioned)

Origin: The Rising of the Shield Hero

A version of Raphtalia originating from the web novel version of The Rising of the Shield Hero. In the aftermath of the web novel's events, Raphtalia alongside with Naofumi have attained godlike abilities from the death of Medea Pideth Machina. This Raphtalia is brought into the world of Medea via Lautrec summoning her. Once arriving into Medea, Raphtalia begins a rampage to kill those she assumes to be the same evil people that originally came from her world.
  • Apologetic Attacker: Whenever she is about to deliver fatal attacks onto Mein, Web!Raphtalia's tone of voice is that of remorse, yet despite what sadness of what Raphtalia might feel, she believes in the end that Mein is Beyond Redemption and deserves death.
  • An Arm and a Leg: The goddess has one of her arm be broken by Pope Balmus using the last of his strength to weaken her before his death.
  • Blaming the Victim: Despite having slaughtered and injured several soldiers in chapter 94, Raphtalia is quick to lay the blame on Ambition!Malty for everything that had happened, out of the belief that the latter is equally selfish as her web novel counterpart and deserves to die.
  • The Blank: Web!Raphtalia's godly powers give her a Mysterious Veil that covers her face and beneath the veil, no one is able to clearly see any facial features on Web!Raphtalia's face.
  • Call a Human a "Meatbag": If she is referring to Ambition!Malty, Raphtalia is sure to always call her "Witch", since Web!Malty's name was changed to "Witch", and Raphtalia is under the assumption that Ambition!Malty is equally evil as her web novel counterpart.
  • Fearless Fool: Discussed. Outnumbered by an entire army of soldiers, Mein wishes to believe that the goddess is actually just being foolish in taking on a large number of people and not a One-Woman Army capable of handling everyone on her own.
  • Mad God: She has powers that outclass everyone fighting the third wave in everyway, and Raphtalia's instability comes from being unable to differentiate that the individuals she assumes to be evil in Medea are not the same people of her own world.
  • Minor Major Character: From her home series, The Rising of the Shield Hero, Raphtalia was one of the main protagonists that aided Naofumi in defending her world from the goddess, Medea Pideth Machina. After the death of the goddess, Raphtalia and Naofumi went on to defend several worlds from their perspective. Though an important deity of the original story, Web!Raphtalia's only presence in Ambition of the Red Princess was to appear in one chapter and cause a rampage among the fighters. Once done, Raphtalia is quickly defeated by Cardin and is never seen again, though her actions have long lasting consequences.
  • Mistaken Identity: Seeing Ambition!Malty among the many people participating to battle the third wave, Raphtalia assumes her to the same vile person like her web novel counterpart, and ignores the possible redeeming qualities Ambition!Malty has and how she has left a positive influence on her party.
  • Mysterious Veil: A veil of magic exists outside of her face and the face of her own body doesn't appear to have any facial features on it.
  • Not So Invincible After All: Web!Raphtalia gets her arm broken as a last act of defiance from Pope Balmus before the latter's death. By having her arm be broken, it signals the Legendary Heroes and the remaining fighters still alive in the third wave that Web!Raphtalia can be beaten with enough effort.
  • Obliviously Evil: She believes her actions to kill specific individuals in Medea that resemble the same people once hated deserves to die. However, the people Raphtalia is attempting to kill in Medea are innocent of the crimes she assumes they made or whatever crimes they made are much more downplayed. As a result of her actions, Raphtalia is reviled as a monster for hurting the people that are seen as heroes.
  • One-Woman Army: Her arrival as the last threat of the third wave has her be the most formidable foe the soldiers are forced to prepare for in the unexpected appearance of Lautrec summoning her. Web!Raphtalia's strength as a goddess gives her the power to face off an army of soldiers, take on Pope Balmus, and dispatch the Legendary Heroes on her own.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: She can set off shockwaves from hitting her hammer at her targets and the skills she has is so high above everyone else battling the third wave, that none of the best knights or Legendary Heroes have been able effectively hurt her. On top of having godlike powers, Web!Raphtalia has brought down several important figures and knights of Melromarc.
  • Sickening "Crunch!": A crunch of a broken bone is made by Pope Balmus breaking one of her arms in a final attack to injure her.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Her only major appearance is in chapter 94, and the time she spends within the chapter is to massacre those she perceives as the same repulsive individuals that came from her world. not acknowledging them as different people. When Raphtalia is stopped and sent back to her world in chapter 95 and is never seen again, the impact she left had given rise to Confessor Oliver Cromwell and Siegmar Isaac Octavius Consevatie to turn the Three Heroes Church into becoming a dangerous threat.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Raphtalia doesn't know any proper battle stances to maximize her powers and is seen as looking clumsy as to how she positions herself in battle. Despite Raphtalia's lack of fighting stance, she makes up for it by having godlike powers that make her an Invincible Villain to her foes in the third wave.
  • Van Helsing Hate Crimes: Regardless of how good of a person Ambition!Malty presents herself to everyone and is slowing changing to become better, Raphtalia sees her as equally like the Web Novel!Malty who is nothing more than a one-note Hate Sink designed by Medea Pideth Machina to ruin several worlds.
  • The Victim Must Be Confused: Once she hears Ambition!Raphtalia call Mein as a mother and berate her for attempting to murder her in chapter 94, Web Novel!Raphtalia mistakes Ambition!Raphtalia's wording as her being a victim of Ambition!Malty manipulating everyone into thinking she is a good girl.
  • Walking Spoiler: Just from her name alone can alert viewers of her coming from the web novel story of The Rising of the Shield Hero, and her entrance into Ambition of the Red Princess has Raphtalia endanger or even kill the lives of several major characters.
  • Worf Effect: To demonstrate the scale of how far she outclasses the warriors fighting the waves, Raphtalia has managed to stab Pope Balmus who is known for being a great physical combatant, and can hurt Zellus and Lotheringan - two knights who have given the Legendary Heroes a struggle in training.
  • Wrecked Weapon: Subverted. She manages to seemingly destroy Naofumi's shield just by touching it, something that's never never happened in Medea. In actuality, Web!Raphtalia stole Naofumi's shield and uses it as her arsenal of defense.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Once she is summoned to Medea, Raphtalia believes herself to be a heroic figure plunging the world of its evil by killing or making attempts in doing it to the same people who look like the ones who have caused problems in her original world. Those main people Raphtalia wishes dead are Malty and Pope Balmus, seeing those people as the same vile monster from her own world, but Raphtalia fails to realize they are a completely different set of individuals.

    Chief God

Naofumi Iwatani (Web Novel)

Origin: The Rising of the Shield Hero

    Undead Scourge

Undead Scourge

Debut: Chapter 67/Chapter 56: A Song of Hate and Prejudice

Origin: Original Character

  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Anyone who is revived by the undead scourge lacks a soul inside their body, causing them to have a distorted or lack of understanding towards what is right or wrong.
  • Came Back Wrong: As an undead, they act initially fine from the effects of the Scourge, but the longer they stay mobile, more of their mind is slowly lost into insanity, until becoming nothing more than mindless beasts.
  • Empty Shell: Getting revived by the undead scourge can have the person be at first, capable of acting normal in societal standards, but in the end, they lack a soul and will eventually be driven into insanity.
  • Sanity Slippage: The sanest person that is immediately revived by the Scourge will eventually lose their sanity to become a mindless spawn.

    Thunder Lizard/Godzilla/Zilla

Thunder Lizard/Godzilla/Zilla

Debut: Chapter 61/Chapter 51: Saving Shield Hero

Origin: Godzilla

  • Came Back Strong: The revival of the Thunder Lizard as a zombie gave it the ability of Necromancy, meaning that the surrounding corpses it comes across can be revived to amass itself an undead army.
  • Dying as Yourself: Zilla looks to be causing destruction with no clear goal in mind as an undead Thunder Lizard, but by the time of her death in chapter 98, Zilla gets a conversation with Gaelion where she is able to express her last words to him.
  • Hive Mind: The undead Thunder Lizard operates on its undead victims following her consciousness to battle out any living beings that are out to get near her.
  • I'm Melting!: Her death in chapter 98 is by melting away into a puddle of black goo from receiving Motoyasu's [Twin Dragon Strike] attack.
  • It Can Think: Zilla spends most of her time from debut and as an undead Thunder Lizard rampaging through villages with nothing clear to imply of her sapience. By the time Zilla's undead body is rotting away and Gaelion arrives to berate her for what she has become, Zilla shows her true self as a desperate mother wanting to protect her last child.
  • Monster Is a Mommy: Zilla's gender remains unknown and acts as a rampaging monster that appears to have no agency. During her final moments as she slowly rots away into a puddle of goo, Zilla lets out her womanly voice that alerts the Three Legendary Heroes of her gender and role as a mother.
  • Necromancy: Described by a soldier reporting to the Three Legendary Heroes of the Thunder Lizard's return, the creature's revival had given it the ability to revive other dead corpses, including fallen soldiers.
  • Notzilla: The Thunder Lizard shares several characteristics of the Godzilla concept that Naofumi is quick to associate with. The creature itself has lightning powers and looks to be a giant creature that exists to cause mass destruction as a Generic Doomsday Villain.

    Cultists

Cultists

Debut: Chapter 102/Chapter 87: Ash to Ash

Origin: Original Character

  • Reduced to Dust: Inverted. The Cultists are in the shape of humanoid creatures that function with their bodies being made out of dust.

    Bed-Chan/Bed of Chaos

Bed-Chan/Bed of Chaos

Debut: Chapter 125/Chapter 107: Slender the Mountain Top (Mentioned), Chapter 126/Chapter 108: Bed of Chaos

Origin: Dark Souls

Born from the God Crafting ritual made by Consevatie, her father, Bed-Chan hides from the rest of the Three Heroes Church, believing that organization to be for turning her into a pet to be exploited. To Naofumi and Mein's group, Bed-Chan assumes them to be enemies to be hostile of, until communicating with Naofumi to clear up all their misunderstandings.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: Her versatile allow her to stretch out her roots around environments to sense nearby lifeforms to detect, but it has a flaw of being an obvious pin-pointer that she is present to any potential intruders.
  • Benevolent Monsters: At first with her scary appearance, Bed-Chan can give off the impression as a Humanoid Abomination of a plant threatening to harm hikers near her way. Though terrifying to meet at first glance, being able to communicate and understand Bed-Chan's motives will only show her to be a passive monster seeking to live her life peacefully in the mountains, but is threatened by the presence of the Three Heroes Church.
  • Born as an Adult: By the time of her birth, Bed-Chan has the capabilities of speaking understandable speeches of words to communicate with Naofumi and sense people that have a chance of threatening her life.
  • Brainwashed: Subverted. Based on Mein using Naofumi's interpretation of Slender Man's brainwashing of captured victims, Mein assumes Bed-Chan to be capable of doing the same feats of brainwashing onto Oersted, Yukari, Nora, and Ren, until Naofumi clears up the situation as Bed-Chan only capturing people out of the fear from being threatened.
  • Carbon Skin: To have a defense against the attackers of the Three Heroes Church, Bed-Chan hardens her bark to bounce back the weapons being thrown at her body in chapter 127.
  • Doomy Dooms of Doom: Right after Bed as her first name, Bed-Chan's surname is to be given the title, "Chaos", but nothing indicates her to be a destructive force to be afraid of.
  • Everything Sensor: Bed-Chan can spread her roots down onto the ground to widen her perspective at any lifeforms being close to her vicinity.
  • Female Monster Surprise: Bed-Chan is thought to be a gender-neutral humanoid abomination that is a tree, until Naofumi clears up to Mein that Bed-Chad identifies herself as a girl, and the latter's way of talking sounds feminine to him.
  • Fluffy the Terrible: For a plant monster, she was named by her father as the Bed of Chaos to be something that is dramatically dangerous to be based off of a bed.
  • If I Wanted You Dead...: Discussed and Played for Laughs. Bed-Chan being suspected by Mein that the fruits produced for Naofumi in chapter 127 contains poison, Naofumi denies the case as a possibility, since Bed-Chan could have easily killed him during their single encounter from before the Three Heroes Church.
  • Ironic Name: Her Bed name given the Doomy Dooms of Doom as chaos, is actually a passive monster that hides within the mountains in fear of her safety against the Three Heroes Church, and won't be a threat to anyone unless feeling threatened.
  • It Can Think: To Mein's interpretation, Bed-Chan is thought to be a mindless monster out to capture and kill all of her companions navigating them in the mountains. Naofumi, on the other hand, is able to use his Legendary Shield's translator to confirm Bed-Chan to be a living being capable of speech and is requesting for help to escape the Three Heroes Church.
  • "It" Is Dehumanizing: Mein, learning that Bed-Chan is sentient, she calls the tree monster as "It", until Naofumi replies to Mein that Bed-Chan is a living being that can think for herself, and is actually categorized as female]].
  • Luminescent Blush: Implied. Based on Mein's humorous Armor-Piercing Question if the fruits she produces have an accidental chance of being poisonous, Bed-Chad slowly retreats back from Naofumi, implying she was embarrassed of herself being possibly incompetent at crafting lethal food.
  • Minor Insult Meltdown: Getting called "it" or a "slender thing" by Mein, Bed-Chan has Naofumi be her Translator Buddy to express her emotions of hurt from Mein being unable to consider her as a living being that is not hostile.
  • Non-Indicative Name: Bed-Chan is a tree that was given sentience because Consevatie performed a god crafting ritual that brought her to life. Yet for all the give names he could have given the tree, Consevatie chose to call her the Bed of Chaos, which does nothing to show a connection of a tree monster and a bed.
  • Plant Person: Invoked. The creatures formed from her seeds become humanoid plants to serve either as fighters to battle on the Three Heroes Church in Balafon, or assist the remaining villagers in fleeing from any danger caused by fighting.
  • Stone Wall: For her durable bark, she serves as the wall that defends Naofumi, Mein, and all their travelling companions from many incoming attacks of the Three Heroes Church in chapter 127.
  • Summoning Artifact: She creates seeds for Naofumi and Mein to keep, as so they are provided with an option to plant them into the ground and grow Plant People as extra support for their mission to liberate Balafon in chapter 130.
  • Translator Buddy: Since Bed-Chan's language sounds exactly like Japanese to Naofumi being able to translate her words with his Legendary Hero abilities, Mein has to rely on him to relay what information he can learn about Bed-Chan's existence, because Mein herself lacks the same capability to translate another language.
  • Turned Against Their Masters: She was created by Consevatie to produce fruit for him and to be his exotic pet, yet because of the Three Heroes Church's poor treatment of her, Bed-Chan sides with Naofumi to escape from all associates of the Three Heroes Church to live a peaceful life.
  • Vine Tentacles: She uses the tree branches that extend out of her main body to entrap people and leave them be dangling in the air.

Third Wave Enemies

    Void Dragon Leviathan

Void Dragon Leviathan

Debut: Chapter 91/Chapter 79: Order Tide

Origin: Original Character

A dragon monster that spends most of its time being a Super-Persistent Predator to swallow Mein and Naofumi as part of its meal.
  • Defeat Equals Explosion: The Void Dragon meets its end by getting hit by a beam of energy that penetrates its body. Once the leviathan has its body penetrated, it violently explodes into a ball of fire.
  • Eye Scream: Bovis and Draco smash their heavy weapons onto the dragon's skull in chapter 93, and the impact was so strong that the dragon's eyes had burst.
  • It Can Think: Downplayed. What sets apart the Void Leviathan from the other third wave monsters is that the Leviathan is the only one to have the sentience to have a preference at going after Naofumi and Mein as a source of dinner.
  • More Teeth than the Osmond Family: When Mein and Naofumi are about to fall inside its mouth, the Leviathan is described as having so much teeth that it is all Mein could see. On top of having so many teeth, their sizes are even bigger than the one that Mein has on her face.
  • Super-Persistent Predator: Once Mein and Naofumi succeed in escaping its grasp, the Void Dragon becomes persistent in only wanting to chase after them as a meal, instead of just leaving them to face off the rescuers coming for Naofumi and Mein.

    Soul Eater Fish

Soul Eater

Debut: Chapter 93/Chapter 81: Soul Storm

Origin: The Rising of the Shield Hero

The main boss of the third wave that looks to be a giant fish that flails around the battlefield of Medea.
  • Anti-Climax: Being the true boss monster of the third wave, many of the soldiers and Legendary Heroes who are fighting it are left confused as to why it looks pathetic at looking like a monster, when compared to the previous monsters that the third wave had sent. The Soul Eater looking like a fish gains some sympathy for a few of the fighters, due to looking surprisingly normal for a boss monster and for flopping around like what a typical fish would do on land.
  • Anti-Magic: Its Vacuum Mouth is effective at defending itself from any magical attacks coming to harm it.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: The Soul Eater is described by many others as a typical fish you'd see in fishing nets, except that the Soul Eater is enlarged to a huge size.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: The Soul Eater is suppose to be the main threat that is causing the waves, and while it does pose a threat for sucking up magic with its Vacuum Mouth, the beast is quickly defeated by Confessor Cromwell blasting it with a strong beam of light once it's forced into a stationary position.
  • Vacuum Mouth: Any magic thrown at the Soul Eater are negated by having the magic be sucked into its mouth to minimize any damage effect.
